Perry Fewell Not On Candidate List For Any Head-Coaching Jobs

I wrote on Monday about Perry Fewell's journey this season from genius destined to be a head coach somewhere, to bum New York Giants fans wanted run out of town, and back to genius again.

Well, here is something I found interesting today. The firing of Hue Jackson by the Oakland Raiders makes six teams around the league hiring new coaches. Fewell is not a candidate for any of those jobs, if the 2012 Coaching Carousel tracker put together by SI.com is accurate.

Fewell, you recall, was in the mix for four vacancies last off-season.

This off-season, he does not appear to be in demand. Kansas City has already hired Romeo Crennel, and Fewell does not appear on SI's list for any of the five openings that remain.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers might be leaning toward Marty Schottenheimer, the St. Louis Rams and Miami Dolphins are pining for Jeff Fisher, the Jacksonville Jaguars appear to want an offensive coach and early word is Winston Moss is the likely choice in Oakland.

Interesting what a difference a year makes.

The first 13 games ruined any chance Fewell would get a shot anywhere..

He didn’t deliver..and I still believe TC stepped in and demanded changes, even though he has too much class to admit it..

I'm with Bobbi on this

I don’t think Radio was going to make any changes because he stuck with his scheme all this time.
I think TC told him to keep it simple stupid and let his players play.
TC probably told Radio it was his way or the highway.

14 games

you and others keep saying 13 games. The Giants defense didn’t look that great in the 1st half in game 14 vs the Redskins. We allowed 17 first half points. In the 2nd half of that game the Skins basically milked the clock by running the ball.

y do we all forget about the early part of the season?

we gave up a few big plays but that was the story last year when our d wasnt as statistically bad. everyone take a second & think about what we did to Buffalo (beside 2 plays) or what we did to Tom Terrific & the Pats in the 1st half. or what we did to Frank Gore ALL DAY. We werent close to perfect & we made a couple bums QBs look better than they are but the D played a couple good games mixed in there.

Since we can’t get Spags, I’m content to see how Fewell’s ideas work out now that he’s got his personnel.

by Lady Kaede on Jan 10, 2012 6:01 PM EST reply actions

Yeah we will settle for the 2nd choice. LAst i know of it is that Spags is on vacation and has hinted he may take a break from coaching or coaching related talk for next few months.

Maybe he is waiting for the entire post season (superbowl) to be over so that if some playoff team may be interested then he will have chance to talk to them too (hint? hint ?maybe)

Or you could say that Archie would only let Eli go

to a franchise with quality staff like TC. Eli-TC are a very good match. Eli needed some coddling and interference his first few years and TC provided that environment where he could thrive.

See Ryan-Sanchez as an example of how not to bring your QB along.

"Allie Sherman wrecked the Giants!" - my 5th grade bus driver

by Dick J on Jan 10, 2012 9:36 PM EST up reply actions

Good point.

The tragedy with the Jets is the same as the Cowboys. Both teams circle around a certain individual associated with their respective teams (JJ for Cowboys and Rex for the Jets). Both of those guys think that they are the franchises and ignore the team.

This is not the 2007 team.
2011 NYG will have their own legacy.

by BB1156 on Jan 10, 2012 9:38 PM EST up reply actions

And it's hurt their QB's development.

Both Rex and Jerry anointed Sanchez and Romo as “the guys”. TC never got up every week and said “Eli’s our guy, we’re going to the Super Bowl with him, he’s the face of our franchise, etc.”

The Jets and the Cowboys put their QB’s under pressure with all the attention they put on them; TC doesn’t do this.

"Allie Sherman wrecked the Giants!" - my 5th grade bus driver

by Dick J on Jan 10, 2012 9:57 PM EST up reply actions

Becuase it is a team and every player and coach has a role. It takes all of them to make a complete team.

TC knows that. We fans know that. Some teams just do not get that part of the reality.

2011 NYG will have their own legacy.

by BB1156 on Jan 10, 2012 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

disagree again

you and I are usually on the same page. TC and Eli both started with the Giants in 2004. TC had a reputation as a tyrant not as a coddler. KG was his QB coach before becoming the OC in 2007.

