Defense No Longer Wins Championships?
I don’t necessarily agree with Judy in this from the NY Times — the Steelers defense was woefully out of position in defending against Tebow. But if the Packers, Saints, and Pats all win this weekend and Pack or Saints win the SB, then I’m going to have to take a second look at my core belief in defense, defense defense.
don't lose faith
it’s just a fad!

It would be better said
Brute power wins championships. Often that means defense, but not always. Check the Giants of the 80s our last Super Bowl winner, etc. People think the Niners of the 80s were a finesse team, that’s a lot of crap. The Niners were one of the most physical teams in the NFL.
It’s how we can win. Does it matter if Rodgers and company scored 560 points, if our guys hit them so hard and so often that they think more about that than playing their game? How many teams put even close to our physicality on the field? If our DL beats up their OL, their QB gets a best down too.
Buts it offense also. They get turnovers, but in a closer game, with our running game going, they’ll have to do it bruised and battered. The Falcons are a good defense, they made few mistakes against us (doubling Cruz so that Nicks could make big plays). But by mid 3rd Qtr, they were not flying towards the ball as fast. That’s because our OL (more bulk than skill) got to hit people, cause AB and BJ ran thru guys chests. It affects psychologically and physically.
Anyway that’s my hope. That TC who is a big believer in power football, has a great gameplan for turning this into a slugfest, cause we have the heavyweight punchers on both sides of the line. That’s how we beat the Pats, and the Bills, and it’s how we can win Sunday.
PS if the Pats won in 2007, they would have held us to 10, and people could have said, see defense wins championships.

I agree
People always focus on defense, especially with the Giants’ SB winning teams. But look at all those teams. One of the core strengths of all those teams was a physical, over-powering, top-notch offensive line and running game. That’s one thing this Giants team has been missing. The Oline is no longer top-notch, especially in the running game. It has looked better of late but that is now a weakness for this team as far as I’m concerned and it does worry me. We need to control the tempo of the game and impose our will on offense to keep Rodgers and potentially Brees off the field.
by NYStateofMind on Jan 14, 2012 12:44 PM EST up reply actions
Our OL isn't what it has been, but
They’re all physical, and when we can run, they grind guys down. The 07 group was overrated, as soon as we lost our outside threat they struggled. They were good, but not the outstanding group that the stats said they were.

Having an outside threat
is part of having a good running game. You need that to keep defenses honest. In ’07 they were just coming together as a team and they averaged 4.6 ypc in the run game. By the ’08 season, that balooned up to 5.0 ypc. If we can get that kind of domination in the running game again this will really be a scary team.
by NYStateofMind on Jan 14, 2012 1:02 PM EST up reply actions
Especially
with the dual or even triple outside threat we now possess and the way Eli has really arrived. Honestly I don’t understand how we currently struggle so much with the run game considering how much respect defenses should give our passing game. That should tell you how sub-par the O line is now.
by NYStateofMind on Jan 14, 2012 1:05 PM EST up reply actions
Currently we dropped 170 on the 6th ranked run D
Diehl couldn’t play G, it was a disaster, and Baas going in and out totally destroyed continuity on an OL that made 3 changes.
Now with Diehl at LT and Boothe at LG (a position he played a bunch last year) we have only one new guy, he’s 10-12 games in and a season of study and practice. Voila the running game is better. Never worry about week 5 in the playoffs.

As for the 'Picks and Predictions'
I’m not surprised 95% of commentators pick the Pack to win at home, based on their 15-1 record, Rodgers (he is amazing), and the Giant’s regular season record. But I don’t believe it. I keep coming back to the championship-affecting power of defense, and our finally having a healthy D playing as one. Our offense is fine, but our defense can make their offense look worse than ours, if only by a sliver. If we don’t turn the ball over, especially if we take it away, this seems like a game we will win. But it comes back to my belief that great defense beats great offense.
95%
I tend to agree with the general opinion which that the Giants will put up a good fight, and can hang with the Packers much more so than the 15-1 vs 9-7 regular season records indicate.
I’m figuring that the Giants can pull this one out by A: Doing what they do well, well and B: Winning the battle of mistakes by a good 2-1 margin.
The Giants just need the little extra push of turnovers and good special teams and the close game can swing in their favor.
So I’m praying for that, and of course, a San Francisco win today.
I think that defense does win championships
The problem is that there are no real “shutdown” defenses anymore, because the league has veered toward offensive football. Look at history – the # of defenses with nicknames and titles attached to them are legion.
The Ravens can be bullies, but they’re losing a step. SF may be the most complete D in the tourney right now. Let’s see how that one pans out today. Gotta believe they’ll take some of the air outta Brees’ passing attack.

