Lawrence Tynes named Special Teams Player of the Month

Ronald Martinez

Lawrence Tynes today was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Month for October. Tynes was honored one day after safety Stevie Brown was selected as the NFC Defensive Player of the Week, the fourth Giants player to receive a POW award this season.

In four October games - all Giants victories - Tynes made 13-of-14 field-goal attempts and all 12 of his extra point tries. His only unsuccessful field goal attempt was blocked. He also had nine touchbacks on kickoffs in the four games.

Tynes, a nine-year veteran and sixth-year Giant, capped his month Sunday in Dallas by tying his career high with five field goals in a 29-24 victory over the Cowboys. He kicked field goals of 41, 37, 26, 43 and 37 yards. It was the second time this season Tynes kicked five field goals in a game; he also accomplished the feat on Sept. 20 at Carolina.

In the other October games, Tynes kicked two field goals and five extra points in a victory over Cleveland, four field goals and two extra points at San Francisco (where he had a field goal attempt blocked) and two field goals and three extra points vs. Washington.

Tynes is in the midst of the finest season of his career. He leads the NFL with 26 field goal attempts, 24 field goals and 94 points, 14 more than runner-up Steve Gostkowski of New England. Tynes is on pace to shatter the single-season franchise records for field goals (35, accomplished three times, most recently by John Carney in 2008) and points (148 by Jay Feely in 2005). He has made 92.3 percent of his field goal attempts, which would be another record if he maintains that pace.

Tynes' 24 field goals are five more than he had in the entire 2010 and 2011 seasons.
