From a Niners Fan

What a game. The game last night was such a roller coaster ride of highs and lows for me being a Niners fan and I'm sure it was for many of you Giants fans as well. While this game did not quite have the same feel as some of the previous battles between these two storied franchises it did provide quite a bit of nail biting excitement and excruciating pain (mostly for me). Those were two teams playing some great football and if you guys hadn't stripped the ball at the end they might still be going back and forth in the 30th overtime period right now.

What can I say about our defense? They played their asses off and held Eli and one of the more deadly offenses in check for most of the night. The giants defense wasn't too shabby either holding us to 1 third down conversion for the entire game. We just could not break free from your secondary last night. Vernon Davis was the only guy who got anything going and when he was doubled our offense sputtered.

Victor Cruz absolutely abused everyone who lined up across him. The frustration of seeing him make play after play while our own receivers caught about one pass all night was gut wrenching. And then there was the two blunders when Eli actually made a mistake but we couldn't make the interception like we've done all year because we ran into our own guys. But those things happen and there were missed opportunities for both sides.

And Kyle Freaking Williams. I really like the guy and he's got some serious skills to be a slot receiver but man...fool me once and all that stuff.

Congratulations on a well deserved, hard fought victory. You guys took advantage of our mistakes and we didn't take advantage of yours. Go kick the snot out of Tom Brady and Belicheck. I'll be rooting for you guys!

Thanks. For my money the best unit out there yesterday was the 9ers’ defense. They were fierce; Eli hadn’t been abused like that in a long time.

I'd say ever.

That’s the finest beating our boy’s ever taken in my opinion. That Niners pass rush was relentless in the 2nd half.

this extra week has come at a perfect time

Can’t think of a better time for Eli to have another week off. I’m sure his neck, shoulder, arm (also from throwing so much), back, face, and everything else on him is sore right now. Never seen him take a beating like that. I really do enjoy this extra week, not only for Eli, but the entire team has some nagging injuries and now they have some extra time to heal, especially for Tuck, Bradshaw, Osi, and Ballard.

Incredible game. Both teams played well enough to win. We just ended up making 1 more play that night and it won us the game. Without a doubt, that was the best front 7 the giants have played against. The pressure on Eli was suffocating. I think you guys will be winning many more NFC west titles in the future

by NYG_Slater on Jan 23, 2012 2:02 PM EST reply actions

Your front 7 is mighty good

They brought the lumber last night. That was some throwback football. It was good to watch some defense for a change. You guys will undoubtedly be back for another run next year.

Niners have a hell of a team and as long as Harbaugh's there, they'll be a tough out no matter who's in that uniform.

was a great game, and as someone with a Niners fan in the family I’m glad that it was either you or us in the Bowl (of course happier that it turned out to be the G’s). Niners defense is probably the best the NFL has to offer and I think their offense is still good, just ran into the buzzsaw of the Giants defense.

We’ll see you all next season at least once, possibly/probably twice.

what a game

you defense is freakishly good. Alex Smith gained vindication. your defense is awesome. After the offseason and draft, you should be able to obtain a couple more weapons for A. Smith to compliment with Gore. Gore is a beast, I hated how everytime we wrapped him up, he got 4 yards. You defense is quite possibly the best defense in the league.

Oh, we won TOP, First Downs, I believe total yards, and TO. and still you defense kept you guys in the game, into overtime..

Have I mentioned you have a good defense? Even my dad (loooong time giants fan) was in awe of just how fast your defense is. Good luck next year!

Regardless of what happens, No playoffs, playoffs, no superblow, superblow.... The 2011/2012 is one of my favorite Giants Teams of all time.

49ers defense is ferocious. They don’t miss tackles, they hit, and play violent. Your boys played one hell of a game.

by Giants56 on Jan 23, 2012 3:20 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I really don't want to see the 49ers again anytime soon

I agree with all the kudos to your defense. Our O-line was abused by the pass rush. Eli was under siege on every drop back. There was a stretch in the 2nd half where every Giant fan (and coach, and player, for that matter) said, “Just give Eli time – he’ll get it done”…but there was no keeping your guys off of him, period.

Old time, rough ‘em up, we’re gonna hit you till you quit defense. Hats off to 49ers; a real championship-caliber opponent.

And watching the 9ers last night left me so impressed with your D,that despite playing a great game I can’t even say Pat Willis is the best D player in the league anymore because Justin and Aldon Smith might be even better than him!You guys looked like as good or better up front than any recent Pittsburgh front 7!
Hats off to you guys…hope Eli never has to face that again, although I’m sure you guys will be in the hunt on a yearly basis now!

Nuff respect due to the 2011 49ers.

Now I know what New England fans felt like in SB42. The 49ers have proven to me that the Giants truly have a great QB because he overcame a fierce defense. I knew the 9ers would be a great team once the right adjustments were made and you guys didn’t disappoint. Great game and thanks.

If you want to argue that Manning is a) not a great quarterback or b) not the best quarterback in franchise history your credibility is automatically shot.

