Ask The Falcoholic Playoff Edition!

Good morning, Giants fans. Congratulations on the #4 seed.

I'm here to answer any questions you may have about the 2011 Atlanta Falcons. It's been kind of a crazy year, as you can see by looking at our last three games. Two blowout wins and a blowout loss made us all a little dizzy.

If you want to know what to expect from guys like Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, Julio Jones and John Abraham, I'll try to answer as best I can. If your only question is how we're going to like a 40 point loss, I can't hear you.

If you wouldn't mind recommending this so it stays near the top of the list, it would be appreciated. Here's to a great game!

Are you confident in your pass rush getting to Eli??

Conversely, how worried are you about our “Release the Krakken” pass rush with JPP, Osi, and Tuck??

by sexyscottish on Jan 2, 2012 10:51 AM EST reply actions

Those are our gravest concerns

I like John Abraham’s chances of getting to Eli, but the rest of the pass rush has been inconsistent at best. They’ll have their work cut out for them.

As far as the pass rush goes, they’re obviously going to be in huge trouble if they’re letting JPP and guys like that into the backfield. I expect they’ll trot out some extra blockers and ask Matt Ryan to make quick reads to try to combat that.

Im guessing your O is more ground and big play type

If you go to quick reads ,that would take away Jones for the most part ,no?

Hello there.

Congrats on that beatdown of the Bucs. I know how satisfying it must feel to torch a division rival like that.

My question is, what is the most susceptible part of your defense? Forgive my ignorance, because I really don’t know too much about the Falcons, but it seems to me that you guys have a very good pass rush keyed by Abraham, and then the other levels of your defense are basically above average, not elite but not bad.

You have Sean Weatherspoon who is having a really good year. Stephen Nicholas looks decent. Brent Grimes having a good year. Thoughts on Dunta? How’s he doing? I do like your safeties, especially William Moore, but I don’t think they are all world…..?

I support the Giants like bras support Kim Kardashian's boobs. It can be a struggle, we've had some jiggles, but we're still firm.

by BigBlueIntervention on Jan 2, 2012 10:58 AM EST reply actions

It's funny that you think that

Abe is so good that he makes it seem like the pass rush must be above average, when in fact it’s not. He’s the lone player having a truly great year there, while everyone else has been pretty middling. Unless your offensive line is struggling, it’ll like be Abe or bust.

The most susceptible part of our defense is the secondary. Dunta’s struggled in the zone scheme he’s asked to work in, and Chris Owens has been below average in the nickel slot. Our safeties can be beat deep, too.

Your best bet is to set up a semblance of the run and just pick on the weakest parts of the secondary over and over again. You want to avoid those linebackers at all costs, because that’s our strongest unit.

gotcha. I suppose that description of your defense is basically an upgraded Dallas defense.

Pass rush basically by one great player, really good LBs, poor secondary. I guess we’ll attack Owens and Dunta, and avoid Grimes for the most part. That’s what we did against Dallas.

We chipped Demarcus Ware over and over again, probably will do the same against Abe. We picked on Terrence Newman, and avoided Mike Jenkins all game.

I support the Giants like bras support Kim Kardashian's boobs. It can be a struggle, we've had some jiggles, but we're still firm.

by BigBlueIntervention on Jan 2, 2012 11:09 AM EST up reply actions

It's a winning strategy for you

The wildcard here is William Moore. He’s not always great in coverage at strong safety, but he can actually rush the passer and has a knack for jumping routes.

definitely saw a lot of good things from him when you guys were playing the Saints.

One more question about the offense. Is there anyway we can stop Roddy White and Julio Jones? Do they fare better against zones, or man coverages? Can they get off press coverage easy? Who is the more dangerous WR in your opinion?

I see Julio going deep more often, but it looks to me like Ryan tries to force the ball more to Roddy when he can.

by BigBlueIntervention on Jan 2, 2012 11:21 AM EST up reply actions

Roddy's pretty proficient in either zone or man

Julio prefers man, I think, because he can straight up torch a dude one-on-one. Julio’s definitely more dangerous because he’s bigger, more physical and faster.

Roddy’s still an integral piece of the offense, though, so you’ll see plenty of both.

Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks

Quality wide receivers have a way of troubling the Falcons. Cruz is particularly scary.

Definitely Osi and (name is escaping me). Basically, anyone who can rush the passer has a chance to be a headache against the Falcons.

straight deep routes. We get burned via safety-corner miscommunication at the very least once a game.

