Pereira's Take On Sunday's Officiating
I will have your 'Kudos & Wet Willies' in a little while. In the meantime, I figured you guys might be interested in FOX analyst Mike Periera's take on some of the weirder calls from Sunday's game.
Pereira figures the Giants should have been given a first down on the pass to Hakeem Nicks in the second quarter. None of it wound up making any difference, but Pereira's views are always interesting.

Not off target at all

Totally wrong on the PI call
Nicks was being mugged all the way. If that did not interfere, what is interference? Do you have to hit the WR with a zamboni?
Ludicrous. Glad it had no impact.
All the Giants should play like Mark Bavaro.
TC, TQ, PF, KG, DD and KMac Must Go!
It is equally worthless when people are always optimistic or always pessimistic. Either way I take their opinion with a pound of salt because I know they only have one setting. I post my own thoughts, not what either side wants to read.
Funny.
The camera was focused on Eli but the pass interference was so blatant you could see it before Eli decided to throw the to Nicks. Dude was practically humping Nicks.

thats y E threw it there
he was trying to get the penalty
Talk is Cheap! Play the Game!
You can't spell Elite without ELI.
I'm blue thru and thru but I've got to disagree
Arm around the waist and reaching in with the left hand is good technique. Eli was out of the pocket, a threat to run, illegal contact rules are voided, and Nicks is like a center in the low box waiting for the point guard to get him the ball. Owens has to be allowed to play some defense.
My biggest reason for agreeing with the non-call is that I want our dbs to get the same benefit when they make contact that does not significantly hinder the receiver. Let ’em play.
Bottom line – Nicks had two hands out in front of him and had opportunity to catch that ball.

Except that you're not supposed to be allowed to put your arm around the waist.
You just illustrated why it WAS PI.

After a big win, we can have civil debates
I should have said “right hand on hip, right arm around the back of the waist” .
Don’t think he was wrapped around the front. IMO, Nicks could have had two hands on that one, I’d let the call go and expect the same ruling for our DB’s.
The NFL is 180 degrees from the LB and DB muggings of the 1970’s. It was all defense: Purple People Eaters, Fearsome Foursome, Doomsday, Orange Crush, No Name D, Steel Curtain, etc. Today it is all offense, 5000 yard years, 35-50 TD passes the norm.
Rule changes are blowin’ in the wind. Things will slowly go back to a happy medium. In the meantime, can a DB even breathe on a wideout anymore?
"Allie Sherman wrecked the Giants!" - my 5th grade bus driver
Voided contact?
Does this only apply when the QB is flushed out of the pocket? What about designed plays that rolls the QB out? Personally, however the QB get’s out of the pocket and he’s behind the LOS, the rule should remain consistent. The worst that could happen may be an illegal man downfield!
I don't agree on that
What is the defender supposed to do there? Just give him the TD?
I thought that was good defense. Nicks boxed him out, and the guy tried, and did make a good play without bowling him over…..
Defenders have to be allowed to try and make a play.
he had his arms wrapped around him.
It was a holding at the very least.

a DB
Is allowed to reach in to defend the ball as long as there’s no contact. The gotta let them play. It was a good non call

Just like receivers are programmed to make the "throw the flag" motion every time a pass is defended well!

saw that too.
He mauled Nicks then immediately looked at the ref, who had his thumb up his ass apparently.

only thing that possibly makes it not PI
is that Nicks was using his arse to shield off the defender and boxing him out. I’ve seen less be called PI on the defense tho, so that’s crap.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
If it was Boothe's butt
The DB would’ve been in an gravitational orbit where PI would be inevitable!
His "chain of events" following the delay of game/12 men call on ATL is flawed
and beautifully illustrates the problem with the “what-if”scenarios:
Instead of the Falcons having a third-and-10 situation from the Giants’ 30-yard line, the penalty turned it into a third-and 15-from the 35.
Ryan then completed a 14-yard pass to Roddy White, which would have been a first down had the penalty yardage not been assessed. Rather, it was a fourth-and-1, Ryan was stuffed on a quarterback sneak and the Giants took over.
The Giants would not be back in coverage allowing a 14-yard gain, nor would ATL be making that same call, on 3rd and 10. You cannot say “we woulda shoulda coulda” based on previous circumstance. We don’t know if Atlanta makes a first on 3rd and 10.
"Allie Sherman wrecked the Giants!" - my 5th grade bus driver
I took issue with that as well.
I actually agree with him on the pass interference call on Nicks – it could have gone either way, but it wasn’t blatant.
But for a guy who poses to know so much about the game of football, he should know better than to play the “what-if” game. It just doesn’t work that way.
You know what's funny
Atlanta almost converted on 3rd and 15, but cannot find a yard on the next play?
They couldn't find 6 inches on that one!
"Allie Sherman wrecked the Giants!" - my 5th grade bus driver
Have you never seen Mike Smith coach a game before?

