49ers Vs. Giants, 2012 NFC Championship Game: Back At It One More Time

Well, a little over two months after the 49ers and Giants faced off in a great Week 10 contest, our two teams meet again battling for a spot in the Super Bowl. Both of our teams were underdogs this weekend, although having to go on the road to Lambeau Field is certainly a mighty task. Congratulations on an awesome performance against the Packers. Apparently 15-1 doesn't get you as much as it used to.

I thought I'd open up a FanPost for some friendly discussion about the upcoming matchup. Both of our teams are playing solid football right now and there have been changes since they last met. Both teams were dealing with a variety of injuries. The 49ers have since released Braylon Edwards due to injury and ineffectiveness. Alex Smith has sort of taken a big step forward. The defense has come together rather nicely.

So, if you have any questions or comments, feel free to post them in here. Ideally this will be more about civil discussion than too much smack talk.

I will leave you with something Coach Harbaugh said after the Week 10 game. In his post-game locker room speech, he said about the Giants, "That's a classy team over there. That's a darn good team, that's a disciplined team. Good chance they'll be playing long into the playoffs, too." So, I'd imagine he's not shocked by the Giants upset of Green Bay. It should be a great game this Sunday.

Coughlin

It’s funny the things you hate about him are why I love him…

I’ve never ever wanted him to go but did believe if no playoffs this year we might cut ties, I trust our ownership group as smart classy individuals to make the right personnel decisions from coaches to players, we usually get it right.

Eli and Coughlin make me proud to be a Giants fan, the way they go about their business. Good peoples and they deserve success.

Never ever wanted either of them gone. I would just feel weird not have Grandpa on our sidelines, such a good guy, We aren’t the Jets or Scarface, I dont want to be the Bad Guy!

1) think of it this way, Joe Torre won like 5 championships and at the end a lot of fans wanted him gone cause they’d hadn’t won another. I’m not sure if it matters, our ownership pretty much ignores that stuff completely.

2) teams ran on us early, much less success lately. My feeling, it’s not an area. It’s speed. DJAX has given us fits. If you can really stretch the field sometimes things don’t go so well for us. Our defense was stouter than the numbers suggested due to 3rd down failures. Since shoring things up (discussed below) we’ve looked far better.

3)I’m not sure success in the elements can be predicted. But I’ll say this, Nicks has huge hands, I’d bet he does well catching a wet ball. BJ is a standup one cut back, he could be a load in the mud. AB has a ton of moves, hard to see him cutting in the muck. But who knows, only thing I’ll say, it won’t be like when we played Atlanta or you the Saints. I don’t expect either team to get rattled by being outside.

It’s already a wrap… might as well not show up tomorrow.

You misunderstand

Its definitely insulting for a lead writer to basically say you’ve got no chance. But I get that some guys are cheerleaders, and they hold themselves to no objectivity. From my perspective a conversation with a cheerleader isn’t enticing, that’s why I posted it.

I never thought that the writer was a bad guy.

Especially at this point. Especially in a game with a spread under 3. I find a convo where one side tries to convince you that resistance is futile, to be boring and frustrating. That’s what you usually get from a cheerleader.

The 49ers fans were very arrogant the first time around

but after their team played us they did realize that the Giants are for real. Hopefully this time around they will have some respect. Some of the 49er fans that i know agree that their team had barely won it last time.

Hey, it’s hard to get to the final four without being good. I do think NY and SF are the two most complete teams left, and I also think SF will win – because I am an SF fan – plain and simple.

That I agree with 100%

Perhaps I’m just feeling persnickety after seeing a parade of asshats shake their heads saying no way the Giants are beating the … (any team you like here)

Wasn’t the prediction of victory, ‘twas the dismissal of our chances, and as you know I just blew off APC when I decided they were a gang of cheerleaders. To be fair, I don’t talk to missionaries either, when your point of view is inflexible the conversation gets stale in a hurry. Exhibit A, JPP is garbage. Niners Fans Seemed Pretty Realistic

judging by the time I spent at Niners Nation yesterday. Certainly not cocky, and not overconfident either — plenty of comments about watching out for the Giants and that the Giants aren’t the same team now that they faced in the regular season. (Not even remotely klike those slobbering cheeseheads . . . sheesh).

I’m actually a little worried about our fans here not seeing how much the Niners look and play like us. We liked our chances against SF better than against NO, but (like us) the Niners just get better each week.

I hope fans ion both sites can enjoy all of this without too much trash talk — we all got here ‘under the radar.’

It's not the fans who play the game. The team will play the game and they know it is one game at a time.

Coughlin already has the team focused on one game at a time and one play at a time in the game(s). It is an experienced team who knows the route to the superbowl well.

The players know Giants are 4-0 in championship game and will make sure it is 5-0 after this weekend.