Yes but pundentry is also saying
that they would not be surprised if the “most dangerous” team in the playoffs pulls out a win. They need to bring that attitude on every snap on each side of the ball.
I got a GIF for that!

Compare this team to 2007
and the glaring problem with this team is a sub-par Oline. It has been getting better, but without a dominant punishing running game, I don’t think we will be able to repeat the success we had in ‘07. Granted Eli and our passing game are miles ahead of where they were in ’07 but to stop Rodgers, Brees, Brady, we need to control tempo of the game. Wear/beat the D down and into submission. I don’t like our chances if we have to shoot it out with those other QBs, no disrespect to Eli.

If we can get to 3rd and 5 or 4 running, we can accomplish the goal
TC will use power today, same as we did in 07. Doesn’t mean we won’t throw, but we will run.

Here's my core belief...
The league is set up for offenses to succeed now. Even mediocre ones can put up a lot of points. In such a league, having a great defense is truly a great asset – which is why I think we see JR placing so much stock in the D-Line year in and year out. Now, if we could only build our o-line the same way…
JPP + Cruz + Nicks + Eli
Yea, I'm excited about the next 10 years.
Yes, Yes, Yes
Do we try to win by building a team that can outscore everybody? Good luck. Rather, build a team that makes it hard for the other guys to run around like it’s an August scrimmage.
If we add some cover guys, the backers mature, and the D-line remains healthy and deep with young talent – look out for the next 5 years, NFL!
"Allie Sherman wrecked the Giants!" - my 5th grade bus driver
O Line
JR cannot keep ignoring this unit. A strong O can be as effective as a good D. We need to get the power running game back. I’d rather see Eli throwing for 4000 not 5000 yards, but still marching up and down the field like we did in ’08, wearing Ds down. But we know what Eli/Nicks/Cruz are capable of when the opportunity is there. Strong run will only open that up more. Giants would be beasts.

JR keeps ignoring this unit
HUH
2008 – Boothe starting LG
2009 – Beatty starting LT
2010 – Petrus potl starting RG
2011 – Baas starting C
Will 2012 be Brewer’s turn? If we start Beatty-Boothe-Baas-Snee-Brewer, with Petrus in reserve next year, he’ll have overhauled the OL, made it better and younger. If anything look to TC his addiction to vets kept Diehl in the middle of that line till Beatty got hurt. Diehl still isn’t playing that well, no rushes off his end, and tons of pressure off his edge, but getting him away from the right side seems to have opened up the running game.
But to say he’s ignored the unit ignores that he’s been adding pieces almost every year.

I am so tired of that assertion..Geez
Reese hasn’t ignored the line..we have a group of young linemen evolving into starters..Some people are plain nuts..I guess some people think you draft a lineman and he runs out onto the field day one..These people need to get a grip…

I’d prefer not to have projects on what I consider the most important positions on the team. Especially not at LT!!

That's on TC
Diehl was used up last year, and he stubbornly went back to him. Didn’t help us one bit. If we had stuck with Beatty in 2010 and kept Boothe at LG with Richie at C, we could have simple brought in Baas.
This is the back end problem with favoring vets that aren’t playing at a high level. You end up with big changes some times and if there’s an injury (Seubert) it upsets the apple cart. Don’t pin TCs methods on JR. And before you think I’m killing TC, there is no way on our earth he could have known ahead of time that tis would be the result. He did what he thought was best at the time.

