NFC Championship Game: New York Giants Vs. San Francisco 49ers - Scouting Report

Sunday, January 22, 2012 marks the 42nd NFC Championship Game. It will be the fifth time that the New York Giants have made an appearance. They have never lost in this round of the playoffs and have split the games equally on the road and at home.

The San Francisco 49ers have made the second-most appearances in the Championship game, thirteen to be exact. Their record in this round is 5-7. Their W/L percentage is .500 at home (4-4). The Niners have lost their last four out of five games in this round.

It was 1991 when last these two teams met in the NFC title game. Joe Montana was throwing for the 49ers. Jeff Hostetler was filling in, quite well, for an injured Phil Simms. The Giants came out on top, 15-13. Now, these two teams will square off for the second time this season in, what is beginning to look like, another "Cinderella" story for the Big Blue Wrecking Crew.

Position-By-Position Breakdowns
-- The Offenses
-- The Defenses
-- The Special Teams

Who are the San Francisco 49ers?

They are a team who finished with the third-best record in the regular season, 13-3. They are a team who were one game out of last place in 2010. Sadly enough, they were also one game out of first, housed in a division that could have used a shot of Viagra. They are a team that defeated the Giants earlier in the year. That loss initiated a four game losing streak for Big Blue. They are also a team that has one of the top five defenses in the league and aim to shut down a ridiculously talented New York aerial attack.

Who are the New York Giants?

If you haven't heard by now, these are the same guys who sent the "best football team in history" to bed without any supper. Last week, the Giants bested the best in Lambeau Field, a place that is not easy to win at. They are currently on a four-game winning streak. So are the 49ers, with a week off in between, of course. One of these team's streaks will come to an end this Sunday. One team's journey will continue. Who will be crowned the NFC Champions this Sunday in San Francisco?

Star-divide

Passing:

Alex Smith is not one of the flashier quarterbacks this season. He did not throw for a gazillion yards. He hasn't thrown many touchdowns. He is not even in the top ten. In fact, he was the most sacked quarterback in the league. What he did do is throw the least amount of interceptions this year (5) and make the plays he needed to make that allowed his team to clinch a Bye week in the playoffs and their division.

Sack - 44

Alex Smith is ranked No. 19 in the league (PASSING YARDS).

His postseason QB Rating is 103.2 (1 game)

Eli Manning has officially finished his training at the Shaolin Temple and has earned his "elite" status. He is averaging 303.5 yards per game in the postseason. That is a nice number but his regular season average is even better. There is no question that this kid will finish his career in New York and his jersey number will be retired.

YDS - 4,933

Comp % - 61.0

Yds/CMP - 8.4

INT - 16

Sack - 28

QB Rating - 92.9

Eli Manning is ranked No. 4 in the league (PASSING YARDS).

His postseason QB Rating is 121.8 (2 games).

Rushing:

Frank Gore finished the year out with 1,211 rushing yards, sixth-most in the NFL. He also got off to a bang-up start last week. He was the league's second-leading rusher with eighty-nine yards. This is where the Niners are most dangerous in their offensive scheme.

San Francisco's running game is ranked 8th in regular season play.

They are ranked 5th in the postseason (1 game).

It was a rough season for the Giants rushing game. The tandem of Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw collectively ran for 1,230 yards, just nineteen yards more than Frank Gore. These are small numbers considering that Jacobs and Bradshaw ran for over 2,000 yards last season. Yet, they have picked things up a bit towards the end of the regular season and in the playoffs.

New York's running game is ranked 32nd in regular season play.

They are ranked 7th in the postseason (2 games).

Receiving:

Michael Crabtree led the Niners in reception yards (874) during the regular season. He recorded four touchdowns to boot. Vernon Davis came in second, with 792 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Last week, in the Divisional game, Davis led the league with 180 receiving yards. Those are big numbers when you factor in that he only had seven receptions.

The 49ers are ranked 30th in receiving yards (regular season).

They are ranked 5th in the postseason (1 game).

