New York Giants Notes: Greg Jones Edition
Good morning, New York Giants' fans. The NFL season kicks off Thursday night with the Green Bay Packers facing the New Orleans Saints, so let's see what is making news as the Giants opener against the Washington Redskins approaches.
Rookie middle linebacker Greg Jones, the likely starter on Sunday with Jonathan Goff down for the season with a torn ACL, had never practiced with the first-team defense before Wednesday.
"I will be as ready as I possibly can be, given the opportunity and be a leader. I'm just trying to gain the respect of my teammates and I believe that's what I am going to do," Jones said. "Everybody is saying you can do this. Believe in yourself and we will follow your lead and make the right call."
Jones was a two-time All-American at Michigan State who fell to the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft after what NFL talent evaluators saw as a sub-par senior season. The Giants have not said whether Jones or another player will make the defensive calls.
When I spoke to Jones prior to training camp, we talked about what he would bring to the Giants. Leadership was one of the things he mentioned.
"I know that the Giants fans will see a player who [is] hard-working, who will step up when the time is called upon, who will be a leader," Jones said. "I'm always the type of guy that just leads. I don't mean to do it on purpose, I don't mean to step on people's toes or anything like that. I feel the need to step up and then I do it. I do the very best job I can do."
Giants' veteran safety Deon Grant expressed confidence in Jones.
"Talk to him about the conversations him and I have been having since I've been here. I like him a lot," Grant said. "When I first came in and saw what he was doing in training camp, I'm like who is this guy? And then I found out exactly who it was, I remembered exactly what he did in college. The guy was a two or three-time All American. You don't make that by going out and making a few plays. That means you were out there playing some ball. I have a lot of confidence in him. He's very smart and very physical."
Giants' fans can only hope that, given the short time he has had to prepare, that Jones' 'very best' will be good enough.
The Giants worked out veteran linebackers on Wednesday. including former Giants Kawika Mitchell and Chase Blackburn. Reports were that Keith Bulluck did not attend the workout. The Giants are not expected to sign a linebacker until after the Washington game. Once rosters are set, most NFL teams try to get through Week 1 before signing veteran free agents. That is because signing them prior to the first game means their contract is guaranteed for the season. Sign them after Week 1 and that is not the case.
Peyton Manning won't play in the Indianapolis Colts' season opener, meaning Eli Manning will become the active quarterback with the longest streak of consecutive starts (104). Say what you want about Eli, the Giants do benefit from his durability.
"I think that's always the goal, to be there on Sunday. Sometimes it can't happen. Some circumstances come up that you can't prevent. I try to do everything I can. Make sure in the offseason I do all my workouts and running - they prevent the little nicks and knacks. And try to get all of the treatment when you do get banged up, get the treatments and do everything you can to get back on the field," Manning said.
Giants wide receiver/kick returner Devin Thomas, a former Redskins has talked in the past about how Washington coach Mike Shanahan influenced him. Shanahan was asked about Thomas on Wednesday.
"I got to know Devin pretty good and he is a great person. He has a lot of ability and I am going to wish him well because I am fond of the guy and the way he handled himself and the way he worked," Shanahan said. "I just told Devin that if he wants to stay in this league, he is going to have to be a pro. It is going to be a full time job for you, it can't be a part time job. I talked about his ability and what he had to do to stay in this league and obviously he is doing it. ... for him to make the Giants team shows you he is doing things the right way."

Manning And Sanchez: Two Established New York QBs Is A Rare Occurrence - SB Nation New York
The New York Giants and New York Jets both have established quarterbacks that they're completely confident in, with neither team in any hurry to find a successor. And that has only happened a couple of other times in the 51 seasons that the two franchises have coexisted. Arguments have been raging the past month or so over who is better -- Eli Manning or Mark Sanchez -- but each team is glad to have the one they have.