This is not the 2007 team.
2011 NYG will have their own legacy.

by BB1156 on Jan 17, 2012 8:10 AM EST up reply actions

Right.

I do keep telling myself that, but some players’ public statements, and a kind of ‘feeling in the air’ that the Giants are now somehow destined puts the fear in me . . . I’ll give it a rest now.

FINISH!

by Lady Kaede on Jan 17, 2012 8:24 AM EST up reply actions

Sometimes players say things when they are asked a question.

No player is going to say that they will lose. They are supposed to say they will win. This is not only confidence but a reminder to themselves and their won teammates. They also say these things to draw out statements from the opponent players. At times they have personal game-time rivalries to settle.

i blame the media more than the players when the statements come out. First they ask the questions then they twist the words. This time Coughlin will put his foot down and tell the players to not to say such things that get blown out if proportion.

This is not the 2007 team.
2011 NYG will have their own legacy.

Soooo..You score more away from home, but you also allow more pts. You actually have slightly more yards at home, and give up less yards at home. You win the turnover battle slightly more away. You give up sacks less and get sacks less on the road. Penalties are better for you on the road. Looks pretty even for you home and away.

The big difference is the point scored at home for GB. 8 pts more. They also have about 20 more yards, but allow 20 more yards at home. They had less turnovers away. They were sacked 1/2 sack more away. They were penalized quite a bit more on the road.
Sooo, while the outlier stats were similar the points were abundant at home. The Giants were able to capitilize on the turnovers and stay out of the penalty game giving them a great chance to win.

I actually didn't know..

the splits for GB which was why I did the research. Just saying someone is 8-0 at home doesn’t tell you how they played, just tells you they were 1 point better. And a team only having 1 loss gives it a 50/50 shot that it was away.
Nothing taking away from the Giant’s win at GB. As Jim Harbaugh would say, “that was a Mighty Man game”. The Giants wanted it more then the Packers. But there were reasons why the Giants won. They were able to get 10 pts off of Turnovers. Green Bay had 8 or 9 drops by their receivers. Green Bay whiffed on several key tackles to allow big gains to the Giants.

Not sure where I was reaching with my post, but feel free to enlighten me if you wish.

What was your home schedule this year?

Three weak division foes, plus

Tampa
Cleveland
Ny Giants – Very close win over injury depleted Giants D
Steelers – Win over 1 legged Roethlisberger
Dallas – Loss

And the road schedule? Aside from the same weak division foes (who of course would be expected to also play better at home)

Detroit
Philly
Baltimore
Bengals
Washington

Seems like the road competition was a bit more stiff. You still had a great 6-2 road record, but when you’re going to put up all those stats, you have to consider the difference in competition.

by NYStateofMind on Jan 18, 2012 9:34 PM EST up reply actions

The NFC West(Worst)

Nfc West vs Nfc East
Niners 3-1
Seahawks 2-2
Arizona 2-2
St Louis 0-3
NyGiants 2-2
Dallas 3-1
Washington 3-1
Philadelphia 1-3
Looks like that weak division played your team to a tie.
Not the same division this year as it was in the past. Seattle is a tough place to play. They beat Baltimore and Atlanta at home. They flew across country to take down your mighty Giants team. They are no slouch. Arizona had a 27-17 lead against the Giants midway through the 4th quarter before Eli put your team on his back to take the game. Arizona also flew into Philly and won. They beat Dallas and the 49ers at home. Some quality wins.

I get your reasoning though. The opposing team would play better at home then coming to SF. Hopefully it stands true again this weekend so they can send the Giants packing for the summer.

But your statistics are off. The Rams should be 0-4, meaning that it isn’t a tie, the NFC East takes it by two games. That said, the old ‘NFC West is the worst division in football’ narrative is just wrong.

No disrespect, but I gotta say you are crazy.

AFC South boasts the team (Houston) who probably would have been #1 seed if not for losing their starting QB, and an always tough Titans team. Both these teams have winning records. Not to mention the Colts… (just a fluke year for them, although who knows what the future holds now).

The AFC West meanwhile has some tough and or talented teams, but none of them can ever seem to put it together. I think the past 3 years 8-8 was just about good enough for the division title.

by NYStateofMind on Jan 18, 2012 10:56 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Well, going by divisional record...

The worst divisions are:

6t. NFC West (30-34)
6t. NFC East (30-34)
8. AFC South (26-38)

I hate the Packers mainly cause they used to always say they have more championships than us as they tend to count what happened in 1824 before the forward pass as if it counts as an actual Super Bowl.

I see what you're saying

But I think a division is tougher if you have one or two good teams and then 2 bad teams, rather than just 4 so-so teams.

Let’s say SF or NY played in one of those AFC divisions. I’d like their chances at winning the division a lot more in the West than in the South.