Victor Cruz was somewhat limited in his play last week. But "limited", as it pertains to Cruz, is not exactly a text book definition of the word. He had seventy-four receiving yards on five receptions. Opposing defenses have figured out that it would be a good idea to double and triple team him. That sort of scheming is not what one would call conducive to shutting down the Giants' offense. Hakeem Nicks is as equal a threat as Cruz is. Nicks has 280 receiving yards this postseason and has the most touchdowns, four. Also coming up big is Mario Manningham, Travis Beckum, Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs. This receiving corps is very hard to successfully scheme against.

The Giants are ranked 5th in receiving yards (regular season).

They are ranked 2nd in the postseason (2 games).

Offensive Line:

The Frisco offensive line was able to punch holes in opposing defensive lines to get their running game going. Yet, they were not strong enough to protect Alex Smith throughout the year. Smith was the most sacked quarterback in the NFL. The way the Giants front four have been playing, this group is in for a long day.

San Francisco's Offensive Line is ranked No. 26 (regular season).

They are ranked No. 7 in the postseason (1 game).

The Giants' O-line have been quietly doing well all season long, statistically speaking. They gave up the fifth-least amount of quarterback sacks and the twelfth-least amount of quarterback hits. The running game wasn't prevalent this season. The jury is still out on if they should bear the brunt of the blame.

New York's Offensive Line is ranked No. 7 (regular season).

They are ranked No. 4 in the postseason (2 games).

The 49ers are ranked 26th in TOTAL OFFENSE (regular season).

They are ranked 5th in the postseason (1 game).

The Giants are ranked 8th in TOTAL OFFENSE (regular season).

They are ranked 3rd in the postseason (2 games).

Linebackers:

Frisco's NaVorro Bowman had the seventh most combined tackles (143) out of all the linebackers in the NFL during the regular season. Patrick Willis came in second on the team with ninety-seven combined tackles. Each had two sacks. But the real talent of this backer crew is, first-round Draft pick, Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks. Smith finished the year with fourteen sacks. Brooks with seven. The Giants O-line will have their hands full, as the Niners will undoubtedly be bringing the pressure.

The 49ers have the No. 1 ranked rush defense (regular season).

They are ranked No. 1 in the postseason (1 game).

They may have had their struggles earlier in the year. But they have it all together now. Michael Boley, who only had one sack during the regular season, put Aaron Rodgers on the ground twice last week. He ranks third in postseason tackles (14). Chase Blackburn comes in with thirteen tackles and a fumble recovery. Mathias Kiwanuka and Jacquain Williams also have been looking sharp .

The Giants have the 19th ranked rush defense (regular season).

They have the 5th ranked rush defense in the postseason (2 games).

Defensive Line:

The stand-out player on the Niners D-line is Justin Smith. He finished the year with 58 tackles, 7.5 sacks and three forced fumbles. Ray McDonald put together 5.5 sacks, two pass deflections and two forced fumbles on the year. Aside from one sack in the postseason, this front three have been neutralized.

Easily the strongest and scariest part of this Giants defense. Jason Pierre-Paul was the leading tackler of all defensive lineman in the NFL. JPP also had the fourth-most sacks in the league. He is second in postseason tackles. In the postseason, they have been equally beastly. Osi Umenyiora has 3.0 sacks, a half sack out of the lead. Rocky Bernard has one postseason sack. Linval Joseph, Chris Canty and Justin Tuck have all amped up their play as well. The Frisco O-line will be feeling the effects of this game for weeks to come.

Secondary:

If you are looking for a vulnerability on this 49ers team, you've found it. The run defense for San Fran has been so good this past year that it escalated them up the stats ladder. Defending the pass is definitely not their forte. Last week they gave up 435 yards and four touchdowns. You can almost hear the crowd chanting now, "CRUUUUUZZZZZZ!"

San Francisco's pass defense is ranked 16th.

They are ranked 11th in the postseason (1 game).

