Patriots Coach Bill Belichick Talks About Tom Coughlin

Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots and Tom Coughlin of the New York Giants are two of the most accomplished coaches in the NFL, and they have ties to each other dating back to their time as assistant coaches under Bill Parcells with the Giants.

Belichick was asked about Coughlin today during his press briefing.

"He's withstood the test of time. He's tough; his teams are disciplined. They play with great competitiveness and play smart. They're a good situational football team. They force you to go out there and beat them. They do a lot of things well," Belichick said. "That's kind of the way Tom is: Tom is tough, he's very detailed, he has a lot of experience, he's an intense coach and I think that's reflected in the way his teams play."

Belichick said he and Coughlin have maintained a relationship over the years.

"We've talked about common problems. He's shared things with me and I've shared things with him," Belichick said. "That's part of a friendship, that's part of a mutual respect that we have."

Coach Belichick was a major player in our first two SB wins

I take pride in how far he has come as a coach, kind of wish we were playing Baltimore instead.

I think you're crazy

I’d much rather see the Patriots than the Ravens. The Ravens match up much better against the Giants.

by el pope on Jan 24, 2012 5:05 PM EST up reply actions

Not so much the match up I am worried about

I think the Giants are capable of handling either team, it’s more for my piece of mind. I can fully get into hating the Ravens and love watching a Harbough get schooled. If the Giants were not in the SB I would fully be all in on Belichick getting that fourth ring and putting his name up their with the all time greats.

Is it Giants/Yankees? Giants/Mets? How does it work?

That separation

is not very true anymore.

It used to be the Yanks and Giants played in the same stadium while the Mets and Jets also were in the same area, so then you’d get that separation.

But since they moved to New Jersey and there’s been a few generations, there’s much more of a mix (I’m a mets, devils, and Giants fan).

Also you have to remember the Football Giants used to play were the Baseball Giants did, so for the old timers (like my grandfather) there’s some resentment to the Yankees who would never root for them.

The Giants are capable of handling both teams.

However, the Ravens can run the ball, and the Giants forte isn’t stopping the run, but rushing the passer.

Also, the Ravens have a very good defense.

Th better match-up for the Giants is the Patriots. Soft defense and a passing team with an immobile QB is great.

Unfortuantly they drew my Giants so now, no thanks to a 4th ring for either.

Well that's true.

I don’t see a defense in the league that could give us a beating like San Fran did.

And even if our offense had a poor performance we’d put up more numbers than the Ravens likely would.

With the Patriots, we know they can put up points as can we, so the game boils down to which teams defense plays the best.

Harbaugh did a great job this year, but he got schooled by Coughlin

The Giants were coached to fall down instead of getting hit because Coughlin knew that the muddy conditions could lead to a back-breaking turnover. Harbaugh went away from the run when it was gaining yardage, and went pass-crazy even though Smith was regressing. Even after it was obvious Williams was not doing a good job as the returner, he didn’t tell him to just fair catch the ball.

It depends on what he does with the Offense

Harbough is a poor loser, and carries himself kind of cocky, he won’t ever be Mr. Popular around the NFL, but with that D, if he can build a good offense in the next 2 years the Niners can make a run. they play in the West so winning that division is only a 9 or 10 win season.

what kind of coach basically plants the idea in his team’s head that if they don’t beat the Steelers and get home field advantage, they’ll never win the Super Bowl? A Harbaugh, that’s who. Gatorade showers in weeks 9 and 13? check. Corny speeches about mighty men? Check. Crying about the music played at an opposing team’s stadium, Check. Telling the sideline reporter at halftime that your team won’t win unless they get holding calls (vs San Diego late this year) Check.. Hire a consultant to beat one team? Check (which begs the question, why isn’t that guy the coach?)

Rex Ryan without the bold predictions.

