Ask A Packer Fan: Divisional Edititon Part 2

Ok, so that got out of hand a bit....

Anyways, the thought of creating a new thread was brought up, becuz, the first one was gettin' kinda long, y'know?

I'd like to apologize for my behavior in the first thread. And anyone else from APC who might have offended you guys. Lets please, please, please try to keep this second thread clean, and less trash talking than the first.

Also some quick updates from the week; Joe Philbin, Packers offenseive coordinator, his son died. Condolences to him and his family. Gotta be tough, especially during such a busy week as this is. Life comes before football, and that's just a terrible tradgedy.

James Starks [RB, Packers] is listed as questionable for the game.

Only player I saw on the Giants injury report was Aaron Ross.

Please drop a few recs to keep this near the top, if ya don't mind [and feel free to un-rec the first post.]

Again, let's keep this thread MUCH CLASSIER than the first. That goes for both sides, myself included. [Remember, if you're not a regular poster on BBV, you're a guest. Be respectful.]

Sorry from both sides are probably due.

What are the chances that Starks plays?

Also, do you think that the layover that Rodgers has had….it’s been what, like three weeks since he’s played…will have any sort of effect?

You never know; my guess is that he plays.

Grant has looked real good recently.

He’s stepped up in blitz protection fairly well, and he’s ripped off two of the biggest plays of his career in the last 3 weeks of the season. However, most Packer fans would take Starks, as would I.

Hello Giant fans

I was bored this summer one day and watched super bowl 42 on You tube. I have to say what a great game that was mostly in the 4th quarter. The first three quarters almost had no action at all. The Pats passed up a field goal and went for it on 4th and 13 in that game as well in the first half. Brady had time all year to throw that season and had no time in that game. Great game.

The Greatest Game

I grew up regretting that I didn’t see the 1958 Colts-Giants ‘Greatest Game Ever Played’ — but SB XLII was MY greatest game. That Giants team WOULD NOT BE DENIED.

I don't think hate each other and rivalry is a fair statement...

I don’t view Giants and Packers as a rivalry at all..Just two teams trying to advance..There is zero history of heated battles year in and year out that would indicate a rivalry..Dallas?..yes..but the Giants?..Hell way back then we weren’t even a blip on the radar screen..In the NFC East we have a heated rivalry with all those teams every year..The worst fans in the league are the Eagleswith a few exceptions..For you guys..probably Detroit…
I find it rather funny that teams that have never accomplished a darn thing..their fans tend to be nasty..I read through the first thread here and decided I wasn’t going to be bothered with it..I have better things to do than to get into a pissing contest with other fans..
Bottomline is that this is a Football game..and whoever performs best will win the game..Obviously, I want the Giants to win..but if for whatever reason they don’t?..As long as I wake up Monday I’ll be happy..I’m not going to get all tied up in my shorts over a damn football game and I refuse to insult anyone over a football game..What purpose does that serve?..Does that kind of behavior influence the outcome of the game?..Are us fans playing in this game or is it the Giants and Packers players?..Anyway, I’m finished with my post…Good luck..let’s hope for a great contest…We’ll all be rooting hard for our respective teams..Let’s all show each other respect..

You let go and move on. It will be unpleasant but you do not mourn it forever. Seems the Vikes and Eagles have have never come out of the superbowl losses mournings. Yeah I am starting to hate the Saints with a passion. I would love to end their season but we will leave that up to the Niners. Week 1 was awesome beating them.

by Gjennings85 on Jan 10, 2012 6:04 PM EST reply actions

The Saints are frauds to me...

How many games did they have to play outside in actual football weather?? 8 games in their dome, 1 in Atlanta, 1 in STL, 1 in warm weather TB, 1 in warm weather Carolina, 1 in warm weather Jacksonville, 1 in Minnesota, 1 in GB week one which was warm. NO had to play ONE potential cold game at Tennessee in December. And it wasn’t even cold at all. New Orleans are the biggest frauds since the 18-0 Patriots.

Shula’s sabotage
It had rained heavily in South Florida in the days leading up to the game, and on Shula’s orders, the grounds crew at the Orange Bowl failed to place a tarp on the field, turning the pitch into a morass. The resulting muddy conditions neutralized the strength of the Jets’ offense, the running game, which was powered by McNeil, the league’s leading rusher that season.