Went back to Diehl?
Stuck with Beatty? Beatty was the unquestioned starter at LT at the start of the season. They slid Diehl inside to LG to cover up the loss of Seubert, since I believe Snee slid over to RG from LG. If they didn’t have anybody else to put in at LG that would be on JR for not having a proper plan or personnel since he has ignored this unit. Obviously Boothe or Petrus were not able to win the job from Diehl. The only reason Beatty is not playing is he’s on IR not cause TC wanted Diehl to play LT!
And also, as the unquestioned starter at LT at the beginning of the season, in that first Redskins game, Stephen Bowen made Beatty look like a chump!! Orakpo just made him look like a statue!

Beatty subbed in for a stretch mid season with Boothe at LG. They were a standout surprise. Our coaches yanked them for the send Philly game for Diehl and O’Hara. It hasn’t worked out well.

No problem
But that’s the genesis of our issues this year. They didn’t transition young guys in when they could have in 2010.
Did TC know how the CBA would go? NO
Did he know Diehl and O’Hara would basically not succeed? NO
Did it retard the progress of the lines evolution towards new guys? YES
JMHO – some of what happened this year was not predictable. I expected Diehl to be fine at LG, he was worse. I was shocked by Kareem in 2010, 2011 has been a huge drop off.

But
Do you really think they would have stuck with Diehl if Beatty was really better? I mean he had every opportunity in camp to win that job from Diehl in 2010 and he couldn’t do it. That worried me then and it still does now.
I don’t think anybody could have predicted the fast decline (Snee/McKenzie) and injuries to vets (O’Hara/Seubert) that forced their getting cut from the team, but there sure wasn’t much behind them to work with this year. That has to be JR.
by NYStateofMind on Jan 14, 2012 3:24 PM EST up reply actions
You can convince yourself of anything
If you are more comfy with vets, and in practice the guy who has done it 100k times always looks flawless and the 2nd year guy makes little missteps
Then it’s a game and a someone has to play out of position and you force it on the new guy
Poof all the proof you need. What’s disturbing, is that when Beatty got in field and outplayed Diehl, we still got more Diehl, makes me think the competition was never truly unbiased.

I agree about Diehl by the way
He’s been used up for a while. Again, that goes back to my assertion that JR has not done enough to address the OL. If Beatty was ready to step in at LT I’m pretty sure he would have been starting in 2010. That just bolsters my argument about him. He couldn’t even win the starting job from Diehl! And I think we saw why in the first Redskins game this year. Used and abused by good pass rushers.

Yeah I thought Beatty was 100% better than Diehl in 2010
I thought that the decision to play Beatty at RT for the preseason game was moronic. He had little experience there and has always played better on the left side. Further Diehl had played RT.
But that’s what happens when the coach favors vets. They get the little favorable things and the young guys have to press on. But my opinion the preseason and on field play favored Beatty all 2010. I can’t comment on practice, but I would always give priority to in game action.

I understand coaches leaning on vets.
They are trusted commodities. But coaches are also hyper-competitive guys. They want to win. And more than that, their jobs depend on them winning. I have to believe the coaches are putting players on the field that they believe give them the best chance of winning. We don’t see half of what they see from these players. Are they always 100% correct? No way. In a way the Beatty injury was a slight blessing. Not because we lost Beatty but because it forced the coaches to shake things up on the line, getting Boothe and Petrus on the field. I think the combo of Boothe and Diehl on the left is better than Diehl and Beatty. Now hopefully the combo of Boothe and Beatty are even better than that.
by NYStateofMind on Jan 14, 2012 3:33 PM EST up reply actions
Coaches are hyper competitive
But they are also victims of their own dispositions. In Philly they love to go with the young guys, think they regret losing Dawkins? Their secondary has been rudderless since he left. Every coach, does that stuff. You like vets, you put em in position to succeed and you’re happy when you’re opinion is justified.
it’s a rare coach that just doesn’t care, and is willing to demote and cut guys without remorse. Think about Walsh. Parcells almost fractured the Giants ver Brunner vs Simms. Walsh goes out and trades for competition for a HOF QB.