We have the ability to shut down WRs for most of a game, except for a few big plays where they will be wide open.

No doubt this will be a problem. Nobody is mentioning Michael Turner. This is the most balanced offense we’ve faced since facing Dallas 3 weeks ago (when they had Murray) and the Saints. Our defense struggled heavily versus both.

I'd expect it to be a close game

Julio Jones runs one of the prettiest deep routes in the game right now. If you want to see what I mean, check out his two touchdowns against the Buccaneers.

Turner’s a factor, definitely. Ripping off 179 yards has to have given him some confidence.

By the way JJ is a beast.

by Giantstep on Jan 2, 2012 12:52 PM EST reply actions

You can definitely attack the whole line

We’re a little stronger inside than outside, but Will Svitek has played well in pass protection at left tackle. Your best bet is to just push hard and someone will crack. I don’t think they can keep him from getting sacked.

The guy you might not know is Sean Weatherspoon. He’s had a huge year at OLB and he’s provided pressure, made tackles and been a force against the run all year long. Epect to see him after Bradshaw and Jacobs.

Why do you think the Falcons will win next Sunday?

And, in a scenario that I’m sure you don’t want to picture, what would be the reason that the Falcons lose in the 1st round?

I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.

I think their offense is dynamic and they'll force you to be one-dimensional

It’ll be close, but I think a turnover or two will make the difference.

If they lose, it will be because you kill Ryan and slow down Turner. The defense isn’t good enough to save the offense in that case.

Did he have Mike ability’s and was he always well adept at covering the TE’s ?

on a side note : Was kinda wanting Sean Weatherspoon in the 2010 draft ,also glad it didnt happen that way.

He feasts on terrible run defenses

If the line opens up a hole for him, you’re screwed. He’s too fast and powerful in the open field.

You can stymie him by getting a good hit on him at the line of scrimmage. He has a lot of leg drive, but you instantly sap his speed and he has a hard time accelerating again. Just make it your mission to hit him and try to plug as many lanes as possible, because he’s never had elite vision.

Not exceptionally well

I think Brent Grimes has a good shot of at least slowing down Victor Cruz, because he’s one of the better corners in the league. Nobody else matches up particularly well against your weapons.

by Dave Choate on Jan 3, 2012 10:19 AM EST up reply actions

Grimes is your best corner, I believe.

Most teams match up their best corner on Nicks, like last week Dallas had Jenkins on him. We’ll see, I guess.

This is one reason why Cruz has been flourishing. He is a legit #1 facing less than a teams best. It’s a problem for teams to decide how to deploy their defensive resources on these two guys.

Probably not unlike the problem teams have covering Roddy and JJ. My hope, and to a lesser extent my expectation, is that our pass rush will continue to wreak havoc on a passing attack and make our secondary’s job easier. One thing I’m keeping in mind is that the Jets and Dallas’s Olines are not as good as yours.

If so, can you tell me how much Reggie Kelly is making? Or if you think he is making league minimum, after declining to take it from Pittsburgh? Because that is the factor in whether you are getting one or not.

how confident are you that Matt Ryan will lead the offense down the field? I like Matt Ryan but I don’t get the impression that he’s made that step in terms of clutchness? Or am I off base here.

He is considered “above average,” on par with Matt Ryan though some are loathe to bring Ryan down to Eli’s level if you can believe this nonsense.

i think after the top 3 there's a huge debate over the next few guys

and any ordering of them is just opinion…

its Rodgers, Brees, Brady obv in the top three

then Manning, Romo, Rothlisberger, Ryan, Stafford and maybe Rivers in the next group… and I could understand putting those guys in almost any order. Personally I go as follows

1. Rodgers
2. Brees
3. Brady
4. Manning
5. Rothlisberger
6. Romo
7. Ryan
8. Stafford
9. Rivers

Ryan is in NFC Probowl and Eli is out this year lol

by BB1156 on Jan 3, 2012 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

He's gone from overrated to underrated

For the first four years of his career, I thought too much was being made of him as a passer. I saw him as an inaccurate QB who threw too many picks. Given the way he was lauded, I thought he was overrated.

Somehow he’s become incredibly underrated. His last four seasons have been as good as anybody in the NFL, and what he did this year with little to no ground game has impressed the hell out of me. He’s really hit his stride as an NFL passer, and I’d put him juuuust outside of the group that includes Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers. Eli Manning scares me, I’ll admit it.

I’ve learned better than to compare Ryan to other passers given the fights I’ve gotten into with Ravens fans about Ryan/Flacco.

