Giants 37, Packers 20: Pro Football Focus Weekly Review

Let's take a quick look at the Pro Football Focus numbers from the New York Giants' 37-20 victory over the Green Bay Packers Sunday in an NFC Divisional Round playoff game.

OFFENSE

Eli Manning (+6.3)
Hakeem Nicks (+3.2)
Victor Cruz (+2.3)
Ahmad Bradshaw (+1.9)
Mario Manningham (+1.8)
Chris Snee (-1.5)
Kareem McKenzie (-2.1)
Bear Pascoe (-2.5)
David Diehl (-3.1)
Kevin Boothe (-6.0)

Valentine's View: It's a miracle that the Giants do what they do on offense with an offensive line this porous. David Baas was -1.0, giving all of the linemen negative grades. Manning makes this line look at least decent with the way he slides around, and the way he constantly gets the Giants into running plays that have a chance.

DEFENSE

Linval Joseph (+2.1)
Chase Blackburn (+1.6)
Michael Boley (+1.5)
Justin Tuck (+1.2)
Osi Umenyiora (+1.1)
Kenny Phillips (-1.1)
Corey Webster (-1.2)
Chris Canty (-1.4)
Dave Tollefson (-1.5)
Mathias Kiwanuka (-2.5)

Valentine's View: Tuck played better than his single tackle would indicate. Kiwanuka was barely on the field, playing only 22 snaps as the Giants went with more three-safety looks and with Jacquian Williams for pass coverage.

everyone who’s job is sorely blocking all blow. Except Baas who was against one of the worst NT’s in football. Meh. Yet Eli throws a gem. If we invest 4 picks in the oline, Eli can do anything.

The secondary numbers are all BS. Canty too.

Cweb was targeted more than Ross

fortunately for Ross, AR never got that pass off. otherwise, it would be a different score.

I'm actually gonna argue that Ross did what he was supposed to there.

It was a sluggo, and he jumped the slant. Bob Papa was talking about the gameplan to jump on the quick routes and prevent AR from running the WCO the way they like to… force him to his 2nd, 3rd, 4th reads and hopefully the DLine gets home.

That doesn’t change the fact that the WR was wide open and that could have been an easy TD (tho I don’t remember if there was a deep S coming across that could have impacted the play)

Pass protection looked pretty bloody good to me.

Yes, Eli took a few nasty hits, but he also had a lot of plays when he was able to go through his reads twice. I mean, we were playing a tough team, regardless of the their “defensive ranking.” When you score all the time, the other team is going to have the ball a lot.

Eli throwing in .0001 seconds =/= line being good

Eli is saving this line from being a complete and utter joke. When Eli can’t save the line on running plays they look like crap. No issue with these bad grades.

There were many plays were Eli was standing in the pocket with a halo around him, just standing there for seconds, waiting to throw to someone.

Agree

This is the hand we are dealt going into the last two games so…. but Boothe is a great super sub and should not be starting.

I actually focused on Diehl and he did not do that badly. Maybe he is an OK tackle and the replacement for McKenzie at RT. With Beatty back I would then hope that the Giants either draft a C high and move Baas to RG or start Petrus.

On D, I fully expect Osi to get his way and move on if JR can get a couple of 2nd round pix for him. I would then look at Kiwi back to DE.

They made decisions. They trust Eli to make good great decisions, and he did. How come the Pack didn’t block us with 5? They blocked us 6 and 7 on 4.

In these situations when they bring 5 against our 6, you know that time is limited. No OL blocks that for 3-5 seconds.

from PFF analysis

What makes Manning’s performance even more impressive is that he is doing it with some extremely poor play from his O-line. David Diehl (-3.1) surrendered a sack, a knockdown and two pressures in the game, but none of the five graded well, and each lineman allowed at least two pressures. The real negative standout in the game though was left guard Kevin Boothe (-6.0) who has been arguably the best player on the Giants’ line this season. Boothe had a torrid time in this game, being beaten for a knockdown and four more pressures, but also repeatedly finding his man disengaging to make tackles close to the line of scrimmage in the run game. Somehow the Giants are managing to play well above the quality of their blocking, which would be something to keep an eye on going forward in the playoffs, because there are not many sides that can sustain that.

