NFL Officiating Is Losing Its Credibility

What's up to all my die hard NY Giants fans out there?! If you are like me, you are still riding high after that historic 37-20 upset win over the Green Bay Packers this weekend at Lambeau Field. It was one of those games to remember for a long, long time. Another thing that I know for certain that many fans(Giants fans in particular) will remember is the horrendous calls made by the refs in this very important game. After all the smoke was cleared, the league issued a particularly vague statement about one of the many questionable calls made when a Greg Jennings apparent fumble was called down by contact after one referee initially called it a fumble. Had the Giants lost this game as a result of that play, I believe that that incident would've been dubbed, "Fumblegate" because every person with two working eyeballs could see CLEARLY that the ball was coming out way before ANY part of Jennings's body had touched the ground. For the league to issue a statement saying that referee Bill Leavy's decision not to overturn the indecisive ruling on the field was correct according to the technical definition of the rule, left me wondering if NFL officiating can really be trusted. To make matters worse, this wasn't the ONLY call that this officiating crew clearly screwed up during the course of this game.

At around 9:21 of the 3rd quarter, Giants HB DJ Ware ran the ball on a shotgun draw on 3rd and 2 and was tackled apparently past the line of scrimmage. Somehow, the referee then spotted the ball a whole yard short of where Ware had went down with the football. Tom Coughlin, seeming to sense that he wouldn't stand a chance at winning this challenge after he had lost such an obvious one previously, chose not to throw the red flag. In my opinion, this was also a decision by the refs that had me screaming, " WTF!" and "This is some BS!!!" at my TV screen like plenty of others did as well, I'm sure. Nonetheless, that call also had no effect on the Giants performance other than the fact that it caused us to give the ball back to the Packers once again to help them try and dig themselves out of hole that was starting to get deeper and deeper. By this time, it was crystal clear what was happening... these refs were on the home team's side

Later on during the 4th quarter, after Aaron Rodgers was sacked on 4th down and a Ryan Grant's fumble allowed the Giants to tack on another 10 points, the looks of Green Bay coming back from this one was starting to look like a pipe dream. I was almost positively sure that at this point, the refs would do something to try and help them out again and to my expectations, they proved me right. A little after the 7 minute mark of the 4th quarter, Green Bay tried to mount a comeback. After two straight completions, Aaron Rodgers scrambled out of the pocket to throw another incompletion to Donald Driver and was hit immediately by Osi Umenyora as soon as the ball left his hands. What do the refs do to make sure they extend this last minute drive?... Yup, you guessed it, they throw a flag and call Umenyora for a 'blow to the head', which clearly did not happen. When Joe Buck and Troy Aikmen(both of whom I'm convinced hate the Giants) start to question the validity of the calls on the field, in DEFENSE of the Giants, it has to be extremely blatant. This 'phantom' blow to the head call allowed GB to score a TD, but time was not on their side. After they failed to recover the ensuing onside kick, the Giants scored again on a rushing TD by Brandon Jacobs that sealed the game. So despite a 15-1 regular season record, one of the league's most prolific QBs, some of the league's most dangerous WRs, AND a lot of home cooking officiating, the Packers were about to do the one thing that their name suggests they do best... start packing, and become the only team in NFL history with a 15-1 regular season record end up 'one and done' in the playoffs.

Aside from the fact that the questionable calls made by this officiating staff did not determine the outcome of this game, I do not think for one minute that it should be overlooked or swept under the rug. By the league giving such a vague and incomprehensible explanation for only one of the calls in that game, one has to wonder how things would be if a referee's call/no call will in fact determine the outcome of a game as big as the Conference Championship Game or better yet, the Super Bowl. Its not like we live in such a trustworthy world that the thought of a referee of a professional sport wouldn't try to rig the game with questionable calls for whatever reason is something that is preposterous. People have been put in federal prison for the exact same thing. All any true fan of a sport only wants two things out of that sport's officials.... fairness and consistency. Is that too much to ask for, or is the league becoming so driven by marquee matchups on the biggest stage that would rake in millions to an already billion dollar industry, that they would sacrifice the integrity of the sport by having refs who would blatantly sabotage a game in favor of the most popular team? I would hope not, but the possibility of that happening isn't all that far fetched. Especially when a clear mistake, is not called exactly what it is. A mistake... or two, or three.

But yes the refs did want GB to win. They are human and probably had wagers on the game.
They have bills to pay just like you and I and the league does not pay them millions of dollars.

yes...

But look at the post I made. In 2009, CNN said they made 25-70 thousand a year. That is not bad for a part time job. Should the league have to play millions to get quality work? I don’t think so.

by Ualtar on Jan 17, 2012 10:30 AM EST up reply actions

yes

they should make these guys fulltime employees. keep them studying the rules & watching film all off season & pay them twice what they get now. They can easily afford it. And if these guys don’t want to be fulltime refs, then fire them & get someone thats willing to dedicate themselves to the greatest sport in the world. We’ve got the best teams, players, & coaches on the planet. It deserves nothing but the best officiating as well.

