Nice job here by the NFL defending referee Bill Leavy. They still didn't explain, however, he could so obviously get this wrong. Thankfully it ended up not mattering.

what a scam outfit

the guy fumbled before any part of his body hit the ground. the replay showed that.

the OSi roughing call was a joke and Ware made the first down but was marked back at least 3 feet.

the whole idea about losing your challenges I assume affected Coughlin not challenging that terrbile mark.

BTW Eli was battered late at least 2 times blatantly…..

overall the officiating was a F….Plain and simple. Goodel is a total hack….

the ware play

Wasn’t that inside of the 2 minute warning? So it would be up to the ref upstairs to review the play.

by Ualtar on Jan 16, 2012 5:38 PM EST up reply actions

one more thing

even if TC won the challenge on the Ware play, since he had lost the fumble challenge the Giants would have been out of challenges. That is pretty early in the game to have no challenges left, especially considering how bad the officials were calling the game.

Who you gonna believe?

The NFL or your lying eyes?

Why not tell us which official ruled him down in the first place? Because the side judge who is closest clearly thinks it’s a fumble.

Takeaway from the Osi flag...

Just kill the other teams QB. You are going to get flagged either way. Might as well lead with your helmet and drive him into the ground. Then wave Tuck over for a spear.

because: 1) I was pretty sure we would win at that point anyways

Makes the league look really bad when a ref blatantly blows a call like this. How does this guy still get playoff games?

by bomber1734 on Jan 16, 2012 5:25 PM EST reply actions

Unbelievable pile of steaming crap

So basically rather than admit a mistake you will compound his call by LIEING.

Based upon this interpretation Ballard was definitely down in the first game. His calf was clearly touching the end zone.

This reeks of Tim Donaghy….

by Madhops on Jan 16, 2012 5:31 PM EST reply actions

Totally agree

We’ve seen game officials involved with Betting Scandals in Basketball and Soccer. Would it be shocking to see them in the most bet sport in the league? How bout favoring the team that was the sharp favorite…Of course I can’t prove it, but you at least need to make the refs come out and explain themselves…Perrira used to go on Mike and Mike, but now its basically silence from the NFL.

by SES 84 on Jan 16, 2012 10:38 PM EST up reply actions

It was obvious that the player was losing control of the ball

before any part of his body touched the groung.
What an explanation, using rules from their Rule Book.
Didn’t explain anything.
Even their own boss said they blew the call, and anyone who knows anything about football KNOWS that this call was blown.
This was a fumble, and continues to prove (to me) that certain teams get ‘help’ from the zebras.

Explanation is great and all

but it doesn’t translate to the play in question.

Had his calf been down, I would except this, however it was not.

Had there not been sufficient video evidence to overturn the call, I would except this, however, there was.

So what exactly was the point in releasing this info? Do they think the tape of this play magically disappeared and we can’t look at it?

I was taught at a young age that when i messed up, own up to it. These clowns should do the same.

It's a subliminal translation

If your going against the so-called favorites of the world, the rules change. One example is that the ref redefine the human anatomy and included the calf as an extension of the knee?!!! Then again, the ref may be a part-time proctologist?

Complete and Utter BS

I just watched the replay. The play should have never been changed on the field. The original call was a fumble. One official changed the call ruling it was down by contact. Then why didn’t the ref blow his whistle? If you rule a player tackled you blow the whistle. No whistle was blown.

I'm not a conspiracy guy

I also rarely blame the refs. In this case I’m convinced an official changed the ruling on the field because GB already challenged a call and won. If they lose this challenge they’re out of challenges for the rest of the game.

That's what makes the NFL's explanation complete crap.

They need to address that the refs overturned their own call during a commercial so the Giants had to challenge. If it was questionable then they should have let the Packers challenge the original ruling on the field. They basically replayed the play and changed the call on their own.

Finley cited a Giants defense — playing with a palpable sense of urgency — for disrupting the Packers’ rhythm and never letting up. “(Defensive end Jason) Pierre-Paul was pushing me — and our offense is timing,” Finley said. “Then he’d go rush. I’d say a dozen times. I got pushed on the ground two or three times.”