Archie suffered playing his entire career for the inept Saints. He didn’t want Eli to suffer the same fate. That’s why he didn’t want Eli playing for the Chargers. It was more about NOT playing for the Chargers than playing for the Giants.

Perry Fewell Stinks!

by GMen56-11 on Jan 10, 2012 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

So we disagree - that's OK, we're in the tournament and it's good.

I’m just about to finish a reply to your read and react comment below, and we disagree there too.

TC handled Eli with kid gloves. How many times did we hear people say, “Why doesn’t TC rip Eli a new one when he makes the (insert any of Eli’s classic goofs)?” He never tore into Eli like he did into every one of his players at one point or another. He handled Eli well, and the proof is in the pudding.

I'd rather have a coach who tried to do too much than one who didn't do enough.

PF had complex, complicated, hard to communicate ideas for slowing down offenses that are running wild in the NFL right now.

I hated to see the confusion and the chaos on the field, I too wanted him to lose all the masking and gimmicks and get down to hard-nosed football…but -

Could PF be ahead of his time? Seriously, will it take cloaking devices and strange coverage schemes (and players comfortable with the endless variations) to keep teams in games when offenses routinely throw for 375-425 a game? Eli says, “I go through my progressions and see where to make the throw.” Somebody’s got to make that harder for the qb to do.

Not ready to leave PF out of our future plans yet. Brute force and Kraken’s being released sure overcome a lot…but more than that will be needed in the long run.

PF is a cover 2 read and react DC. Other similar Giant DCs, Rod Rust, Tim Lewis and now PF have been monumental failures.

The way the game is now played soft zones won’t get the job done. You need a more aggressive style D.

by GMen56-11 on Jan 10, 2012 9:42 PM EST up reply actions

It wasn't pure R&R - theere were many components to what PF was doing. And...R&R can be aggressive

It should put more hats on the ball sooner. Players balk at it because it violates the primal football player’s urge to hit what’s in front of them, and instead asks them to survey and decide.

We played soft because we had a lot of second tier guys on the field and no one really was getting the system. Without buy-in, it’s not happening. Perhaps with the late season success players may be open to trying more of PF’s wrinkles in 2012.

However, to use your quote "I go through my progressions and see where to make the throw." you simply cannot allow a good quarterback the time to do that. My beef with the way the defense played early on, was not so much the blown coverages and confusion in the secondary (though that was awful), it was the lack of pressure on the quarterback from the front line (particularly the 3-man rush).

You can only do so much to confuse your opponents with your coverage schemes and if they can sit back in the pocket for 6+ seconds they will figure it out.

BTW, Marty? Really??? He’s 68 years old!

but then how can Jet offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer (whose offense has sucked all year) be rumored for the Jag job?

I'd say 21-24. If we can do that, I think we win.

However, if we can run the ball effectively, I don’t just give us a chance, we are DEFINITELY winning if we rush for say, 125 and over. I have this sneaking feeling that they are going to overlook Osi. And I think he comes up with two sacks, one for a fumble. They are going to key on JPP, for sure. And that leaves Osi wide open. I noted that Tuck should be rushing from the tackle position on 3rd downs, and they’ve done that more. JPP, Osi, Canty, and Tuck. Good luck on that.

I'm not so sure that I would be sad if he went.

One mark of a solid coach is the ability to do well with what he has in an alloted time.
Looking at the shortened prep time, along with the injuries, I just don’t see where he adjusted his plan very much until a few weeks ago (almost too late); as some have mentioned above, I too believe that he didn’t make that choice on his own.
Either way I don’t see the Giants organization sending him onward.
The only way he would depart is if there are any more coaching jobs available when he becomes available, in February.

Quit playing not to lose. Start playing to WIN! Geeez...

No it doesn't

It only forces them if they aren’t planning on interviewing a candidate. I’m guessing that when Marvin Lewis was DC in Baltimore teams werent being forced to interview him.

And I’m thinking that interviewing someone for a couple of hours ever 5-7 years is pretty inconsequential.

