I know that Mike's notebook earlier today dealt a lot with New York Giants rookie linebacker Mark Herzlich. I can't help, though, but point you to some tremendous Herzlich stuff from in today's 'Morning Morning Quarterback from Peter King of Sports Illustrated.
You know what my favorite part of King's section on Herzlich is? The part where Herzlich talks about how he has really gotten to know Giants coach Tom Coughlin away from the field.
"I've had lunch with coach Coughlin a couple of times. He'll coach you hard, but then he'll sit with you and talk about life. We talk about grandkids, how things are with him, but nothing too football-related.," Herzlich said.
Coughlin's Jay Fund, of course, raises money for families of children suffering from cancer. The side of Coughlin that Herzlich saw in those lunches, and because of his own battle with cancer, is a side I don't believe Coughlin shows enough people.
You see it more and more as you realize how loyal the Giants coach is to his players and how much it pains him when players suffer devastating injuries or he has to cut players whose work and professionalism he appreciates. That, I think, is a good thing. Hopefully, Giants' players see how much he cares about them as well.
As for Herzlich, he told reporters today that "I want to try to go from being a feel-good story to making an impact on the field."
That is what the Giants and their fans want, too. Herzlich has made the NFL. Now, the story needs to be about what kind of player he can be.