49ers have always been a class organization.

I really envied you guys in the early years of Montana’s career and during the Steve Young era, when the Giants weren’t doing much. These things run in cycles. You’ll have your day again, and probably not before too long.

Thanks for this

And for leaving us enough of Eli to be able to play one more game. The 49ers are great, and I’d be rooting for them if they’d gotten to move on. I hope we meet in the playoffs again next year.

Thanks for all the comments

And the recs too! Though nothing can take away the sting of losing the way we did, it’t cool to know the Niners are finally getting some respect again.
And like I said before, take down the New England Brady bunch.

Call me cautiously optimistic....because I know what the Niners do to people who have real optimism (see the last 8 years).

Best part is

Giants and Niners have renewed their rivalry again, next time we meet it will be a huge game, just like old times again!

by Late for Dinner on Jan 24, 2012 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

Niners play old school, smash mouth football..

They are a solid team and will be for years to come, and they are fun to watch..it’s nice to see defensive focused team who battles out every play to the last whistle rather than high flying offenses putting up 50 points a game…thanks for the great game, rivalry seemed to just get renewed, can’t wait til’ next season, but i won’t be looking that far ahead until feb. 6th..

by GMEN 44 on Jan 25, 2012 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

and thank goodness for this two week break before the big dance...

I’ve rarely seen a defense move that quickly, hit that hard, and have all players converge on the ball as fast as your team does…once a player was hit once, the runner seemed to get swallowed up in that niner D… if our Gmen weren’t battle tested prior to this game, we certainly are now… I hate to say this, but because of that game Eli will think that Pats D are a bunch of softies…that D hit harder than any team i’ve seen this season!

by GMEN 44 on Jan 25, 2012 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

GL

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t upset about the Bradshaw fumble on the quickest whistle of all time, but your D played really well and kept the offense from converting anything late in the game. The offense should have been able to do something to overcome William’s muff in regulation, but you shut them down. Eli did well making throws despite the elements and pressure. Alex needs to learn that kind of poise in the face of danger.

Most of the Giants fans were great to chat/argue with. I’ll probably be flamed for the first comment, but my only problem with Giant’s fans is the junk some people have been spewing about the refs being biased against you. It goes both ways.

Good luck I guess…still trying to figure out the stories of Giants players saying they were trying to re-concuse (is that a word?) Williams with blows to the head.

by mrg80 on Jan 24, 2012 1:20 PM EST reply actions

it was a fast whistle, but there is no set time a player has to be "stood up" of forward progress stopped.

The replay showed whistle being blown and player going back with ball still (just barely) in hand.

So your comparison is slightly off. Refs didn’t kill you STs Williams did . Sadly he had a pretty good day otherwise.

I may not be the most noble of men but in a town of lepers, im the one with the most fingers.

Giant LB'zz SUCK!! Mark Herzlich, Jacquian Williams,...Maybe .. Sadly this has been modified.

by Troy O on Jan 24, 2012 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

Ref's calls usually have a way of working out in the big picture....

Can’t hate on you guys feeling like Bradshaw got a quick whistle. Seems lately that a lot of calls have gone against us like the Jennings non fumble. However that was a great Defensive game played by both teams, and I have no doubt the Niners are back, might not look like it now, but your future is bright!

by Late for Dinner on Jan 24, 2012 3:11 PM EST reply actions

Honest assessment

Credit to you. Wish all the NFL fans had the same spirit.

We come to play and whichever team wins, wins, no crying.

All the Giants should play like Mark Bavaro.
TQ, DD and KMac Must Go!
TC, PF, KG, will stay but should go for the long term good.
It is equally worthless when people are always optimistic or always pessimistic. Either way I take their opinion with a pound of salt because I know they only have one setting. I post my own thoughts, not what either side wants to read.

Giants Fan

Much Respect to the 49ers !!! What a dangerous defense & this has been an amazing year for my Giants winning against all odds ! Simply Amazing ! I am pretty sure teams that have to play the Niners next year are going to have their hands full… GB is another great team who got cold at the wrong time, still the refs could’ve ruined the outcome of that game if not for the Giants staying focused… We already knew we would have the momentum against Atlanta at home but they just simply did not show up, so this off season will be a rough one for Atlanta ! I am going crazy waiting for this Superbowl to begin & secure Eli Manning’s Legacy once & for all proving all doubters wrong ! We definitely got 1 thing on our side which is that we are the underdogs once again ??? Many know we should be the favorites but I will always have respect for Tom Brady & the Patriots ! Also, we must give special thanks to the JETS for turning our season around ! I know they are kicking themselves right now having to watch the Giants vs Patriots in this years Superbowl… Rex Ryan has got alot to learn !!! Go Giants !!! WE ARE ALL IN !

That was like a heavy weight fight

two champs trading blows and neither one giving in. The Niners are here, and they’re for REAL. Thanks for making my G-men battle tested. That was a beautiful game defensively. Hopefully, both teams can do it again in the NFC championship game next year.

But really though, the Niners are a very, very good team.
