Overrated/Underrated?

I'm writing a guide for the 2012 season and I thought who better to ask than Giant's fans themselves a few questions about the Giants. Congratulations on the Giants 24-2 victory over Atlanta yesterday.

Who is the most overrated player on the team?

Who is the most underrated player on the team?

Who is your choice for best rookie on the Giants?

What do the Giants need to address in the 2012 draft?

Does coach Tom Coughlin deserve all the scrutiny he gets from the media?

Why does it seem the Giants don't get things moving until the second quarter? In other words, why do the Giants fail to play up to their skill level in the first quarter of most games?

Overrated = Antrel Rolle
Underrated = Corey Webster
Best Rookie = Jacquain Williams
They need to address the LB and Tackle positions in the draft

Tom Coughlin’s scrutiny comes from being the head coach of the New York Giants, every one of his predecessors got the same treatment

I believe they dont get things moving until the second quarter because thats usually how long it takes for them to make that first down conversion play that gets their momentum going. I really dont know why it takes them until the second quarter though, its really baffling lol.

basically this

Web is very underrated, tho I’d throw Eli Manning in there too…but that’s really to dispel some ignorance that he’s not good.

Disagree on the draft stuff. They need to get younger along the OL, but they kinda have that already in Will Beatty and Mitch Petrus. Just like the OL they could use an elite LB, but so could 31 other teams. I’d rather get more explosive on offense, specifically TE.

yes even though it SHOULD be known across the league that he is a top 5 QB, people still think he is on the level of a journeyman QB such as kyle orton

It used to piss me off to no end, but now I think to myself that we are fortunate enough to have him, and the rest of the NFL teams dont

I don't want to see Eli killed

getting younger isn’t the issue, it’s just that Diehl and McKenzie suck.

by The Cole Train on Jan 9, 2012 10:24 AM EST up reply actions

he's talking about the draft

there’s no other choice, unless you’re the Eagles, to get younger by way of the draft. And the hits that Eli’s taken this year, he just resurrects like a Phoenix.

A new TE
maybe a new RB?

Overrated= Chris Snee
Underrated= Brandon Jacobs
Rookie= Jac Williams
Draft= Need some young talent for the OL

Coughlin absolutly deserves all the scrutiny he gets from the media, he’s from NY, its to be expected. And he’s not an untouchable coach like Belicheck, and I think he usually gets a fari assessment from most in the media

Lost in the playoffs of the BBV fantasy league and ended 3rd overall! Team Figging lived on with its 9-5 regular season record. Beat the (Insert Giants Opponent Here) were just too good to beat.

Overrated=Baas but it is his first year
Underrated=“bubble butt” Boothe
Rookie J williams
Draft= OT and you can never have enough DE and CB in the league today

As said above its NY. I think Eli is to focused on machanics and gameplan in the beginning, but once he figures out what the defense is doing and goes with the flow that when we see the yards and point start to rack up. He’s the guy that calls and checks all night at the joker table, then once he knows your sytle he’s all in.

by hit_hard on Jan 9, 2012 7:11 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Ohhhhh didnt think of Boothe

I was kinda thinking of Petrus, but I didnt watch the line enough to make a judgement. Boothe is definitely an underrated player, seems to be able to shift into any postition they ask him too

How is Baas overrated?

Who here actually likes him? All season people were sh*tting on him.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

As he’s gotten to know the system and gotten healthier he’s played much better.

i was going with expectations as a FA really

Seems to let DT push right through on a lot of running plays. He has gotten better clearly bcuz of boothe saving his ass. But honeslty I didn’t have anyone else to go with. Some would say Rolle but someone here pointed out that Rolle hasn’t played safety since he has been here. Which is 100 true! Let’s play him as a true safety for a season b4 we call him overrated.

by hit_hard on Jan 9, 2012 4:29 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Also another underrated player - Chase Blackburn

The guy was sitting on his couch during the season and the Giants called him up, he has been a very solid MLB for us

Herzlich is an undrafted rookie FA who hasn't seen much playing time because of his inexperience

we had a top 5 run stopper last year

in Goff yet a lot of people want Herzlich over him. You proved the point he hasn’t played 20 snaps yet he’s the heir to the MLB spot. yeah, overrated. Give me Goff any day of the week.

by The Cole Train on Jan 9, 2012 10:21 AM EST up reply actions

we dont no if Goff can be that same guy. Herz has looked pretty good in his limited snaps

he reminds me of Troy P. in how he gos after the QB with reckless abandon.

not overrated at all.

I may not be the most noble of men but in a town of lepers, im the one with the most fingers.