The Giants just took on two of the most potent offenses in the NFL. To break it down a touch further, they just played the Green Bay Packers. This secondary, who had its toils throughout the season, seems to have finally found the wining formula. In the last two postseason games, they have only given up 212 yards per game. Those are pretty good numbers, considering the two teams that they just contained. This is a rejuvenated secondary who are doing it all.

New York's pass defense is ranked 29th (regular season).

They are ranked 5th in the postseason (2 games).

Special Teams:

This is one of the strongest branches of this 49ers team. David Akers is in his thirteenth season and is one of the most accurate kickers in the NFL. Akers made seven 50+ yard field goals this season and was the league's leading kicker. Keep in mind, the more field goals a team has made, the less trips to the end zone did they take. Andy Lee was one of the better punters this year. His 50.9 average led the league. Their return game is nothing to sneeze at. Ted Ginn returned a kickoff for 102 yards earlier in the year. Ginn had 800 kick return yards and 466 punt return yards, including a 55 yard touchdown return.

The Giants weren't overly impressive on Special Teams during the regular season. That trend is continuing, somewhat, in the postseason. Lawrence Tynes is tied for first with four field goals. They don't rank very high in the punting area. That is because they have not had to punt the ball much. Steve Weatherford has only had to punt six times in the last two games. That, in and of itself, tells that tale of this Giants offense.

The San Francisco 49ers total defense is ranked 4th (regular season).

They are ranked 11th in the postseason (1 game).

The New York Giants total defense is ranked 27th (regular season).

They are ranked 4th in the postseason (2 games).

Jim Harbaugh may win coach of the year. He has earned, at the very least, a nomination for how he has turned this 49er team around. Many analysts consider San Francisco to be the most complete team in the playoffs. When you consider that they gave up over four-hundred yards of offense last week, it really does alter that perception.

While their regular season doesn't indicate this, the New York Giants seem to be playing the most well-rounded football this postseason and this is exactly when you want your team's pilot light on high. The Giants are definitely heating things up and doing the impossible once again. They are just one win away from the big game. Can they finish?

SF is a good team, but match up wise Giants are better! Both teams are coming off of emotional wins. The Giants to me(biased of course) have been playing with more emotion for a longer period of time. The last five games have been awesome.

We definitely have more Playoff Experience. keep the game close and let Eli do what Eli do in the 4th. who do you think is feeling more pressure in this game? Which QB is more likely to crumble under the pressure? HMMMMMMMMMMMM. I’m taking Easy E $10000 Alex.

how did your team do against the saints? i do respect your squad, but both teams were rooting for the other to win... we didn't wanna go to lambeau and likewise you guys didn't wanna go to the superdome...

i will argue that we had games that were of playoff intensity (likewise with the saints) because we were fighting for the number 2 spot while the packers were sleep waliking to end the season… gonna be a great game good luck, but not too much lol…

If Cruz having just seventy-four receiving yards on five receptions is a limited day

Most of which were for 1st downs, I’ll have no problem seeing him “limited”

coaching coaching coaching

Harbaugh will definitely have some tricks up his sleeve

Fewell gotta be disciplined and frustrate the newbie.

let Webster take Crabtree, double down on Davis and just stack the box and take away the running game.

I’m not discrespecting Smith either….this is always my approach.

Harbaugh saw all that running Rodgers did and he will IMO allow Smith to make some plays with his feet as well. but we can counter that by just thinking “stop the run” first IMO….or at least limit it.

Davis

The Giants have done well taking the TE out of the game lately. If they take away Vernon, then stuff the box to stop Gore the 9ers will have alot of trouble scoring points.

We were talking about that, Harbaugh using some trickery to start the game, or if when a drive stalls near the 30 yard line he will use some sort of trickery with Ginn or Williams

Eli Manning has officially finished his training at the Shaolin Temple

That scouting report on the pass defense is a bit off.

Carlos Rogers has been saving the Niners’ bacon all season. We test him at our peril. Not saying he can’t be beat, but he’s been coming up big for them, often.

We have more offensive weapons than they do. That’s our advantage.
David Akers v. Lawrence-Effing-Tynes is theirs.