Agreed

No hard feelings over a sound whooping we took at the dome. The Saints piss me off because they deliberately run up scores (which would be fine if it wasn’t to break Marino’s record), and they are never impressive on the road. Drew Brees has thrown the ball nearly twice as much as Rodgers has in the fourth quarter, to put that in perspective.

49ers will beat them into the ground.

I will say too that Green Bay/San Fran is a matchup I would have loved to see in the regular season. Not many great defenses in the NFL this season, so it would provide a barometer of how good that Packers offense really is. Obviously a great offense, but in a season where three quarterbacks (nearly five, with Eli being right there and Rodgers sitting out the last game) went over 5,000 yards, it’s really hard to say just how good they are.

Unfortunately the die-hard in me will bludgeon the objective fan in me to death if I keep talking about potential match-ups for Green Bay.

by Max Schwager on Jan 10, 2012 11:03 PM EST up reply actions

49ers defense is inflated, though.

Green Bay has San Fran’s number over the years. We beat them every time we play. I feel we have a better chance at beating the 49ers than any other playoff teams left, Broncos included. History says that, and the Packers will suck the air out of the 49ers if they play. I think the Giants would, too, and I think the Saints will beat ’em as well.

Hey GB fans

Much appreciate the new thread. My wifes a Packers fan so I have been stuck watching Packers games when they play opposite times. I have to admit I’m a little tiny bit of a closet fan , but of course come Sunday that won’t be the case.

I have 3 question

What happened to the defense this year? I’m not just talking stats because teams have to start throwing more then they want after the first quarter to keep up with Rodgers and Co. Boost passing yards and Turnovers…but they seem less aggressive in general blitzing a lot less or maybe just less impact from what I see on tv.

Do you see them coming out after the break into the playoffs aggressive on Defense like last years D?

Its no secret our Defense has had the turn around the last three weeks. With a heathly Osi, Tuck and JPP this has to have Packers fans a little worried? Especially if the Packers D allows Eli freedom to do as he pleases like our last match up.

My wifes exact works Sunday were. “F*$k we get a damn bi week, now here come the Giants on fire again”

Sup bro?

a. The loss of Cullen Jenkins [Their second best pass rusher] and Nick Collins [career threatening injury against Panthers] has hurt both their pass rush and pass defense. Teams were mostly inable to throw the ball over the middle, mostly due to Nick Collins having incredible range. Charlie Peprah has been a decent backup, and he makes a few plays but gets burned a lot. We still force a ton of turnovers. However, you’re completely right about the loss of aggression. Nice assessment.
b. I sure hope so, but I’m not sure. The thought gives me hope, though, it would take a ton of stress off Rodgers if the defense could find last years form. Tramon Williams, BJ Raji, and the other underachievers on this years defense will have to step up for that to happen.
c. Of course. You might have some idiots here and there who disregard them, but every intelligent Packer fan is worried about Tuck, Osi, and JPP. As for Eli, if our D can force 2 or 3 turnovers/interceptions, I think that should be sufficient, regardless of the numbers he puts up. That seems to have been Capers strategy the whole year, force turnovers, and let Rodgers do the rest. I believe the Pack lead the NFL in points off turnovers, but I’m not 100% on that.
I agree with your wife, I’m very nervous about the game.

by arodgb on Jan 10, 2012 9:16 PM EST up reply actions

ty man much appreciate

I forgot about collins, big loss in coverage away from woodson. Probably the reasoning behind Capers convervitive blitz packages. Fear of giving up the big play. Fewell did the same this year with Terrell Thomas and half our corners on ir. Until he realize not to many QB can throw TD passes under a pile of blue jeresys after the whisle.

If you want to rattle Eli and get him to turn it over stopping the run and pressure is key. We want big plays and that takes time.

Some may disagree with me but many of us never thought the Giants would have a chance to be in this postion when the season started….but over the last 3 games its hard to deny that the Giants are peaking on both side of the ball, sparking a lot of confidence in fans and players. Much like your run last year when your peaking and an underdog strange things can happen with little pressure on you to successed.

by hit_hard on Jan 10, 2012 10:18 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Yeah.

