Giants 24, Falcons 2: Post-Game Reactions

Here are some of the post-game reactions following the New York Giants 24-2 victory over the Atlanta Falcons Sunday in an NFC Wild-Card Playoff game.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin:

"I think today we played outstanding defense and that set the tone for everything else that happened in the game. It was wonderful to see it and it has happened over the last two or three weeks of the season. If we can continue to play defense like that, we can make ourselves heard in this tournament."

Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan:

"We never got into a rhythm. We never moved the ball consistently. We had some opportunities. We fell short on two fourth downs. We just came up short. In a playoff game against a very good football team, you have to make those plays and we didn't make them."

Giants running back Brandon Jacobs:

"I haven't won a playoff game here since I've been in the league. We played here twice, we played the Eagles and lost, and we played Carolina one year and got shut out. So this means a lot to play a playoff game here at home and win."

Giants defensive end Justin Tuck on the team's defensive play:

"Probably our best effort so far this year. I think the last three weeks - do or die games for us - we really came out and put things together, but it still feels like we can play better and we probably will have to next week going up to Green Bay."

I was just thinking that in the car.

I wonder how BBV will treat him now that the D looks a lot like thier former selves.

I still want him gone!

It took him all season to realize that his schemes were the issue. I’m thinking the players refused to keep getting embarrassed and took some matters into their own hands.

The guy stubbornly forced his scheme onto the players

It took almost 2 seasons for him to get it. Let’s see the defense next week against GB’s offense.

Team keeps citing the last 3 games.

Beating the Jets and the ‘boys to get into the party, then a home playoff win with celebrations starting halfway through the 4th, and performances like we’ve not seen all year.

I don't remember it that way. While I just joined recently, I've been reading from before the season.

Lots of doubts about the D as they failed time and again. We all expected a lot, and got very little. Now that they are playing, we have a chance. Our O has been the same all year. Pretty great. But if our D gave up 35 today and we had to score 40, would we be feeling good about next week? I don’t think so. Cheering, definitely. But optimistic about the D? I doubt it.

by BigBlue9091 on Jan 8, 2012 8:59 PM EST up reply actions

I think we both agree the D is playing the best it has this year.

This is what we all thought was possible, and were upset about when we did not see them performing. I think what we all saw on BBV this year was less the fan’s doubting they were good than it was anger and frustration over the lack of performance.

Be optimistic…they’re playing well now!

I really, really, really think we have a good chance if the D plays that way. Hold them a few times, and we can win.

They will score points, but if we can keep them to say, 24 to 27, I like our chances very much. And I think we can run on them.

Pack 7-1 ATS @ home this year

They gotta make the price juicy to get some money in on the Gmen.

It’s not about predicting the game. it’s about getting equal money on both sides of the number. They know if it comes in to 7.5 or 7 they will get all the Packer money they can handle so they start it wide to get the Giant money to show itself.

Q: How would you rate your quarterback as a rusher?
A: How would I rate my quarterback as a rusher? Me, myself, I would give him a 10 because he got a first down and he keeps the chains moving and that’s the number one quality out of a running back that you want to see, to keep the chains moving, and 10 [Eli Manning] did a good job of it.

Q: Did he look awkward?
A: You know he did look a little awkward with the slow strides but he got it done. He got the first down and he kept moving. But Eli, I can’t say enough good things about E. I think E is a beast, and for anybody in this country to think anything different about him…ya’ll know what I mean. Peace out

Replace Pats...

…Wit Broncs.

although, any of the AFC teams could make the run. Baltimore having home-field is huge. They play much better at home, but I’d worry about the offense coming out flat (not Lewis’ D, though)

I told ya the Falcons were full of hot air with their 'predictions'...

I also told you that Eli could shred their backfield, and he did.
I was pleasantly surprised that this has been the most complete game IMO, by both sides, in the same game.
The defense didn’t get a lot of sacks but there was constant pressure, and when there wasn’t, they were stopping the run or at least harrassing their QB.
To me, second half adjustments were KEY and RIGHT ON. I have to give the coaches a high-five. Someone did something right.
Eli has matured a lot more than I ever thought he could. H was just burnin’ it up.
High five to the D.

One of my favorites: “F**k you Cruz Cruz needs to quit that g*y a** dance, he needs to stop acting like thats how to dance salsa. I bet this clown cant even know how to speak spanish. Believe me all my Puertorican Eagles fans hate you and your g*y-a** td dance. I hope GB kills these clowns!”

Its so sad

They really are in intolerant bunch

Cruz is a nice well spoken young man who came from a rough neighborhood and as a total long shot made it in the NFL. He turns down dancing with the Stars and does not do the dance when his team is getting blown out. He’s everything you would like in a modern pro athlete even if he’s not on your team.

