Jonathan Goff Out For Year, Kawika Mitchell To Be Signed

I have no idea how or when this happened, but the New York Giants have announced that starting middle linebacker Jonathan Goff has suffered a torn ACL and is out for the season. The team will apparently sign former Giant Kawika Mitchell to take his roster spot.

This is a huge loss. I guess this makes rookie Greg Jones, the sixth-round pick and Mike Farley's favorite Giant, the starting middle linebacker Sunday against the Washington Redskins.

More on this when the details become available.

Coughlin was talking about the long injury list that accompanied the 4-12 record in Fassel’s final season, when he said that injuries can be a "cancer," and suggested that some players get comfortable in the training room. by TNYFBG on Sep 6, 2011 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

When you collide...

and let’s say your cleats get caught in the turf somehow, then the ACL is vulnerable. It just might be the turf, but I was under the impression it was the newer variety that was made from ground up tires. That turf gives, and it’s hard to catch your cleats on it.

im dissapointed but I have to bring this up

Ive wondered this for years. & maybe Im just frustrated & exaggerating but, is it any coincidence that we are one of the few teams that do ZERO live hitting in training camp, yet we continually get blasted by the injury gods? maybe if we were a little tougher & used to getting knocked around, we might be able to handle the awkward collisions. Or maybe we wouldnt be co concerned with not tackling someone that we’d collide in a “natural” way. Or am I way off base on this?

Gonna be a long, long season.

Goff is a premier run stopping LB up the middle. This is just as big of a blow as losing T2, if you ask me. At least with T2 we have adequate CBs to replace him that we know will be able to step in and make an impact.

Losing Goff? We have no idea how well Jones will be able to handle the NFL as a rookie, let alone call plays and run the defense.

Silver Lining

Horrible news but i’m also excited to see what our young LB’s can do like Jones and Herzlich. This is from The Blue Screen last week: Do you expect LB Mark Herzlich to make the team? You know, that’s a tough one. The Giants have a lot of LBs they like (stop laughing). More importantly they have a lot of young LBs who were draft picks and they aren’t likely to give up on many of those. I think Herzlich’s best bet is to make the practice squad, but who knows what will happen if he plays well tonight?

2 monthsago I was expecting Jones, Herzlich and Willams to be the starting linebackers ,in a year or 2.Now its looks like Paysinger,Jones ,and Herzlich may be starting sooner then that. This is a blessing in disguise.Last year everbody wanted Mclain to be drafted to replace Goff, well now we got Jones. This is good news guys.Just like when Sintim got hurt.I feel bad for those guys but it’s additon by subtraction.Giants are better off,and by the way Mitchell is great in the lockeroom and the Giants need leaders now.

NO need to wory IMO

The only guy Giants lost that actually produced was Terrell Thomas. Even though Giants fans were huge on Joseph, who never showed anything in regular season yet, and Goff (who is just another guy at best) this is all replacable talent. OK if Tuck goes down, then you can hit the panic button

the truth

is in the middle. he had a very very good camp, and he finished the year well. most guys have been screaming for a new MLB for awhile now (that’s why we took dillard i suppose, but remember Ayers mania?) even when Goff was playing. he was good, talented, smart, NOT The best in the league, and NOT as damaging as TT

the problem is this: you have to allocate injuries along the way, and to start like this sucks. i mean, it feels like week 13 with all the guys we have (potentially impactful guys) done for the year. if we don’t get lucky for the rest of the year, we will have practice squad guys on our starters on xmas eve vs the jets

The whole D-line had a good year last year, Coefield, Canty, Tuck, Oi, etc.. That’s why I think the biggest loss was in FA (Coefield), and in T2… Otherwise, depth was lost, which hurts, but I don’t see the Giants doomed

All in all, I think he had a great year last year and that this probably hurts us more because he is an intelligent signal caller who is familiar with our defense, not because we won’t be able to replace his physical abilities.

Justin Tuck doesn't get much coverage and he's one of the top 5 pass rushers in the NFL

by Rorschach44 on Sep 6, 2011 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions

hell no

its painfully obvious that Tuck doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. If you want to stay delusioned to say he’s mentioned with the best in the game like he should, then that’s on you.

Goff’s numbers said he was one of the better run stopping LBs in the NFL last year. That it wasn’t in the mainstream is irrelevant…contrarian would be to say that “oh hey he plays in NY and he doesn’t get pub he must be overrated”.

That gives the ignorant ass NY media waaaaaaaay too much credit.

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

by Rorschach44 on Sep 6, 2011 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions

No

A contrarian would say, everyone thinks he’s good so he must not be. I highly doubt a contrarian would have anything to say about a player that everyone else is ambivalent about, but that’s neither here nor there.

I guess we differ on what “coverage” means. Tuck is mentioned regularly as one of the best in the game. He doesn’t draw a lot of attention to himself, so maybe there’s something to that, but I don’t think anyone in the mainstream media is overlooking Tuck’s abilities.

by baadfish on Sep 6, 2011 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions

He is, now.

