SB Nation New York Editor's Pick
This isn't your 2007 Giants
This just isn't. This is a new team of football. And we will NOT be an afterthought of the 2007 Giants.
The 2007 Superbowl winning Giants have been compared to this years team in many ways. Yes, both time we were underdogs. Yes, both times are defense has been stepping late when it has mattered. Yes, both times we were not predicted to go far, even in the regular season. Yes, both times we defeated the top teams in the league. Aside from that, there is not much resemblance.
2007 record: 10-6 Wildcard
2011 record: 9-7 Division Winner
Not necessarily a cause for alarm that this year's team is worse, but its just to point out that the two teams started off on different pathways. Technically for us, our playoff season this year started in Week 16 (Jets).
First off, I'd like to talk about the offense. That year we had more of a balanced passing/rushing combo where for rushing we had
____________________Attempts__________Total Yards_______Avg Per Carry___ TDs_____ Yds/Game
2007 Regular Season -......469........................ 2148 ........................ 4.6....................15............. 134.3
2011 Regular Season -.....411......................... 1427 ...........................3.5......................17............ 89.2
Huge difference in the run game. That's about 45 yds less per game from our running backs. But what does that transfer over too? Our passing game. (Only Eli's numbers since he was and still is our main QB)
___________________Attempts__Comp___Total Yards___Yds/Game___Avg____TD/ Int_____Rating
2007 Regular Season -......529.......... 297.............. 3336............ 208.5......... 6.3.........23/20..........73.9
2011 Regular Season -.......589............359...............4933.......... 295.9..........8.4..........29/16...........92.9
We have, by far, changed our game plan this year due to ineffective running and Eli has stepped up and delivered. The TD/Int ratio is alot lower than in 2007. We became a more efficient pass-first team rather than one that relies on the run.
Secondly, I'd like to mention our style of winning. Throughout the season, Eli has lead this team to several comeback wins and we did not really have many blowouts. We had a lot more comfortable wins back in 2007 DURING the regular season. However, in the playoffs, we would win games in more dramatic fashions.
Won Wild Card Playoffs(Buccaneers) 24–14
Won Divisional Playoffs(Cowboys) 21–17
Won Conference Championship (Packers) 23–20
Won Super Bowl XLII (Patriots) 17–14
Aside from the Wild Card game, these wins were alot closer than the ones we have played now.
Now let's look at our playoff games, so far (Including Jets + Cowboys)
Won Week 16 (Jets) 29-14
Won Week 17 (Cowboys) 31-14
Won Wild Card Playoffs (Falcons) 24–2
Won Divisional Playoffs (Packers) 37-20
If you look at the games we've played, we have absolutely manhandled most of the teams here. 15 pt win to the Jets. 17 pt win to the Cowboys. 22 pt win to the Falcons. 17 pt win against the closest team to undefeated since the 2007 Patriots. There is not much resemblence there my friends.
In my opinion, those are the most important differences in these two teams that I can actually right about. The coach is the same. The quarterback is the same, but the team is different. This isn't the 2007 Giants. Plus, we have already defeated the top team on this year's journey, which was our last step 4 years ago. That's huge.
We aren't the 2007 Giants, oh no we are not. This is a whole new legacy, my friends. This is a new chapter. This is the 2011 New York Motherflippin' Giants.

WOW
There was exactly 60 more passing attempts this year as opposed to 2007, and 58 more running attempts in 2007 than 2011. Did we actually run an almost identical amount of plays in both years? This just seems incredible to me.

There were like 10-15 more passing attempts done by the other QBs on Giants
i excluded them

Nice job here. If you have not then notice my sig i have been using for over a week now.
This is not the 2007 team.
2011 NYG will have their own legacy.
Still, we are talking about a 15 play difference? A cool coincidence to me

One other thing,
I’m not so sure that we aren’t playing the best team this week. GB’s defense was just so bad all year. Niners don’t have Rodgers, but the rest of their team overall is MUCH better.

I was going record-wise
but you can’t say GB was not a very good team

the entire defense and ST obviously much better, but the targets on offense are inferior

wr's are better, but not rb or te

Have to disagree, Pack are a much
stronger team all around. 15-1 in a tougher division. and defending champs. Layoff hurt and their secondary was a bad match-up for Giant wideouts.
2011 version has an improved Eli with more and better weapons for an aerial attack.
But a weaker OL
Eli Manning is the opposite of Lebron James. If you ask Lebron for change for a dollar, he only gives you 75c because he doesnt have a fourth quarter. When Eli asks for change, he only takes one quarter because thats all he's gonna need

Great post!
However, although the Packers are the best team record-wise, I would have to agree with those who don’t think they are the best team overall this year. I think the 49ers are slightly the better team. They will be our hardest test of all the teams that we have faced during this playoff run.

Sunday Is The Real Superbowl
Hard not to respect Tom “Mr. Machine” Brady, but it seems clear to me the NFC team is winning SB XLVI. (Injuries, bad refs, & weird-pointy-ball-bounces always a possibility, tho’.) Packers and Patriots thought/think they were/are entitled. Can’t see Ravens going all the way. So . . .
This is really for all the marbles, two highly motivated, well-prepared, talented, balanced teams.
FINISH!
Stop SOPA.
My thoughts as well.
Of the four teams still left, two of the stronger teams imo are coming out of the NFC. The SB, barring any of the anomalies you list LK, is pretty much a lock for the winner between the Giants and 9ers. Both teams probably already entertain this notion even though they won’t say it to the media. I have a crazy feeling that this game will be a very very difficult one for the Giants.

The key to beating the Ravens is to slow down Rice and don’t turn the ball over. Turnovers are a huge part of the success of their defense.

Would love to get a bit of that 07/08 running game going!
Agreed that the passing game is far superior this year and the margins of victory they’ve put up the past 4 weeks is truly impressive – especially after all of the nail-biters during the season. But I do have a bit of a knot in my stomach thinking about the futility of the running game most of last week, against a much inferior defense.
Our running game is gonna be like minimal
next game against SF.

Honestly if we lose this week, I will be disappointed obviously, but I will know we have a damn good squad going into next year
Tony Romo, Michael Vick, and Rex Grossman are down with JPP

Patriots
Well one things for sure. You guys have wrote the book on how to beat New England. No one does it better. I personally give the Giants the best chance of the four at bringing home the Lombardi…just my two cents

In my mind, the pats are pretty much a worse version of the packers
That being said, Gronkowski is more of a threat than any GB reciever. You can’t guard that guy.
Go Giants!

True. Baltimore will do a better job however. They won’t stop him but if they can rough up Brady a little it’ll make a difference.

for the minority
Same coach and same QB. That is the teams identity and core. Walsh and Montana, Belicheck and Brady, Knoll and Bradshaw, etc.
We're distinctly different
Still built on that ferocious front 4..without that we would be nowhere.
however offensively its definitely flipped, from balanced to pass heavy.
And in this years postseason we are much more balanced defensively.
I say we are the best overall team left HANDS DOWN..and thats why we will all be at yet another Super Bowl parade, celebrating our little heines off in the canyon of heroes!

All the way to a Super Bowl victory like a knife through butter
JPP Is hands down the best DE in the NFL right now
Can't spell Elite without ELI
Jerry Reese for President 2012..let's make that happen!
