2012 NFL Mock Draft: Offensive Line, Linebacker For Giants

We have other things to worry about aside from the upcoming 2012 NFL Draft, but Mock Draft Season is in full swing, so we might as well talk about it a little. Besides, it will give you something to chat about this evening.

There are a couple of noteworthy mock drafts today.

SB Nation released its latest mock Tuesday. SBN has the Giants picking 31st (32nd would be much nicer) and taking Georgia guard Cordy Glenn. Incidentally, Mocking The Draft ranks Glenn the No. 29 overall prospect in this year's draft in rankings last updated Dec. 1. MTD says the 6-foot-5, 348-pound Glenn "possesses both the size and athletic skills to make an impact in the NFL."

The other noteworthy draft is the first mock released by NFL.com's Albert Breer. He has the Giants selecting 29th (booo!) andchoosing Alabama linebacker Dont'a Hightower. Mocking The Draft ranks the 6-foot-4, 258-pound Hightower No. 22 on its prospect list, and calls him "the 2011 version of Rey Maualuga - a powerful inside linebacker who has some trouble moving around."

Purging demons of Jay Feely

I went to the NE-KC game that day (was an early game, Giants were the late game). I pointed out someone wearing a Vinateri jersey, and said “Who buys a kicker’s jersey? Really.”

I listened to the Giants game on the way home, and after each Feely miss, my “friend” helpfully chimed in with “that’s why you don’t buy a kicker’s jersey.”

I would love to see our defense get some points on the board.

I love the turnovers especially in our last game against the pack, but since Boley gave that kid a football, …to the head, I don’t remember our defenders finding pay-dirt. (IIRC they did have some potential ones vs the Jets. who received some favorable calls)

Although I will gladly take our current production as long as it means the ball doesn’t get coughed back up trying to do something stupid.

I really think turnovers and possession are going to be key to the 49ers game, their defense is pretty damn tough and I don’t want to see us lose another possession to Aker’s awesome onside kicking ability.

Stay out of harm's way

Eli needs to be smart about taking sacks, like he has been. AB needs to go down when his forward progress is stopped. Returners need to favor the fair catch and the touchback (won’t significantly affect field position anyway). Nick needs to tuck the ball away after the catch. No showboating the ball on the way to the end zone. If the catch isn’t there, bat the ball down don’t tip it up. If you get a take-away don’t be afraid to go to the ground and stay there.
We don’t need highlight film material, we just need the win.
This team is a dangerous physical team that will be trying to strip the ball on each and every play. Don’t play into their hands trying to be a hero. No left-handed passes, even if the guy is wide open.

I am a fan of Kevin Gilbride and I don't care what you say.

He sure was a part of it

Grant is a leader and a half plus he has stepped his game all the way up. He is no longer playing as if he has the athleticism from his youth.

Instead he now plays with the knowledge of a vet like Ray Lewis, he knows his limitations but uses his brain to make plays. He is certainly a huuuuuge reason for this team getting back on track

You realize Baas's base salary for 2011 was $1mill, right?

According to NJ.com, his total contract was 27.5mill over 5 years. 11.5mill of that is guaranteed. If you cut him now, I’m pretty sure 4/5 of that signing bonus becomes a cap hit for 2012.

I’m perfectly fine with waiting another full year to see what Baas has before asking for his head.

That is absurdly premature

1) He’s been hurt

2) He plays a position where communication, comfort, and chemistry are ABSOLUTELY vital to success. Not only with the rest of the line, but with Eli as well.

3) There’s been shuffling/upsets all along the line.

Lets give him a year before we pass judgement… of course if we’re declaring draft choices busts in the preseason, patience is going to be in short supply.

by BigBlue91 on Jan 17, 2012 8:41 PM EST up reply actions

Dwayne Allen would be awesome as well.

I can virtually assure you he’s not a Jimmy Graham type player that creates mismatches. He’s a little slow…but he blocks well and is a great route runner. He’d be a poor man’s Gronk or a Brandon Pettigrew type player if we look at it somewhat optimistically.

by BigBlue91 on Jan 17, 2012 8:52 PM EST up reply actions

haha don't know every prospect, just my opinion. I watch ALOT of college football.

I think he’d be a great pick for us, simply for the fact that he’s a huge upgrade over Ballard in the pass catching department while losing nothing in the blocking aspect. Given who the Giants have at WR, I doubt Allen would get as many looks as Graham or Gronk does…but he’d add another dimension to our passing attack.