What I meant was
he certainly hasn’t gone after any top-tier talent in the draft. Maybe we had bigger needs (that’s certainly debatable) or there were guys on the board we just couldn’t pass on. I love that we have Nicks and JPP. Jury is still out on Prince. But I would also love to have some unquestioned stars on the OL. I’m still not really sold on Beatty. Boothe looks like he can be a good G for us (but guards are a lot easier to come by). Baas I’m also not sold on yet. How does SF just let a top-tier C walk away? Maybe because he is not top tier. They certainly don’t seem to miss him. We definitely need a much better RT and I would still like a better LT. I think we should give Petrus a shot at Snee’s job, and if he and Boothe can become very good bookending the C then maybe you don’t have to worry so much about Baas.

I really don't think he played GREAT
That is definitely a stretch. Almost everybody agrees he was bad at run-blocking (and that’s what the Giants do…). I also saw plenty of games where he was abused by the opposing DE or OLB. Next year will be his fifth in the league and I still don’t think anybody could say “the Giants really have one hell of a LT there in Beatty”. And that is called a project. At LT. The most important position on the most important unit on the team.
by NYStateofMind on Jan 14, 2012 2:44 PM EST up reply actions
OK. When he played they gave up zero sacks and ran the ball really well
Next year is his 4th in the league and at one point this season Dan Graziano said he was playing as well as Jason Peters.
But I give in, he isn’t as good as Art Shell. He’s been a fine LT and it’s quite ordinary for a LT not named Anthony Muñoz to play really well starting year 3. And I’ll add that when you grab a fine LT at the end of the 2nd round, and other teams are drafting RTs in the first round, you should praise the GM.

I don't know
Maybe I’m too hard on the guy. Maybe I am expecting perfection or something on the left side. That 1st Redskins game and even the Rams game left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth about him. As I said he was abused by Bowen and Orakpo and I can’t remember who on the Rams. The sacks stat is misleading. Eli has been good at avoiding the sack. But he has been harassed and hurried and flushed a lot. Especially in the Redskins game. Just because Beatty didn’t “give up a sack”, doesn’t mean it wasn’t his fault when his man beat him and flushed Eli into another DL who got the sack.
by NYStateofMind on Jan 14, 2012 3:09 PM EST up reply actions
Hmmm
Last year when he played next to Boothe they didn’t give up a sack, until I think Jared Allen got one in garbage time against the Vikes. They dominated the Vikes DL. It changed the game.
I didn’t see Beatty getting abused by Orakpo, I did see the Skins get good pressure up,the middle. Looked to me like they were owing after the Diehl-Baas area. Makes sense new guy, new spot, poor communication.

I had this discussion with someone else
It prompted me to go back and watch some games, keeping my eye solely on Beatty. That Washington game was BAD. Beatty mostly drew Bowen, who he couldn’t really keep up with. Pascoe actually lined up outside of Beatty a lot and took on Orakpo. But the handful of times Orakpo went against Beatty one on one it was like a turnstile. They had to always send a TE or RB over to that side to help Beatty out.
by NYStateofMind on Jan 14, 2012 3:57 PM EST up reply actions
One thing I can say
is that it’s not like I pay very close attention to LT play on other teams. I don’t know how other guys do against top pass rushers so I’m judging Beatty in a bit of a vacuum. Maybe unfair….
by NYStateofMind on Jan 14, 2012 3:59 PM EST up reply actions
Hmmm
When they played Skins in 2010, everyone said Beatty’s gonna get killed by Orakpo, but he basically made him a none factor
One year later the interior of our OL is a shambles and it’s Beatty’s fault. In pass protection, if your GCG combo can’t get it done, the outside guys are playing on one leg. I’d say you can’t determine anything about your tackles when the center is a sieve.

Skins Game
If you have the ability, I’d rewatch that 1st Skins game this year (NFL Replay on NFL.com is great. Only $40). Beatty’s problems had nothing to do with his linemates (unless you think the RG should be able to block his own man and Beatty’s). This was Beatty just getting worked one-on-one, over and over again. Maybe it was because it was early in the season. Maybe he wasn’t prepared with the lockout and all. Hopefully he comes back next year and really proves my argument wrong.