Everything else is about even. But we best not sleep on their DBs. They don’t suck.
The Saints made a lot of defensive backfields look bad, particularly ours.

by HughG16 on Jan 18, 2012 1:28 PM EST reply actions

I read yesterday that the secondary is coached to make atleast one" dominating" play during the game.

Which is to give a crushing blow to an offensive player. They are saying they are not trying to hurt anyone but they knocked out the Saints running back out of the game

by rbman3 on Jan 18, 2012 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

Andy Lee is their weapon

He is able to prevent the G-men from getting a short field unless we get a turnover in their end. His net may be 50 yards, but he seems to kick it like 70 every time no matter where he is.

Happens all the time with our offense.

Cruz makes tacklers collide into each other and Nicks turns and makes the tackler fall. Next thing you see is our WR running with the ball 60 some yards or a TD.

Eli having one of the best years ever

No one is talking about this, but Eli is having the best year for a qb that I’ve ever seen. Look at the other teams that played last weekend. They’ve all had mostly the same players on offense for years, with a new face here or there.
This is a new O-line, a new WR, new TE, and they’ve had a bunch of injuried to different guys at different times. The Giants have had their team at full strength for only a handfull of games. I can’t believe no one is talking about it. Brees, Rodgers, Flacco, Smith, even Brady have had the same or similar supporting cast for years.

Eli should be the MVP.

Once the giants got their people healthy it was gonna be hell. It’s funny how we never were all in (pun intended) until we played atl and beat dog shi* from them. And to put cherries on top, 37-6 was the score. Eli, score 49 on em!

watched SF-NO last night on NFL

impressions:

all in all, SF is just not that impressive on O. yes, Smith threw some beautiful balls to Davis, and Davis is a stud. But wideouts…not so much.

Gore is a great back. have to limit him.

SF almost lost that game despite NO turning the ball over, what, five times? With that many TO’s, the game shouldn’t have been close.

Bottom line: If our O plays as it has through most of the year (i.e., we try repeatedly to run, without much success, and Eli hits some big plays and makes 0-1 mistakes), and our D doesn’t experience the blown coverages we had in game 1, we’ll be in very good shape.

not at all stats are a good tool to help evaluate but stats can be deceiving

and going with all emotion and no stats can lead you down a misunderstanding of what your are seeing using both wut u see and applying the stats show us that our dline was NOT the problem with our defense it was more the back 4 / read zone scheme

your cherry picking the stats that you like

e.g pass rush and run defense in 2nd half

you wants some stats

defense (over the course of the ENTIRE 2011 season)
total yds/g – 27th
passing yds/g -29th
rushing yds/g -19th

does this make you happy?

The ultimate football chicken & egg argument:
What came first? The great talent or the great scheme?

by rcnt123 on Jan 18, 2012 5:38 PM EST up reply actions

I think it's valid to cherry pick in the sense

that the Giants have had the most missed games from starters, they were able to hang in there well enough with the depth and have been dominating when they got healthy.

I mean if you want to line up on the other side of the Giants d-line right now and call them the worst, be my guest.

by TempusSpatium on Jan 18, 2012 5:49 PM EST up reply actions

again i never said anythign about run defense the line for the most part of the year played outstanding more so in other games then some but

i have never said they were bad one part of the year or not i dont put any of our D struggles on the Dline i never have

by GoodKarme on Jan 18, 2012 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

Those stats are team stats not DL stats, and I tend to ignore yds/ game almost entirely

Take the NO-SF game as an example. SF had awful defensive stats, they were really rank. But they were also meaningless. They created turnovers that neutralized much of the yardage the Saints gained.

Usually the ability to generate TOs or protect the ball changes widely in the playoffs, as the caliber of opponents and intensity of the games is almost nothing like the regular season.

I referred to 2nd half improvement, because I focus on trends. They are fair more useful when trying to predict something.

But at least I understand why you think they were so bad. But I don’t hunk either of us believe that what happened in week 1 had any impact on week 8.