I’d love to have someone like LaMichael James in the 2nd or 3rd round…a specialist pass catching running back that’s really shifty as well…I guess to model after Darren Sproles…that would REALLY set our offense apart.

I think if we got a real talented one that could win his 1 on 1 battles more often, he'd get the ball more.

I think Ballard is awesome, but he’s so slow that he’s often covered by an athletic enough LB.

by BigBlueIntervention on Jan 17, 2012 9:47 PM EST up reply actions

Slow = TRUTH

If you watch the replay of MMs TD (I’m pretty sure)

You see Ballard release, damn I hope he was in pain, cause I think Petrus cold have caught him. He’s the perfect 2nd TE, and he’s playing well enough, but a better guy would help. Not sure they’d produce all that much more, but the threat might open space for the WRs

A: Too early for Draft talk

B: NFL.com’s mock sucks. Why the hell would we take Hightower? “powerful linebacker who has trouble moving around.” We already have Kiwi! And he’s a damn good pass rusher too! Besides, Dont’a’s projected to be a 3-4 inside backer.

B1: LBzzzzzzzz

C: Gilbride seems to love his pulling guards and rb screens. Will a 350lb guy like Cordy Glenn be able to do that?

not as well as David DeCastro, but that dude is gone in the first 15 picks.

DeCastro at his peak is another Chris Snee.
Cordy Glenn, if we’re optimistic, could be a Carl Nicks.

He’s got awesome bulk that can be used to push back and win at the point of attack. Its been awhile since we’ve had a dude push people back. I don’t know if he can play right tackle or not, so idk how we feel about drafting a G, but there it is.

JPP is much, much, much more than some random pass rusher. He is dominant ALL over the field. There is no other defensive player like him.

And for the record, I HATED THE PICK. Threw beer at my own TV. So I was doubly stupid. That said, we have seen the issues with Kiwanuka at LB. Not fast enough, not athletic enough, not really an LB. Put him back on the line, rotate the four guys we have, and WREAK FUCHING HAVOC on the opposing O’s. Either draft or FA for another LB. We will be fine with Boley, Williams, and whoever.

I don’t mind Glenn, I think he can be successful, but I also like Petrus. If it were up to me, probably go CB. I don’t think we re-sign both TT and Ross. Dennard, Kirkpatrick, and Janoris Jenkins stocks are all dropping. Kirkpatrick likely will not be available…but in terms of pure ability, Jenkins is right up there, and Dennard is a carbon copy of Prince IMO.

Goff being a priority remains to be seen. If Steve Smith was given the JR "show me" treatment, you can be SURE Goff is getting the same.

He is not a priority. He was developing okay on a pretty poor defense. I’ll take the D that is playing now any day of the week. We can do better than Goff one year removed from destroying his knee.

And had a different surgery. He should come cheap because of that, but he should be ready to play. How well is another story.

Well...

considering Goff was a top 5 LB against the run, he certainly would have helped this year.

Also, (judging by the preseason) he was looking like a legit MIKE when it came to dropping into coverage.

Its also too bad that Sintim (yes Sintim) got hurt. He was playing great football when he went down (coincidentally he got tangled in a stumbling receiver that he was in airtight coverage of).

Who would fit with us best of the corners in this draft

Also which of the corners could be there around when we pick and what is your ranking of them?

by BigBlue91 on Jan 17, 2012 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

Well, as of right now

1) Morris Claiborne
2) Dre Kirkpatrick
3) Janoris Jenkins
4) Alfonzo Dennard
5) Chase Minnifield
6) Stephon Gilmore
7) Jayron Hosely
8) Casey Hayward

I’d say 3 to 6 would be in our draft range. Minniefield is probably the best zone coverage CB…Dennard is a Prince clone in terms of skillset…Jenkins had some legal trouble, but he’s awesome. I’d go with Jenkins. Hosley can play the slot better than some of the guys ranked ahead of him and he’s fast, but he’s kinda short

by BigBlue91 on Jan 17, 2012 9:59 PM EST up reply actions

not sure if he got hurt or not...certainly has got the size...and his speed definitely is lacking a little.

My favorite safety in the draft class is Mark Barron. He reminds me of…well…Antrel Rolle. Great tackler, awesome in run support…nothing special in coverage and upside is decent. Is a decent athlete, and a great leader.

Another good one is OSU FS Markelle Martin. ct17 knows more about him than I do, but he’s definitely stood out when I saw him on defense.