Green Bay has a lotta pressure to perform. The Giants don’t have quite as much; They’ve basically surpassed most expectations that fans had for the season. Plus, you guys are peaking, like you said, and that makes for a lethal team in the playoffs. In fact, I think the first round bye can hurt teams, considering it takes away the momentum from the regular season.

Point is, things are said with other motives, and it has been revealed since that the tickets on the stool story was fabricated and used by Coughlin (knowingly or unknowingly as being a false story) to motivate.

However, the common view remains that it is true… mainly because no one has bothered to look any deeper on it, as it makes for one of those “good stories of hubris” that play so well for football fans.

And he sits on lineman. The fact that he made the Pro Bowl is a joke. Tramon has played solid, but again, he’s far from last years form. More penalties, less INTs, and was pretty much abused by Megatron. He’s a fine corner, but he’s underachieving compared to last year. Yeah, I think it’s because of the injury from early in the year.

A Giants Fan Here in Chicago

I think I have a unique view as a Giants fan here in the Midwest. There are a ton of Packer fans here in Chicago. You guys are going to be a tough challenge.

It really comes down to our pass rush!

If we get the same push this weekend as we got last weekend I think we will win this game.

Tremendous amount of respect for you guys. I think it’s going to be a war.

by ChicagoGiantsFan on Jan 10, 2012 10:05 PM EST reply actions

Thanks for your comment.

Yes it comes down to our pressuring the qb and our own offense scoring more points than the Packers. Personally i would love to see a shutout by our defense.

i am not predicting any scores here. It is just that we Giants fans are spoiled by the past superbowl post seasons

When a team scores very low points then there is a shut out somewhere. Look at 1986, 1990 and 2000 seasons.

by maraman on Jan 10, 2012 10:52 PM EST reply actions

Uh, Sam Shields.

Our nickleback. He covered Cruz and Manningham the first game, and had a couple pass-breakups, but had a poor game overall. If the Packers wanna shut down the Giants pass offense, Shields is gonna have to step up for sure. He’s extremely fast, but plays undisciplined, and gambles too much. Technique-wise, he drops his hands, and doesn’t exactly like to tackle physical players [ie Brandon Jacobs]. Also, he’s being instructed to play his man 8-10 yards off, and while I don’t know the exact scheme, I still think he needs to scoot up a bit, and press his man at the line. Capers is smarter than me, though, so maybe there’s a reason for that.

Well here is how it went in our house

Since we are from Dallas, my wife is a Cowboys fan. She did not want the Steelers to pile up another superbowl on her team. For me it did not matter since if Steelers won they would have 7 superbowls and if Packers won they would have a total of 13 championships. You were already tied with us with 3 Superbowls anyway. So as for the Giants it was a lose-lose situation no matter who won. So i rooted for the Packers. In the end i decided to stick with NFC team.

The year when they went to the superbowl

they had the cardinals flags on cars and front yards all over town. Then after they lost the superbowl, they still proudly flew those flags the whole year leading to the regular season. Eventually towards the end of that season they started putting those flags away. Now they have stickers that say ‘2008 NFC Champion’.

Me and my wife have joked that we should line up the list of superbowl stickers on our back window on our Tahoe with all the superbowl appearances that her Cowboys (8) and my Giants (4) have. But then the problem is that i wont ride a car with that ugly blue star (Cowboys logo) on the car ans she wont ride a car that has a rival team’s sticker.

who should have been the MVP for that game. Majority of the Giants fans contend that Eli did deserve it.

He was superb throughout that post season run. He was very good in that game. He ran two long drives in the 4th quarter to take the lead twice. People talk about the Tyree catch but i am still in awe at how Eli got out of those multiple sacks in that play and then still completed the pass.

There's no doubt that the d-line as a whole was MVP

but who can you give it to individually? I would say Strahan for sentimental reasons, although Tuck probably had the best game of the linemen.

Even without a sack Osi was probably our best lineman that day...