“JPP was pushing me.” Haha

To be honest

That probably explains why JPP wasn’t around the qb all that much. He’s usually beating around the backfield but if he stayed in the line a little bit more to slow Finley down I’m all for it. Hopefully we do the same thing against Vernon Davis.

But JPP is a Manster, you bump him, but it’s like hitting a wall

Defense is much more coordinated now, they are taking advantage of each others strengths. A bump off JPP, a chuck from Boley, it gets hard to get on route

See what a great guy LT really was? He was trying to help Joe out. Making sure that, if he ever ran the wildcat, and went out wide, caught a pass, got smacked, and lost the ball, that his calf would touch the ground even though his knee was 5 inches above the ground.
One more reason to love LT.

What's just as bad

is that they changed the call on the field, probably because they heard the crowd react negatively to the replay (as they always do, no matter what they see), as you could hear right before FOX cut to a commercial, and they were worried that they would force McCarthy to use his second challenge in the first quarter.

This was great

From the comments on the NFL statement:

we know Bil Leavey is a horrible official, you know Bill Leavey is a horrible official, the world knows our officials in general have been horrible all year(or over the course of the last several years) bur Leavey will likely be doing another Super Bowl and we want you to think his obvious incompetence was, in fact, supreme competence in regards to rule interpretation

In other words, the NFL is lying. The emperor really does have clothes. Not.

It is like when politicians protest too much about being innocent. How do you know they are lying? Their mouths are moving.

All the Giants should play like Mark Bavaro.
TQ, DD and KMac Must Go!
TC, PF, KG, will stay but should go for the long term good.
It is equally worthless when people are always optimistic or always pessimistic. Either way I take their opinion with a pound of salt because I know they only have one setting. I post my own thoughts, not what either side wants to read.

I don't like this quote from Cruz
“Just how we played against New Orleans and how we played against San Fran, definitely, it works out in our favor a little bit,” Cruz said when asked about facing the Niners as opposed to the Saints. “That we are able to get San Fran as opposed to New Orleans just because of how we feel about (the 49ers) and we understand that we have a good chance of winning that game. We felt like we had a chance to win. We understood that if we saw them again, it could potentially be a different outcome and we wanted that opportunity.”

Cruz should’ve said that the Giants would feel confident against any opponent; it doesn’t matter who it is. Harbaugh gets to tell his team that the Giants think the 49ers are a weaker team than the Saints, which they just beat. He gets to tell them that the Giants probably think this is going to be a cupcake game. Cruz’s comments are gas to the flame.

Rolle said it much better
“I could care less about how hostile it is,” Rolle said. “When you’re at home, you want to bring ‘em to their feet. When you’re away, you want to bring ’em to their knees.”

“It doesn’t matter who we play,” he added. “At this point, the way we are playing ball, if we go out there and take care of things during the week, it doesn’t matter who you put in front of us. You put an all-star team in front of us, we are going to go out there and be the best that we can be on that Sunday.”

His comments show that he’s confident but he doesn’t disrespect the 49ers in the process.

Red face test

I want someone from the NFL on camera defending this call, while a non-moron reviews the video in slow motion. Did Leavy actually see the same video that I have on DVR? If not, why not? If so, how can anyone say it was the correct call without a red face?

The Osi call was crap, but it wasn’t reviewed; snap judgments can be wrong. If you’ve ever refereed you know what I mean. Last GB game, the Ballard TD was 50/50, as was Driver stepping out of bounds before his “TD” catch. But this kind of error should not happen on a reviewed play.

BTW, I know this is the current rule but it seems that the burden of proof for overturning a call shouldn’t be as great if there was disagreement among the field refs on the correct call. Instead of “incontrovertible visual evidence” it should be something less. Maybe the competition committee needs to add a “Leavy” rule next year…

How else do you explain the two glaring misses by the refs in the Falcons game. The terrible spot and missing that they had 12 men in the huddle. TC had to tell them there were 12 men in the huddle. Then a fumble that’s called a fumble by a ref that saw when it happened only to be ruled not a fumble by a ref on the other side of the field, then to make matters worse they reviewed it and still got it wrong. Now they feeling the heat because everyone is suspicious

If the officials got those calls right, the Giants could well have held the packers to under 10 points. The national media would then be all over Giants jock even more than they are now, and the giants would probably be picked to be the SB favorite. And you never, ever want that.