"We will not be denied." - Antrel Rolle

by BigBlueIntervention on Jan 17, 2012 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

Minnifield and Martin

Minnifield had some loose cartilage in his knee. He played through it most of the season, probably got to the point no one wanted to see him get hurt more and hurt his draft stock.

Minnifield played man and true, NFL-type zone coverage at Virginia. You get smart players there. Frankly, in October they looked better than us. But what I like about Minnifield was that he was the slot CB in the nickel package. Fills the need.

Markelle Martin is another smart player. No one gets by him, run or pass. Covers a lot of ground, makes sure tackles instead of big hits.

2012 mock (Manningham resigns) - 1: Janoris Jenkins CB / Chase Minnifield CB, 2: Kevin Zeitler LG / Ben Jones C-LG / Cordy Glenn LG-RT, 3: Keenan Robinson SAM, 4: Neiko Thorpe FS, 5: Vic Ballard RB / Brandon Bolden RB

Off topic, but if we trade Osi,

I would LOVE to see Kiwi moved back to the D-line. I still haven’t forgot the incredible start to the season he had last year before the injury. I think he’s certainly a capable DE, but it’s not the best use of his talents, IMHO. He is a great run stopper, but with JWill, Boley, possibly Goff, Herz, Jones, Paysinger, and maybe Blackburn in the mix at LBZ, I wouldn’t really mind moving him back to DE.

Of course this all becomes moot if we keep Osi, and we really have no idea how that’s gonna end up. I do love Blackburn, and he’s earned a starting job for now, but I’d really love to see him be like a “super-sub” type of LB that Stephen Nicholas, who we almost signed in the offseason, is for the Falcons.

This is when a guy like Osi gets extended

Next year after draft, after FA, JR makes a list of guys they don’t want in FA, then he orders it, then he starts getting the extensions done.

It’s usually not a long list, your talking building block guys. If they want to move Kiwi back to DE, and they draft a DE project in the 3rd, might be a sign Osi is leaving.

MY PICK FOR THE GIANTS IN ROUND 1 IS......

Well at least for right now.

Alameda Ta’amu, DT/NT, Washington
Height: 6-3. Weight: 330.
Projected 40 Time: 5.42.
Projected Round (2012): 1-2.

Why?? because if and when we get this big boy it wouldnt matter if me and you played LB or End…..This guy is my prediction, he frees up everyone else and also is way more athletic than his size suggests.

Canty has three more years i know but this kid is the future and i also think that Linval would be better served playing 3 technique and there is no way and offense could handle Alameda, Austin, Canty, Lival, Tuck, Osi,JPP…..NO WAY!!!

Peyton May Have The Wins!!
But Eli Will Have The Rings!!!

Help me here with Hightower

A projected first rounder who has “some trouble moving around”? To an outside position, or just moving, period?

Not a ringing endorsement.

I’m with the majority here tonight – guess Ed’s gotta run with the headline, but the draft’s not on my radar this week.

Drafting MLBs is different than DEs

You want to rush the passer, you draft Kiwanuka and JPP. Big, athletic, make-the-QB-shit-his-pants kind of guys. No thinking involved.

The MLB runs the defense. Calls the plays, needs to read offenses and the QB, needs to be a team leader. You need intelligence and discipline. An out-of-control athlete is a horrible idea for MLB. Burfict needs to go to a 3-4 team where the other ILB handles the thinking and leadership stuff.

Agreed.

I like your mock draft, by the way ct. I’m not sold on McNutt at the bottom of round 1 though. Replacing Manningham would be a lot easier with Kendall Wright, no? They have similar skillsets, and we could use a burner to stretch the defense opposite Nicks and next to Vic manning the slot.

The other guys I’m on board with, though I don’t know much about Thorpe or Ballard. I love Glenn, so that’s cool. Zeitler is fine as well, as is Jones. Prefer Brewster over Jones though, I think he’s a bit smarter…I liked Kirkpatrick last year, I think Brewster is a similar prospect (though obviously better).

by BigBlueIntervention on Jan 17, 2012 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

Wright is closer to Manningham

More of a big play threat. I’m just high on McNutt now. Size, hands, athleticism. Good production for a run-first offense. Eli likes them tall. He could be a Nicks clone.

Thorpe played CB last year, so he has the athleticism. Always getting his name called from being involved in the play. Had a good bowl game. I need to find some more tape on Bolden. The guy caught a lot of passes for a college RB. Has good size. Also plays ST.