Let's hope jones is descent, he is a sixth round pick.
Other players will have to step it up, especially the defensive line. They have to get to the QB.
and many more have not
the reality is yes there are late round guys who turn out great, but that isn’t where the odds land. We just have to hope against the odds.
The odds are against getting a great player in any round
"That's mostly fans who say that kind of stuff and they really don't understand the process. We have good players on the team. We're not looking to go out and make every sexy splash that can be made. We make solid football decisions. That's been happening for a long time," Reese said
History tells us
The odds are better the higher the round. Anecdotal evidence of exceptions to the rule exist but the reality is there are more high round players in the league than low round players.
Tom Brady as a 6th propelled the Pats
If Jones is very good (forget HOF) it’s a huge boost to us, like AB
"That's mostly fans who say that kind of stuff and they really don't understand the process. We have good players on the team. We're not looking to go out and make every sexy splash that can be made. We make solid football decisions. That's been happening for a long time," Reese said
See that's how most great teams get built
Examples 70s Steelers multiple HOF players after the first round, Pats HOF QB late in the draft, 80s 49ers tons of late round gems, 90s Cowboys the triplets were all 1s, but check out the great players picked later.
Most teams that really maintain excellence must make the late rounders and UDFAs count
"That's mostly fans who say that kind of stuff and they really don't understand the process. We have good players on the team. We're not looking to go out and make every sexy splash that can be made. We make solid football decisions. That's been happening for a long time," Reese said
You are missing the point by a country mile
I’m not asking for more anecdotal evidence, I’m saying that is what you are providing. Yes, you can sit here and pull out names that turned out stellar from late rounds or UDFA, but if you sat down and really did the actual numbers the truth would reveal itself. There are always the Kurt Warner’s going from bagging groceries to winning a SB, but there are far more of those late round and UDFA guys who don’t make a team, bounce team to team, play just specials, or play just as reserves. Statistically speaking odds are better the higher the draft round. That is the simple mathematical, factual reality. Like said, let’s hope against the odds, but lets not act like those aren’t the reality of the odds.
Let's find out
I chose a completely random draft year, 1998
1st round: 10 pro bowlers
2nd: 9 pro bowlers
3rd: 7
4th: 1
5th: 1
6th: 3
7th: 0
Undrafted: 3
So the first 3 rounds seem to be the best. But that still means there were 22 guys in the first round alone who “bounce team to team, play just specials, or play just as reserves.”
Self-praise is for losers. Be a winner. Stand for something. Always have class, and be humble.
-John Madden
Now pay attention
We are talking odds, which your random draft year proves nicely. You can get good players and bad players in any round. Never did I say first round equals gold and 7th round equals fail, but the reality is the ODDS are better that the earlier round player turns out better. That means odds are against us having four pro bowl linebackers from one year sixth round and lower. That means we need to hope against the odds that at least some of these guys end up being the exception because they are what we’ve got.
He was a sixth round pick
who played like a lottery pick in college, that sixth round nonsense holds no weight when it comes to Greg

Jones a player
Many of us on this board figured he might give Goff a run for the MLB slot anyway.
Goff did two things the NYG will miss. He played the run well and called the D plays.
I am confident that Jones can stop the run. He is smart and a good tackler.
I am OK with Boley calling the plays but frankly, I worry about Boley more than I worry about Jones in their new roles.
Goff is a class act who did everything the NYG asked and was improving yearly. I feel bad for him, esp in his contract year, and hope he recovers fast and well.
No disrespect to Goff but in Greg Jones, the NYG may have found their Mike for the next 6-8 years.

But a healthy Goff with a continued upward progress as he has been doing will not be moved out of the MLB spot by most anybody IMHO.

I like Goff, but I don't try to create progress curves for guys
He played well last season, but was pretty much lost in zone covg. That was to be expected. It’s the harder part of the MLBs job in our D. In preseason he looked better but not great.
Jones on the other hand has certain quickness and reaction speed that can make him a very very good player. But I think that everyone, myself included, wanted to see what he did on field this year.
"That's mostly fans who say that kind of stuff and they really don't understand the process. We have good players on the team. We're not looking to go out and make every sexy splash that can be made. We make solid football decisions. That's been happening for a long time," Reese said
Disagree.
Goff, in all likely-hood, would have reached his peak of growth this season. He still would have been an average starting MLB. If Jones showed the coaches he was a break out player waiting to happen, they might not resign Goff with Jones waiting in the wings. Goff was a good LB, but your either blinded by your like for him, or you just simply over value him like some others on here do. I like Goff, good heady player, but you just simply don’t know that had Goff had just an OK year, and Jones showed in limited time that he was going to break out, Goff might be gone anyway.