Tuck is always overlooked in the mainstream. All of a sudden ESPN got put on to Jason Tuck and they had to investigate.

And many think Goff had a good year last year, mainly due to his run stopping. To just write off an article is just being contrarian.

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

by Rorschach44 on Sep 6, 2011 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I love this.

You: “Tuck is constantly overlooked by the media.”
Me: “Well, actually he gets a lot of media coverage…”
You: “Well yea … now!”

Dude, that line of debate is ridiculous.

And like I said above, whenever we talk about Goff, all we do is quote one article that utilizes a metric that nobody else but the writers of that particular website use. I don’t know how it’s calculated, what it means or how it translates to actual play but I do know that the NY Media Market does a good job covering actual superstars on NY based teams. Sure, Goff might be an exception, but it’s pretty unlikely.

The schedule isn’t too bad (or at least, it appears that way now) until the second half, so if one or more of the new guys is going to step up and do something they should have a great chance. Prevention

Read this online! Athletes can reduce their risk of ACL injuries by performing training drills that require balance, power and agility. Adding plyometric exercises, such as jumping, and balance drills helps improve neuromuscular conditioning and muscular reactions and ultimately shows a decrease in the risk of ACL injury. Many team physicians now routinely recommend an ACL conditioning program. The Santa Monica ACL Prevention Project developed an ACL Injury Prevention Program specifically for female soccer players. This 15-minute training program incorporates balance, agility and performance drills into the warm up phase of training and practice……….Sounds like something CAN be done to help prevent ACL injurys……the Question is IS there anything being done?

Mason Foster vs. Greg Jones

I really wanted Mason Foster in the draft, especially over Ayers. When he was there in the third, I had hoped that Reese would take him. Instead he took Jernigan. He got Greg Jones later in the draft so I thought it was a wash.

Well, Foster is starting at MLB for Tampa Bay. They let Ruud go because of Foster. It’s not ideal but if Foster can start, then why can’t Jones? I know that Jones hasn’t been preparing to be the starter so it’s a lot to throw at him 5 days before Week 1. I know that Tampa Bay doesn’t have the same Super Bowl expectations that the Giants have. Nonetheless, Jones is as experienced and NFL-ready as a rookie can be. He was a 4-year starter in the B1G and was always known for being a heady player.

We aren’t getting any studs off of the waiver wire. We’ll have to make do with Jones.

He has a whole year to recover before the start of 2012. But by then he may have a tough time unseating the incumbent. We just dumped two linebacker draft picks. Coach must be pretty comfortable with the new guys.

What's the fuss about Goff???

It’s not like Goff is some All Pro or soon to be one……the guy has done nothing in his 2 seasons and it’s time to get a good look at the young guys. Jones, Herzlich, and Williams could turn out to be stars. Let’s find out now and stop with all the ‘panicing’. Kiwi should be in the DE mix and not an LB and that will come to the forefrunt sooner rather than later. I wish Goff a speedy recovery and all but I hope by the time he comes back next year the Giants will have discovered one or 2 of these young LB’s as rising stars!!!!

Just because we want them to be great doesn’t mean they will be.

Goff was actually pretty damn solid last year, especially against the run.

The Future is Now...

To me, I am more upset at the loss of Austin and Prince than TT and Goff….

I don’t see the situation as dire. TT had a ton of tackles because he was targeted, Goff in my view was holding a spot nobody could win. And he stinks on specials.

I say bring on the rooks. I don’t like seeing these guys lost to injury, but I think there is a bright side to it. I love Kavika also even as a fossil. He is a better blitzing linebacker than any we have and he plays forward.

Goff was holding a position for whoever our future MLB will be. He has no football instincts, he is a robot who guesses the hole.

Its a loss, I’m sorry he is hurt. But now it gives us a chance to find his replacement.

that's debatable..

There might be too much pressure on him, since the Giants are competitive, and he’ll be starting as a rookie. But he will get a lot of playing time, which is theoretically better for him, so we’ll see.

by schmosterballs92 on Sep 6, 2011 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Thing about this injury is that our depth is devastated.

With the exception of our defensive ends, nobody’s production was even close to irreplaceable.

Its just that when you have 3 CBs, 1 DT, 2 LBs go down to season ending injuries, and 1 rookie CB gone for 4 weeks, and a DE gone for 4 weeks, yeah, it hurts big time.

It’s not so much losing Goff as it is just the piling on at this point. This is not to take away from what Goff means to us, though. He’s a real good player, but I think Jones/Mitchell can come close to what he brings to the field.

Placate the Football Gods by going without beer until Sunday. On Sunday, fill a glass with your most favored brew. Walk outdoors and the first person you come upon who is wearing a Cowboy, Eagle or Redskin jersey, pore the full untasted glass over their head and say the incantation “ijiswishicouldsipabit” and all will be well…

The second option is to trade Osi for a servicable MLB and TE.