Eli is our King!

by trueblue63 on Jan 18, 2012 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

It wasn't just the Saints

We are fairly middle of the pack when it comes to giving up yards. We give up yards to all the good QBs (even some bad ones).

But still posted 14 ppg for the regular season, that is why yards don’t always mean much. Make people kick FGs and get turnovers.

Attack this day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. ~ Jack Harbaugh

JPP has more combined tackles, more solo tackles, more assists, more safeties and more sacks than Smith.

The only thing Smith has over JPP is forced fumbles.
So, yeah…that CLEARLY distinguishes JPP as having the better season.

Yes lets look at individual stats to determine how good a player is

Romo’s one of the best QBs ever. 3-4 DEs and 4-3 DEs are totally different positions, theyre pretty much incomparable, if you want to compare JPP to someone, compare him to their OLBs. If you want to compare Justin Smith to someone, compare him to our DTs, and even then, its not really the same

Eli Manning is the opposite of Lebron James. If you ask Lebron for change for a dollar, he only gives you 75c because he doesnt have a fourth quarter. When Eli asks for change, he only takes one quarter because thats all he's gonna need

9ers are much more physical than we are. I watched replay of their game carefully last night and they dont only hit you hard, they try to intimidate you physically. They did that to New Orl and they will try to do it to us. I fear that our O-Line wont be able to hold up, esp our tackles. Only solution I see is Eli must take short drops and get rid of the ball very quickly. And our receivers better be ready to take some vicious shots.

Easy

Our OL is pretty physical and so is the DL, I think that our physical style is masked by TCs demand that we be very disciplined. You’ll never see us gunning for big hits, TC clearly prefers strong rom tackling,

The niners had fewer missed tackles than any other team in the league...

And we still hit really hard… You can afford to really crack someone if you use your shoulders and wrap up at the same time…

We may or may not hurt your players...

We have knocked out 6 running backs this season… Not relevant though…

But we can certainly win this game with Eli Manning playing the whole game… We already did it once, that’s proof of concept…

by Takeo33 on Jan 19, 2012 5:55 AM EST up reply actions

We may or may not hurt your players

People are unduly influenced by media coverage. Anyone thinks a NY Giant team, run by Jerry Reese and Tom Coughlin will be soft, that’s hysterical. Last year we knocked out 6 QBs and now our pass rush is better. I don’t expect anyone to get hurt or knocked out on either side.

But, big hits definitely can lead to big plays. It’s not as simple as wrapping up. If the WR makes one quick move, the shoulder misses, and it becomes an arm tackle. Cruz and Nicks can break any arm tackle (can not will). Then it’s a big play. Everything has risk/reward.

Eli is our King!

Well I've seen a slew of 60+ yd pass plays because other teams have tried to hit our WRs

Perhaps our guys are tougher than you think, they just are more disciplined.

I saw Whitner try to gift wrap the game for the saints trying to make big hits. Graham’s TD and the one before it. I hope the trend continues.

Whitner went for the ball on the Graham(a bad decision)

I think the All Pro people figured they’re running a 4-3 D….and that’s why he made ALL PRO at DT. If it was a 3-4, he’d be an ALL PRO DE.

and remember all that jazz the announcers were talking during the NO games? they said no one could get to Brees w/ those three interior Linemen and the hellp they give the tackles.

S.F. sacks Brees 3 times and hit him 11 times.

I think they said Aldon and Justin accounted for 9 of those QB hits.

3-4 DEs just aren’t going to get the stats.

Easy

By comparing stats to others in the same position. And by vote of experts (that is all-pro more important then pro-bowl etc..).

It is about the continuous level of dominance at a particular position.

I have seen the guy play this year....

..and as I have mentioned many times here, he is a good player.
But this is beginning to border on the ridiculous side.
Now you’re saying in order to be considered the best at a certain position you have to have multiple years in the league?
The “best” varies from year to year, week to week, game to game.

Who would you say is the best QB of 2011-2012?
There is a debate that can not be answered with any degree of definitiveness.