Kawika Mitchell was also all over the place. Bottom line is the whole defense played outta their minds, even Gibril Wilson played great for gods sake. Thing is you can take out any one of those defensive players and we have a chance to win still. Take Eli out and we have NO chance. If I’m not mistaken that is the definition of MVP.

False again...

He made back to back sacks in the second quarter and that was it. He was our third best D lineman on the team that day behind Stray and Osi. Eli did something no QB has ever done, Eli was undeniably MVP.

FIRE Perry Fewell

by bleedblue12 on Jan 11, 2012 9:30 AM EST via Android app up reply actions

Rewatch that game

he is disruptive through out, making big plays when they were needed (and at crucial points, in particular stopping that late 1st half drive at midfield). If you want to be really fair, the whole D-Line deserves the MVP, but they don’t hand it out as a unified award (which they should, as sometimes part of the D carries the game).

by brisulph on Jan 11, 2012 10:11 AM EST up reply actions

Eli Manning has the greatest 4th qtr in SB history

He became the first QB to lead his team to a TD in the final minute of a Champ game when nothing less than a TD is good enough. Only other QB to throw two lead taking TDs in the 4th…Joe Montana. Eli making the greatest play in history on the game winning drive and nobody deserves the MVP except Eli. Fyi, I’ve watched that game at least 20 times.

FIRE Perry Fewell

by bleedblue12 on Jan 11, 2012 11:15 AM EST via Android app up reply actions

That just means

Eli played so-so (at best) for most the game. The D-line did the heavy lifting, keeping it close for 3 quarters, and Tuck was the best of the bunch on the line. I am not disparaging what Eli did (glad he did it), but he was mostly held in check for a lot of the game, forcing the D-Line to come up HUGE.

by brisulph on Jan 11, 2012 11:56 AM EST up reply actions

The defense was great for 3 quarters

And failed with the game on the line dude. Tuck was not our best lineman either. I suggest you go watch it again. Osi didn’t have a sack but he applied the most pressure and was doubled more than anyone else on the line, including Stray.

FIRE Perry Fewell

by bleedblue12 on Jan 11, 2012 12:07 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

You're right, my bad

The D sucked obviously… it’s not like they were holding one of the most prolific offenses ever to ONE SCORE for 3+ quarters (when, shockingly enough, the game was on the line… people forget a game if 4 quarters sometimes). Osi did apply some pressure, I agree, yet he did not get home.

Both the D-Line and Eli played well for parts of the game, but the D-Line did all the set-up work. Without them, Eli drives for a TD to make it 35-14 in a meaningless late game score.

by brisulph on Jan 11, 2012 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

You conveniently forget about

The 10 minute drive to open the game then a long drive from NE for TD that ate up the majority of the first half dude. The offensive gamelan execution was big in keeping Brady on the sideline. I never said the dline sucked that’s the major problem on this site. Even the mod can’t properly break down an argument.

FIRE Perry Fewell

by bleedblue12 on Jan 11, 2012 12:30 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

Despite the trollbait commentary

I’ll ignore it.

Eli lead a drive, which stalled out for a FG. The D gave up a TD. After that, Eli and the offense had one drive of any real length (which they turned over), and the D kept the Pats O from getting any scoring traction.

Yes the Pats had 11 minutes of first half possession to the Giants 19, but after you take out that first 10 minute drive you mentioned, that means the possession was dead even for the first half, meaning the D did their job, making up for the anemic Giants O.

Second half saw a 3rd quarter where the only big move on offense was the Pats getting to Giants 31, and the Giants stopped them on a 4th down (pretty key moment, even if most the credit goes to Belichick for having a huge brain fart in not kicking the FG).

The 4th quarter had a good drive by Eli for a TD, then a stop on D (HUGE), giving Eli a chance to really put the screws to them, at which point Eli overthrew a wide open Plax, a play which had a shot of going for some serious yards (if not a TD). He put the pressure back on the Giants D (which, to that point, had been playing well, but continued to face a widening TOP gap) and tired out on a sustained drive, giving up a TD on 3rd and goal.

This set the stage for the Eli TD#2, and all it required was a missed pick and a crazy ridiculous play to get it done.

Then the D came in and put an exclamation mark on their timely plays made that day, finishing the game.