Build Lasers And Stuff For More Ownage, Dude!
I already harped on this, but
I was beside myself after that blown spot on the Nicks catch towards the end of the first half. And the worst part about it was they didn’t even bother to measure! You could tell that the Giants, at least Eli, figured they had gotten the first down since the catch was clearly made beyond the stick and a measurement wasn’t even made. Incredibly bad officiating in that instance. Thank God it’s not being talked about as one of the differences in the game.
When a Ref is part of the Broadcast Crew
You know there is too much officiating in the game.
Its horrible now. The intent to correct the obvious bad calls has gone WAYYYY overboard, slowed the game down and really affects the quality of the overall experience.
I liked it when we DIDNT know who the refs were.

Thinking about your post a bit more
Refs on the broadcast are something you see in the Olympics, when some obscure sport is being broadcast on the world stage and nobody except the participants and their family members know anything about how the sport is played.
The rules for “America’s Game” should not need so much interpretation.
"Allie Sherman wrecked the Giants!" - my 5th grade bus driver
I'd much rather get the right calls
than complain about some dude in the booth and what his job used to be. Your experience is not everyone’s experience – some of us want the calls to be right, regardless if it’s a little slower

Where is this headed?
More cameras, higher def, sensors built into the field, micro-interpretation of the rules, where each word and phrase needs to be defined and interpreted in the context in which it was originally written…
IMHO – The game needs simpler rules which can be judged easily by human eyes. Getting the calls right is paramount, but the game delays are hurting flow and momentum. Then there’s the challenges, refs huddling several times per drive, and the players “calling for calls to me made” after EVERY PLAY. It is as if every snap isn’t complete unless there’s the “penalty check”. All kinds of plays are followed by the refs wasting time telling us that “there was no foul on the play” – they’re throwing flags like a reaction to every action!
Clearly, too much of these games is about officiating, rules, and calls controversy. I want to watch football. LET ’EM PLAY!
"Allie Sherman wrecked the Giants!" - my 5th grade bus driver
This doesn't happen
refs huddling several times per drive, and the players "calling for calls to me made" after EVERY PLAY.
This is nothing but straw men and slippery slope arguments. Ron Jaworski in the preseason was ranting that the booth reviewing every touchdown would cause games to be 20, 30 or more minutes longer. That simply is not the case.
In many instances, some of the measures you’re talking about, such as sensors in the ball and field, would quicken the game, not hinder it.

There is the reality, and there is the perceived reality
The perceived reality – which governs how the majority of us vote, choose, purchase, etc. – is that the game’s ebb and flow is interrupted too much because of the things I’ve cited.
The law of diminished returns is in play here. At what price do we micro-manage the officiating, calls, interpretations, etc? When does it begin to take away from the game?
Hey, I’m old and I’m old school!
"Allie Sherman wrecked the Giants!" - my 5th grade bus driver
The officiatng was a joke all weekend
and the saddest part is we had one of the BETTER officiated games even though the Falcons were not called for a single non-procedural (false start, 12 men) penalty ALL GAME. That pales in comparison to the Brees fumble or Ben’s non-called backwards lateral that should have been a huge turnover, etc, etc, etc. The league should be ashamed.
The issue is the missed calls were so blatant.
Why the heck TC has to do the officials job by letting them know there were 12 men in the huddle. Petty holding calls against the Giants, the bad spot against the Giants and the no interference call.
Cmon guys, execute your job as professionals this is not the pee wee league.
Correct Tommy Boy had to point it out to the Refs

there will always be questionable calls on both sides. I have no beef with the refereeing so far in the playoffs. To me it hasn’t been any worse than any other year. at the end of the day I truly believe it all evens out and whoever plays better on the field will win. Like someone said above perrierra is a blowhard.

