Victor Cruz: The 2011 Rookie Of The Year?

Victor Cruz of the New York Giants celebrates as he runs off of the field after defeating the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium on January 1, 2012 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)

It could be argued that this should be considered Victor Cruz's rookie year. Cruz came into the league last season and had a phenomenal preseason. On August 16, 2010, the Giants' first preseason game, this scrappy, young man from Paterson, NJ had six-receptions for 145 yards and three-touchdowns. Cruz had more reception yards and touchdowns than any other receiver in the 2010 NFL preseason. After suffering a hamstring injury that October, the rookie season of Victor Cruz was a wash.

The voting for the 2011 NFL Rookie Of The Year is under way. The wealth of talent of this year's nominees is tremendous, rightly so. I think it is safe to say that Cam Newton is the odds-on favorite to win this prestigious award. However, if Victor Cruz was added to this year's ballot, would he upset the apple cart? Would he win the thing outright? Let's take a look at this year's nominees.

Victor Cruz broke two-franchise records this year, most receptions yards in a single-season and the longest reception record. There is no question that Cruz had one of the standout performances of the year. Sadly, his hammy from last year may have cost him the 2010 Rookie Of The Year Award, if his preseason play was any indication of what his regular season would look like. Would Cruz walk away with the award this year, if he was pitted up against the 2011 nominees? Cast your vote. Share your opinions.

but I factor in what they did for their teams

and the position they are currently in, Smith has been a reason why the 9er defense is so good and number 2 seed. Same can be said for Dalton, and Bengal team that was predicted to have like 2 wins but two rookies on offense have been the difference in them playing this weekend.

That’s just my opinion, when the voting takes place, they don’t factor in what the team is too much, its more about the individual performance and Cam has a big edge there. Not Newton’s fault the CAR defense stinks.

Yes I believe he would based on the impact he had getting us in the playoffs...

Cam Newton had a great rookie year, but not many wins..but I really think Cruz was the biggest positive impact player in the league..

Even if he were a rookie they'd give the award to Fig Newton

To me Cruz would deserve it hands down. I’ve been looking at WR first seasons, and his was historic. Just look at his numbers compared to Randy Moss.

Cam Newton

4000 passing yards by a rookie is amazing. Plus stat left out above – 706 rushing yards (26th in the league) and 14 more TDs. And with a team that wasn’t very good. He proved a lot of people wrong.

I like Cruz more than Cam.

But its Cam Newton as the rookie of the year. I know it takes time for wr’s to get up to speed in the NFL. But for Cam as a 2011 drafted Rookie to come in during a locked out summer and put up the numbers he did at the QUARTERBACK position is rare, so rare that he set the rookie record book.

If not for him, Its by far Victor Cruz

"they try to do what he do, and been where he's been, but they get folded in two.....he's the dude"

by semsemma on Jan 6, 2012 1:30 PM EST reply actions

Cruz's numbers for a first or 2nd year guy

Are historically great, we’re talking Megatron, Moss, Rice, Sterling Sharpe, Isaac Bruce level

And his numbers are at the top of all WRs this year (Newton set a rookie record, but he wasn’t a leader amongst all QBs)

Yeah there were some unknowns, but most of them seem to have gotten hurt. If Cruz is only as good as Gary Clark (and Cruz’s numbers were better but comparable) we have 2 #1 caliber WRs at the beginnings of their careers. A bit like Swann, Stallworth or Holt/Bruce. If JJ or Barden become a real threat (I’m assuming MM leaves as a free agent), this offense might go nuclear.

One thing Cam did was electrify a fan base that suffered from deep severe depression..I listen everyday to a Charlotte based radio show..and fans up there are showing up to games again, so if single-handedly filling seats counts, it goes to Newton..

Call me biased--because I am

But I think, if Cruz were eligible, he would give Cam a run for his money. Realistically, Cam would probably still win, because, as someone else said, he is a QB and they get all the love. But my vote would still be with Victor.

these are the guys with over 400 pass attempts and a QB rating over 80

Newton is in good company, but its not the same as Cruz

I think Newton is a star, but Cruz’s season compared to his peers (other WRs was ridiculous)

Yes..but if you add Newtons rushing yards..I think it brings him up that list quite a bit..

But I now understand your point about Cruz..awesome stuff

Historically running QBs don't keep running

Its the injury thing. and of course they’ll keep coaching him to only run as a last resort

The scary thing (and I agree with you) is that I think he already is doing that...

Man I hope they stink again next year when we play them..If they put real players behind him..We’ll be in for it..They need a defense..I hope they don’t find it..
He has to slide though, but so far he hasn’t had to why slide in to the endzone when you can walk?..haha

I remember Steve Young and Randall Cunningham

You could see there were guys that were aching to lay them out. They’d give up a big pass cheating, and eventually the running shortened Young’s career.

I agree with you on Carolina, their offense has plenty of pieces, but their D is shot.

Its between Cam and Peterson and I go Cam Newton. 4000 yards passing, 35 total TD’s. Those are crazy numbers for a rookie QB.

Freedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitudes...

How a second year WR with 1530 some yards compares to a rookie with 4000 pass yards and 35 TDs I'll never know!

I think people hate him cause all of the icon nonesense. He’ll change peoples minds.

This was all hypothetical..A 'what if' he was a rookie question is all...

Newton has it hands-down..

by Bobbiblue on Jan 6, 2012 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

All of which...

I wouldn’t exactly consider last year much of a “rookie” performance from cruz.
He sat the whole year out, aside from the preseason.
THIS is his first year playing in a regular season.
To me, this is his rookie season…without playing the semantics game of course.

by Sean Kerr on Jan 6, 2012 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

He played in 3 games last year and had no stats.

So he had OTAs, and went to camp last season and played in 4 preseason games. Active for 3 games. That was his rookie season. So he had all of this on top of all the stuff this season. Not a rookie and its a bad comparison. He wasn’t totally raw.

we get that

it’s a hypothetical to create some discussion. IMO even if Cruz was eligible Cam wins it and deserves to win.

In truth, Cam deserves it

but may not get it being from such a small market. Aldon Smith is very very good. As is Von Miller.

Cam Newton will win rookie of the year

and deservedly so.

JPP + Cruz + Nicks + Eli

Yea, I'm excited about the next 10 years.

by baadfish on Jan 7, 2012 9:41 AM EST reply actions

Agreed.

Cruz has been invaluable for the Giants and without him there is no postseason. But Cam Newton is going to make the Panthers a serious team again very soon. And Besides, how can you not vote for a kid with 14 rushing TD’s as a QB and 60% completion? Dude is beastly. Thank God he didn’t end up in Washington!

From Steve Smith to Victor Cruz and Plaxico Burress to Hakeem Nicks,
so Long as Eli throws, the Giants will be fine.