So my apologies for exaggerating your point… but you did blame the D squarely for giving up the lead (plenty of extenuating circumstances lead up to that point, in particular the lack of sustained drives from the O and no points being put up). However, if you take the whole game as it was, the Giants D deserves more of the credit, and the MVP should have come from that segment of the team (since you can’t award the unit the MVP unfortunately).

With that, I am done discussing this, we will have to agree to disagree (as neither us are obviously going to bend on our viewpoints).

by brisulph on Jan 11, 2012 1:40 PM EST up reply actions

We can agree to disagree on MVP

You say Eli over threw Plax but in reality if Plax doesn’t stop his route the ball falls between the 1 and 7. Eli expected him to continue downfield.

Pretty much 3rd or 4th WR

He’s fallen behind Nelson on the depth chart, and the general consensus seems to be that he’s gone after next season. We’ve got a promising prospect on the practice squad, a lanky WR Tori Gurley that a lot of us want to see on the roster next year, and some fear that Driver will hold up the development of our young wide receivers. I think we should retain him, he can teach a ton and he still produces on the field, but it all comes down to salary and production. He’s been good the second half of the year, though, showed some burst on his TD last week against the Lions.

I have two friends who are Packers fans, and both of them are douches (about football). So, when I get into trash-talking here, though it’s all in good fun, I tend to forget that not all of you understand that as serious as I ever seem, I am always joking.

Really though, you guys are about as daunting of an opponent a team could have. The Pack is scary good. I can understand why you guys are confident. And hey, what’s the worst that could happen? You won a Super Bowl last season. At the end of the day, win or lose, it’s all good right?

If the Packers do lose, I promise not to create a post titled “Discount Double-Check” over at Acme, because while it would be hilarious, you guys have won me over with your kind gestures and words of encouragement.

Sunday should be great. I expect this to be every bit as good as we are all talking it up to be. I don’t think the football gods would let everybody get their feathers ruffled so early if it was going to be a bogus game.

by BB1156 on Jan 11, 2012 1:13 AM EST up reply actions

Basically our running game is split between Starks and Grant.

Starks is quicker, makes cuts faster, and has a little better speed, but that last point is debatable. He’s also had a great year in pass protection, giving up just one sack. Grant is the older vet, good one cut back, and also has a good pair of jets. He really flashed some speed on a screen pass last week against Detroit, where he flat out burned every Lions defender on the field. I have a hard time evaluating how much of that play was Grant, and how much was luck, but he was in the right position, and it resulted in an 80 yard TD.
Both backs have some shortcomings. Some complain about Starks not being aware of the sticks, and his preference to ‘dance’ around instead of making a cut and going. Grant seems to be better at making up his mind on where he will run, but when he’s ineffective, he looks like one of the worst running backs in the league. He also has struggled more in pass protection than Starks has.

would mean stuff the run to a 3.5 average or less, harass the heck out of your QB with multiple hits, hurries, and a few sacks, limit 3rd down conversions to like 20%, don’t allow a pass play more than 20 yards, give up 14 points or less.

I could go more into detail but that about sums it up.

Bears.

The Vikings had a claim in 09/10, but they quickly evaporated into a sub-par team, and we constantly beat them through the years. The Lions are one of the most pathetic excuses for a team, as they haven’t won in Lambeau for over two decades. That’s twenty-ish years, twice a year. They tried to make a claim to ‘rivalry’ this year, until we steamrolled them on Thanksgiving, and beat them with our second stringers. another DL. I wouldn’t put this behavior past Allen, though. The ridiculous thing about this is that there wasn’t even an ejection, just a 15 yard penalty (assessed on the kickoff; this happened on an extra point). Really, no penalty whatsoever.

Yeah, this one's going much smoover dough. :-)

A. I think it’s a tough matchup. Basically, Tramon Williams will be covering Manningham/Nicks [if I remember correctly], and Woodson will be covering Nicks/Cruz, but this is far from set in stone, as Woodson is moved all around the field to blitz and help out in run support. He gets slot duty a lot in coverage, though. Shields will be covering Cruz as well, and whoever else is at WR for you. I think we can force some turnovers, but there’s a lotta yards to be had on this defense. Peprah is a weak link in coverage, and Burnett hasn’t been as impressive later in the year, in fact, I’ve hardly heard his name during the last few games. That’s a good and bad thing, though. If there’s players to pick on, it’s whoever is covering Nicks, Shields, Peprah, and Jarrett Bush, who’s the dimeback but always seems to manage getting on the field. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that.