As for the NFC East, I don’t know what to make of it this year. I think Dallas, Philly and the Giants are all better than their records would indicate. For some reason though, none of them were able to find consistency this year. But take any of those teams, and they can beat any other team in the league on a given Sunday. And not just in the K.C. beat G.B. mold of "on any given Sunday. I mean they would be a legitimate threat to any team if they played how they should play.

by NYStateofMind on Jan 18, 2012 11:05 PM EST up reply actions

Plus

I think the NFC East a lot of times ends up looking bad record-wise, because there are a lot of quality teams and we all beat up on each other all year.

Not like the AFC West where it seems a more of a matter of, there just isn’t any team good enough to separate themselves from the pack.

Fact is

We always have to battle through tough competition just to win our own division. And yes, the NFC East often sends a team to the SB. We have 3 teams all with at least 3 SB trophies in our division. All the teams in our division are committed to putting a championship caliber team on the field. Just thank god Daniel Snyder is very bad at doing it LOL

by NYStateofMind on Jan 18, 2012 11:12 PM EST up reply actions

If you want to go that route...

If we make the super bowl this season, we will be the only NFL division to send all 4 teams to the super bowl in the last decade…

You may win based on your singular super bowl victory in 07, but our teams consistently get hot in the playoffs…

Division games aren't always tough

depending on your division. I don’t think SF in the 80’s or NE in the 2000s would have had such dynasties if they had tougher competition in their own divisions. They practically had a cakewalk to the division every year. Meanwhile, the Giants, Redskins and Cowboys split 8 SBs in a span from ’82 to ’95 and even Philly (the worst in our division as far as SB wins with 0) has gone to the SB twice and to the NFC championship 5 times in the 2000s.

Seattle

finished 4-3 and lost their last 2. Of those 4 wins, 2 were against St. Louis, one was against the Bears minus their starting QB and their All-Pro running back. The other win was against a Philly team that quit in that game.

Arizona’s finish was more respectable. And I agree that Arizona is no pushover. Except for QB, they are still similar team that went to SB a few years back. And you guys did emerge out of nowhere.

Don't forget about the regular season...

He also managed to do the same against Detroit, which was playing very tough at the time (riding an undefeated record).

So yes, we have confidence he can do the same against any team. But any situation like that takes a combination of skill and a little luck, so we would prefer to ride a lead and force Eli to try to come back against our defense.

But he’s also shown he can throw the interceptions and/or make bad decisions at times. Which Eli shows up Sunday?

On the other hand, Alex rarely makes a bad throw and has shown time and time again he can do what it takes to lead the Niners to victory. Just because he doesn’t have as much playoff experience, do not underestimate the exeperience he’s gained under often terrible circumstances the past 6+ years. He just doesn’t rattle anymore.

Eli has had a couple of 3 INT games

1) Seahawks game. He made a bad INT midway through the game. 2nd INT was off Cruz’s hands. 3rd was a desperative heave at the end of the game.

2) Two bad INTs….one excellent play by the safety.

Eli has made more dumb decisions than Smith has…but the reason he’s ranked higher than Smith is because he creates many more plays. What you saw Smith do against the Saints is something of a regularity for Eli.

So you are right in asking “Which Eli will show up?” but the odds of bad Eli making an appearance is close to 10%.

I support the Giants like bras support Kim Kardashian's boobs. It can be a struggle, we've had some jiggles, but we're still firm.

by BigBlueIntervention on Jan 17, 2012 11:12 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Let's put this in perspective

Eli lost his first 2 playoff games in years 2-3. Since then he’s 6-1 with some very high end numbers. Now Alex Smith has had a great career renaissance, but he’s played only 1 playoff game. It was a brilliant win to be sure, but it’s not exactly a track record.

I’ll say it again, it’s not a knock on Smith, but Eli has quietly put together a nice playoff résumé. Right now it compares favorably to the elite guys except of course Brady.

It’s already a wrap… might as well not show up tomorrow.

I totally expected the Saints to lose that game

given their record and diminished stats on the road. Obviously they are not used to seeing the sun. Brees threw an INT into the sun about 10 yards short of his receiver. And then the muffed punt or kickoff looking into the sun.

And I agree Eli (and his receivers) are the x-factor(s). Both D’s will make it hard to do anything. The way Giants D is playing especially, I can envision SF having a very hard time scoring TDs. On the other side, I think Eli makes a few big plays that will be the difference in the game.

But

he also didn’t throw many TDs. And he got sacked a LOT. I think those 2 trends will continue in this game.

by NYStateofMind on Jan 18, 2012 10:13 PM EST up reply actions

Smith was sacked

44 times which is quite alot. However, he was sacked 9 times at Baltimore Thanksgiving day. He was also sacked 6 times against Dallas, at the beginning of the season when the line was abysmal. Niners were much worse on the road when the crowd noise effects the line’s ability to hear the snap call. In the 8 other home games after the Dallas game, Smith was sacked a total of 9 times. I will take those numbers any day.
I know, I know….we played crappy teams at home right?

