Giants Players Meet The Press, And Antrel Rolle Delivers

Leave it to safety Antrel Rolle to deliver the best line of the day in the various player press conferences held by the New York Giants today as they begin to look forward to facing the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday at Candlestick Park.

"I've always expected greatness from this team although we didn't do it week-in and week-out throughout the season," Rolle said.

Here are a few more comments from the Giants.

"This is exciting. This is where you want to be. We always talk about finishing and playing your best football at the end of the season. That's what we're doing now. We're playing great football on both sides of the ball. We have to continue to do that. We're playing smart. We can't turn the ball over. Hopefully our defense can continue to get some turnovers for us and continue to play well. If we're going to continue this thing, it's going to take both sides of the ball playing to the best of their ability." -- Eli Manning

"We are riding a lot of momentum, a lot of confidence. It's great to play with that. We're a scary team right now because of the confidence we're playing with and the amount of integrity and amount of passion we are playing with right now. At every position, not just Eli or myself or the defense. Everyone is playing with that same confidence and intensity. We are a scary team right now." -- Victor Cruz

"We have to finish what we started. We started the season on a good note. It's not how you start, it's how you finish. That's been one of the things that Tom has said to us from day one, as soon as we stepped in here for training camp. Finish, make sure we finish everything we do." -- Michael Boley

its more than that

we had to capitalize on the turnovers. thats something we didnt do real well during the season. we were something like 30% for converting turnovers into points during the reg season. thats not a good #. we did a great job of turning them into points yesterday.

Quick Question...

Is anybody going to be held accountable for or have to answer for that terrible officiating? Is it just going to get ignored like it does every week? I mean why are they allowed to continuously do such a piss poor job? I wish I could go to work every day, make idiotic, blatantly bad decisions and just chalk it up to human error!

by leviathen2003 on Jan 16, 2012 5:09 PM EST reply actions

The NFL explained it like this...
Even though the Giants won the game by 17 points, Leavy’s indisputable failure to find that indisputable evidence existed to reverse the non-fumble finding has made a major stir. The league has explained the decision.

"Rule 7, Section 2, Article 1 of the NFL Rule Book (page 35) states: ‘An official shall declare the ball dead and the down ended: (a) when a runner is contacted by a defensive player and touches the ground with any part of his body other than his hands or feet,’" the league said in a statement emailed to PFT by NFL spokesman Greg Aiello. "So by rule, if Jennings’ calf was on the ground prior to the ball coming loose, he is down by contact. Contrary to what was suggested during the game, there is no need for the runner’s knee to be on the ground."

That’s a not-so-subtle slap at FOX, whose broadcasters (including rules analyst and former NFL V.P. of officiating Mike Pereira) believed that Leavy had committed a pretty big blunder. In the end, Leavy’s decision apparently flowed from uncertainty based on the video as to whether Jennings’ calf was on the ground before he lost possession of the ball.

"Rule 15, Section 9 of the Rule Book (page 98) governs instant replay reviews and states: ‘All Replay Reviews will be conducted by the Referee on a field-level monitor after consultation with the other covering official(s), prior to review. A decision will be reversed only when the Referee has indisputable visual evidence available to him that warrants the change,’" the league said in the statement.

"Referee Bill Leavy conducted the instant replay video review and determined that there was no indisputable visual evidence to warrant reversing the on-field ruling of down by contact. As a result, the ruling on the field stood."

No mention of how the refs reversed themselves during the commercial. If that rule was the reason for the call then they should have left the fumble ruling on the field and let GB challenge to get it reversed. So, this explaination is absolute bullcrap.

by Bobbiblue on Jan 16, 2012 5:40 PM EST up reply actions

What really pisses me off

Is that they insist on the utmost behavior from players and coaches.

When a ref totally screws up, they cover it.

And BTW, the Fox guys did mention the calf and that it was not on the ground.

Total crapola and the league should be ashamed. The ref made a major mistake and they refuse to admit it.

Turds.