Giant LB'zz SUCK!! Mark Herzlich, Jacquian Williams,...Maybe .. Sadly this has been modified.

by Troy O on Jan 9, 2012 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

thats ridiculous

Herzlich has played next to nothing and was a UDFA. Pegging him to be ANYTHING other than a bench player at this point is funny. He’s a complete unknown but his fight with cancer somehow makes him a starteron the team. I’m glad he fought back from cancer but that doens’t earn him a spot on this team. Goff proved something, herzlich didn’t but Herzlich gets all the love.

by The Cole Train on Jan 9, 2012 10:44 AM EST up reply actions

i give Goff tons of cred. ..daily almost .

fact is Herz has been a big part of our improved cov. on STs. n when he played later in the season looked good. Never said he is the starter now. that still has to be determined.

I just dont understand how he can be overrated.

correction

herzlich having cancer kept teams from drafting him…talent is there, give him more snaps and time you will see that he certainly does deserve a roster spot, now is he a starter? not next season, but if you give him 2 or 3 years he could develop into a starter
i gotta love my BC guys

and yea.. hynoski gets the giants ROY this yea. by far the most playing time, and the improvement over the year is outstanding. dudes going to be a fixture at FB for years to come.

How about some info on who you are?

Who is the most overrated player on the team? – Snee/McKenzie in the media, not the force they once were

Who is the most underrated player on the team? – Will Beatty

Who is your choice for best rookie on the Giants? – J Williams, he’s going to open some eyes next year

What do the Giants need to address in the 2012 draft? – Nothing is a screaming need, LB, CB, OL all could use some more youth and talent. Maybe a pass rushing DE if we deal Osi

Does coach Tom Coughlin deserve all the scrutiny he gets from the media? – NO, he’s a solid Coach

Why does it seem the Giants don’t get things moving until the second quarter? In other words, why do the Giants fail to play up to their skill level in the first quarter of most games? The design of the Giant offense isn’t West Coast. It’s somewhat harder to operate and part is seeing how teams are reacting to you. But it allows for more big plays.

It’s already a wrap… might as well not show up tomorrow.

answers

Who is the most overrated player on the team? Jonathan Goff, even though he is on IR now that the defense is coming together and Chase Blackburn has filled in his spot, not really missing him. Not the monster PFF makes him out to be

Who is the most underrated player on the team? Eli Manning, not by BBV but by the national media, when he made his comment that he was an elite QB the likes of Brady and PManning everyone went nuts. I think that nonsense can be put to rest

Who is your choice for best rookie on the Giants? Jacquain Williams, this is more outta default, most of the other rookies didnt make much of an impact

What do the Giants need to address in the 2012 draft? Easy answer MLB position. We having been plugging adequate answers for the past couple of years. It would be nice to have an impact player at the position.

Does coach Tom Coughlin deserve all the scrutiny he gets from the media? No

Why does it seem the Giants don’t get things moving until the second quarter? In other words, why do the Giants fail to play up to their skill level in the first quarter of most games? It seems like both coordinators are reacting to what the opponent is doing and then making adjustments after halftime which works fine a majority of the time. We’ve settled for the fact that we arent going to be the ‘greatest show on turf’

So NOW that the defense is coming together.. after 15 we don’t miss him? So it took 15+ weeks to help cover up the loss of this guys and he’s OVERRATED? Not sure I understand that logic.

by eyerish9299 on Jan 10, 2012 8:27 AM EST up reply actions

Im not talking about the previous 15 weeks

was Chase Blackburn there the previous 15 weeks? No

The Giants resigned Chase, put him in Goff’s spot and he has performed just as well as Goff. The defense has picked up as well.

Yes...

Chase has played well, but he has been playing since week 13. That includes the GB game, the 1st Dallas game, and the 2nd Redskins game and the D sucked during all those games! If Chase was always this good, the Giants wouldn’t have cut him to begin with.

My thoughts

Overrated – I think McKenzie best fits at this point. He’s still treated as an elite RT when he’s really lost a step or two. Others: Osi, Snee, possibly Ballard.
Underrated – Nicks when healthy; Nicks is a top-5 receiver when healthy and I don’t think he gets viewed that way in the media. Others; DJ Ware (blitz pickup especially), Canty.
Best rookie – Williams (but I still believe in Prince long-term)
Draft needs – OL, TE, LB
Coughlin appraisal: I think sometimes, things need to change. Bill Walsh said something like “things should change after 10 years max so that things don’t get stale.” I suspect Coughlin’s shtick would get there at some point but I think he’ll retire before it happens.

I love lists

overrated – Pat Hanlon
underrated – Ronnie Barnes, Mike Sullivan. I’m guessing that Sully has something to do with the amazing footwork by Eli this season.
best rookie – Larry Izzo
needs – to replace Tom Quinn
Coughlin – back in my good graces though I don’t like his defensive hires. Fewell still a work in progress I think. I can’t stand anymore soft zone BS