If he was traded at this point his NY numbers would match up with Kent Graham.

Best guess is our 3 safety set will come into play quite a bit starting this week. Just wondering why there has been no action on the secondary fa market? Seems like finding a nickel corner to allow them to keep rolle deep should be a priority for when DG becomes the #3 lb?

Yea im sure we will see the 3 safety thing but not with Grant at LB
With Paysinger and Jaquian Williams who can cover any and everything, there is no need to drop a safety down to LB…..Rolle remains at the Slot and Grant slides to a traditional Safety.

Greg Jones
Greg Jones is a “Football Player”. The Giants got a 1st round talent in the 6th round.
I think they got a first round football player
With later round physical skills. It is a real shame that he won’t get the chance to take advantage of a year’s worth of professional coaching and physical training before getting thrown into the starters roll.
To me, he strikes me as a guy like Toomer or Tiki. He seem likes the type who will want to have a long career in the NFL, and will dedicate himself 24/7 to it. He’s just not getting the chance to put himself in that physical shape before being asked to be a starter. I just hope he holds up and has a chance to develop into the player I think he can be.
time will tell.
Didn’t we all think last year the Phillip Dillard was a good pick?
you come at the king you best not miss...
No
I thought he was a head scratcher, I figured they saw something I didn’t.
But that’s the nature of the draft, by the time you get to pick 100 every player has some big questions.
"That's mostly fans who say that kind of stuff and they really don't understand the process. We have good players on the team. We're not looking to go out and make every sexy splash that can be made. We make solid football decisions. That's been happening for a long time," Reese said
True for you
but there was a big group of folks on here touting Dillard as the next big thing at MLB for us. You know well enough there a certain folks here who will banter on about all of our draft picks being great future stars from all seven rounds. Haven’t we already been hearing the same thing about the “fantastic four”?
What I remember is that some thought he might turn out well
I tend to be a wait and see guy. I liked the draft on paper this year, I thought they got 7 guys that really fit what we are trying to do.
What I saw, Jones in the preseason games was often the best guy on the field. That doesn’t mean much, cause 1/2 of em are now bagging groceries or working at Best Buy, but it’s a start.
Remember this crap happens to some team every year, but look at the Colts. Some are saying Peyton will miss the whole season, and a Doc I know said that surgery in that area might never heal right. If he misses the year, they get a top 10 pick, if he’s done, that franchise is up the creek, they arent ready to transition.

Not to be a jerk
but I think the physical shape comment is odd.
Maybe you can clarify what you mean.
the guy is a specimen and I have seen several images of him this year and he looks pretty good to me
+1
I think the biggest hurdle a rookie must clear is the pace and mental aspect of the NFL compared to college. Physically…he’s no slouch.
Let's agree to disagree - right after you admit that you're completely wrong.
If no one is perfect does that mean I do not exist?
He said skills not shape
One of the knocks on Jones is he is both small and slow. Usually if you have a smaller linebacker that size loss is compensated for with athleticism and agility. On the flip you might have a bigger bruiser who gives up a little in speed and athleticism. One of the reasons Jones fell in the draft is he is short and light so he isn’t seen as a big bruiser, yet he was mostly an in the box tight spaces LB that didn’t show much in his college game to tell folks he would have the athleticism needed to compensate.
Good thing those scouting reports were poorly researched
Jones at 6-1 245 is really solid, compare that to Herzlich an acknowledged bruiser at 6-4 245 (I’ve round the Wts down). That means Jones is more compact and beefier.
It also means that it will be harder for Jones to get bigger (he has a smaller frame). Many teams (and they are not usually winners) worry a ton about that stuff. Jones is plenty big and strong to play MLB in the NFL. He is also very quick, and instinctual (I think its because he is a great student of the game). That means that his below average 40 time is less important because he starts running 1/4 second faster.
This stuff was borne out in the preseason. Please note that I haven’t said he’s a slam dunk all universe player. I’m just saying that he’s shown already that he was drafted too late, and he has a great chance to become a player.
"That's mostly fans who say that kind of stuff and they really don't understand the process. We have good players on the team. We're not looking to go out and make every sexy splash that can be made. We make solid football decisions. That's been happening for a long time," Reese said
Jones has a high football IQ...

