Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Fire Tom Coughlin And Perry Fewell And Jerry Reese

Tom Coughlin needs to go. Look how many dud games the Giants have had this year. They never show up for a big game and Coughlin will never lead this team to the playoffs again! I mean they lose to the Seahawks at home! And the Redskins, not once but twice. They lost to Vince Young in a huge game. Vince Freaking Young! V.Y. is awful.

And then Perry Fewell. What else can you say? Just terrible. The Giants defense is a sieve and they are completely healthy! There are absolutely no problems missing from the defensive secondary and they communicate as well as the people at the Tower of Bable (thanks guy, fire my spelling too!)

These knuckleheads must go.

And then that Jerry Reese. What does he know about signing free agents. Michael Boley? Come on man this guy will never make a big play. Too much money for Antrel Rolle, and Chris Canty is he even on the team?

And then he drafted Jacquian Williams. Who is this guy? What a wasted pick.

Star-divide

Sound familiar? Well, guess what people. We are ALL Idiots. Every one of us have questioned Tom Coughlin and/or Perry Fewell (yes you have, don't lie. If not Coughlin definitely Fewell) and people go crazy over the draft. I didn't even mention eveyone's favorite punching bag Jason Pierre Paul (he's pretty good too!)

Yes the Michael Boley signing looked bad at a time, but when he was out of games the Giants defense was so much different (and worse) without him that we see is true value. Chris Canty took awhile to get going but has been unheralded this year. Antrel Rolle, all this guy has done is show leadership (even if it's through the wrong venue like the media) and play versatile. He has played nickel cornerback, free safety, strong safety, linebacker/s hybrid. And has just made plays without complaining.

If this season has taught me anything it's that well, we're all idiots and should just defer to the masters. Perry Fewell has had a Spags like turnaround here. Coughlin still pushes the right buttons and Jerry Reese is a master.

Lets go Big Blue.

Question for anybody reading

How do you guys feel about Mike Lupica from ESPN radio?
The reason I’m asking is because I’m amazed such an annoying person can be broadcast on such a popular (yet, admittedly substance-less) radio network. Maybe I’m the only one that cringes at the sound of his fake laugh.

But to my credit. P.F. had his head up his arse for 14 weeks. I am justified to question him.

I cop the same plea

I lost faith in Fewell. Maybe return of injured players made the difference. That’s part of it, but I still think he finally made adjustmentst to fit the system to the players maybe at TC’s orders.

still not reaching it's potential?

They have given up 48 combined points in their last four games and you can argue that 14 of the points yesterday were greatly helped out by calls by the referees (the fumble/non fumble/non fumble call) and the Osi Umeinyora call.

They migh tnot be at their absolute best, but pretty close.

"...not reaching its potential."

It’s sounds weird after the latest stretch of wins, but I agree. The D has the potential to play even better than it has recently.
My concern remains the OL. Their protection of Eli is no more than satisfactory, but good enough to win because Eli is an elite QB We haven’t really shown a consistent ability to run the ball. Yesterday those late runs by B & J were more a result outstanding individual effort by the runners taking advantage of a D that had its spirit destroyed than a powerful OL exerting its will.
Once again, (it can’t be said often enough) kudos to Pat Flaherty

and I wrtoe this down earlier too

But the play of Jacquian Williams has been terrific and it’s helped. And Justin Tuck coming back from the dead helps a lot too. Osi was hurt as well

Chase blackburn settled things down in the middle

Even when the defense was playing poorly they were still forcing a lot of turnovers, they just didn’t have the talent at times I think to keep people out of the end zone.

The fixing of the complexity of the defense also helps.

Don’t get me wrong – this is a good post. A needed post.

But nagging questions remain.
Coughlin loses games he should not
Perry lost his D in the middle of the season
JR is better than most but gaps still exist (LB)

Still, these guys are winning and that is the ultimate metric. I have always been on the JR bandwagon but criticizing TC is something I’ve done a lot of. Not now. His flaws are still flaws but he has this team ready to play when it counts and that makes up for a lot of issues.