AND if we’re going to compare Smith to another 4-3 DE…then Calais Campbell had a better year.

You say tomato. I say ketchup.

by Sean Kerr on Jan 18, 2012 4:52 PM EST up reply actions

stafford had more yards than Eli

Romo had a better completion %

they both had a better QB Rating than Eli.

if we’re just looking at a stat sheet, Stafford and Romo had better years than Eli

but i agree, it’s over kill at this point.

and I’m not saying Smith > JPP….but at the same time I’m not saying JPP > Smith either.

http://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2012/01/05/2011-pff-defensive-player-of-the-year/

1. Justin Smith, DE, San Francisco 49ers

So what do we expect from the best defensive player in the NFL? Well first we want to see them on the field; situational players aren’t going to cut it for this award. For any position, never mind a 3-4 end, Smith’s 91.1% of all snaps ticks that box. Next, not only do we want them to be productive, we want them to dominate their position and being a full 14 grading points above the next player is exactly the type of supremacy we need. Thirdly we require balance – it’s all very well being some highly touted pass rusher, logging statistics that are easy to hype, but taking no responsibility as a run defender and rushing into the backfield on every play, like a headless chicken, doesn’t cut it with us. Smith shows that all-round ability by ranking first in our ratings as a pass rusher and fourth versus the run. That’s not to say we don’t like numbers; we love them, but in context and spouting subsets of pass rush data such as sacks is about as facile as it comes in our book. How about this instead; Smith generated 69 quarterback disruptions this year which ranks him joint fourth, not just among 3-4 ends, where he had 15 more than the next guy, but among every position. For someone playing over a guard most of the time that is remarkable. If that isn’t enough, lastly we want game changing plays. We won’t list them all but how about a 285lb player chasing 17 yards back downfield to force a fumble from Jeremy Maclin and preserve a one point lead with 2:06 left in the game?

This obviously isn’t the end all be all and isn’t the authority on anything, but it is of note.

Ray McDonald and Isaac Sopoaga aren’t as hyped as Tuck and Osi, but they’re beasts as well, especially against the run. Furthermore, our defense is not built on our DL but on our linebackers, and please don’t try to argue that your linebackers are as good as ours.

Well

When someone tries to argue one of his points or opinions the only thing he says is “(player name), by NFL stats, is the best in the league.” He doesn’t specify what that stat is nor does he accept any other way of judging someone.

His argument is
The #1 DL, according to NFL stats, is JPP.

First, he never specified what stat that is, I assume it’s sacks. But what I’m saying is that you can’t judge someone solely on stats. As for me saying he’s a troll, well maybe not exactly a troll but he keeps repeating the same thing over and over.

Sounds like a hypothetical to me. Since you can’t prove they would be able to, and I can’t prove they wouldn’t, I don’t really see the point?
You would have to give them the same odds though. You will need them to be missing all three of their starting defensive lineman, and 6 or 8 (depending on if you count the two pickups they made a couple days before the game that couldn’t get in) of their defensive backs, and whoever their best pass rusher is.

The passing game will need open the running game

The O-line is fine with pass protection and Eli moving in the pocket to buy the extra second or so but we need some over the middle stuff to get the LB’s backing up in coverage to open the running lanes. The play selection in the first couple of drives will be interesting to watch.

I got a GIF for that!

by Fester McDougal on Jan 18, 2012 4:20 PM EST up reply actions

Well our guys on the O-line need to stay square. Don't give them any angles..