He wasn’t some big star when we signed him. But he was a vet trained and ready. They were following the same playbook this time, and lately I’d say they knew what they were doing. Injuries and a sort off season may have had more to do with our struggles than anything else.

More on JR
I also have to wonder if he ever gave any thought to bringing back Seubert. Considering he was our best OL last year before he got hurt and how badly Snee has struggled this year, was this even a thought? He has to be over his injury by now right? Look how long it took JR to bring back Blackburn. He should have done that the day Goff went down instead of struggling through the year with all these URFAs at LB, especially in the middle. Look how much his presence has stabalized the LB unit. So it’s not like JR’s methods are beyong reproach.

Final Thoughts
For the past 7 years, all the Giants have done is take a token, low-round guard in the draft, with the exception of Beatty (and I’m not sure you get a great LT at the end of the 2nd round). So if that is not ignoring the OL, I’m not sure what is. That’s like saying JR addressed safety this year by picking Sash in the 6th round. Low draft picks don’t often develop into quality starters.

It isn't a big weakness
It has been a work in progress. I’ve already said, I don’t think it was ever as good as its rep on 2008, they clearly couldn’t dominate without Plax threatening the edge. Plenty of teams (Ravens ?) had OL that could.
What blue chip OL has JR passed on? We’d have to go 3-13 to get a top pick, maybe 6-10 for a really blue chip LT in the draft. It’s JRs ability to keep us good that prevents him from getting the guys you think he should find.
Let’s see what we think of Beatty with a LG who isn’t a turnstile and a C that has more than 60 minutes of experience with the team. Brewer was considered a top RT prospect n the draft, so I’m hoping he’s ready, cause I can dig a 6-6 330 guy with good feet out there. Add in Some fresh legs at RB (most expect the team to promote Scott and maybe bring in another new back to train), things could be better than ever.
It’s already a wrap… might as well not show up tomorrow.

Regarding Brewer...
Here was one pre-draft write-up on him…
" …enters the NFL with just 21 career (college) starts. His size and potential pique the interest of scouts who might be inclined to gamble on his upside in the middle rounds if they’re convinced he won’t spend more time in the trainer’s room than film room and practice field."
That does not sound like a top prospect to me. The “gamble on his upside in the middle rounds” is what sticks out to me.
And I do get what you’re saying about not having the opportunity or not being in position to draft a great LT. And I am pretty happy with our 1st round picks lately. I also do realize that the Giants secondary had been a constant issue back then and our O line wasn’t.
I don’t know though. IMO we could have used 2nd & 3rd round picks on OL (G, C, RT), instead of guys like G.Wilkinson, C.Sintim, S.Moss, J.Jernigan. Of course hindsight is 20/20, but it still would have been more of a focus for me if I was the GM.

OL a weakness...
Well we did finish dead last in rushing (3.3ypc?). And that is with a really good passing attack. Also, even though the sack #s don’t show it (probably because Eli is just a veteran who knows how to move around and get rid of the ball), the pass protection this year was not really that great. Rarely did Eli have a nice, clean pocket (think NE Patriots) to throw from.
Also, how can you say the 2008 (or 2007) Oline was over-rated? 4.6ypc in ‘07, 5.0ypc in ’08. Those are great numbers. And even though we had Plax & Toomer then, this was still at a time when Eli was putting up Trent Dilfer like numbers and not many teams really respected our passing game. Teams playing the Giants came in saying “We gotta stop the run”… and they couldn’t.

Seubert would be here if he could play
He’s still walking with a limp, I bet his leg is never right. I’d put him in the circle of honor, I think he was the heart of the OL. Maybe not the best player, but he brought it every second of every game. I think Petrus is in his image. That cat is intense, he wants to annihilate people.