I’m not saying Eagle fans should root for him vs thier team but he is a great kid and a good story. There are players on the Eagles I like, as well as the Cowboys becasue they are good players and good guys. Its sad they can’t recognize that, lots of hatred from those people.

Just figured I’d mention that the Giants aren’t the only team that gets a bad call now and then. Bitching about the refs is a loser’s mentality. By the way, cute stuff with the personal attacks. Especially since you’re commenting on maturity.

That's trollign buddy, coming here, and just saying the opposite without actually showing the proof,

or saying anything useful or intelligent. Curious to know where our d backs were holding and PI, cuz our Radio doppelganger of a DC has our DBs playing 15 yards off the ball, holding seems impossible in that circumstance. He didn’t give an example of the calls going your way either, but to just say, no they went against you, good thing we overcame them, is childish, and trolling. Bring some sustenance to the conversation, otherwise, on another team’s sight, it’s pretty much trolling. I’m not trying to be a dick, it’s just liek if I went over to our site and someone said our pass rush is the best, and I just commented and said no it isn’t, but keep thinking that while our D is pounding Rodgers into the ground. I wouldn’t do it, I would try to have an intelligent conversation about it.

For crying out loud, I'm sorry I forgot to tongue the Giants' balls first to let you know that I come in peace.

Can we please all stop throwing the “T” word around for no reason. If you’re looking for the reason that there isn’t much intelligent discussion to be had, responding like a douche bag to an obviously less-than-serious comment is a good place to start.

As far as the proof of a non-called DPI, where would you suggest I get that. Incomplete passes typically don’t make the highlight reel. If you have the game on your DVR go watch it. Better yet, go watch any game ever. The calls even out, and blaming the refs for a loss is pathetic. There’s a reason you don’t normally see the actual players doing it, and when they do, they get deservedly laughed at.

Packers: Working on a dynasty.

Badgers: Chin up, boys.
Brewers: Move along, nothin' to see here.

guess what?

The refs absolutely handed Green Bay that game. They absolutely did steal a TD from us and absolutely gift-wrapped one for you. I believe there was a screwjob on yet another Giants TD.

The refs handed you that one, which they Giants played better and deserved to win. It’s not going to happen again.

Extra kudos to the fans for being loud all game, and to Nicks for the dirty bird, bringing that shit back like none other. doubling cruz leaves nicks on single coverage, that tends to be detrimental to a secondarys health

indeed it does.

I had a discussion/light argument with a guy the other day who insisted the Jets were still better. My winning argument? (assuming you’ve seen the pic of Shark Manchez in that underarmour belly shirt, as I aluded to before my closing statement), I said, Eli has a smoking hot wife, but I heard Sanchez has a smoking hot Boyfriend, so I guess you win. The guy said not one word after that.

Final score 17-14 Giants win.

The first game was 38-35 just like the Pats. If history wants to repeat itself then the Giants win 17-14.

Now we just have to get Rodgers to chuckle…“We’re only gonna score 17 points?? OK…”

So lets get this strait… when the Mets are in the news for the worst things possible and are on every front page, back page and lead the sports shows… are they considered NY’s team?

Michael Kay is such a corporate shill

Whats funny about a lot of the Jet “media coverage” is a lot of it is payed for by the owner, thats what cracks me up.

That whole Rex Ryan press confereance last week to announce nothing was so the media would have something to cover instead of the Giants win vs Dallas and playoff game vs ATL.

Its so funny if John Mara wanted to be a prick, he could threaten FAN and say talk more about the Giants or we’ll go to another station come contract time but he doesn’t because he’s not an insecure prick thats concerned about his fan base.

Reading their Open game thread from today’s game got me laughing. They are so PISSED that they’re not in the playoffs and still think they’re some kind of great team. They HATE Jacobs, Cruz because he torched Nnamdi, Eli because he’s better than any QB Philly has ever had, Osi because he’d make Babin into a 2nd stringer, and it’s so funny to read.

Good thing I like Jason B or I’d have no issues being a nasty troll over there looking to get banned.

Is God Aweful. He s so crazy lucky, yhat s what defies logic. Steelers were rocked with injuries. He can only win if he gets crazy big plays and his opponent cant score.

I dont hate Tebow, but he is unwatchable as.a QB!

I don't hate him either, I think he's not a very good QB.

I also think if the Steelers had half their starting o-line playing, Hampton playing, Keisel playing, Mendenhall playing, it would have been different.

NOTE TO GILBRIDE

This is what you run when the other team has no safeties back deep. Not the go route you ran last week. Give your QB more of a target.