B. I think whoever is matched up with JPP. So in this case, Clifton. We’ve got an excellent interior, and a Pro Bowl-caliber RT in Bulaga, but our LT spot has been up in the air all season, and I think it’s a great opportunity for JPP to take advantage of. We’ll probably be chipping a RB/TE on JPP, just to give Clifton some extra help. I remember one of the Giants fans mentioning that JPP sheds tight ends with ease, due to his long arms. JPP should be commanding the majority of the Packers attention on defense.

if hte rest of your OL really is that good, the giants will lose this game

most Giants fans will admit that a pass rush is require for our defense to be successful. If the rest of your line can handle Osi/Tuck/Canty/Bernard/Linval in normal 1-on-1 matchups leaving your LT and a chipper on JPP, they’ll for the most part win that battle.

Inevitably there will be 1 or 2 plays where one of those guys just fool the blocker and get loose for an easy sack, but for most of the game they’ll be had.

This Giants pass rush is good, but they’re definitely beatable… and its not just about the number of sacks… its the consistent pressure disrupting plays. Ryan wasn’t sacked all that much in the Falcons game, but on almost every throw he was hurried, pushed back, etc. The Giants D relies on that effect to be…. effective.

by Matt dubs on Jan 11, 2012 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

if hte rest of your OL really is that good,

Well, first of all, this is the first time this particular O-Line combination has played together since week 5. Bulaga has been injured, and this is his first game back. Sitton has also been injured for a couple games, and only recently has he come back. Clifton has been out since Week 5, and this is his first true game back, minus 25 ‘practice’ snaps against Detroit last week. I truly think we have a top 10 O-Line when healthy and when they’ve played together, but our O-Line is probably a little out of synch right now. I think ;the Giant D will get a good amount of pressure on Rodgers.

understood

I tend to believe in general that a good OL will beat a good DL in general. The Giants have one of hte best DL in the game, but in that second game against Philly, when their OL started to click (and it really was great the second half of the season), our DL got thrown around.

In the Saints game its always a little tough to tell if Brees is getting the ball off so quick or the OL is protecting really well… but based on how well they ran too i think it was a combination of both.

Granted, in those two examples the giants didnt have a healthy Osi or Tuck (he’s played most of the year, but honestly he wasnt good until about 2/3 weeks ago). Noone knows how the GB unit will play after the long layoff, return from injuries etc… should be a really fun matchup to watch! I’m excited.

by Matt dubs on Jan 11, 2012 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

Good Points.

Brees has an unbelievable release. Gets him out of plenty of sacks. Yeah, it really comes down to O-Line for the Packers. Also, it’s key for the Giants to keep consistent pressure on Rodgers for the whole game, and mainly the second half.

Brees' release and smarts helps to keep him clean, no doubt.

But every time I see the Saints play I can’t get over how well the Oline plays and how huge a pocket Brees consistently has.

Another point about the Giants pass rush vs. the Packs Oline is that if AR escapes a few times and runs for some nice gains then that could help out with protection if the Giants have to worry about containment.

I think our Dline is playing other-worldly and that any Oline is in deep trouble this postseason but Rodgers running away from them worries me.

I heard alot of good things about him when he was drafted, and there was lots of talk about him possibly being a breakout star before this season began. I see he has 3 INT, which isn’t bad at all. Do you think the Giants could pick on him, or could he be a difference-maker in the passing game for you guys?

Good.

He came out of the lockout on fire. Then, Nick Collins got injured, and Burnett broke his hand, which really hurt us. He seems good in pass coverage, but I can’t recall that I’ve ever seen him in a 1 on 1 situation. He usually plays centerfield for us. BTW, he played with a cast on his hand for quite a few games, which negated the ability to intercept the ball. My opinion? He was a great pick for us, and he’ll be starting at safety for the next few years. Not to mention, our APC author just interviewed him, which was nice, because we don’t get interviews much.