SEPT 25 - Giants 29 - Eagles 16
Game Prediction
First off, let me preface what I will say with a note that I am still trying to understand what the Giants did to the Randy Moss Vikings when they made their run with Collins, so stranger things have happened. And the Giants CAN win this game, i dont think its farfetched, but ultimately here is why I think the Giants will be handled fairly easily in this game.
1) First and foremost, the Pack is 15-1, and thats not an accident. They are better than we are, and as good as Eli has been this year, Rodgers has been better. After alot of games this year, the Giants are a mediocre team, that has beaten alot of mediocre teams and has one good win (Pats) in a lousy division. We are on a roll, having played a good half against the Cowboys, and a good half against the Falcons, both mediocre opponents on our level. I am amazed at all the pundits picking the Giants, I have never seen anything like it. Its like because GB had a bye, everyone forgot how good they are and now everyone remembers 07 and does not want get left off the bandwagon. GB to me is in a great spot, at home, they got the undefeated crap off their plate, and they were able to rest a bunch of guys with injuries.
2) To me, the comparisons to the 07 team are few. That year, our team played a bunch of quality football down the stretch against tough teams. Jacobs and Bradshaw were healthy, our line was the best in football, our D was just flat out better and more consistent, especially in the back.
3) Our secondary stiil sucks, and we are playing Rodgers, who will exploit them. Look, our Dline was able to do some things the last couple of weeks to mitigate that, but a couple of things will hinder that this time. First, we are playing the cold grass. That will slow our rush. Secondly, Rodgers is NOT an immobile stiff. He is athletic, he will get rid of the ball quick where our rush is not a factor, and when it is, he will move and find guys wide open downfield.
4) The Giants can win this game with Ball Control, but I dont think Gilbride or Coughlin have the sack to call this type of game. The minute GB gets up ten, it will be throw throw throw, and the minute we run two running plays in a row and dont get a first down, they will be convinced we cant run and will be throwing some more. I think the Giants will instigate a track meet we cant win. Eli will be able to put up yards and points on GB, the problem is, you are playing one of the few teams in the league thats better at it.
5) In a game where to alot its a toss up, if you look at turnovers and specials, we are on the short end of it. GB gets turnovers like crazy, and most of us are just praying that Blackmon does not drop the ball every time the other team punts. I wouldnt think the pendulum swings toward GB on this one.
I hope i am wrong, but if we are closer than two scores at the end I am going to be very surprised. After alot of games, we are still a mediocre team with alot of key losses in the back playing one of the best offenses in recent memory. Its not a great matchup.
Hey Tom Coughlin – if you can pull something out of your ying-yang here and win this game, I will gladly forgive all the crappy football this team has displayed this year and relent that you and Fewell should hit the bricks. I wont say I will be able to understand it, but like Tebow, there comes a point where performance makes other arguments invalid.
So prove me wrong.

I'd love to see ball control
But I don’t see the Giants doing that. A good run-pass balance, yes, but they have not controlled a game on the ground all year. You dance with your date, and the Giants escort to this game is Nicks, Cruz, Ballard, and MM.
I wish we were built more for that kind of game. That said, I still want to see a good dose of Hynoski and Jacobs, but the game will be won by our defense keeping us in it and the offense making the big plays they’ve made all year.
"Allie Sherman wrecked the Giants!" - my 5th grade bus driver
The running game for this match..
Will be extremely important if they follow a recipe that calls for limiting Rodgers chances..But your right, we have not shown that all year…They did piss off our O-line however with their comments…So that will help motivate our line..Their D-line can’t stop a turtle, so maybe we’ll see the rush attack we’ve been looking for all year…
"When I was a boy and I had no sense..I got my pecker caught in an electric fence..Well it curled my hair, tickled my balls and made me shit in my overalls..."
If we do go ball control,
and are having the success to stick with it, we better punch it in for 6 at the end of these drives.
The Giants are a big play offense so I think we will “dance with our date” as D J puts it but if we get a lead? Well, we saw the formula for success last week.