Eli throws a lot of TD's

which is good. He also throws a lot of interceptions. A lot of games I’ve seen him play, he’s made very costly mistakes (Eagles games in the last two years).

I watched most of their superbowl campaign and I thought he got lucky a lot at the time.

He’s good. He’s nearly a tier better than Matt Ryan, because I think he has a much better eye for the big play and he isn’t afraid to take those risks. I think they affect the game in similar fashions though, just drive the ball, keep command of the offense, don’t get sacked, and score touchdowns in the Redzone.

He’s a great quarterback, and I think the G-Men as a team are severely underrated. It’s only been 3 years since they won the Superbowl, yet nobody talks about them like they are a legitimate contender. A lot of your losses this year came from key mistakes late (some on Eli’s part) but I don’t really think you guys got embarassed as often as the Falcons did by good teams.

I don't put much stock in that

Joe Hawley is an expert flopper and Tyson Clabo has always been known as a guy who’s willing to hold and throw a few questionable blocks along the way, so I suspect that’s part of where the reputation comes from. I’ll be the first to criticize them when they’re dirty and they have been at times, but I don’t see anything more egregious than the league average on balance. That’s with homer glasses off.

I think Tuck’s taking that in part from B.J. Raji and Suh, neither of whom should be talking any crap about other players being dirty.

Has Matt Ryan progressed much this year?

He seemed to be cruing towards a level of QBing just below Brady and Brees last year, but the Falcons have regressed this year (at least in record). So I guess my question is really two-fold, how good exactly is Matt Ryan, and what has been the reason for the sharp decline in wins this year from last year?

Natural regression to the mean, recordwise

The Falcons got some lucky breaks last year that weren’t going to be sustainable in 2011. I predicted an 11-5 finish, got flack from some Falcons fans for being pessimistic and wound up being a little too optimistic. They’ve had some injuries, they’ve played some poor games and the offensive line has struggled to stabilize. Those are big factors.

I’d argue that this is one of Ryan’s finest seasons as a pro. When you consider his line allowed way too much pressure—something I know you guys are familiar with from years past—that he was breaking in a rookie receiver and that his ground game was non-existent for a six game stretch, he’s really put the team on his back.

If you look at some of the advanced metrics or ESPN’s weird QBR, he’s about 7th in the NFL after being ranked third a year ago. Sounds about right to me.

Again, I’m not going to get into the Manning/Ryan stuff. I’ve found I can’t possibly have an opinion without getting yelled at by one set of fans or another, so we’ll just go with this: They’re both very, very good.

Do you worry that Matt Ryan has a passer rating of 68.6 against playoff teams this year?

121 for 217 (55% completion percentage), 275.2 yards/game, 6 TDs, 7 INTs against New Orleans (twice), Detroit, Green Bay and Houston.

Also the Falcons were 1-4 in those games. I don’t think he’s a bad QB at all, but obviously he was below-average to average against top competition this year.

by Badshaw44 on Jan 3, 2012 11:21 AM EST reply actions

With the exception of New Orleans...

…every one of those teams can rush the passer. Ryan’s got good pocket presence, but when the line falls apart, he’s a mess.

His best two games by far were against New Orleans, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence. This is what scares me so much about the Giants.

came in He only got sacked 5 times combined in those 5 games though (3 of those Detroit)

I trust your opinion and, admittedly, I haven’t seen much of Ryan besides highlights. Was he just getting pressured out the wazoo in those games and got forced into making mistakes and/or throwing it away? Just trying to get a feel of what his tendencies are when he’s getting pressured.

by Badshaw44 on Jan 3, 2012 11:58 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, the sack totals are low

But yeah, they were getting good pressure. Detroit had three sacks, as you noted, but Green Bay and Houston were in the backfield constantly. Particularly Green Bay, where the line was absolutely awful. If he didn’t have a quick release, those numbers might be even worse.

He was just plain bad in the Houston game, and it’s a little unfair of me to entirely blame that on the pressure. His flaws—overthrowing the ball, getting a little antsy when he can’t find an open man, trying to force a throw to his favorite receivers—sometimes show up in tandem. You can beat him by forcing him to make mistakes, too.

i'm getting mixed signals with the "pass all over them" comment

Cuz I keep hearing how good Brent Grimes has been… I haven’t seen 1 falcons game this year so i’m not injecting my opinion, I’m just confused.