2012 mock (Manningham resigns) - 1: Janoris Jenkins CB / Chase Minnifield CB, 2: Kevin Zeitler LG / Ben Jones C-LG / Cordy Glenn LG-RT, 3: Keenan Robinson SAM, 4: Neiko Thorpe FS, 5: Vic Ballard RB / Brandon Bolden RB

I guess I can see it. I wanted an infusion of speed, so Wright seemed pretty good.

Also, Dwight Jones seems pretty damn good to me too. 6’4 210 lbs with sub-4.5 speed. I’d prefer him over anyone not named Floyd, Blackmon or Jeffery.

Forgetting also about REAL LT’s wet dream, Sanu….he’d be a nice target I suppose. I really wish Broyles didn’t tear his ACL….

Gotta love Rolle's comments about Davis hoping the Giants win.
“They better be careful what they ask for,” Rolle said Tuesday on WFAN-AM (via the New York Daily News). “Because their wish has been granted.”

Rolle said he “can only hope” Davis said what he did on account of the home-field ramifications involved. Rolle followed that with another bravado-fest that sounded like the type of thing a professional wrestler would bark at “Mean” Gene Okerlund before the Royal Rumble.

“I don’t give a damn who we’re playing, man,” he said. “That’s my take. I’ll take any opponent, any given day. That’s my attitude. If someone has a problem with it, oh well. But that’s how I am. That’s how I was raised. I don’t shy away from any opponent. My heart doesn’t pump any Kool-Aid, only blood. I’m ready for whenever, however, whatever, however it gets to me. I’m ready for it.”

(Rolle then drifted into an inflamed dream state, where he climbed to a top turnbuckle and delivered a flying elbow drop on Cris Collinsworth.)

by Giantstep on Jan 18, 2012 2:23 AM EST up reply actions

Yes Agree

TC must have asked them to not to say anything that can be twisted by the media. In fact it seems certain people have been chosen to give certain statements. The whole team is disciplined right now and are listening to TC in unison. Did you notice how everyone left for Greenbay in suits and in the post game press conferences they were wearing suits.

In the conference championship, words don't matter

I don’t think comments make any difference, as the opponents aren’t going to give something ‘extra’ because of comments. In the regular season that can happen, as team’s level of enthusiasm varies from week to week. In the championship, potentially the last game of the season, everyone already gives everything.
I think confidence makes a big difference, especially against a physical team. Sometimes repeating over and over words of self-confidence can help in controlling the fear for yourself and your teammates.
I think lining up for each play with “We will not be denied” is much stronger than lining up with “So they think they are great, huh”
Having said that, it is evident that a TC team just focuses on the next task at hand rather than bluster. We leave that for the New York coaches sitting at home.

I am a fan of Kevin Gilbride and I don't care what you say.

Fortunately I don't think it will be possible for them underestimate the 9ers

If the 9ers had won less dramatically, without Smith leading two 4th quarter TD drives, it would have been easier to look past them. It’s tough to watch that game and not come away thinking that they are a great team.

In my best Roger Goodell voice, " With the 32nd pick of the 2012 NFL Draft the Giants Select Dante Hightower, ILB, from Alabama. " This would be a great pick for them. Solidifies a big need, can call defense signals as he did in Alabama, 6-4 260. In big games makes big plays.

Still don't get why everyone says we need a LB

Boley has played at a pro-bowl level. Kiwi is a rock at LB, with Williams more than spelling him on passing downs. We’ll have a healthy Goff at MLB next season, and we still have Herz, Paysinger and Jones who are all rookies. Why would you draft another LB, when you have 4 rookies that haven’t had a chance to grow and show they can/will improve. It’s a waste of a draft pick. Any LB we draft won’t stat, as we all know, and will just be a promising young prospect, depth guy, which we already have plenty of. IMO, offensive line and TE are the two biggest needs. Maybe a safety if Kenny isn’t resigned, but let’s not get into that now. Take care of business on Sunday boys, punch that ticket to Indy.

"They're going to expect me to go out there and play better to win games, and I expect that from myself, ... There's no reason for me not to go out there and play at a high level."- Eli Manning

Bring The Trophy Home!

As for the draft it is time to get linebackers and offensive linemen.
If we are picking at 32 let’s hope one of the following is available, P.Konz/OC Z.Brown/OLB.
Then in the second round grab K.Zeitler/OG P.Konz’s partner at Wisconsin.
Getting both Konz and Zeitler would give A.Bradshaw and E.Manning some youth and talent back into their running and passing game.
N.Potter/OT Boise State would be a great steal in the third if availble.

let’s bring the trophy home for this year.