I’d hardly call it a pressing issue, if that’s your objection

The only problem I have with the Rooney Rule....

….is political correctness means it can never end.

There was no question that it was needed nine years ago, when two-thirds of the players were black and 6% of the coaches/GMs.Seemed like pretty clear empirical evidence that blacks were not getting their fair share of opportunities.

However minorities in senior positions have quadrupled since then, 22% was the last number i saw. I can imagine a day when the NFL will have more than 50% of the coaches and GMs being African American, but people outside the sport will say the because discrimination still exists in society at large, the Rooney Rule needs to stay. Then it becomes counterproductive.

As for the idea that it unfairly forces the billionaires who own the teams to spend time and money talking to black people they have no intention of hiring….C’mon Man.

Next you’ll want to cut their taxes….

i do not see what ethnicity has to do with anything. If people would not make their ethnicity an issue then it is not important.

When people are labelled based on race, religion, gender etc then it is saying they are less than others. People should get in line and apply for a job and the most qualifying person should get the job.

i have this argument going on with the census people now. They sent me letters 3 times that i did not complete my census papers because i did not fill out the ethnic part of the form. i refuse to fill it and now they are saying they will send someone to talk to me. i am telling them come and arrest me even but i will NOT be labelled a part of some ethnic group. i am an American and that is the end of that. Why is it necessary to divide people into categories?

Come into the light my son

For pure excitement, I’ll take his game against the Steelers against any QB performance this year. He’s the Johnny Knoxville of the NFL.

On every snap he might:

Throw a pick six or throw a 50 yard bullet
Run over a safety or sustain a career threatening injury

I’m so sick of watching Brady Brees Rodgers et al throw the same 50 timing passes.

Thank God for Tim Tebow and Thank God he doesn’t play for my team.

On Monday Mike and Mike opened with 25 minutes including commericals of discussion of Tebow. The 2 minutes on the Giants game then another commercial break. This morning I changed the channel within 10 seconds of watching.

Tebow played well. His best game as a pro. He was still 10 of 21. Greeny said TT was spectacular. He wasn’t. His WRs made some big plays.

Well let's be fair

He’s got a Heisman trophy and has been debated as perhaps the greatest college football player of all time, so his résumé isn’t bad.

The question is why TJ Yates isn’t getting more press. He’s started fewer games, and had less training. I thought his win over Cincy was at least as impressive.

HA

nywins42 needs a new screen name - "nywins46" sounds great!

Just ordered FatHeads for all available Giants. Now I have something to aim at when punching holes in my wall.

I know

I’m wondering about his potential.

Flyer? He was a sure first rounder.

Thousands of college players have done worse than Austin, not gotten caught and left without the ‘stain’ on their resume.

Warren Sapp called him a steal. He’s gonna be a huge asset next year.

Did you mean Chad Jones?

This is not the 2007 team.
2011 NYG will have their own legacy.

Chad is an inspiration

And I am proud of the way that the Giant organization have supported and stood behind him. If he ever steps on the field that would be terrific.

I called it a flyer because they guy hadn't played football in a year. His last game was as a junior.

The draft guys, including Mayock, called it a flyer, and I agree. It was a risk. I liked the pick, but it was a definite risk given he hadn’t played and their were questions of work ethic. So yeah, flyer.

And Sapp also picked ATL to beat us.

Not sold on Sapp’s word at all. Now Deion? That’s another story.

Phil Simms is high on him

This week Simms was talking about him and said that if healthy, Austin would be a player.

Why

I think teams will look at Spags and realize Giants have great players on D, which may or may not be a direct reflection on the coaching. I know coaching is important, but when you have a front like ours, it prob makes things a bit easier.

Why does Osi has to open his mouth. Don’t give Rodgers an excuse.

"When I was a boy and I had no sense..I got my pecker caught in an electric fence..Well it curled my hair, tickled my balls and made me shit in my overalls..."

If Spags wasn't almost in the grasps of Philly

I would be ok with having Perry again.

I see your point. However. Your stupid.