If Grimes really is that good, couldnt he cover a top guy in man, and let the other CB get safety help and take away the next best option leaving TEs, RBs, etc for short gains over the middle. This is basically the Jets philosophy with Revis.

if they can’t do that, there would be 2 main reasons. 1, grimes is a good player, but not good enough to shut down a teams #1. (thats no insult, most corners cant do that, but i’ve read things on the falcoholic where ppl are calling him a top corner in the league). Or 2, the other corners and safeties are sooo bad that they can’t even hold up in double coverage.

by Matt dubs on Jan 3, 2012 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

Grimes is pretty good

Teams just don’t bother throwing at him much anymore. That’s a blessing and a curse, because whoever you put him on is probably going to have a bad day. Unfortunately, the rest of the secondary is exposed in that scenario.

Brian Van Gorder, our defensive coordinator, is a zone guy through and through. That means Grimes won’t be on your best guy 100% of the time, and safeties won’t always be available to help out Dunta Robinson and Dominique Franks. That’s generally bad news.

does Grimes follow receivers around, or just work the outsides?

i ask that because Cruz does alot, if not most of his damage in the slot. if that’s the case, will we see Grimes there with him, or another corner?

Chris Owens

He’s incredibly fast and has good ball skills, but he’s wasted in a zone defense. He doesn’t take great angles to the ball.

Dominique Franks is a promising project. Good young corner with a lot of raw ability and a nose for the ball, but he’s still developing.

Beyond that, it’s UDFA Darrin Walls. Lot of promise there, but he’s barely played in 2011.

He’s stabilized that corner spot, but he really hasn’t been that great and he’s been a lightning rod for controversy the whole time. I’d prefer that by 2013 he was playing the nickel and Franks was playing outside.

It's a concern

Some of these guys play one, maybe two games a season in cold weather. Some have never lived anywhere where the temperature routinely dips below 60 degrees.

I guess we’ll see firsthand on Sunday.

by Dave Choate on Jan 3, 2012 3:36 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, i just always wondered how the dome teams fans feel about this

I have always thought the Saints, Colts, Rams (when they were good), etc looked much less impressive outside of their domes, and I know early in his career Matt Ryan was “unbeatable” in ATL.

As someone who watches every game (and probably follows the Saints closely) do you think the Dome to away conversion really has a large effect on the players or is it mostly narrative by the media to explain a road loss (since most teams are better at home than away anyways)

by Matt dubs on Jan 3, 2012 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

I think it's part of the narrative web ESPN likes to weave

But I also think there’s a grain of truth in it. When you go from an indoor, climate-controlled stadium with friendly fans to an outdoor, cold, loud one where you’re hearing nothing but boos, it can’t be pleasant.

Where do the Falcons practice?

I ask because I’m in Georgia this week, about an hour Northwest of Atlanta and it has been cold as hell. It’s only 35 degrees right now at 4 in the afternoon.

Can MS have your boys practicing outdoors this week in the cold?

Hmm

Most overrated may be either Dunta Robinson (Pro Football Focus has him ranked poorly despite his reputation) or maybe even Michael Turner. He’s still good, but there have been games where he just disappears and he’s arguably no longer the focal point of this offense.

The most underrated is probably Grimes. He’s just starting to get his due as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, which I would argue he is.

by Dave Choate on Jan 3, 2012 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks for answering

as for the Giants the most overrated is Osi. He’s one dimensional and a liability against the run. Teams have exploited his run defense.

We have two underrated players to watch. On offense it’s Ballard. He’s developed into a good pass catching TE. On defense Kenny Philips. He’s arguably the best fundamentally sound player on the Giants. He’s been a target from some Giants fan. However, I don’t believe the Giants scheme has put KP in the best position to shine. That has somewhat changed the last two games.

They have 2nd place schedule and Cowboys have 3rd place one. We will get 1st place and pretty much end up playing the same teams from NFC we did this year (besides the NFC West we all played) : 49ers, Packers and Saints all playoff teams. So Giants will have tough schedule again.

But i have faith in Giants. Many of our IR-ed players will be returning. Our Sts will be better especially the return game and our running game will improve too. Defense is going to be a monster.

It'll be interesting to see what Reese does with Goff, Sintim, TT and Ross

Goff, Sintim and TT all coming off ACL injuries that often take 2 years to fully heal, but they happened early. I think it would be foolish of the Giants to assume next year they’ll all be as productive as before the injury, but they might come cheap as well. Sintim may have lost a roster spot with JWill and Herzlich showing some promise. Between TT and Ross I can’t imagine both come back…

I'm thinking it's possible to bring back Ross and TT

just a matter of “do they want to?” right now.