by oldschoolblue64 on Sep 8, 2011 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions
At the combine, Jones was measured
At a hair under 6ft, and 240, yet had very mediocre drill numbers. A lot of teams saw those numbers and immediately dropped him off their boards, regardless of his awesome production in college.
My point was more that he's as bruising as Herzlich and most others
People saw the height and said small, he isn’t small, he’s thick
"That's mostly fans who say that kind of stuff and they really don't understand the process. We have good players on the team. We're not looking to go out and make every sexy splash that can be made. We make solid football decisions. That's been happening for a long time," Reese said
Sounds a bit like a guy we had on our squad.........
…..AP. I’ll take AP with better physical tools, anyday. That’s what I believe Jones is. Add his incredibly high motor and he could very well be a huge upgrade over Pierce. Only time will tell if we’re actually that lucky.
Bleeding Blue since 1962
Jones is under 6'
He was 240 at the combine and that was after packing on weight. He played at a heavier weight his senior year then he had previously and many took the opinion he played worse at the higher weight.
The thing people like about Herz’s size i more his height than his weight. I’m not sure he is pegged as a bruiser. His combination of height and athleticism though makes him intriguing from the aspect of ability to match up well with TEs.
I hope the guy turns out to be a baller. I’m just explaining why he dropped in the draft. He was considered to be a combo of small and slow, which isn’t going to help a lot. He didn’t help himself much through the draft process to change that stigma. Comparitively Colin McCarthy entered the draft process with a similar stigma being 6’1" 238 lbs and being seen as slow in coverage. He then displayed some good athleticism in the senior bowl and combine. Result he went in the 4th while Jone dropped to the 6th.
They should time LBs running the 40 sideways...
because the only time they have to run in a straight line is when chasing a back thats breaking away for a touchdown…40 times are overrated for most positions…only really important for RB, WR, CB (and they’re running backwards or sideways half the time too), etc…same thing for O linemen…if you’re quick enough to move 2-3 steps sideways really fast, who cares if you run a 5+ 40 time?
Later round Physical skills??
Hmmm sounds like London Fletcher’s scouting write up.

There have been smaller, less athletic and lower round picks then Jones
and they’ve been successful. Jones is bigger then he was in his college days, tho that might not be the best thing since the reason he was thought of as a 1-2nd round guy was cuz of his speed, then he gained 10lbs and lost a step.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
Lets not forget Greg Jones played with basically NOBODY around him

the front 4 he played with isn't a bunch of nobodies.
not every good defense in college has a bunch of NFL guys, tho they have one very good NFL DT in Worthy.

Exactly it wasnt Jones per se, it was the play of the Whole Defense
When you watch the tape you dont see him not doing the things he did the year before. He was slightly off but no big deal, i look more to the guys around him, they played very poorly.

Jones was also slower due to being bigger, like I said.

Brilliant deduction watson but his weight didnt hamper him as much as the
bums around him. Like i said.

yea...the same "bums" that were around him the previous season
just walk away.