How many times did you see Rodgers sitting back in the pocket looking for a receiver? Our defense didn’t get great pressure that’s the secondary. Couple of those runs by Rodgers was because of our secondary. Most of the dropped balls were short passes. The 1 to Finley was not gimlets fault over the middle it was Rodgers threw it out to far. Our DLine did not get pressure in that first half

8 drops is stretching it. One drop was the miscommunication between Rodgers and his WR. A second drop was good coverage by Rolle in the end zone. A third drop was a result of a hit from Grant. It was more a good play by the defender than a drop. A 4th drop was in the flat. It would have been a minimal gain of no more than 2 yards. It didn’t have a big effect on the drive.

Hey, I was right! Tolly gets no love

Its ‘cuz he’s black, isn’t it?

I don’t know how you can give anyone on that defense a negative grade. They held one of the best offenses in the history of the game to 6 points. They’ve given up an average of 7.75 points per game in our personal playoffs, 3 per game in the actual playoffs.

Ed touched on something in mentioning Kiwi's limited snaps...

We have great depth right now on defense, giving PF the luxury to rotate guys frequently and keep them fresh.

How many times did you see Tuck on the sideline on 3rd down? Not even JPP was a three-down DE yesterday. We even saw it in the defensive backfield — lots of different combinations were trotted out. Same goes for the LBzez — Kiwi is going to get a lot less snaps against a team that throws as much as GB (especially with them playing from behind). I expect to see more of him next week against a more conventional SF offense, with situational substitutions of Williams on 3rd down.

What I love about this deep rotation is that guys, to a man, are stepping up and making big plays when their number gets called, or at least making their presence felt.

Stats done lie

Dead last in yards, TD’s, 3rd down conversions. Sounds like a guy that rode the coat tails of his defense and special teams and running game to me.

Are always tough on their home team QB. Don’t dismiss him too quickly. You could do a lot worse. Giant fans were pretty tough on Simms and Eli in the first 3 or 4 years of their careers around here.

LOL at tweet on NFL32

They were asking Did GB give the game away, or did the Giants beat them (of course they would ask this), and one guy tweeted, GB handed them this game, as usual Eli Manning was throwing inaccurately and off his back foot. I just laughed, at the fact someone actually rationally tweeted that, and at the fact they showed it on TV.

I also think Baas was worse than Boothe

but what do i know.

watching the 49ers and the Smiths this week … well, the whole Oline is a concern. plus their secondary looked damn good too.

our Defense gotta step up b/c i think this will be the toughest task for our Offense that we’ve seen all season.

by andiamo708 on Jan 16, 2012 10:18 PM EST reply actions

I agree

I am not as confident this week as I was going into Lambeau. We are facing a team that is also peaking. As much as I liked our D this week, their D is better.
Our edge is Eli and the passing game. But if they get a big rush on Eli, we will be in deep trouble.

Go Giants!

by ronjohnson on Jan 16, 2012 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

they say you couldn't get to brees

but i don’t think SF got the memo, 3 sacks ain’t all that but they hit him 11 times.

this is going to be a really tough task if you ask me. and it’s hard to go short w/ the passing game b/c their LBs are so good.

I think this is one of those game where you try to keep them honest w/ the running game but you MUST go up top on their DBs b/c if you don’t everything will get forced underneath and like you said: trouble.

I think however w/ a 22 type formation w/ both back in the back field we can max protect and still try to get a favorable matchup w/ Ballard or even Pascoe for quick easy yards. maybe even a RB if he doesnt’ have to block. I guess KG will have to feel them out on D but those plays get easier as well if you test them early.

yes Boley and Williams

at Lb instead of 3-4 type plodders

by lueeluee on Jan 17, 2012 2:40 AM EST reply actions

Points will be at a premium, but

I think the same gameplan employed against GB on defense with a few Tweeks will keep it winnable. Kiwi will be in a lot more to stop Gore. Williams and Boley will be responsible for Davis. Our corners on their WRs are a good matchup. And Osi is back. Expect to see a lot of Osi, Tuck, JPP on third down.
If we can shut down the run, we are in good shape. What I fear is our own running game. Baas is awful. He couldn’t push my grandmother out of the way. If Eli faces 3rd and long all day….ouch. This isn’t the GB defense. KG better get pretty creative.