Progression of rookies

A lot of it has to do with the resiging of Chase Blackburn, and the progression of rookies, especially Jacuiqan Williams, who was a liablity at times, but has put it together at times.

The team was also decimatd with injuries, Tuck was lifeless and Osi was out.

The defense was giving up a lot of poitns, however, and I wrote this before the Cowboys game.

The defense had caused a LOT of turnovers. A lot. And last year they lead the league in turnovers.

For me, Killdrive is a love-hate relationship

In his offenses, Eli has become a top 10 QB for the last 4 years and a top 5 QB this year not to mention the offense being top 10 in the NFL in yards, points, etc. I dont know if this is Killdrives play calling or Eli Manning’s brilliance and the talent of his WRs. Then Killdrive goes conservative when we are up by 10 and shows the defense what we will do depending on which back is in the backfield, down and distance, and personel on the line. As for Fewell, I dont know what he did to these guys that Jets game, but we have been on fire since then. Why he couldnt do that in the middle of the season when our boys looked LOST against drew brees is beyond me. Hopefully he keeps it up next season (if he isnt hired by anyone else).

I have had questions about how JR has constructed this team. I still have questions going forward, but as of right now the Giants are playing well. Still doesn't change the fact that Canty is being paid like Wilfork

Wilfork received about $10 million more in signing bonus ($18 to 8.5), but they both received their share. So now, the only thing basically remaining on the contract for Wilfork and Canty is their base salaries (disregarding workout bonuses, etc):

Canty: 2012: $6 million, 2013: $6.25 million, 2014: $6.5 million
Wilfork: 2012: $4.5 million, 2013: $6.5 million, 2014: $7.5 million

There’s absolutely no way that Canty is on WIlfork’s level.

Don’t give me the excuse that Jerry Reese had to overpay for him.
I understand for Antrel Rolle. There were team(s) willing to pay Antrel $. But tell me, who was willing to give Canty that type of money? The Redskins dropped out of the bidding once they signed Haynesworth. The Packers didn’t want to invest a whole lot in Canty.

Many Giants fans put forth the argument that Canty occupied blockers and made Jay Ratliff and DeMarcus Ware better.
WTF?!!!! Is this even a valid argument? Ratliff and Ware, especially Ware, are dominant at their position regardless of whether or not Canty was there are DE for them. Tell me, how was Ware starting from the 2009 season on? How about Ratliff? They seem to be doing well without Canty.

What Jerry Reese essentially did was replace Cofield with Canty, NOT Cofield with Linval Joseph. Once JR gave Canty that contract, Cofield was out the door. He wouldn’t be getting a new contract from the Giants, and that’s exactly what happened.

Truth be told, I’ve been a proponent of Cofield and I’d rather have him (more productive player, both in the pass and run) than Canty.

With that said, Canty’s been fine. But his contract is a head-scratcher, to say the least.

JPP, Nicks, Cruz, and KP are all in line to get paid

JPP is a free agent in 2015, so he’s a while away. Although I assume that at the rate that he’s going, Reese may want to give him a contract extension, instead of competing for him in free agency.

Nicks becomes a FA is 2014. He’s making nothing, relative to football players. In 2013, he’ll be making about $1 million.

Cruz becomes a RFA in 2013. He’ll make about 500k in 2012.

Phillips becomes a FA in 2013. In 2012, he’ll make about 900k.

I cant recall what teams it was, but there was competition for Canty

by Troy O on Jan 16, 2012 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

I strongly believe that Jerry Reese is the BEST GM in the business

However, the Chris Canty contract really baffles me.

This year, Jay Ratliff’s play has declined, which can be attributed to injuries and a new system. Remember, the way that Wade implements and Rob Ryan implements the NT are completely different. The former was a better fit for Ratliff, as he’s on the smaller size for NT’s.
But to say that last year he was garbage is wrong. His decline this year has NOTHING to do with Canty leaving.
Heck, I’ll even go a step further as to Canty’s presence not being missed by the Cowgirls. Anthony Spencer had his best season in 2009, which was after Canty left during FA. And he’s bounced back this year to have a decent season.