Niners O-line

The o-line plays quite a bit better at home. A loud stadium really gives the niners right side a nightmare.

LT- Joe Staley: 6’6 306lbs. This offseason he made it a point to lose weight to be able to handle a speed rusher better. It seemed to backfire at the beginning of the season because he then couldn’t handle the bullrush very well while learning how to play at the new weight. He has become quite a bit more consistent in the latter part of the year and now is probably once again their best pass protector.
LG-Mike Iupati: 6’5 329lbs. Great strength, can handle most bull rushers but sometimes can be confused on stunts. Also does a good job getting around on pulls but the other guard, Snyder, gets most of those duties. If the niners are going to run straight through the tackle they will more then likely run behind Lupati.
C-Jonathan Goodwin: At 6’3 318lbs, he is bigger then most centers around the league. He gets good push up the field in the running game but can be fooled on stunts or late rushers and will sometimes be sitting there not blocking anyone. The beginning of the season, Alex Smith and Goowin were having problems with the snap, but that seems to be a problem long gone.
RG-Adam Snyder: 6’5 316lbs. The niners pulling guard has pretty good feet and does well getting to the edge. Not as good at the straight away runs as he just doesn’t have the animal strength to blow people off the line. Also can have lapses in pass protection with a good stunt. The left guard, Davis, and Snyder can have decent days and then terrible days trying to protect Smith. They do a much better job at home though.
RT-Anthony Davis: 6’5 323lbs. The most vocal of the OL. If anyone is gonna get into a pushing battle with the DL it will be him. He seems to play with a mean streak but can be overwhelmed by a good speed rusher. Seems to have slow feet. At home, he is much better because he can hear the snap call better and get to the edge quicker then the end. Can also be found blocking noone at times. He needs to read blitzes better off the edge.

You will see a steady diet of Alex Boone as a 6th OL as well. Also, Justin Peelle, and Vernon Davis will stay in to block. There will be very few times that they have a basic 5 man OL.

The Niners OL can be hit and miss. You will know in the first quarter which you are facing.

great write up

One thing I’d add: this is a line that does not lack in size. I read somewhere that the 49ers have the third heaviest line in the league, and it shows on the field. The 49ers are not great at handling speed rushers or blitzers, but they hold their own against traditional 4-man rushes. Anthony Davis, in particular, is a liability off his kick step — but if he gets his hands on a defensive player, that guy is not going anywhere.

I still think the giants front four will be difficult for the 49ers to contain, but the Saints and the Ravens were more of a match up problem for this offensive line.

Thanks and congrats back to you guys.

1) Alex handles it pretty well. The bigger question should be how well does our o-line handle the pass rush. OL has their biggest problems against 3-4 defenses. All 3 of our losses came against 3-4 defenses. But the line has done pretty good lately in pass protection.

2) Rogers has played lockdown this year. Tarell Brown has done pretty good also, even though 49er fans don’t want to admit it. So while Cruz and Nicks are both solid, I do believe we can stop them. Manningham and Ballard don’t scare me.

We have heard something similar every week.

Eli and his outstanding stable of receivers will make plays. I wouldn’t expect as much success against your Niners like in the GB game, of course, but we are talking about one of the leagues best passing games that is healthy, confident, talented as hell, and is playing within the ridiculous rules that allow these guys to run all over the place.

To answer your questions...

Alex generally handles the pass rush very well unless your scheme gets someone through unblocked (which seems to happen more than we’d like to see). But I am not sure any QB manages that type of situation well.

He has shown a very solid ability to avoid the sack and extend the play, and also keep control of the football. There are the occasional exceptions, as always.

We have a very solid coverage unit, from our linebackers, to safetys, and corners. They have shown an impressive ability to keep the coverage tight even when plays get extended. When we have gotten burned has usually been to being over-aggressive in going after the ball rather then the player, but that doesn’t happen all too frequently and that same aggressiveness is why we have so many take aways.

What really helps our coverage has been the growth of Aldon Smith (aka 99 Problems). In tandem with Justin Smith, the two create constant pressure even when they can’t make a sack.

Our stout tun D also reduces the effectiveness of play-action as we can trust our front 7 to handle any run without safety help.

I expect both teams will move the ball well enough initially but not be able to keep drives alive and then the chess match will begin on how to find and exploit mismatches/weaknesses on the other side.

Field condtions

We have been hearing since Giants got on the bus that conditions going to hamper us. What are niners nation take on this? I see it like this your DB slips will or may cost you 6 with our speed. Cruz can turn 11 yards into 99 yard gain in perfect sunny days. What worries me is sloppy play by two discipline teams who obvious would not have sloppy play if conditions were right. of course injuries.

by Giantstep on Jan 16, 2012 10:06 PM EST reply actions

Our field is notoriously slow...