In all fairness
im a hawkeye fan so ive watched jones play every year and Msu was nowhere near as good on D as the years before and i remember when iowa played them that the announcer couldnt stop talking about how teams studied him and wanted to do everything possible to keep him out of the play so i do believe alot of his drop off was from a weaker D around him and Teams Paying ALOT of attention to him
we will never win the superblow!!!!!
TMFS!!!!!
It's just too hard to make that deduction year to year
We’re is teammates worse? Was it the offense (fewer leads)? Was it the opponents (If they got better and could block many of his teammates with one guy, it meant more doubles for Jones)?
But his size growth is documented, and it takes time to regain the straight line speed that you used to have, as the running muscles grow and stretch to compensate for the heavier load.
Besides who cares, he looked plenty quick, plenty fast in preseason.
"That's mostly fans who say that kind of stuff and they really don't understand the process. We have good players on the team. We're not looking to go out and make every sexy splash that can be made. We make solid football decisions. That's been happening for a long time," Reese said
it isn't gonna help Jones if Eli throws a zillion INTs this season
Let's agree to disagree - right after you admit that you're completely wrong.

Unless Jones catches a bajillion interceptions
Self-praise is for losers. Be a winner. Stand for something. Always have class, and be humble.

Ror don't worry about his speed
He looked very comfy at his new size, very quick
Reports I’ve read indicate that it can take 3 years for an adult body to recapture speed lost to frame growth and muscle growth. He doesn’t look over developed, and I think he’ll be back at his old speed next season.
But it would be hard to play the middle in our D at 225-230 (Boley plays at 230 and we see what happens to him when an OL gets a free run at him)

Let's remember something...
What number is Greg Jones wearing??? He is wearing it for a reason! The greatness of Carson will show through Greg Jones. I believe he will do the job for us. He is a football player as we know by his accomplishments at State. 2 time All-American and hundreds of tackles on teams that we just OK. He knows what he has to do…play ball!
He just needs to pretend
He’s playing Michigan this weekend.
"Sometimes you make a mistake and you get hit in the head." - Eli Manning
Jones...
Obviously it is not best case scenario starting a 6th round pick in the middle for week 1, but honestly being a 6th round pick or not I’m behind this kid. Everything I’ve heard out of camp he’s been impressive and I like everything the kid has to say, obviously we don’t know for sure what he’ll end up being, but as of right now theres not a rookie linebacker in the league I’d rather have start for us.
Can we all collectively bargain not to be douche bags ?

I just hope the fans at Giants Stadium back him 100%, can’t boo him, got to get in the trenches with him.

Jones will make mistakes
Heck LT made mistakes as a rookie. But I’m saying it now, by mid season, QBs will want to make sure that the blitz pick up accounts for him. He brings it, on every play, he’s rarely trailing a play, so he doesn’t have to over pursue and when he finishes it’s with authority. QBs hate the helmet in the rib cage (who likes it?)

Most certainly. One advantage I'd say Jones has over Goff is pass coverage.
Jones is much more rangy than Goff IMO….but Jones will have some troubling shedding blocks, so he ain’t going to be that great in run defense. That being said, he’s behind Canty and Anvil, so idk how much of a problem thats going to be.
Most of the mistakes i can see him making is disengaging from blockers and subsequently taking poor angles in run defense.

I can see him getting fooled
They will run a bunch of misdirection at him, hope he gets caught in the wash
The calmer he stays the better he’ll do. And Fewell will help protect him on the back end

I've watched tape of Jones......
and shedding blocks is not a problem for him. Most of the time he’ll hold a blocker to one side and toss hiom out of the way to make a play. The kid is STROING!!!. The only issue I see him having is getting used to the speed of the game and learning the plays to the point of playing being second nature.

Hell Yeah lol damn u have picked that up and ran with it i have to say im very proud us hawk fans can come up with something that sticks lol have u had a chance to go to BHGP and read the story on him and how that came to be
we will never win the superblow!!!!!
TMFS!!!!!
I remember those days,
when joy in life meant lower grades…
I'll just say this regarding the piece:
Jones will be fine. Obviously he’s going to have to adjust on the fly, with this baptism by fire. But he’ll be OK. He’ll improve, too, as he progresses through the season. Ever heard the statement “Live and Learn”? That’s what he’ll be doing. He’ll just get more confident as he makes more plays.
On another note, Dallas may be valued at $1.85 billion, but that’s a far cry from being WORTH $1.85 billion.
Quit playing not to lose. Start playing to WIN! Geeez...
Really excited to see Jones
of course I did not want to see it happen this way (hate seeing season ending injuries), but he is getting his chance. There will be growing pains and offenses will take advantage of a young rookie in the middle but lets hope his high football IQ takes over at that point.
So happy football is back tonight, don’t even know who I’m gonna pull for tonight.