TT is a lock to come back, probably on a Kiwi-esque two year deal.

Ross, well…it depends on what hes’ going to get in FA. I think the giants will make an offer. If someone wants him more he’ll bounce but i think they will put something on the table. Another thing Bruce Johnson has missed a lot of time, who knows if he’ll ever be back, and if he is, what he’ll be like. I know Tryon shows promise though…but w/ that size, how durable is he?

Goff, well, he hasn’t really proven himself outside of a run stuffer, and w/ his injury i don’t know what anyone else will offer that will be > than what JR offers.

Manningham….he’ll get offers. it’s just up to JR on what he wants to put out there.

I ask b/c I could see Fewell running a lot

of Cover 2…that’s if there are 2 WRs out there.

I could see Boley drawing TG for the most part w/ Rolle and KP playing deep.

but I think you gotta continue to pressure Ryan and really focus on stopping the run and basically letting your DBs and KP stop the pass.

An actual Meme-less question here:

Allow me to throw the memes out of a blimp here for a second:

Is the Falcons’ defense as vanilla as it looks from here?

by Raptor22 on Jan 4, 2012 10:36 AM EST reply actions

It's pretty vanilla

Brian Van Gorder runs a zone so soft you could comfortably fall asleep on it. He’s fond of blitzing four, though sometimes he’ll pull his linemen back into coverage to send a linebacker or defensive back in.

It works reasonably well until the opposing offense gets creative, and then it craters.

Hey Dave

Based on the roster, it looks like your D is more of a speed Defense featuring smaller-than-average players for the most part. Is that an accurate assessment and do you feel that makes you susceptible to a north/south, between the tackles running game?

by TNYFBG on Jan 4, 2012 2:32 PM EST reply actions

You're pretty close

And unsurprisingly, the power run is about the only part of any team’s ground game the Falcons struggle against. They’re excellent in pursuit, so you have to knock them down.

If I were you, I’d pound Jacbos all day long and hope he breaks a couple of long ones. You need to keep them honest, because if they can key on the pass, they’ve got guys back there who can be turnover machines.

Bobby Petrino. Yes. He’s a scum bag. He had a history of being a scum bag before he came to Atlanta, and his decision to quite with four games left in the season did nothing to help that reputation.

To make matters worse, he didn’t even talk to Arthur Blank in person. He left a voice mail. That’s how he quit. Then things started surfacing like how he had a “don’t speak unless spoken to” policy with his players. So yeah, that dude is universally hated by Falcons fans.

But then we brought it Mike Smith. Nobody knew who he was when the Falcons hired him, but he’s made it incredibly easy to get over Petrino and nightmarish state in which he and Vick left our beloved franchise.

This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.

by gilley on Jan 5, 2012 1:07 AM EST up reply actions

If I may continue, that’s something other fans need to realize if they wish to understand what it’s like to be a Falcons fan. Every organization and fan base has their own stuff, but the Falcons were in a horrible place just four years ago. A franchise that had never put together back to back winning seasons had to move on after it’s franchise quarterback got locked up in prison and it’s head coach quit in the middle of the season. We had to clean house a bit, ridding ourselves of guys like Deangelo Hall, but Football Jesus decided to cut us some slack and delivered us Thomas Demitroff, Mike Smith, Matt Ryan and Michael Turner. Before we knew it, we had an eleven win team and were in the playoffs, with a future that looked brighter than ever. Things haven’t been ideal since then, but we’re in pretty good shape right now. So it doesn’t hurt so much when Bobby Petrino is mentioned, even if it does incite all sorts of emotions that might lead one to making an extremely long-winded comment on an opposing team’s blog.

This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.

by gilley on Jan 5, 2012 1:12 AM EST up reply actions

LOL to the long winded comment.

What a turn around is the moral of the story. I love the league, and the Bobby Petrino chapter is a strange chapter to the larger story that is the NFL. It really is quite amazing that you are actually now in better shape than at anytime in your franchises history.

Kudos to Arthur Blank for bringing in Dimitroff or did someone else suggest that hire?

It depends on who you ask. It’s hard for me to say because I have avoided the topic at all costs for the past five years. I hate talking to people about it, because there are such strong emotions, and inevitably race is always brought into the discussion. I would guess that the vast majority of Falcons fans do not have any sort of affection for Michael Vick, but I’m just guessing. Of course, like I said, race is always going to be a part of that discussion, and Atlanta has the largest African-American population in the country if I’m not mistaken. It’s hard to deny that there’s a correlation between one’s feelings toward Michael Vick and one’s race.