As far as the teams that pursued Canty are concerned, here’s the list:
Redskins, the Titans, Seahawks, 49ers, Packers, and Giants

1. The Redskins were out once they signed Haynesworth.
2. The Packers were interested, but didn’t want to give him the $ that he was looking for.
3. I’m not sure how serious the 49ers would’ve been. Remember, the previous year, they signed Justin Smith to a six year deal worth $45 million. Investing over $80 million at one position, other than QB, is A LOT. Remember, it’s not $80 million to Justin Smith and Ngata. That’s understandable. Canty is hardly on their level.
4. The Seahawks were interested, but that had Brandon Mebane and Rocky Bernard, so I don’t think they would’ve dished out $40 million.
5. The Titans were interested in Canty because they’d just lost out on Haynesworth.

by Bpeter289 on Jan 16, 2012 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

We got Bernard the same time we got Canty

Seahawks would have had a big need. IMO

Its just my point he is not worth the contract but he not killing it either.. he’s been good (which is pretty good in todays FA)

There was a lot of competition for him which drives up the price . its also Jerry’s only “questionable” call.

2009 Ratliff was killin it, last yr there was a decline and this yr poor (maybe due to Ryan)

I may not be the most noble of men but in a town of lepers, im the one with the most fingers.

by Troy O on Jan 16, 2012 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

Good point on the Seattle Seahawks

But then that point further strengthens my point.

1. First off, was DT that BIG of a need for us?
Once we signed Benard, that means that we had Cofield, Fred Robbins, and Jay Alford on the roster. Alford is only in there for depth purposes, but a rotation of Cofield, Robbins, and Benard seems pretty solid.

2. This is my main contention:
Why was Canty given 6 years, $42 million?

I understand that certainly market forces make us overpay.
But giving him $42 million means that you think Canty’s a good/very good player. How so?

For argument’s sake, let’s use LBZ as an example. And there are three free agents: Curtis Lofton, Blackburn, Keith Brooking. They also ranked in terms of skill:

So, you’d expect Lofton to get somewhere close to what Posluszny received ($42 million over 6 years, so $7 million annually if averaged)
Let’s say that Brooking signs for a 1 year deal worth $1.

You’d expect Blackburn to receive money somewhere in between but closer to Brooking than Lofton.
But let’s say that Blackburn receives a contract that’s worth $5 million annually.

You can tell me market forces drove up the price and etc, etc, but you still can’t justify that.

In essence, what I’m trying to get at is, how the heck did team(s) think Canty was a good/very good player?
He’s not. He’s a decent player.

Combine that with the fact that we have a gluttony at the defensive tackle position at that time, there was no need to overreact.

Canty rules

great monster push up the middle.

It’s not all DEs. They can’t do their job without good or great DTs. Canty is why our DEs can do what they do.

Great signing.

What you're trying to say is that our DE's are great because of Canty

Tuck was great before Canty came. Arguably, his best season was in 2008.
Osi was an established veteran before Canty came aboard.
And I believe that JPP would’ve been great with or without Canty.

I don’t disagree with your notion that DE’s can’t do their jobs without DT’s. That’s 100% true. But to say that our DE’s are doing what they’re doing because of Canty is giving Canty WAYYYY too much credit to a mediocre/decent player.

Here’s the proof that your wrong. Canty left the Cowgirls in 2009.
Ever since then, DeMarcus Ware has still been dominant. Anthony Spencer had his best season in 2009, after Canty left, and he’s had a decent season this year.
So, did the Cowgirls really miss Canty? I’d say they were fine without him.

Now, if your reasoning was true, then that would mean that Marcus Spears has done an admirable job filling in for Canty. And seeing that production actually increased, since Spears is a FA this year, does that mean that Spears is worth $42 million?

1. I am right

2. Ratliff has suffered greatly without Canty at DE. Ask BtB

3. They had the formidable duo of Robbins and Cofield. Canty is here to replace that. Those DTs made them great, we had to continue the support.