I don’t think it hinders us at all in the secondary, as much as make the ball harder to catch… But it’ll make us emphasize the run game more, which could be trouble for you guys…

Shorter passes are a lot more effective in the rain than your team’s usual deep big plays… We’d still have to miss a tackle to let you make big plays… I would personally think that our offense is better suited for the rain than yours, but who knows…

I think a secret about Cruz and Nicks big plays

They both run in the open field like a running back. They are big and powerful, and unafraid of contact, so they head upfield fast and hard, which puts a lot of pressure othe DBs. One bad angle, one missed tackle and they are gone. It really hasn’t been winding miracle runs.

I don’t think it gives anyone an advantage at all. I think you hit on something there with the discipline. If each team stays like that it shouldn’t matter at all.

"If we play our game..."

I’ve seen quotes from both sides to the effect that “If the (Giants/9ers) play our game, we will win.” Obviously, both sides can’t be right.

The Giants made it a habit of late scoring to win (except vs. Seattle & 9ers, where the final drive fell short in the red zone). Notwithstanding ASmith/VDavis heroics vs. NO, I think the Giants are better positioned for a quick score than the 9ers…

If it comes down to who has the ball last trying scores

Means its a toss up, then a flag, or no flag, a slip or one particularly good play by either team can and will decide the contest.

How can you predict advantage in that situation. Who would have said that 2007 Eli would have the edge on 2 time Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady if he had the ball down 4 with 2:00 to play.

It’s already a wrap… might as well not show up tomorrow.

What's up BBV

Lookin forward to another classic. Since the media doesn’t want either of us to be here it seems, we are all playing with house money. I’ll probably be pulling for the winner of this game in the super bowl, no matter what. I want the Niners to get there, but wouldn’t mind seeing the giants in it again, especially over the AFC teams left.

One question, simply: are you as surprised and happy to be here as most of us are? Not many Niner fans had us hosting a playoff game, let alone two. Are you guys ahead of where you thought at the beginning of the season?

by Blank x2 on Jan 16, 2012 11:53 PM EST reply actions

Most Giant fans recognize that we have had 7 consecutive non losing seasons

When you win 8 or more games you’re always in the running to make the playoffs. Once you get into the playoffs, what matters is how well you’re playing and how your team deals with the pressure. So I’d say most of us just wanted to make the playoffs and take our chances. I’d say few are really surprised we beat the Packers. I’d say many are surprised (including me) that it was a beat down. But that happens playoff time, and it rarely carries forward.

Does that help?

rain could change that

I think there’s pretty much nothing predictable about sloppy conditions except that it makes the game less predictable. The ball is harder to hold onto, which can mean more fumbles/muffed kicks/tipped balls, and the results of those events are almost entirely random. It moves the game closer to a coin flip.

How much do you guys LOVE Victor Cruz?!

Man I remember watching Hard Knocks: Ny Jets 2 years ago and there was a preseason game where Victor Cruz wearing #7 at the time and just burned the Jets D. Yeah it was preseason and against 2nd-3rd strings, but I was like, “WOW! He’s going to be huge playmaker in the future.” 2 years later, look at him…

Also I watched a game at the New Meadowlands/Metlife stadium during my stay in NYC, and boy do I envy your stadium. So freaking nice. I can’t wait for ours. I do know a lot of you guys are mad about the pricing and how much money it burned in Jersey.

by Giants49war on Jan 17, 2012 2:13 AM EST reply actions

It is actually a year later but that is good. Cruz has been awesome this year, but it really been three WO that we have made each other good. Nicks is big and physical. Cruz has neck breaking speed and he can cut on a dime. Ask Cromartie i think his shoes still planted at the 11 yard line in Met life.

I hope the rain stops because then it just becomes unfair event for both teams. I want to see a clean good old fashion hard nose football game.

Hey i want to just tell you don’t dismiss the speed and play of Manningham. He won plenty of games in his career and his speed sneaks up on you.

by Giantstep on Jan 17, 2012 2:26 AM EST up reply actions

He's been awesome

I love that teams have been shading coverages his way in the first two playoff games, allowing Nicks to explode. I expect it will go back the other way in the future, and we will be seeing more salsa.

But IMO, the coolest thing about him is he’s added a real personality (in a very good way) to a giants team that is often a little on the boring, flat side. It’s often good, because there are seldom distractions (aside from Osi’s annual contract beef), but the team can sometimes get into funks where the passion isn’t there. The fire with which he plays is a really good addition to the team’s emotional makeup.

Great point

about Cruz adding a little “flavor” to the team.