Those are some pretty good observations

Jim changed the culture of that team mighty fast, which is a bug accomplishment. But when you can’t lose and act graciously it means that there is something wrong psych wise. Trust me, Bill Parcells, BIll Bellichick, and now Tom Couglin, we’ve seen some, very competitive guys out here (and who competed harder than Bill Walsh?). They all manage to at least be civil after the game. But when the game is over and you’ve lost, it’s the respect you have for your opponent that should kick in. To me his behavior says he didn’t really respect us.

Why does that matter?

Simple, if you don’t respect your opponent, and you always think you’re particular genius will trump everything, you are prone to making blunders. People are killing Kyle Williams. I checked and it seems he had 2 fumbles in 28 touches this season, but 20 of those were receptions. In this game he was KR and PR and WR. Was it wise to give a kid with ball security issues that big a role? When you think you’ve got all the answers, you take those risks. It backfired big time.

If he doesn’t change, I predict that Harbaugh will fall prey to these decisions in the future.

I gained respect for Bill Belichick after watching

the NFL special “Football Life” where they walked through the 2009 season with Belichick. They covered the pre-game meetings, meetings with coaches, and everything else. It gave a really good insight into the life of a head coach. The part that particularly won me over was when he was in Giants stadium and choked up a bit reflecting on the days he spent there as a coordinator. I put a link below for anyone interested in watching it.

Thats not true

after the 1990 season Parcells waited until May to resign . . . BB was the hot assistant at the time and Clevland hired him about a week after SB 25.

By the time BB was let go from Clevland following the 1995 season the Giants had Reevs as the head coach and were not in position to hire a new HC until 1997. GY was retiring that year, when was Young supposed to hire BB? Now Young could have gotten Parcells back instead of Fassel in 1997 but that was becasue both Young and Parcells had huge egos and could not get along.

by Landeta on Jan 25, 2012 11:49 PM EST up reply actions

It's been widely reported that George Young did not believe that Bill Belichick could be a successful head coach

It wasn’t personal, but he did think that he couldn’t get along with people and had trouble nt having the final word.

I’d say Young was dead on correct. Bellichick got run our of Cleveland not cause his record was so bad, but because he acted like a giant douchebag almost from day 1. He was rude and condescending to everyone including the owner. Many think hat the humiliation he suffered there is what tempered his ego just enough to be successful in New England.

BUT before we go and laud him a genius. We should remember that he was on the hot seat in New England right before Bledsoe got hurt. The Pats were underperforming, and it was said he can coach a defense but no offense, he is a defensive coordinator. Now I don’t know about you, but most “Genius” head coaches make the move to a Hall of Fame guy before the guy in front of him gets injured. He should be sending Mo Lewis a huge gift on his birthday every year, cause without that injury to Bledsoe, he might have been the next Dick LeBeau.

None of this diminishes BBs accomplishments, but when we look back at his career as a great coach, you also have to recognize that he wasn’t great day 1, and it took a bit of good luck along the way.

“Situational Football” is BB’s favorite expression. He uses it as an ultimate compliment about our own Defense and Offense. He preaches being expert at 2 minute drills, double-scores, 2 minute D.

He’s basically saying that your team knows how to deal with any situation and has a routine and procedure for whatever you throw at them. They are experienced basically. So take it as a compliment.

He would have a hard time getting that from another team considering his health status. The Colts will probably ask him to take less dough and draft Luck. If Peyton loves the Indy Organization or Indy himself, I think he will take less money and stay. I don’t think he needs the cash. And what better legacy could he leave to the Colts, then to mentor Luck a few years and then retire the greatest thing since sliced bread in Colts history

Peyton aint done yet.

First off, he aint taking a paycut. He already did that when they wrote the contract last year. & the colts arent gonna pay him that $28M roster bonus. They could spend that on 3-4 decent free agents AND an Andrew Luck.

And WHEN Eli wins his 2nd SB in 11 days, Peyton will b chomping at the bit for another one of his own. So i highly doubt he calls it a career. If hes healthy, he’d get 3 productive seasons, if not more.