For me, personally, I’ll never forget how much fun it was to have him as the Falcons quarterback. I’ve always felt that with the right coaches he could flourish as a passer. He’s the most talented athlete I’ve ever watched, in my opinion. I don’t hate him. Obviously, what he did was horrible. You can’t overstate how terrible his actions were. I’m the forgiving type, though, and he did his time.

Regardless, the thing I learned from the Michael Vick fiasco was to always remember to distinguish between the athlete and the person. It’s great when an athlete you admire also seems to have a personality you could really look up to or get along with. Still, these are real people and there’s really no way of knowing their true character just by watching them play a game and handle questions from the media. You can admire how they carry themselves or you can feel the opposite way about them, but there’s really no way to know what kind of person they truly are.

Michael Vick did more for the Falcons’ franchise than most fans of other teams will ever realize. For that reason, and because I absolutely loved watching him play, I’ll never regret that he began his career as a Falcon.

This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.

by The Cole Train on Jan 5, 2012 12:16 PM EST up reply actions

I take Ryan

Vick is what he is at this point: A dynamic quarterback who can scramble, but still has never fully mastered the nuances of pocket passing and has never really become as accurate as he could.

Last year looked like a giant step forward, but I think when you look at the rest of his career, it stands out more as a fluke. He’s still got time to change that, but that’s my perception.

Mike Vick is infuriating to root for

Matt Ryan has been better than Vick ever was in a Falcons uni. No, there aren’t as many highlights, but the team and the QB position is solidified in a way it never was with Vick.

by KMarch on Jan 5, 2012 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

Matt Ryan hands down

Yea Vick is an incredible athlete, but Matt Ryan has given us four straight winning season (big deal for us when we never had two straight years of winning seasons), Matty is a true leader of this team and has that quiet confidence that his teammates recognize and admire. Vick never had that.

He was a immature and never worked all that hard when he was on the Falcons (and as a fan of football, that is inexcusable (the dog thing was horrendous, but I’m just talking about the football part)). Most true Falcon fans will pick Ryan because he seems to have the smarts and talent to get us a ring. As Giants fans, you guys know how Eli struggled early in the playoffs, but that changed for the better pretty quickly!

He's a great tackler

Saints tried to pick on that first game back from the knee surgery, and it was one of the rare things about the Saints offense that failed that day. Passes underneath and force Grimes to tackle was clearly in the gameplan, and Grimes stepped up. That said, he’s still only a 5’8’/5’9 guy, so some of your bigger receivers or either of your backs could truck him once if they wanted to.

No doubt.

That height listing is generous. My prediction for why he gets thrown at more often than he should is his size. It might also have something to do with teams thinking too highly of Dunta Robinson, but I’m not sure. Anyway, his leaping ability is so great that his size isn’t much of a problem, though Drew Brees proved a few weeks ago that if you try to throw enough jump balls at him in a game, you’ll eventually be able to get one past him.

Don't know if it's been asked

But how on board were Atlanta fans with the trade the brought Julio Jones to Atlanta?

Sure, he’s looked as though he could develop into one of the game’s top wide receivers, but that’s it, he’s a wide receiver, and it seems a steep price to pay for him (if I’m not mistaken, nearly on par with what the Giants put up for Eli in 2004).

Is this a move that will prove to be worth it over time? Or is this one that is going to receive heavy criticism regardless of whether or not he turns into a top WR?

Most fans seems to acknowledge that the jury is still out. We have to wait to see what this team does before saying whether it was a good trade or not. At the time the trade was made, I’d say there was a split reaction among Falcons fans.

Personally, I’m happy with the trade. Julio’s going to be elite. I don’t feel like one can definitively say that the value of the picks we gave up will or won’t be worth more than the value of having Julio Jones on our roster.

Bottom Line: If the Falcons contend for Super Bowls, it will be viewed as a slam dunk. If they don’t, the trade will be heavily criticized. I feel like this regime is going to bring Atlanta it’s first Super Bowl trophy, and when that happens the trade will be praised almost universally.

It was met with fairly mixed reviews initially

but as of now people are definitely coming around to it. The jury is still out in terms of how it will impact our team in future drafts, and there’s a slight chance he may of peaked this year, but his numbers this year have most people on board. Especially considering he missed 3 games, his numbers put people mostly onside I feel.