4. Ware and Spencer (who sucks, ask BtB) are not comparable. Ratliff is.

5. Canty is a beast.

2. REALLY? Ratliff suffered greatly without Canty?

Then please explain to me how Ratliff made the All-Pro team in 2009, AFTER Canty left?
http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/cowboys/post/_/id/4665962/demarcus-ware-and-jay-ratliff-are-all-pro

3. We signed Rocky Benard, before we signed Canty. Robbins, Cofield, Bernard, and then also Canty? WTF???

4. It doesn’t change the fact that Spencer had his best two seasons in 2009 and 2012. That was AFTER Canty left.

5. How so. This guy gets pushed over almost all the time in running plays. And please don’t bring up the 4th down stops. Otherwise, we can say that based on a couple of plays. Eli Manning is the worst QB in the NFL, which would be false.

I’m looking at Canty’s career and season overall, which was been decent. He’s hardly a beast

There is no such thing. Ask our DEs this year.(1/2 Tuck 1/2 yr Osi) Bro and Robbins had 1 and 2 yrs left. Jay was a baby. you have to think JR had the insight to know .if not now then when? .

Canty is good not avg. or great.

My problem though is this. When he signed Canty, he essentially meant that Barry Cofield was no longer going to be a Giant.

We all knew that Cofield wanted a big contract, somewhere along the lines of what Canty received. And when he signed Canty, it meant that he wasn’t going to re-sign Cofield because he wasn’t going to hand out two big contracts to defensive tackles.

So, why did he do that? He essentially replaced Cofield with Canty.

The only reason why is that JR was worried about Cofield’s knees. So far, he’s proven JR wrong, which is something hard to do.

Making it to the All-Pro and making it to the Pro-Bowl are two different things. I hope you understand that.

The Pro-Bowl is merely a popularity contest, while players who actually play well are mention as All-Pros.

Take for example the parallel comparison to the NBA. Yao Ming, despite playing like sh** or being injured made to the All-Star game. However, he would never find himself on the All-NBA Team. The All-Star game is like the Pro Bowl, while the All-Pro is like the All-NBA team.

There is far, far more credence when you make it to the All-Pro team.

You overpay ONLY if there's a demand, or you perceive that there's a demand

And I’m not sure there was a team that was serious enough to dish out $40 million.

I think it was the latter and Reese overpayed when he didn’t have to.
And remember, we still had Cofield and Fred Robbins.

Oh god lets not get carried away in the OTHER direction

I posted something like this in the other thread but I guess its more appropriate here.

The Giants defense flat out sucked until very recently, when the coaches decided to stop doing stupid stuff that wasnt working. Other than Osi and for a couple games Boley, the players are the exact same ones that they started with. Giving the coaching staff too much credit here is like having someone twist your arm behind your back and when they stop, thanking them because you feel so much better.

yeah me too, actually

I am just having a hard time with the “see, everything was just fine with the coaching all along” thing going on today.

Truth be told, my personal opinion is that coaching probably doesn’t make as big a difference as us fans tend to think. All these coaches are solid X and O guys, even the ones that drive us crazy, and I’d say that in general its usually better to stay with the coaches you already have unless there is a major issue.

I think its sort of a shame we’ll probably never know if TC stepped in regarding the defensive stuff this year. I sort of suspect that he did, and if thats the case he really does deserve some credit for that because it sure didn’t look like the poor results were having any effect on the way the defensive gameplans were getting drawn up.

Rolle was just asked about it (on ESPN Network)and basically said

that it was a lot of things but mostly the secondary and the coaches are on the same page.

The team's recent performance

validates the criticism of the coaching staff earlier this year. This team did lay an egg in 4 games it should have won and had it cost them a playoff birth this staff might be gone. Thankfully they got it turned around and are now headed to the NFC Championship. This team in recent weeks is now playing like many of us thought they could which is why there was so much frustration.

by G-FANinFL on Jan 16, 2012 1:06 PM EST via mobile reply actions

every fan believes their team can excell

It’s the mark of a good coach when they actually get them to do so.

Fans will never be happy with the coach, unless they win it all. It’s in our nature to second guess and monday morning quarterback these guys. It’s part of the joy of being a fan, the “what would I have done different?” after a loss or win.

Coughlin and co. will be put right back on this same hotseat next fall. The memory of all of this will be wiped away by week 10, and there will be people on this site and many others calling for his head again… all caught up in the loss, completely forgetting that they are good coaches, that have proven it with this season.