Go Giants!

Giants defense sounds scary here...
In the past four games, the Giants have outscored their opponents 121-50. Opponents have been limited to 22 points in the postseason, and that total might need an asterisk. The Falcons scored two points when Giants quarterback Eli Manning was called for illegally grounding a ball in the end zone, and the Packers’ two touchdowns came on drives that were kept alive by questionable officiating calls.

I have to admit that I am a bit shocked about this turn around. Someone flipped a switch and it’s been fun to watch.

so here's the thing, conspiracy theorists

Conspiracy 101:

1. The NFL is about making money.
2. Money is about scoring big points, and story lines.
3. Nawlins and GB are gone now.

If the conspiracy theories about the NFL and team favoring are correct, the Giants should benefit from it. They are the more explosive, point-scoring team, and they have more “story lines” — Eli winning another SB vs. Peyton, SB XL2 rematch, etc, SB vs ravens rematch…

For the record I am a rabid ref-hater. I despise officials and I think they suck. I DO believe the NFL has a vested financial interest in the success of some teams, that’s a fact. however I do NOT believe that there is an organized conspiracy, just a subtle sunconscious lean towards the success of certain teams.

Yea but Harbaugh vs Harbaugh might be what they want

for their SB so I would expect them to be pulling for the Niners this week.

by Landeta on Jan 16, 2012 11:05 PM EST up reply actions

This...yes.

Next in line would be a SB42 rematch. If the Harbaughs didn’t have a chance the NFL brass would be creaming their shorts to give BB and TB a chance to avenge that loss. Wouldn’t matter though because the SB42 loss was epic due to them being undefeated.

I disagree

as a former member of the media, I think that SBXL2 rematch is the best story, better than the Bro-Bowl. But, this is just our opinions.

For TVs sake, I think the matchups rate as follows:

NY-NE
BAL-SF
NY-BAL
NE-SF

I'd like to add...

1. Big Ben shot JFK
2. Flozell Adams was behind 9/11
3. The moon landing was filmed in Jerry Jones’ backyard.
4. Biggie and Tupac are living in Bolivia with Matt Dodge.

I for one feel vindicated today

Everyone was all “oh, don’t be a crybaby about the refs”

and I was all "The refs are changing games with mistakes:

and everybody was “don’t whine”

Look at the news today. ITS ALL ABOUT HOW BAD THE REFS ARE AND HOW THEY CHANGE OUTCOMES.

APOLOGIES SEAHAWKS FANS.

I HAVE TO WRITE IN ALL CAPS: F REFS. THEY GAVE GREEN BAY 14 POINTS IN BOTH GAMES WE PLAYED.

That's racist yo!

Team Ghost: Manningham, Sintim, Beckum, Barden, JPP, Anvil, Ross

"But even if they do that [win the NFC East], once they get into the playoffs, they're going to see teams such as the Saints and the Packers and the 49ers, who started them on their current losing streak. And when they come up against teams like that, they're not going to have enough to hang with them, and there's not going to be anything they can do. " -- Dan Graziano

All they did is explain a rule here that doesn't apply

It’d be the same as if they said:
RE: Bill Leavy on the supposed Greg Jennings’ fumble:
Section 114 article 7(b) clearly states that when a player steps out of bounds and is the first to touch the ball during a punt it shall be deemed illegal contact and a 15 yard penalty is to be applied on the next play.

Sec. 148

Its funny

They Helped them in the first game. If i recall, 2 calls that ended in TDs for GB occured in first game, and they trieed to do it to the Giants again, only, GB couldnt hold up their end. Its AMAZING that the Giants even had a chance considering they were playing against 18 GB players… albeit 7 were in black and white.