This kid is blossoming into a killer, IMO. I see that fire and hunger every time he snatches a ball away from a defender. Aside from the razor sharp quickness, sneaky route running, and breakaway speed, it looks to me like he is a fighter. And I love that.

his celebrations are by far the biggest of the WRs

Which is not to say that a touchdown dance is really important at all. But when you see Nicks and Mario make a TD catch and just kinda stand there most of the time, you kinda scratch your head. I dont doubt that both of those guys have enormous competitiveness, but those kind of things really do make a difference on the field. To have a guy who makes a big catch and is jumping up and down, yelling because he’s so pumped up is a positive. It shows in the plays he makes, too.

49ers played an awesome game last weekend

One of the best games I’ve watched in quite some time. You guys will definitely be a challenge for us. The difference in the two teams is that the Giant defense is alive and playing extremely well. 11 playing as 1. Much better execution on our part over the last month. Now don’t get me wrong I know the 49ers have a top notch defense, one of the best in the NFL, but in all fairness i believe the Giants have the better offense going into this game. Your strength is stopping the run, but we dont really run much, we do it to keep teams honest. This game could go either way. you guys are primarily and odd-front team

But tell me if this is correct-

from the several 49ers games i’ve seen this year, your D appears to have had a lot of success mixing it up and rushing the passer from an even-front look, using 4-3 concepts.

At least, that’s my read. True? Or was it just for a few games I happened to catch?

Also, does your offense run the majority of their plays out of 22 and 12 personnel groupings to use VD and Walker?

by dannymac56 on Jan 17, 2012 8:20 AM EST reply actions

Lots of looks

from basically a constant 4 man rush. They just change which 4 are actually rushing. The niner’s best pass rushing unit has Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks on the 2 edges, Justin Smith and Ray Mcdonald in the middle. That seems to get the best push….You will also see Patrick Willis get the occasional delayed rush up the middle and that has been productive at times. You will almost never see a Corner blitz however…I can’t remember that happening in a long time. I’m not sure how the numbers match up with the rest of the league, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Niners were the least blitzing team all year.

At the beginning of the year, the 2 TE set was used almost exclusively for the mass-protect concept. The OL was having problems keeping the QB clean so anything to help them out was used. Since Delanie Walker went out with a jaw injury, the sets have been a little bit more open. The Niners WR corps have been banged up all season really. From Braylon Edwards’ injuries, to Josh Morgan’s knee, to Kyle William’s concussion, to Ted Ginn’s ankle, to Micheal Crabtree’s foot..It really has been a miracle that they have got this far with Ted Ginn as your 3rd and sometimes 2nd option.

by dannymac56 on Jan 17, 2012 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

Our base defense is 3-4

But our best pass rusher, Aldon Smith, comes in in the Nickel, which looks like a 4 man front, so I guess that would be why. The Niners very rarely blitz, though that might change a bit this weekend because of what Manning did to the Packers specifically when they didn’t pressure him.

We run 2 TE sets a lot, but it’s still unclear whether our second TE will be playing. If he is, look for plenty of 2 TE sets, because our wide receivers simply aren’t very good.

I'm just happy this matchup is happening....

EVERYBODY in the media thought (and wanted) The Packers and Saints would go play a live action game of Madden, since that’s “the new way” of the NFL.

SO glad that old school, hard nosed, punch you in the face football put them BOTH out. I have memories when I was in grade school watching these teams battle in the playoffs, and this will be fantastic to watch.

Good luck on Sunday, and may the best (and toughest) team win.

He's been solid

He’s beginning to emerge as a #1 receiver for Alex, which is good because Alex definitely needs weapons. He doesn’t have incredible playmaking ability like Cruz or Nicks, but he’s a good route runner and he’s got great hands, despite getting a case of the dropsies last week. Not an All-Pro caliber wideout, but a solid #1 option. If we can get a #2 or even a #1 (and make him a #2), we have a chance to have a great pass attack.

by Tim Lincecum's Bong on Jan 17, 2012 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree

I think he is trash, takes off plays, doesnt even try hard on blocks most of the time running right by them, I think you would of wrapped the Saints game up if it weren’t for some of his poor play(drops, no blocks). I think Alex would be much better with a WR that gave a damn…. I’m a Giants fan so tell me I’m wrong but when WRs play like if the ball dont get thrown to them they dont want to be there it pisses me off…

This being said I hope he continues taking plays off, dropping pass and not blocking(atleast for this week).

lol what

He does not take off plays. Crabtree is an excellent blocker and has been recognized publicly by the coaching staff. He’s improved all year, but he did drop 3 balls vs the Saints. One was a low ball that he probably should have gone to the ground to catch, the 2nd was a horrible drop and the 3rd was a ball that he did catch, but had it stripped because it was thrown 2 feet too high.

exactly, coordinators are key

and the fact that he chose Gregg Williams to coordinate his defense does not speak highly of him. Williams’ defenses have rarely been above average, and when they are, they require great secondary play. The rams have literally no depth at DB, and were starting UFL players in 2011. the only reason the giants are getting respect is that they've done this before

The storyline is there for the media to refer to. That’s all the media does, it turns new things that are happening into evidence to support old storylines. The niners haven’t won in so long that from their short attention spans, it has never happened. As soon as the giants beat the falcons, the 2007 comparisons started, which was ridiculous after winning just one playoff game. I’m actually kind of relieved, I thought that was all we were going to hear about this week, but it’s been kind of subdued. If the giants make the superbowl, though and especially if they face the patriots, it will get ridiculous.