I do think he’d b willing to come to the Jets. More chances to play Eli & theyd all b in meaningless preseason games. The only snag would b him clearing waivers. Is a SB worth $35M to the Jets, Skins, Cowboys, Vikings, or Broncos? (Those are teams i think r a Manning away & might pay for it.)

This is the craziest part about the Manning family: the oldest son, Cooper Manning

Cooper Manning, the oldest and the least known of the three, was an All-State High School receiver. The only reason why he didn’t play at the collegiate level and then the pros is because he was diagnosed with spinal stenosis. That effectively ended his football playing days.

But imagine, the Manning family has two ELITE QB’s in Eli and Peyton.
Then, imagine if they had an All-Pro WR to go along with that.

Archie and Olivia certainly passed down some darn good genes.

Gronkowski insists he doesn't even have an injury.

He’s got a history of being like a bionic man when it comes to injury. But that injury according to the medical experts should be an ankle ligament tear. But he says nothing happened. Which must mean 1) He’s ridiculously lucky. 2) It’s just a sprain (he wore a walking boot), or 3) He feels no pain.

3 is very possible. He’s a beast. If you guys had him, you’d love him. He’s achieved cult status in NE.

sadly...

these comments are whatever to me…and frankly, it’s because of the source

I like the passion. I like how he included the fans and cooks and all that. but really, it’s just talk. he is a blowhard.

last week he told davis to watch what he wished for. davis got rolle in pass coverage and promptly abused the (bleep) outta him.

Yes, he took credit (for once) and man’d up, but we’re passed that. we’re beyond pointing the finger and frankly, after winning the game, no one really even cared about that play. This site was more concerned with what happened on the 2nd V. Davis TD.

Have fun, enjoy this, talk as much as you want. But just know that, for me… it’s going in one ear and straight out the other.

I hope he keeps the Patriots players names out his mouth this week and keeps it respectful. He can make his guarantees and give as much credit to the giants as he wants. just keep it respectful and don’t give Hernandez and Gronk any addition fuel for the fire.

I think its necessary to have one of those guys.

It might be idiotic, and he might not be a great player…but every time somebody asks someone on the team about Antrel, the first and foremost thing that they have to say is that he says what they are unable to say.

Should it be said? Not all of it, absolutely not…but he thrives in being the scapegoat, the pressure reliever for everyone else…whatever they want to say, its gone vicariously through Rolle. Problem is, you can’t have more than one guy doing the talking….we don’t (Jets do). He’s one of the most well-liked players in the league for a reason. He brings that asshole swagger to the Giants…one that Tuck could never bring.

We all hate him for it, but I truly and honestly believe that he relieves a ton of stress in that locker room.

I dont hate Rolle, but he needs to do what he says or shut his mouth! Eli said.that he is elite, then showed the world what we already knew – Well, I know that Rolle is very good,.and so does he… So go show everyone else!

Okay let's put this in perspective

The last 4 weeks the Giants secondary has delt with…

Jason Witten… 7 Rec. 69 yards 0 TD’s
Tony Gonzalez…. 4 Rec 44 yards 0 TD’s
Jermichael Finley…. 4 Rec 37 yards 0 TD’s
Vernon Davis… 3 Rec 112 yards 2 TD’s

Basically murderers row of Tight Ends, Rolle and the secondary are doing an excellent job, Davis made 2 huge plays but the rest of the game he was pretty much silent. Rolle talking is what he does, so let him be.

He's like AP

A solid but not great player who leads very well. Kinda slow in coverage but has a nack for making key tackles or breaking up some plays.

