Baggy Day: Giants' players talk about past, look to future

The Star-Ledger-USA TODAY Sports

New York Giants' players cleared out their lockers Monday and headed into an off-season that is starting much sooner than anticipated.

New York Giants' players cleared out their lockers at the Timex Performance Center on Monday, a sad tradition known as 'Baggy Day.' Here is some of what the players were talking about on their way out the door.

Antrel Rolle on the state of the roster:

"I think we have a whole lot to build on. I understand what this team is about. We understand the type of players that we have here in this locker room and we just didn't get things done the way we should have. We'll be fine. I have all the confidence in the world in this organization and this team and in the coaching staff. We'll bounce back. It just won't be this year."

Chase Blackburn, a free agent, on whether he will be back next season:

I would love to be back. I've had conversations with the coaches and I just talked to Jerry Reese and hopefully we can get things figured out and get back here. I'd love to. Hopefully they want me back and we'll figure it out when the time comes. ... They're reviewing everybody at the same time, so there's a lot to go into this. I don't make those decisions.

NOTE: Let's not turn the entire 'comments' section into a Blackburn referendum. We have plenty of time for that, and we will provide you with plenty of opportunities.

Eli Manning on why the Giants imploded in games vs. Atlanta and Baltimore before defeating Philadelphia:

"I don't have an answer. We talked about it. I think that's what's on everyone's mind, is "why?" Not that we lost in Baltimore, lost in Atlanta, just how we lost and that we didn't give ourselves a chance. I don't think there's an answer right there. I think it's just a matter of we didn't have our A-game. In those crucial situations, you've got to have it. You've got to be at your best, and you've got to want it, and we didn't have it."

Justin Tuck on what went wrong this season:

"The one thing I agreed with (Coach Coughlin) was yesterday we played like a world champion quality football team. Why we couldn't do that consistently this year will be the big question on all of our minds and hopefully we can find some answers to why. But you kind of feel like you got punched in the stomach a little bit just because we know that we have a high quality football team that could make a lot of noise in the playoffs if that would have happened, but it didn't and you move on. You go get some rest and some people are going to engulf themselves in football. I won't be one of them. I'll be doing something different to get my mind off of it. The goal around here is never going to change. We believe that we're going to have an opportunity to play for a world championship every year and when that doesn't happen, it's a failed season. So regardless if we make the playoffs or don't make the playoffs, any year that we're not holding up that Lombardi is a failed season."

Martellus Bennett, a free agent, on his desire to return to the Giants:

"Of course I would want to come back. I think this place has been great. I love the organization, the people, the team, the city and the fans. I love everything about here. You always want to be at a place where you love everything. There are only so many places you can go where you love everything about it."