In a big game someone you least expect, steps up big and has a great game. Who on the 49ers do you think that might be<

by maraman on Jan 17, 2012 1:57 PM EST reply actions

I would guess...

Kendall Hunter. He is a scatback, has great hands, and great feet. Can break out a 60 yard run or a big reception on a screen at any point of the game.

On offense, Kyle Williams or Ted Ginn having a big game would be surprising, but they both have the capability of breaking a play.

I don’t think Hunter would be too surprising, particularly since in a rainy game they’ll be running a lot and Alex checks down a lot.

That said, if I had to choose anyone, it would probably be Ted Ginn. I don’t think he’ll do much, but he has the potential to break a big play, especially on special teams. He very nearly did against Baltimore but it was called back by a b.s. chop block penalty.

Usually a player that you might not expect to have a really good game does, and I was wondering who you thought that might be, so when I watch the game I can keep an eye on him.

Most people, myself included, just assumed he was gone after last year. Not only for the 49ers, but we figured he’d want to move on as well. However after Harbaugh was hired and the feelings he had more people were receptive to it.

It was certainly still split (and even now can be a polarizing topic) but a lot of people trusted Harbaugh so much that they were ready to at least give him the benefit of the doubt. And especially after he went out and drafted a guy he thought he could mold in Kaepernick. We hoped Alex would be a stop-gap at the very least, weren’t a ton of options out there.

If there was no lockout I think it was still 50/50 that he’d have been back. I think they’d have traded for a backup QB though ( Josh Johnson or Hoyer or Flynn ) instead of trading up in the draft.

Pretty much 95% of the fan base was 100% on board with whatever Harbaugh decided. The other 5% didn’t want Harbaugh in the first place because he rubs some people the wrong way.

Draft: 1. Kendall Wright 2. Trumaine Johnson

part of the biggest confusion is that people think he's played at 2005 level for the last 6 years

when that wasn’t the case. The 49ers promoted a tight ends coach to OC after Norv left and it basically destroyed the offense, and was followed by Smith messing up his shoulder.

Over the past 2 seasons or so he’s always played at a kind of average level. Including a bunch of comebacks that did not result in wins.

I maintain that the defense is the biggest surprise of the season, just how good they were was shocking. The last few years 49er fans have talked about getting a top 10 defense, well they watched a handful of starters leave and get replaced by FAs and draft picks and now they have one.

Draft: 1. Kendall Wright 2. Trumaine Johnson
FA: Smith, Morgan, Brooks, Rogers, Snyder

Alex D Smith. My God, where to we begin

Myself. I thought he was gone. Figured San Diego to reunite with Norv Turner in his hometown and backup Rivers. Alex Smith is not a normal person and felt that he could accomplish his mission. Once I heard he was back, I was back on board with Smith. He was our quarterback so I hoped for the best. His best was 8-8 and possible improvements that could allow him to comeback with an offseason to prepare him to take the steps to make 13-3 and advance to the Championship game. He was obviously a year early.
I knew Smith had the talent, but figured he was too shellshocked. My guess would be the Rich Gannon route of sitting on the bench, get his courage back and be an older vet that could read a defense and deliver. I would joke that Harbaugh would correct all of Smith’s problems by telling him his shoes were too tight all along or that his grip on the ball was wrong, something simple that our simple coaches never caught. I was 100% correct there. Smith never had trust. Once he got the trust he believed in himself and just played football. Smith would always overthink. Many have argued that he has played like this since last year, but I disagree. Physically, yes. He could make some throws but he still has glaring weaknesses. But the guy has mental toughness that has developed into a field general that has everyone on board.
This does not make Alex a superstar or elite quarterback. Just a guy that can kick your butt and not give a damn about it. Its like a talented Jim Harbaugh.

Alex Smith

is still only 27, so he is relatively young. I think with the year he produced this year that he will at least get a chance to see what he can do with a full offseason and training camp. If he keeps getting better, and keeps putting up 13-3 seasons I believe he will be the QB that stays and Kaepernick will be lost in the shuffle or traded for draft picks after his rookie contract is done.

by Dukeston1 on Jan 19, 2012 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know, maybe a few years down the road here.