That was Clark's fault, or whoever the other safety is.

He ran down like he was going to blitz, got caught doing it at the wrong time, Tebow got the snap, and by the time the safety turned to run back to his position, the ball was almost being caught, I saw that play coming as soon as that safety ran up. He cost the Steelers the game.

From ESPN:

“I will never, ever call Eli an athlete,” Chris Snee had said in the buildup to Giants 24, Atlanta Falcons 2.

“Well,” Snee said on the way to Green Bay, “maybe he is a little more athletic than I initially gave him credit for.”

Maybe, maybe not. But when he walked by Snee in the immediate wake of his very first home playoff victory, Manning reminded the offensive lineman that world-class athleticism isn’t a requisite trait for a world-class quarterback.

“Fourteen-yard average,” Eli told him.

“That’s what he had,” Snee said, “so I couldn’t really argue with him.”

Sorry,.my post was probably confusing

He s tied to Eli due to the draft. Eli gets so little credit and he gets so much. It makes me crazy! That divison is so bad, Eli would win it every year. Similar to Vick. I have a bunch of eagles fans as friends. Eli would have got them to the playoffs, no question! Eli doesnt yell,.isnt demonstrative, and everyone questions him as a leader, just stupid.

Well I understand what your saying and your right...

What I don’t understand is why Eli doesn’t get the credit he deserves..I just don’t get it..The only analyst that has consistently praised Eli is Deon Sanders..“I believe in Eli” he always says..The local papers of there?..All they talk about is Sanchez..I don’t know if he’ll ever be appreciated up there..All I know is he’s working his way into the Hall of Fame..IMO..

It has to be Peyton

It makes no logical sense. Its unpopular on this site for me to say this, but how many QBs win more games that they are suppossed to lose than Eli? None. Eli wins games we should.lose. He is spectacular. If we support him in the draft and FA,.he will pass Peyton.

he did a nice job jamming up the middle and made a nice stop on Turner on a third and short. . . . Jones and Herz had nice camps but man Chase is a solid vet who knows his position glad they picked him back up.

Yeah I mentioned that in here about a mile up the thread..

He was clearly in charge and was stuffing the run the whole game…Man I hope he stays…

A stat from CBS Sports

Wild-card Judgements

The Giants defense: Over the last three games, it allowed four touchdowns. Period. That means opponents were blanked on 37 of their last 41 drives, and, yeah, I like that a lot when your next opponent is Green Bay.

Brandon Jacobs

He says a lot of stupid thinbgs but to be fair he has played real well recently. a 100 yard game a few weeks ago and a huge game on sunday. He had a ton of YAC on the game. the 4th and 1 when done 2 to 0 was huge. without a great spin he would have fallen short of the first down. I thought they should have kicked the field goal so I guess I was wrong on that 1, I take the sure points before the 4th quarter.

BTW the penalty on Williams late in the game for roughing was a total joke….

Yeah BJ has been playing his heart out..

And yeah these refs are horrible with the calls they are making..not just our game..all four games this weekend the ref crews have sucked…The worst was the Saints/Lions..The Lions should have had a 14 point lead going into halftime with momentum..but they got ripped off by the refs..Now did that cost them the game?..or would the Saints still mount a comeback?..I don’t know..But it is hard to keep a ship sailing if the wind is taken out of its sails..

Blackburn has been

a godsend. The guy is starting at MLB and playing in many situations.

He makes the tackles he should… After HErzlich went down he has been great… He should be on the team in some capacity next year…..

Congratulations Giants/fans on a dominant performance. I don’t post here (well a couple times) but I read all the time. Great blog

I knew they thought the Nicks catch was a 1st down!

What a complete botch job by the refs on that one. The bad spot is one thing, but when you don’t even measure and just place the ball down, it’s no wonder you have players thinking they had the first down. That was a huge call at the time, and thank god it ended up not mattering. I realize how negative it is to bring up one of the few bad parts of an otherwise great win, but I hope those refs are held accountable for that in some way. You could not have done the job worse in that instance.

Refs

The refs couldnt spot the ball the whole game it was obvious on few plays. Sitting in the stands i was shocked how bad there spots were mostly no in the giants favor. Especially on the nicks play im few rows up from field abd i was amazed how that wasnt a first down amd sadly eli didnt know if he did he woulda jus done our number one play(the draw). Number one called play that is. All i can say is thankfully we took care of the falcons enough to not be calling for the refs heads but this officating needs to get better and i know well have to beat the pack n the refs i just hope the refs arent planning on bringing there same attack they did in week 13 when we played them last.