By ball control..
I mean if we can control the clock..eat away at it and then let Eli and the gang throw for scores..We’ll be in good shape..an all out air war puts us at a disadvantage…

Win TOP at the least, yes.
And we do that by running it effectively, keeping the clock ticking, PLUS we have to stop AR on third downs. Can’t win TOP if the Pack have the ball.
This QB is going to be hard to beat.

Give him some credit...he's been calling for Coughlin's head for quite some time and has held firm.
He DID say he’d change his mind if we won.
I don’t think he understands though, that we’re 2 games away from the Superbowl, and about to play a playoff game tomorrow. Sober thinking is for after the fact.
We’re all pumped up, testosterone flowing…and we all expect to win. We aren’t favored, and most rational people would say we lose, but damn it, we’re Giants fans, and we don’t give a f—- about what other people say, and anybody who predicts that we lose (probably unfairly) gets shunned, because honestly nobody wants to hear that shizz until if we lose. But that isn’t happening of course. Because we win.

problem with this outlook (by problem, I mean why everyone just jumped on this dude) so close to the game is that nobody cares anymore. We’ve been through the angle a thousand times. I personally am done being an analyst, and now I’m just a rabid fanatic. I’m also probably fueled by the arrogance of GB and their fans. And I’m most certainly matching that arrogance (justified) with arrogance of my own (less justified)…but I don’t really care lol

Actually
The secondary in 2007-2008 was riddled with injuries and consisted of young inexperienced players like Craig Dahl, Michael Johnson, Corey Webster (who up until the end of the season was viewed as a bust) and Aaron Ross. Also we had old broken down guys like RW McQuarters out there at times. Believe it or not, this year’s secondary is much better.
The linebackers were better in 2007-2008.
I don’t know if that changes your analysis much, but I think you did get that wrong.

Ball Control and TOP
I also worry based on the rest of this season that TC and KG won’t stick with the run if there isn’t success early — which is loony because our O line and backs tend to wear down the defense if we keep hitting them. But there are ways to control the clock with a short pasing game – tho’ it means Cruz, Ballard and maybe Beckum & Hynoski making catches in the middle of the field to keep the clock running.
Stop SOPA.
Something I was thinking about...
The greatest seasons I have seen a QB have and the success of their teams is pretty impressive:
1984 Marino – SB appearance
1988 Montana – SB Champ
1990 Kelly – SB appearance
1994 Young – SB Champ
1996 Favre – SB Champ
1999 Warner – SB Champ
2004 Peyton – Lost Conference Championship
2007 Brady – SB appearance
2011 Rodgers….
History would tell us that when a QB has a historically great season that his team is at least going to the SB. Interesting to note that our Giants beat both Kelly and Brady and now have a chance to beat Rahgizz
200

Consider also...
84 – Marino beaten by a VERY GOOD SF defense, allowed 16
88 – Cincy lost their star d-lineman early in that game and still held SF to 20
90 – Bills held to 19 by a VERY GOOD Ball Control Offense (essentially one’s best defense – almost 41 minutes)
94 – San Diego – no defense
96 – NE defense not great
99 – The Greatest Show on Turf held to 23
2004 – Colts – no defense; NE, very good defense
2007 – lost to a VERY HOT defense
Defense does play a big part in these contests. We keep’ em around 24 to 30, we’ve got ’em right where we want ’em!

I see your point, and we love some defense 'round these parts,
but what has stood out to me is the fact that these guys, with the exception of Peyton in 2004, all made it to the Super Bowl.
And this is only the divisional round.

i think this attitude is not just about APC
I think the fan base actually reflects the underlying attitude of the team and organization as well.
Oh, they’ll say the right things, and the coaches surely know nothing is to be taken for granted. But that doesn’t mean the players really believe the season could be at risk to what they see as a 9 win team they already beat, and who they blew out last year.
And let me say something else no one wants to say. I think Philbin’s family tragedy and his unavailability this week could have something of an impact. I don’t think it will be measurable, but it smells like it to me.
The thing that would worry me watching their head coach this week is how depressed he sounds about the tragedy. I like his humanity and empathy from a pure human point of view, but unfortunately it also sets a bit of a tone. I’m feeling more distraction for this team out of this stuff than I am feeling “Let’s win one for the Gipper.”
It’s all just a hunch. But if there is such a thing as a possible trap playoff game, I think this is it. The Giants have that lean and hungry something to prove thing going on just as they are coming together on all cylinders- they know and believe they can win and they have enough healthy paranoia about the possibility of failure that they could ambush Green Bay
That’s what happened to Atlanta. This is a tougher challenge of an opponent for sure, but this game could surprise the Packers in a bad way, who may come out a little flat and get hurt by it.