Burnett's been solid

He had a rough stretch where he broke his hand & had to play with a club, so that affected his INTs & caused a few missed tackles (tough to wrap up when you only have one hand). We traded up over the Bears (who drafted S Major Wright instead) to get him, so the scouts obviously saw something in him. Peprah’s the S to go after, not Burnett.

Haha

It’s been in my signature all year. It’s really just a bad attempt at sarcasm, lol. I love Flynn, but there’s no way he’s on Rodgers level.. Yet. As for Flynn, he deserves to go out and start. The problem is should we let him leave in FA and be happy with a compensatory pick? Or should we attempt to franchise him, then trade him, which could net us a couple extra high-round picks, much like the Patriots did with Matt Cassel? The drawback to that, is that our Salary Cap is pretty much slayed if he decides to sign it, which would be top 5 QB money combined. In fact, he’d be making more money than Rodgers… As the backup. LOL.

What game was the biggest win for your team this season in your opinion?

by Gjennings85 on Jan 11, 2012 8:54 PM EST reply actions

well... depends on when you'd say the "season" ends

both of our last 2 regular season games were playoff games for us, we needed to beat both the Jets and Cowboys to finish out the season to make the playoffs. The first game against the cowboys a few weeks before that was almost as big, basically if we lost that game we wouldnt control our destiny (and would not have made it, as it turns out)… so any of those three would fit.

Before that do or die timeframe I’d either go with the first matchup with the Eagles, which was a “revenge” game for the collapse game a year ago, or the win in NE, beating Brady in NE, breaking their 20-something home game win stretch.

As you can tell, its been a pretty wild ride this season, especially the last month+

How about for the Packers… are any of the games considered “big games” when you knew you had a top seed in the playoffs 2 months ago? Any single game have particular importance?

by Matt dubs on Jan 11, 2012 9:29 PM EST up reply actions

Week 1 against the Saints was unbelievable huge.

When you look back in hindsight, it was just a monumental game. Also smashing the Kitties on Thanksgiving, and winning against you guys in week 13. Wrapping up the #1 seed was also a key win, although it was pretty easy to beat Josh McCown, so I wouldn’t count that one.

our biggest losses in retrospect were the Seahawks loss (Eli threw 3 INTs, including one on the final drive to win the game… I believe this pick was actually Cruz’s fault, he cut off his route, this was early in his season. People forget he didnt play much at all last year, and only played this year starting week 3.)

The other big losses were the 2 redskins game, niether game was really close either… very upsetting and confusing.

by Matt dubs on Jan 11, 2012 9:31 PM EST up reply actions

As of now...

It’s the Jets game. It showed the team what the D is able to do. Maybe the last Packers game the because it’s telling them that they can hang with you guys. If, and that’s a big IF, we win this game and and face the niners then the last game becomes the biggest game, told them that they could hang with them. IF, it comes to a Giants Pats game then the last one is the biggest game. What I fear is a Giants Saints game. We got our asses handed to us in just about every phase of the game, and that is the one game that I fear that our pass rush can’t bail us out. We don’t match up well against the Saints at all. Two, count them, two all-pro guards… our interior pass rush will have problems allowing Brees to step up and make his throws.

Sorry I went off on a tangent there. Liquid libations and all… but yhea, the Jet’s game that’s the one.

Not impossible to get pressure though

When we played New Orleans, Fewell decided to feature the three man rush in third and long situations, and that offense will eat you alive when you do that, which is exactly what happened. The other problem is that our offense stalled early, and when you can’t get any kind of clock-killing drives, you put yourself in a bad spot.

Giants played soft zone coverage, which is exactly how the Saints ripped us apart in 2009. No adjustments either. As fans, we just had to sit there and take it, like some sort of twisted movie.

The Giants have had about as many “must-win” scenarios a team could in one season. Lost some of them and won others.

As far as wins go, I’d say going into New England and beating the Pats. That was a quality win. Hard to look at a bunch of close games and call yourself a contender without a win like that somewhere in the mix.