Mike Pereira..that's like interviewing Bernie Madhoff...
Screw him..his Fraternity of referees..stinks..All four games they stunk..When they patch him in on a replay, I go get a beer or use that time to go take a leak..He brings zero value-add during broadcasts..and he’s biased..Which is understandable..but why waste my time..
"When I was a boy and I had no sense..I got my pecker caught in an electric fence..Well it curled my hair, tickled my balls and made me shit in my overalls..."
Funny,
Pereira, when phoning in during other Giants games, during challenges, usually says the call will go against the Giants, then Coughlin gets it right, and he looks dumb. Yesterday was the first time he agreed a call or two should have gone the Giants way. Maybe he’s learning.

You play by the rules as they are
It’s a tightly officiated, hyper-competitive league now. Roll with it. I got pissed about the Nicks non-call, but I’m trying very hard to relax more during games. My temper’s gotten away from me a few times this year, and letting stuff like this go should help.
I do think the Nicks non-call basically told CWeb he could do anything short of dragging down White and he wouldn’t get a flag. You could tell how pissed off White was. I told my wife, “That’s how you know your CB is doing his job, when the WR starts hitting him after the whistle, cheap shotting him.” Webster was clearly in his head.

Officiating in the NFL flat out sucks.
It’s horrible. Every game there are several game-changing mistakes. Through randomness or subconscious perception issues with the referees, sometimes these terrible calls are in a preponderance against one team. It changes games, it changes outcomes.
The NFL must make it a priority to improve the officiating. Get full time referees. Improve the training. make people culpable for their mistakes. For Christ’s sake can’t I ever just watch one game where the officiating is not an issue?

MHO on Mike Periera
He’s a POS. Always has been. He will support the refs and blame crap on other people at any time, if possible.
I remember him, after our terrible loss to San Fran years ago, saying that the last play was called correctly.
He is either blind, retarded, or a combination of the two (no offense to anyone with blind or mentally challenged family).
These refs are part timers, and they give it part-time diligence. Walt Coleman has been terrible for years, and somehow still remains in the ref pool.
My main problem is that I think we were flagged for holding what, 4 times? How mant times was Atlanta? I am so sick of holding calls and wish that they would either use it across the board or not at all. I would speculate that maybe it gives insight as to who the refs want to win. Can’t be proven unless some of them talk.
Quit playing not to lose. Start playing to WIN! Geeez...
UHG!
That playoff game against San Fran pissed me off so bad! To add to it, I was watching it with a firend who is, of course, a Niner fan.
Once that FG attempt on 3rd down was over, I sat back for a second, because it was obviously pass interference and illegal man downfield. Penalties offset, replay the down. Even my Nine fan friend saw it. But no. No PI? Why? What, in any version of the NFL rulebook says that wasn’t PI?
The biggest joke of all, after the refs giving SF the game on a silver platter, was the fact the SF didn’t even show up the next week. At least, as far as I can see, the G-men would have put up a fight.
Maybe we’ll get another shot in this year’s NFC Championship game.
Numbers dont lie. Your so-called elite QBs since Eli Has been a starter... Leaders in TDs: Peyton, Brady, Brees, Eli! Leaders in Yards: Peyton, Brees, Favre, Eli! Leaders in Wins: Peyton, Brady, Big Ben, Rivers, Eli! -2010 Yes, He is Elite. Yes, He is a top 5 QB in the NFL! Deal With it!
Hicks
I know Pereira isn’t the only one who has called Nicks Hicks, but it remains awful. It makes it seem like they don’t know his name is Nicks, which also makes Pereira seem like even more of a tool than he already is.
It’s fine for fan message boards, but it’s inappropriate for an article like this, imo. Just seems kind of clueless.