gotta go with the Pack
As much as I hate that the Giants will have to beat them to win this year…I think they are a team that has personality, swagger, and fight.
The Saints have Brees – who must be horrible because he threw 22 INTs last year
Let's agree to disagree - right after you admit that you're completely wrong.
If no one is perfect does that mean I do not exist?
true
Giants play both teams this year so I was conflicted on who I go for. I won’t really care who wins or loses I guess.
And how dare you insult Drew, stats show 21 of those INTs were not his fault… just because he is Drew Brees

Where are my comments on Jones?
Greg Jones will bring it and serve notice in the NFL
"Hello...you play to win the game."
Thank God
Football is finally here!!! I’m glad we have a lighter first half of the schedule to get people acclimated to their position. Hopefully mistakes made by people stepping up due to injury won’t cost us games and they can learn from them. I can only hope we are 5-1 going into the break and our defense gets comfortable for the final 10 games and we can come out on top the NFC East. Trusting in Reese, Coughlin, and Fewell to make it happen!!!

Jones will be fine.
He made a lot of plays when given the chance this summer. He just seemed to be in the right place all the time, despite his supposed speed issues. Instincts are more important than running speed. I’d rather have a guy run a tenth slower, but not have to stand around thinking about where to go. And it doesn’t hurt that he play behind a great line and in front of an extremely strong set of safeties.
As TC said, I think his mistakes will be from aggressiveness. I’m good with that as long as he learns and doesn’t repeat the same mistakes.
I hope Jones is half the player
Some people are making him out to be. Let’s remember he played against 2nd teamers during the bulk of the preseason.
He might be a player. You gotta love the enthusiasm and fire he hows. Even if we’ve caught some lightning in a bottle late in the draft with Jones,, we’ll see some mistakes from him as he learns the position in Fewell’s complicated D. And Fewell will do his best to protect him early on.
All we can do is play him and find out if he is up to the task. I’d likie a back up plan though. I think Mitchell gets signed 10 minutes after the Skins game no matter how Jones plays. We’ll need some depth besides Herz and the experience might be needed anyway if the rookies get overwhelmed.
So I’ll buy the Greg Jones lovefest on here till it’s proven wrong, but I think we’d be wise to wait till he shows us what he’s got against a 1st team offense with a real game plan ( Skins aren’t world class but Shanny should not be under estimated).
Go Giants!
I think he played much of the Pats 1st team. Just sayin
I may not be the most noble of men but in a town of lepers, im the one with the most fingers.

True
And I hope all the love is justified. It just seems a little over the top at this point. But I guess that is what fans should be saying right now. It beats the hell out of the “We were a .500 team before the injuries” nonsense that some people post.
Go Giants!
I can't help but think of Zach Thomas when I see Greg Jones.

No worries
Everything will be ok. We’ve finally got some real talent at the LB spot and everybody is panicking over the loss of Goff? Forgive me if I appear to be a little condescending, but what the F has Jon Goff really done? Good at stopping the run but he’s not the top tackler on the team? Really! A 4-3 MLB not being the leading tackler on the team is supposed to be good? AP and Armstead lead the team in tackles most of the years they played for us.
I’m gonna say this now and take my lumps: Greg Jones is an upgrade over Goff, plain and simple. Villify me here if he’s not the top tackler by week 6.
P.S. When have you ever heard the term “mean streak” associated with Goff? You will with Jones.

I am so annoyed
by anyone who tries to tell me that Sanchez is as good as Eli. Let alone make an argument for being better. Its not even close & noone can tell me otherwise.
As for Jones, I’m excited to see what he can do in fulltime action. I was very high on him coming outta college & after watching the combine. I was ecstatic after we actually picked him. We’ll experience some growing pains, but before we know it, Jones will be the long term solution for the MLB woes. His future is very bright.
