Black Monday is in full swing around the NFL with coaches and general managers being fired left and right. Chan Gailey (Buffalo), Lovie Smith (Chicago), Andy Reid (Philadelphia) and Romeo Crennel (Kansas City) are among the coaches canned thus far. The New York Jets have ousted GM Mike Tannenbaum, but chosen to keep coach Rex Ryan.
How does all of this impact the New York Giants? Well, despite what many fans think of him defensive coordinator Perry Fewell could emerge as a hot head-coaching candidate. Director of College Scouting Marc Ross will be in line for GM vacancies. Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride never seems to draw much interest as a head coach, but you never know.
Let's take a look at the possibilities for all three.
Marc Ross
[UPDATE: The Jets have asked for permission to speak to Ross about their vacant GM job.]
Ross has been the Giants Director of College Scouting -- general manager Jerry Reese's right-hand man -- for five seasons. Before that he was a college scout for the Buffalo Bills for three seasons.
Ross is considered the favorite for the Carolina Panthers' vacant general manager job, where former Giants' general manager Ernie Accorsi is playing a key role in conducting the search for a new GM.
The Giants have won two Super Bowls while Ross has been around, and you have to believe that if the Panthers don't hire him someone else will.
Perry Fewell
If Ross ends up in Carolina you have to believe that Fewell would be high on the list of potential new head coaches for the Panthers. We have already talked about the possibility that he could be on the list of candidates in Buffalo, where he served as defensive coordinator and interim head coach before coming to the Giants.
Best guess is that Fewell will have some options, despite the Giants finishing 31st in the league this season on defense and missing the playoffs.
Kevin Gilbride
The Giants' offensive coordinator seems to get no respect despite several seasons of success and calling the plays for a pair of Super Bowl winners. He failed in his only stint as a head coach, going 6-16 with the San Diego Chargers in 1997 and 1998.
At 61 and not having been a head coach in so long teams might bypass him again. Still, with the success the Giants have enjoyed while he has been calling the plays you have to think there are teams that will at least want to talk to him.