But will everyone else on all three teams. Consistency on coaching brings consistency across a collection of people.
I think the Giants will be more physical and coordinated for the game. And sometime around the end of the 3rd Q it will dawn on the Packers for real that they could lose this game. And then the Giants will smell an attainable win and assert their will on the outcome.

I expect this one to be low scoring in the first half
the Packers are gonna be rusty, there’s just no way they’ll be firing on all cylinders unless the Giants defense is gonna take a dump (speaking of that…brb…) to start this one. And the Giants offense just loves to oblige by keeping it close, be it with stalled drives cuz of drops, or FGs cuz Gilbride just has to get his screen-gasm in the redzone.
2nd half I’d say they’ll take more chances, change things up and then we’ll see some points. The key to this one me thinks is Jacobs. Do the Giants get him the ball, be it by the ignorance they show in avoiding him, or by them being down and passing a lot. Also can the Packers have a Giants defense like resurgence (remember they were good at one point) and take it too the Giants.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
I can see this scenario
Problem is, I can also see a frenzied Lambeau where the Pack just comes out flying and it’s 14-0 with 8 and change left in the first quarter.
Just no telling how this one comes out of the gates. Either way, I think our D needs to make a couple of message plays in the FQ, even if it starts to get away from them, just to keep the Pack from thinking they can impose their will offensively on the team

Not sure if that is bad or good
It is better to be silent and be thought a fool, then to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
All is Good!
The Giants will have the patience to hang with the Pack as long as the score is close. All the pressure is on the Pack to win just like it was in Foxboro!

The pressure is on the Packers which is odd because you would think the pressure would normally be on the “pack-ee”…

It is a combo of many things,
but first and foremost they are happy with Martin, see the good young catching prospect in Austin Romine, and see the potential in the 23 year old arm from Seattle who many have said is the best young pitching prospect in the majors.

Plus ARod will be the DH of the future
and Montero really doesn’t have a position.
So, the more I think about it, the more sense it is making. Though Montero’s September has me missing him already…

Yanks got Pineda, a good young pitcher
I also read that Montero is not very good defensively and the Yanks do not want him as a DH.
With that said, my full attention is on Big Blue!
that idea is put to paper through ink, or electronic what have you
fact is Montero’s pretty good behind the plate for a 22 year old. He’ll never be Pudge Rodriguez, but he might just be Jorge Posada. His bat on the other hand was a few steps above Posada’s potentially.
I was all on the Giants until the Yankees had to poop on it. Hopefully the Giants win so I can not give a crap about the Yankees for a few more weeks.

"When I was a boy and I had no sense..I got my pecker caught in an electric fence..Well it curled my hair, tickled my balls and made me shit in my overalls..."

Why is Tom Quinn still here? I loves me some Coach Clawfin.
Why the Giants will win:
We have the Interception Machine, the Kraken, The Dream (known also as OptiNicks Prime), HAM, CRUUZZZZZZZZZ, Big Boy.
All they have is Discount Double Check. Our nicknames are much better. Is it Sunday yet? I’m tired of waiting.
I support the Giants like bras support Kim Kardashian's boobs. It can be a struggle, we've had some jiggles, but we're still firm.

Just voted
Then realized you can vote as many times as you want, so I voted about 20 more times. Let’s get Cruz what he deserves.
I thought I heard they were not gonna go with a "young" coach though.

HA...
Let’s just say that I have a “friend” who thought it was much safer to build his own than bring in any 3rd party bunker building contractors.

I wonder if Spags is willing to do a McDaniels
and come back?