It will depend on how Kaepernick progresses and how well Alex plays. I think Alex will get a new three or four year contract after his performance this season, so it will be interesting to see how it plays out. Alex is like 27, so I’m not overly concerned about finding a replacement right now.

We have won must wins in bad weather.

and it is funny but in the past when we have won the toss we have picked the direction we want to be trowing and kicking at the end of the game the direction wind will be blowing at the end of the game. This makes the wind work against the other team when they kick/pass.

In this game if there are strong winds i that as an equal problem for the kickers/punters of both teams.

I hate Bayless

but I’d say that any single team in NFL history that on-sides kicks when they don’t need to, or runs any kind of trick play to gain an advantage, is scared, has no idea what to do so reaches deep into the playbook to do something. It screams that you’re desperate to get something going.

So yea, and that even applies to the Packers last week against the Giants. Tho maybe scared is the wrong word for it. Desperate is probably more fitting.

Were the Saints scared in Super Bowl XLIV?

They had an onside kick to start the second half, and in my opinion it won them the game. It shifted all the momentum in their favor. Trick plays do not mean that a team is scared – it means that they saw an opening they thought they could exploit and took a risk. When we played the Rams, for instance, we thought that they might not be too attentive on field goals, so we had Crabtree never leave the field and line up right next to the sideline for an easy touchdown. Were we scared of the Rams? No. We saw the opening, and took advantage.

That made Bass a distant memory. He was one of two guys that got replaced on the OL this year and now we are on the verge of the SB.

The consensus in NY has been that he’s nothing special, but he has been dinged up.

I think that sums it up pretty nicely.

I would like to commend this 49ers team for...

…..being the most likeable since John Brodie played for you. I know it’s probably just because you’ve been lousy for a decade but there is no one I have a serious dislike for ….. yet.

Good luck and may the best team win.

I have to admit I kind of hate carlos rogers

just cuz he was a redskin. Kinda a bad reason, but there ya go.

Go Giants!

I deal with Redskin nonsense on a daily basis. I always felt bad for him because he was always better than how they treated him. He deserved better than that joke of a franchise and fan base.

I was happy about the signing immediately, but I certainly didn’t expect him to be in the Pro Bowl.

they ran him out of washington, saying he'd never succeed

so really, liking Carlos Rodgers is another way you can hate the redskins.

Honestly I wasn't alive when he was the owner.

But everything I heard gave me the idea that he was the best owner possible.

Roger Craig should be in first.

Hate to say it but the owner going in before the player is really lame.

Has another running back ever led the league in receptions?

Rice did it twice, Clark and Craig did it once. Most players would give a body part to be that big a part of the offense.

He redefined the FB and RB positions so now it is expected that those players catch the ball.

He probably deserves it…built a dynasty that changed the game…not sure what he did outside the Niners org though in terms of league leadership and such

Must be some quality discussion going on here, guess no niners fans are predicting massive blowout wins like those arrogant cheeseheads

Giant only get 2, not 3

Fan editorial(s) from Saints-Niners game

Did anyone else read these editorials/letters from Saints fans who attended last weekend’s games at Candlestick?

Obviously I’m sure this behavior is not representative of the entire 49ers fanbase, or perhaps it is simply isolated.

http://blog.sfgate.com/opinionshop/2012/01/17/should-49ers-fans-be-concerned-about-hooliganism/?tsp=1

That’s the link to one such letter to the editor and therein is a link to a second such story from a Saints fan.

I’m just curious, as the writer of this letter mentions it as well, though he rejects it, but has the Niners’ playoff absence during the last decade contributed to these fans being rabid and so well mis-behaved?

Is this guy and any other Saints fan being too sensitive? Should fans in general expect this type of experience when visiting an opponents stadium? Just curious and y’all’s thoughts…..

Went to the Niner game as a Saints fan and got yelled at?

Really?

Who knew?

I really feel for the 2 guys that got shot back east for being 49er Fans.

Every stadium has pockets of ass****s

It’s an unfortunate part of professional sports these days, especially with the heavy involvement of alcohol.

At the point when someone gets threatened it’s time to go talk to the nearest security.

When I read that yesterday my first thought was that this person was probably a bit on the sensitive side ( there’s video of 49er fans getting heckled and having ice balls thrown at them at a Philly game last year and they take it in jest ). And that they probably do not go to many football games, if ever, because people are going to curse. A lot.

But as I said, once someone threatens you, immediately to the nearest security officer. That has no place anywhere.

Yeah, there's no way this is true.

If he can still play, he’ll be back. I doubt he’ll be back with the Colts, but if he’s healthy, we have not seen the last of the elder Manning.

I'm just a simple Niners fan trying to make my way in the universe.

Smart thing for the Colts would be

if Peyton is able to play then have Luck be the backup at least one year and learn from Peyton.