This x1000000000

Since the NFL could crush the population of entire states with the money they make and essentially prints money at this point, they can afford full-time officials.

they need younger refs. The players are too big and fast for 50 & 60 year old men to officiate. Your eye sight, reflexes etc aren’t the same.

I'm there with you it makes me nauseous

They’re either trying to fix the game or they’re just awful at their jobs, either way changes need to be made.

But you gotta give the Giants credit, lesser teams would have crumbled, used the bad calls as excuses, Green Bay got 14 extra points and we beat them by 17—that’s amazing!

For the league to try and defend the fumble replay standing...

Makes matters much worse IMO. There should be an independent investigation into NFL officiating. Between the two games vs Green Bay there has to be about 15 mistakes and about 5 or 6 egregious mistakes. This from Tripplet the first time, who is terrible. Then Leavy does a playoff game when he should’ve been fired permanently fired after the Steelers/Seahawks SB.

awful awful awful

those calls were clearly one sided and it really makes you question the entire game.

mistakes are one thing but they don’t ALWAYS happen in favor of one team.

the fix was on. It sucks to come to this realization….it sucks even more to think that the league has a hand in it, but what other conclussion should I come to?

anyone?

Goodell shoulda fell on his sword and ripped the refs, instead they try to justify it, which makes it even more sickening…..and blatantly obvious IMO.

Or at least an attempt, the calls were to one sided.
But its business guys we all know that. I’ve worked for 2 major fortune 500 companies and a line I’ve heard more times then I can count is “sure it isn’t fair but how much can we make from and what will we lose”

The NFL has nothing to lose, they have all hook line and sinker. What would they have gain. Rating through the roof. The brite young star defending his SB title against the legand Tom Brandy going four his 4th ring.

We should only hope the Ravens don’t win the win game. If so we may see the same one sided game called in the 9ers favor. With the NFL drooling of the Brothers Bowl.

On the other hand if NE wins we might see a few go our way. With the NFL planning promotion for the Brady Eli rematch.

The NFL defense of the fumble call was a joke

they basically took a shot at Fox for something the commentators never said, and then said IT’S NOT HIS KNEE THAT MATTERS, IT’S HIS CALF OR ANY PART OF HIS LEG.

This, of course, totally ignored the fact that NOTHING was down before the ball started to come out.

No one is buying their defense of the replay…but to defend it by creating a scarecrow argument for the opposition is just pathetic.

This is a sig.

agree with many here the defense of the call makes it worse

sometimes you gotta say “my bad.”

If the NFL came out and said, “Sometimes we make the wrong call. Nobody is perfect, we’re sorry for the mistake and we are taking steps to minimize mistakes in the future.”

they would come out of this with a lot more credibility. As opposed to, you know, NONE.

+1

The fact that the NFL has, in the past, come out and admitted officiating errors makes this one that much worse.

And it’s always the same line of bullshit, which is that the official needs “indisputable” evidence to overturn a call. Yet, when Triplett spends all of seventeen seconds in the booth to overturn a call (to make the wrong one) in the first meeting, it makes you wonder.

It’s ruining the game, but it also makes the victory that much sweeter. Beating two teams in one game is something. Still wish it was something we didn’t have to do.

by Max Schwager on Jan 17, 2012 2:03 PM EST up reply actions

Not fixed but certainly head scratching...

as bad as some of the calls were in the Packers game. The Jets game still pisses me off even more. JPPs strip sack being negated because of the ‘Tuck’ rule really infuriated me. You knew it was going to be overturned because of the letter of the rule but common sense would allow that the QB know longer had the intention to throw a forward pass as the ball is below his waist. So frustrating.
The second one might have been worse. Landfill Josepth knocks the ball out of Sanchez’s hand and the ball goes backwards. Again, ‘Tuck’ rule. Ok. Any pass that goes backwards is a lateral/fumble right?

The ref under the hood stuff must stop.

Waste of time and you’re asking a guy to admit he fucked up in front of millions of people.

Replay official signals all reviews, TV goes to two minute TV time out (replacing one of the change of posesion ones), advertisers love it because people can’t wait for the game to come back, league loves it because TV guys aren’t saying that it’s obviously one thing and then the ref calls it the other way.

Given the way the NFL works, it will be 5 years before they fix it.

Leavy was the one to overturn the original call. Is it really wise to have him review his own call? In the NCAA, the replay guys in the booth review the play, and the field ref has no say in the matter.

Despite how piss-poor its been lately

& With everyone complaining about how bad a job they’re doing, I have this odd feeling that good ole Rodge will send down the word. Call everything & anything. Call it early & often. Let’s be honest, during these playoffs, they’ve been letting guys get away with murder. But for some reason, I see us getting the polar opposite this week. We’ll get a taste of what it’s like when they call every little ticky tack penalty. Rodge wants people to see how bad it COULD be to have 76 flags thrown in a game compared to “letting them play”.

ANd honestly, I could care less if there’s a 176 flags thrown a game. I just want “fairness and consistency”. As u astutely pointed out.