I'm don't agree with you 100%

Of course there are areas of improvement for Gilbride.

However, I’m not so sure about canning him for a new OC.
Eli’s been entrenched in Gilbride’s system for years. And in the NFL, consistency is a key component.

That’s not to say that Eli is a system QB and he can’t flourish in other systems. But I think Gilbride and Eli are a nice fit.
If we bring in a new OC, there will be a new learning curve, albeit less for Eli than for other QB’s. Also, how well will Eli and the new OC coordinate and cooperate?

Eli and Gilbride know each other and they’ve been successful together. So why change something that is far from broken.
We’re definitely nowhere close to the Jets situation, where they HAD to make changes at OC.

I’m suggesting a new red zone system. Maybe TC has input into each play call.

It was the injuries

Injuries combined with the third hardest schedule.

The fact is that the Giants suffered more injuries on defense than all but three teams in the last decade – the 0-16 Lions and a 6-win team whose coach was fired (forget what team, it’s in a Fan Post I made).

The fact is that Giants had the third toughest schedule this year. The only teams with tougher schedules won 2 and 4 games each.

Despite this, they won 9 games and the division and were only blown out of one game all year.

The only thing that changed is players got healthy in the nick of time.

Coughlin is only having success now because he is desperate

and he changed his ways out of desperation. Its worked, but only because he was forced to become a more emotionally positive coach. Good for him, but I still think he is forced into retirement next year. They want someone younger and with a moustache.

Because Coughlin is 65 years old, he won't get a 4 year extension

perhaps not even a 3 year extension. He retires on top after winning the SB like Vermeil. Coughlin’s been a tough guy that players disliked, but he begged Justin Tuck to play harder for him, and wore his heart on his sleeve. Jim Harbaugh is a coach that can be tough yet positive, and get players to buy in with 110% effort. I like Coughlin but even he admits that he has had to change his coaching style.

coughlin, like eli, is top 5 at what he does.

Even if we had lost the dallas game, it wouldn’t change who coughlin is and how he coaches.

If the Giants lost week 17, I would still say, re-sign coughlin, he’s a great coach and a rarity in the world today.

Is it possible that since this defense is healthy

That we are actually able to play the defense we should have been playing all season? I mean if the right pieces aren’t there and you have to rely on your backups too often you will get burned regardless. We finally have all the pieces in place and Fewell is getting them in the right position to exceed. Greg Jones, Herz, Sash, JWill, Spence and Amuk have all seen snaps on defense this season fellas. Thats six rookies. SIX!!! Regardless of the scheme rookies don’t learn the NFL in one season. How many rookies see time on the field now on defense? Mainly just JWill…just saying

This doesn't change a lot for me

I expected the Giants to be doing well so I don’t go overboard with praise for people doing their jobs. I’m appreciative and I know that there are no guarantees. Nonetheless, I have always been a Reese, Boley, and Canty fan. Reese has given the Giants plenty of talent and I blamed the coaches for the team’s failures.

I was adamant that if Coughlin didn’t win a playoff game, he should be fired. All that matters is the playoffs. Once you get in, make a run. He needed to win the home playoff game and he did. He can get his extension.

As for Fewell, early last season I said that Fewell was Bill Sheridan with better players and health. If Fewell had been given the same Sheridan treatment, he would’ve been fired last year and he wouldn’t have had an opportunity to make this turnaround. It took him almost two full seasons to finally realize that his complicated, zone scheme didn’t suit the Giants personnel. Don’t talk to me about the team being healthy because Sheridan had more key injuries in 2009. I’m grateful for the adjustment but I don’t give him credit for getting his head out of the sand after two off-seasons and 30 regular season games.

Team Ghost: Manningham, Sintim, Beckum, Barden, JPP, Anvil, Ross

"But even if they do that [win the NFC East], once they get into the playoffs, they're going to see teams such as the Saints and the Packers and the 49ers, who started them on their current losing streak. And when they come up against teams like that, they're not going to have enough to hang with them, and there's not going to be anything they can do. " -- Dan Graziano