Like AP he’s also got a big mouth and chippy attitude. If the G-Men could pull this one off he’ll be funny in post game interviews.

by tommy d. on Jan 25, 2012 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

Oh and by the way

The old school Giants fans know thatwe beat the Bills bc Billy Boy advised our defense that “In order to win, (Thurman) Thomas needs to gain 100+ yards”. To me, this game is no different. We cannot allow the Pats to dictate what we do. They will want to.shorten the game, they will want to limit touches for Nicks, Cruz and MM. We need to throw early and often. They cannot keep up with us. KG please implimemt this. Eli will take us there, justgive him the opportunity!

by Giant Ken on Jan 24, 2012 9:58 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I think

They will dare us to run. We have bern pretty bad at it this year and are no where near as explosive as we r throwing. We just cant take the bait.

by Giant Ken on Jan 24, 2012 10:05 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I'm sure they will try and incorporate the way the 49'rs attacked us

Don’t give up the big play stay deep and make us drive down the field. The question is can they get pressure on Eli, becuase if they don’t it’s going to be a long night for them.

by Late for Dinner on Jan 25, 2012 8:07 AM EST up reply actions

Yes, but im talking about our offense

We are better than theirs. They cannot keep up with us, they dont want us to get up on them and pin our ears back and destroy brady. They may try the same against us, but our offense is miles ahead.of the Ravens. They will need to try to keep it close. I expect 7 or less in the box to start the game.

by Giant Ken on Jan 24, 2012 11:03 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Yes, they will run the ball a lot

Especially since the Giants will probably have their coverage linebackers on the field most of the time. Kiwanuka would probably get abused by their tight ends, so I doubt he sees the field much. The general perception is that they throw the ball all day, but they actually have a fairly balanced offense. The first key to the defense will be, as always, stop the run.

Go Giants!

by weejer on Jan 24, 2012 10:15 PM EST via mobile reply actions

We can still beat them up and keep them guessing on D, but we r the better offensive team. We need to score 35 and make them try to keep up with us, because, they cannot, no way,no how. Make Brady.stand there while our beasts beat his a$$.

People do it to us, and everyone is up in arms.

I hope this conversation doesn’t continue cause it is hypocritical and gets us nowhere.

Nobody is going to say, “Oh yeah, you are right, we played a weak schedule and are lucky to be here. Your schedule was so much tougher and you deserve to be here more than we do and therefore, you guys have the better team.”

Pats overcame alot of adversity to win the division, and then win the AFC. I actually don’t like the fact that we go into this game having beat you already. I have always believed that when two good teams are involved, that it favors the loser the second time around.

Wow just realized that young Bill Belicheck looks exactly like my H.S. Baseball coach

Not surprisingly, we won the conference, and state league title last year

I truly dont think gronky will be 100% he has some serious ligament damage to his ankle not that hes 4.2 40 fast to begin with but i gotta think this injury is gonna really effect his effectiveness in this game.

No love for this guy

Yeah thanks for the ancient history but since then he’s proven to be an egomaniac, that cheats to win and is a poor loser.

Blah blah but that makes him a competitor, Blah blah.

No love for this guy.

Egomaniac? Poor Loser?

And I won’t say anything about the cheating since I don’t think it’s true but no one listens to logic.
But face it, you’d love BB if he was your coach.

Lakers and Patriots forever.

don't like his demeanor

the handshake thing is just poor. Spygate was just poor, the way he handles veterans is just poor.

I don’t care about the man’s record as a coach, he seems to be a total jerk, but this again is just my opinion, based loosely from observations over the years.

I'm confused

elaborate the handshake thing.

every coach has skeletons in his closet.
And how does he handle veterans poorly??? We’ve had so many veterans who rave about him. Bruschi, Rodney, Ty Law, Ellis Hobbs, Vrabel, Seau, Moss, Gaffney, McGinest, Carter, Anderson, Ellis, etc.

Lakers and Patriots forever.

Dude...he went and hugged Coughlin before the final kneeldown.

Then he left the field before the final kneeldown. No competetive person will stick around for what they know is just torture. I’m not really feeling that was a big deal.

Lakers and Patriots forever.

Did you spike your coffee this morning???

He’s a HOF coach for crying out loud…