All the Giants should play like Mark Bavaro.
TQ, DD and KMac Must Go!
TC, PF, KG, will stay but should go for the long term good.
It is equally worthless when people are always optimistic or always pessimistic. Either way I take their opinion with a pound of salt because I know they only have one setting. I post my own thoughts, not what either side wants to read.

by UnknownJintsFan on Jan 16, 2012 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with you

that the behavior policy and all that is taken to a new high level now. Especially with injuries and bad behavior. Its damn shameful to see refs screw up and the NFL cover their a**. It’s become parents and kids. What the NFL should do is admit the fault which I dont know if they did and then change that replay system. Its embarassing that we had to challenge first of all in EVEN AFTER that they still call it no fumble. Ridiculous. A panel of replay officials or heck even Mike from fox command center can help out. One opinion vs. three opinions makes a difference. I heard that the referee was only alotted 60 seconds to review the play and in that time he was only able to catch five of the six camera angles. The sixth being the best one showing the fumble. Another flaw: use the best angle duh.

They speak one voice..and the credit goes to a coach who is a committed, relentless fan of his players..You can kick when he’s down all you want but he always gets up..Winning is all he cares about…and that attitude is reflected when the players speak..This team is on fire right now..I saw him smiling like a proud Dad last night…It was heartwarming to see that..I enjoyed watching the team win against all odds, but that was a special thing watching Tom Coughlin on the sideline…That man deserves alot of credit..He’s not a student of the game, he teaches it..We are extremely lucky to have him as head coach.

WHAT A GAME

Just watched my tape of the game!!! Thanks to my friend’s parents, who have Sky TV and so taped it for me. Had to get the old VCR out of the loft and connect it up so I could watch it tonight. That game had just about everything – what a feeling it is when your team is the underdog and goes out and beats the best guys in the league on their own turf. The cornerbacks seemed to be doing well – you can’t see what’s happening back there on TV most of the time, but Rogers was scurrying around unable to find open receivers for most of the game. I didn’t see Jordy Nelson catch many passes (one?) Antrel Rolle looked good; great coverage on Greg Jennings on that potential touchdown pass down the sideline.

Right now I really want to go and buy plane tickets to the U.S. so I can go and see the NFC Championship game; I’ll see how I feel about that idea in the morning, though.

Remember in the offseason when we had lost all those players, Philadelphia had bought some amazing talent, and then they went and made it even worse by signing Steve Smith? Remember how that felt? It’s funny how things work out.

This is what being a sports fan is all about.

I honestly have no idea how the team can play like that after playing the way they did in the regular season, and I have habitually called for Coughlins head. But even i have to relent and admit there is no denying the accomplishment of the staff for what has happened lately.

I also never understood and still dont understand the Osi situation, but here it is in the postseason and he is contributing.

So in summary, I said I would kiss Coughlins grits if he got us anywhere in the playoffs this year – so I am putting on my lipstick. Of the teams left, none is more formidable than the one we just beat, so just go on and win the damn thing.

Granted, yesterday they werent as bad as they usually are, but they’ve done the last 6 Giant games so I’d hope theyre getting better. Its just a shame its so marginal considering the work they “supposedly” put in.

The Golden Age of the NFC on CBS-TV...

Around 1981 to the early 90s. When Summerall and Madden did your game it was BIG!

They called all the Big Blue playoff games during that period. Loved when Madden would just get all pumped up about midway through the 3rd quarter of a Giants-Skins regular season game and say how it had a “playoff feel” because of the intensity.

and when they started moving the pile and wearing down the defense he couldn’t contain himself.

I have to listen to philly radio

but it was the best day ever. Most eagle fans are still in denial, but I also heard more kudos for Eli and this team then ever before (going back to Parcells era). Much envy for the Giants org… regardless of the pain saying it.

I listened to WIP for a few minutes today

One host gave no credit to Eli and the Giant Defense. He insisted that if the Eagles were playing the Packers last night, it would of an Eagles win. But yes, they were very jealous.

a few quick points

First off, how tough is Eli Manning? He got blasted a few times (some of which were late) & he just shook it off like its no big deal. NEVER missed a start, & just keeps doin it.

& A little bit of kudos to the STs unit yesterday. Heads up on the recovering of 2 onside kicks. Held Packer return men in check & beside the blocked FG which already happened 4 times this season (if u include prE), they were solid yesterday.

Just looked up some stats on Fitzgerald's 2008 postseason run

He had 546 yards, 30 catches, and 7 TDs through 4 games, all NFL postseason records. IF the giants play two more games, Nicks is on pace to exceed all of those numbers except catches (he has 13 through 2 games).

Yeah, it's a real shame we only saw Fitz at his potential for a few seasons

Kevin Kolb and DJ Anderson are probably even more depressing for him, knowing what he could do with 39 year old Kurt Warner. They also had boldin on the other side, which opened things up considerably.