We’re going to need Bear and hyzinksi back there as insurance to protect Eli…If the field is really bad..Our receivers have to run intermediate routes just past their LBs and then make their DBs miss and slip..The receivers have the advantage and ours are pretty damn good at YAC…e.g. what Cruz did to the Jets..It was lousy weather we won the weather battle..
Our defense needs to make Alex Smith very uncomfortable, let’s face it he’s young and we have the defense that can keep him rattled the whole game..I really want to flush him out he won’t fair well due to the slippery field..We did that to Rodgers..We need to obviously not make many mistakes and win the turnover battle like we did last week…Stop Gore..we’ve stopped top runners mostly all season, so let’s not stop now..
Our special teams need to cover like they have been lately…Need to avoid field goal attempts …I’m not worried about punts, but I’d prefer we didn’t need many..both teams probably know that..On kickoffs..if there isn’t a lane, then take a knee and start from the 20 yard line…Eli will take his shots downfield when he sees them..
Like I said I see us winning 24-10..They can boast all they want..They are no match for us..We’ve whooped every team that beat us during the regular season. This will be no different..They aren’t facing the same team this time around..

Does Eli have better pocket presence than Brees?

Eli likes to move up in the pocket, as Brees does. 9ers took that away from Brees much of the game. Reason 9ers allowed 15 pts to Saints in final minutes was they got caught trying to defend their receivers, which gave Brees more time and space.

Osi, Tuck and Boley played.

But the Osi, Tuck and Boley that played were not the same guys who are playing in the postseason.
I don’t think Rocky Bernard played. Blackburn wasn’t around.
The guys who did play are playing an entirely different caliber of football right now.

crazy stat:

The giants have beaten the jets, cowboys, falcons, and pack by a combined score of 121-50. Pretty impressive. That being said, the niners have never been blown out this year. They are exceptionally good at keeping games close. Still, I think if the giants get a few touchdowns in the first half, it will be tough for the niners to come back and the giants could win going away. It’s kind of interesting how the pattern of those games has almost all been identical – Giants get a big-play touchdown or two in the first half from Nicks or Cruz, and lead at halftime by a score. The offense doesn’t get much going in the 3rd quarter, but the defense stands strong. In the fourth, the offense comes to life and puts the game away. Hopefully we see it again.

Go Giants!

Please stop saying Frisco

Hey – I am born and raised in NY, loved the Giants since the days of Fran the Scram, through Norm Snead, Randy Johnson, etc.

But, I do live in the SF bay area, and I cringe every time I read “Frisco” – are you trying to inflame 9er fans? The only people who say “Frisco” live in Los Angeles – Imagine if Philadelphia or Boston had a term that they used to describe NY (OK, philly probably does but you would ban me if I used it)

So, San Fran, SF, or 9er is OK , but PLEASE, no more Frisco

Ha ha, you Giants fans are really drinking the Kool-Aid

Yes you guys beat the Pack and I thank you for that (!), but that Packers team was ice-cold and out of sync and their starters hadn’t played for what, like three weeks? It is no wonder they were dropping passes and blowing coverages and such. Don’t let this go to your heads though.

So tell me again, if you guys are so great how was it that you lost to Rex Grossman 23-10???

You were a 9-7 team for a reason (9-7!!) and barely squeaked into the playoffs, and I think we can agree there is no way the Giants would have beaten the Saints as they were the hottest offense in the league before getting beat in SF. The Aints scored 40+ in each of their last four games before their season ended at the hands of the team you’ll be facing and you’re not nervous yet? You should be.

I love how you all are extrapolating from your recent victories as good fans do (never let the facts interfere with a good vibe), but just know you’ll get your reality check this weekend.

Looking forward to a spirited game, and I hope in two weeks you root for the NFC champion 49ers in the Super Bowl. Cheers!

except for the fact that no one has bothered to address the facts.

Do you guys really think GB was a hot team when you played them? During the regular season they were great….you have to admit they seemed a lot different right from the get-go and I’m not sure it was all b/c of the Giants.

Do you really think the Giants could have hung with Drew Brees and that monstrous Saints offense? I think the Niners did great as 14 of the Saints points came on secondary defenders slipping and falling. Doubt that happens again…Sproles and Graham are very difficult to tackle.

I’ll say it again, you guys lost to Rex Grossman? How???

Ok, I’ll stop pointing out stuff that you guys don’t like. Looking forward to Sunday.

by BB1156 on Jan 18, 2012 9:15 PM EST up reply actions

Facts:

GB was 15-1. I don’t care how “hot” you are, a win over them was as impressive as a win over the Saints. And you guys barely beat the Saints, while we demolished the Packers.