In Reese we Trust

Gets put to the test.

Let’s face it, we all second guess JR from time to time (or at least some of us do). He has followed a fairly strict value-based drafting philosophy, which has led to him drafting two DT’s two years in a row round 2, DE’s when he seemingly didn’t need one (JPP), a slew of mid round LBs for a couple years, and DBs with high picks. This has led to the following: despite all their injuries (you could field a pretty damn good team with the guys who are out!), you can envision a situation where the Giant D is still awesome. Yes, some things need to fall into place (no more injuries, good play from our stand-in nickels, Jones playing about his draft grade for a rook, etc.) Yet, none of this seems far-fetched.

It really is a validation of the drafting philosophy. You never know what will happen injuries-wise, so you take the BPA. Our depth has taken a big hit, but I still like our starting 11 on D, no matter who is starting at MLB.

by NorthwestFan on Sep 6, 2011 8:11 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed

I like BPA drafting. Worst comes to worst, you have a piece you can move for a similar player of need. Losing 2 starters hurts but I think our defense will still be formidable this year.

Greg Jones

I personally love this description of him in the draft section on the NFL site. I’ll take a guy with “rare intangibles” any day. Given our D line, i think his weaknesses (e.g., when teams run at him, which means running first into Anvil and Canty) may be hidden.

 Strengths
Jones is highly productive, extremely durable and has rare intangibles. Displays great range versus the run. Relentless in pursuit, using his hands to slip blockers. Closes on the ball-carrier in a hurry and can lay the wood. Rushes the quarterback from every angle. Blitzes up the middle, comes off the edge and even puts his hand down.

Weaknesses
Lacks bulk and strength. Susceptible when teams run downhill right at him. Blockers can overwhelm him with power or get into his legs with cut blocks. Doesn’t always take most direct path in pursuit. Has a tough time staying with quicker backs and tight ends in man coverage.

by NorthwestFan on Sep 6, 2011 8:28 PM EDT reply actions

C'mon, this is a big blow to overcome

Maybe Jones can be a good MLB for us eventually, but their wil be growing pains even if he is talented. I think losing Goff hurts us a lot for this year. So does losing TT. And losing Sintim hurts the LB depth. Losing Austin doesn’t affect us as much this year. As long as he comes back 100% next year, cause he’s going to be a great player for us in the long run.
Maybe we overcome all these injuries if our great players play great all year. But it’s very likely that in the NFL’s war of annual attrition we will eventually get too thin at some positions and get burned.
This really sucks, no way to sugar coat it.

Moratorium....No more Showers for the the Giants Defense

There will be no more showers allowed and no more shaving by any members of the defense, especially LB’s. It has come to my attention that the soap may be slippery and razors sharp, therefore resulting in undue risk of Torn ACLs or lacerations of the face. All LB’s must request permission one week in advance for any priveleges…..
but all kidding aside….>>WTF!!!….this is ridiculous….guys getting hurt in practice!! Are they playing the Superbowl on practice days??? I am hoping i can see all this enthusiasm and hard hitting on SUNDAY guys……..not MONDAY practice!

you all realize we just lost the Defensive QB.........

Not only you lost the body, you also lose the playcalling….i don’t know who our # 1 back up is…..but i am going to ventrue a guess…that even if they sign Kawiaka, it will take some time for him to learn Fewell system….or has he played in Buffalo for him?
I can really see Herzelich getting lots of action …at least early on..

I'd take Lofa Tatupu or Dillard back

before Chase anyways. No disrespect, but he was a ST ace and a marginal LB. You don’t want him as your MLB for a whole season, especially not banged up and older.

by TNYFBG on Sep 6, 2011 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

he ain’t ready to go.

by TNYFBG on Sep 6, 2011 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Boley

will make the calls, play the “QB” role, wear the helmet, etc. at least for the first few weeks. He did it when Goff just got started too.

would you be talking about that playbook...that is....

1000 pages but only contains the same 4 plays every year that we can’t master yet??/ you know…screen, handoff, short throw, long throw……oh yes..they added a fifth….halfback sneak on the punt team

What's going on?

What’s with the Giants injuries the last few years?
Are these guys hitting too hard during practice?
Should be looking into. No other teams are having injuries like we do.

O M G

Super duper late to this … but WTF?
I just thought this is another day of non-football stuff, I thought they don’t practice till Wednesday? Anyways, bad news…b/c we don’t have a solid replacement – meaning someone that has played some real games with this defense at MLB…
but I like the Kawika Mitchell pickup…he never should have went to the Bills the first go around… but that’s come full circle.

I like Greg JONES …and I think he’ll have some rookie mistakes on Sunday, but overall he has been picking up the scheme (even though it’s been mostly vanilla against preseason opponents… here’s to hoping he gets a MONSTER game…

but that sucks for Goff… another ACL issue with this team…augh… get well soon.

"Da Real" Scott
Greg JONES
Herzlich
Paysinger
Jacquin Williams