We lost to Rex Grossman…whoop-de-doo. You guys lost to a Dallas Cowboys team that was led by Tony Romo with broken ribs. We swept the aforementioned Cowboys. You also lost to an Arizona team led by Kevin Klob…or was it John Skelton?

And you point out that 14 points came from secondary defenders slipping and falling, but don’t mention that 14 points in the Packers game came from the refs. Should have been 37-6. And its going to be raining on Sunday, what makes you think you won’t be slipping and falling again?

I’m concerned for you, because there is a very good chance that we can beat your team, and if we do, you will be severely butthurt.

I imagine their fans were just as bad as the Saints last week. They figured they’d drop 45 and be off to Lambeau (a miscalculation on two counts!). Obviously fans are going to be confident in their team winning, but it was the idea that it wouldn’t even be a game that got to most of us. More than one of them came over after the game to apologize for completely disrespecting our defense.

I missed the Justin Smith debate.

Stats don’t show the sheer level of dominance this dude had. You might as well credit more than half of Aldon Smith’s sacks to him. He’s come up clutch time and time again. JPP is not, at this point, a better player than Smith. He’s extremely close. If Smith is a 99, JPP is a 97. Difference is, Smith is a vet, and JPP is still very much wet behind the ears.

I’m glad there were at least a couple of you that recognize all that Justin Smith is. It has nothing to do with insulting the Giants line at all, they are very very good, just not quite as complete as Smith is.

Funny thing is I think you're right

He’s not LT, but some stuff is eerily similar. They seem to have that will power ability, like that FG in Dallas, etc. Nothing he does surprises me anymore. Its like if he thinks it he can do it.

haha

I pointed out how you wanted Smith for your Pro Bowl team @ DE.

I questioned it only b/c I don’t think he’s the ideal 4-3 DE.

but 4-3 DT or 3-4 DE…um, yeah. You want him on your team…and that’s putting it mildly. but i’m sure plenty of teams would be happy with him as a 4-3 DE too.

but yeah, doesn’t matter who or how…he needs to be on there.

Give Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell a lot of credit. His unit gave up only 34 offensive points in the last three games against the Cowboys, Falcons and Packers. Those are the NFL’s 11th, 10th and third-ranked offenses, respectively.

But the Niners will hang 50 on them because it may be raining.

And wow the saints handed te niners the ball 5 times 3 i believe were in the green zone and they got 13 pts off that wow. News flash niner fans rain or shine the Gmen aint handing you a football game in fact theyll leave the niner fans prayin for that “peyton” trade. Cant wait like Rolle said niners you got your wish but sunday after 60 mins against the gmen you wish you guys would have benn in gb. Lets doo work Gmen and take back the nfc.

Yea

I mean its one thing to come on here and talk about you team but to say that gb beat themselves and the niners are the best team in the nfl now is just ridiculous. Not one of us arr saying we went 15-1 in regular season but like 07 our gmen and last years gb team proves that its all about getting hott at the right time. And were clearly beating the teams werw playing lately along with the refs. Im just waiting to see what he has to say after sundays game. Im taking a guess most niner fans wont have anything to say who knows maybe theyll blame it on the weather.

Why is it so many 49ers fans from Niners Nation spend so much time trying to convince everyone how great your team is? What do you gain from it? Who cares? We’ll find out on Sunday right? I’ve seen talks between your fan base and about 7 opponents fan bases this season, and every one was full of you guys just coming and and trying your best to convince everyone how amazing your team is, how amazing all your players are etc. Why?

Actually..

..the law of averages puts the Giants in the winner’s circle for this game.
The niners beat us earlier this year.
So did the packers.
The Giants know how to play SF, as they almost had them beat.
No one can deny that the Giants have become a different team than they were back in Week 10.
I know niners fan would like to think they have this game in the bag.
…and I hope the niners themselves make the same mistake.
