NFL Roster Cuts: Giants Put Sage Rosenfels On IR, Reach 53-Man Limit

One of the more interesting late moves made by the New York Giants as they pared their roster down to the regular-season limit of 53 players was the placement of backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels on injured reserve due to illness and the subsequent back injury he suffered.

Here are the rest of the transactions:

Safety Brian Jackson (hip) was waived/injured.

The team terminated the contracts of six veterans: wide receiver Michael Clayton, tight end Daniel Coats, guard Ikechuku Ndukwe, center Chris White, defensive tackle Gabe Watson and kicker Rhys Lloyd.

Nineteen players were waived: Phillip Dillard, Adrian Tracy, Dodge, quarterback Ryan Perrilloux, running backs Andre Brown and Charles Scott, tight end Christian Hopkins, wide receiver Darius Reynaud, tackles Jamon Meredith and Jarriel King, center Jim Cordle, defensive ends Ayanaga Okpokowuruk, Craig Marshall, Alex Hall and Justin Trattou and Dwayne Hendricks and defensive backs Joe Burnett, David Sims and Jerrard Tarrant.

Yeah unless you guys lost another CB... Then it's pretty much pick your poison.

BTW I’m in no way wishing any injury upon any player, I’m just stating the fact that your CB depth isn’t exactly at it’s best right now and that 1 more injury could really cause issues.

It’s essentially the situation the Eagles were in last season.

Really

I didn’t think Brown would havebeen cut! Not too sure about Ware this year. Brown looked better, made more decisive moves and cuts. Looked to be a step quicker than Ware as well. I knew Dodge was a goner. Placement of the ball is much more important, see Feagles.

not at all surprised...

I said it before in the NE game thread. He bounced around the league last year after he was waived/injured from our G-men squad. He’ll be there if we want him.

By all means, take Hanson. Just hope that they don’t play him as a CB1 or CB2, since all he can do is play the Nickel. Not to mention that Reese will just LOVE trying to sign a high money contract with him.

Lee should be a whole lot better than what you currently have, though. That’s a no-brainer pick up for you guys, and he should be a nice plug.

That’s exactly what he would be as TT was going to be our nickel CB out there. However, the Giants won’t pay him a high money contract so this is really a non-starter.

Where’d you get that report? I’d have been more than pleased with a 7th. Hanson is a rock-solid nickel CB, probably the best in the game. But he got cut for a reason, he’s limited in that role, he carried a big contract, and he’s always a liability over the top. I think he’d be a good pick up for you, but not a “haha” type of steal.

I searched "Hanson 3rd" on BBV and BGN

And I think he’s basing it off of this little convo:

Asante
is not going anywhere. I think Hanson is pretty decent, but one of those 3 CB’s can handle his job just as well, if not better. Dish Hanson for a 3rd rounder and be done with it.

by trainwreq
A 3rd rounder for Hanson? Honestly, I hope for a 6th and would take a 7th rounder if it was offered. Teams know that it is likely we won’t keep 6 corners on the 53 man, and they also know we are not putting Lindley or Marsh on the practice squad. So unless either of our young corners gets IR’d for a hangnail, I think Hanson will be the odd man out. Our only hope of getting anything at all is the fact that Hanson would likely not clear waivers.

I will admit that it is not outside the realm of possibility that Lindley is the one let go, but I think that is highly unlikely.

by captain nodar

i know
wishful thinking…

by trainwreq

That’s all I could find. So yeah, somebody said it, but he was quickly countered by a rational individual and admitted he was being too optimistic. I saw lots of 5th-7th talk, as well as a lot of (unfair) “let’s just cut the bum”.

NBC couldn’t get 1/3 of the starters correct the Jets game, so what’s to be trusted.

All I know is Kehl was starting for them almost as soon as he got there. Or at least playing most of the snaps.

28 tackles, 7 assists for the season. He wasn’t starter and probably didn’t get most of the snaps. If he did, he sucked. Just learn to admit when you are wrong. He was a back up!

I say if the Eagles lost a couple of their starters, they’re a shadow of who they (and apparently the public) THINK they are. They’ve got to hope for a whole lot of luck in the injury front.

At LB and OL yes, if we lost a few guys we’d have issues. Outside of that Safety would be a spot I’d worry about if a starter went down.

No. As a whole I disagree.

I’m not saying we have no depth in those positions, I’m just saying that’s where our depth is questionable.

OL we have Dunlap as our b/u OT, Vandervelde as the b/u OG, Jamaal Jackson as our backup G/C.

LB we have Rolle, Jordan and a few others..

Safety we have Jarrett, Page and Anderson.

Our depth is more unproven than it is weak… I’d be really worried if a LB went down for us. As far as the OL I’d be upset but it’d end up being fine and for Safety I have faith in Page as our main backup.

Well

Dunlap is a liability at RT. If he weren’t, the Eagles wouldn’t have signed Harris and then moved Herremans there. Jackson hasn’t played a full regular season game in 1.5 years. He’s still an unknown.

Your LBs are bad. There’s no other way to characterize the unit until they show more in the regular season.

Jarrett is a rookie. Page was a special teams player last year. I don’t know Anderson. Allen still isn’t recovered from last year’s injury.

Dunlap’s a little bit of a liability but he’s not bad. Justice is on the mend, he’ll probably be back at practice soon.. Jackson is a backup and played well this pre-season.

Your LBs are bad. There’s no other way to characterize the unit until they show more in the regular season.

They’re not bad, outside of Casey right now we actually have guys who can do what we need. Casey’s the weak link, that’s about it. You can’t characterize them as good or bad.

Jarrett is a rookie. Page was a special teams player last year. I don’t know Anderson. Allen still isn’t recovered from last year’s injury.

Allen will be fine and Page has been a starter for a while, last year he wasn’t but he’s looking good too. Jarrett’s shown flashes and will probably get playing time as the year goes on. Anderson’s essentially a very good special teams guy.

No chance that he had other priorities that he thought were more important. No a GM that has never had a losing season, who other teams fans drool over, let’s mock him before the season starts.

He’s hit his critics with a pie in the face almost every year (2009 his handling of the safety position being a counter example), so pardon me if I trust that our LBz will get rounded into shape by the beginning of next season.

Since then an older group, that got picked apart post Superblow, has not been the top priority

Our DBs were a mess after 07, less you wanted to hold onto CBs on SOcial Security
After 08 was WRs
after 09 Safeties
Etc

I’d love them to be able to fix everything at once, sometimes you fix the important stuff first (like DT, wait till Austin is healthy) and the lower priorities however you can.

And please, don’t start telling me what the priorities should be, unless your an insider we just don’t know.

LBs are not the focus of the 4-3 D in the modern league

It was designed around Sam Huff, but with the passing game’s prevalence, it’s become a caretaker position. The front 4 and DB’s are higher priority.

That being said, it’s exciting to see so much promise in our rooks that we have nothing but as our backups. Herz, Jones and Paysinger will be studs and starting players in the near future. Boley should be sure to play lights out if he wants to keep his roster spot past this year. Kiwi and Goff are homegrown, so they have less to worry about as far as losing their jobs, but they will be challenged. Jones has got to be licking his chops for Goff’s spot. Kiwi has to stay on the field if he is ever going to develop into what we know he can be.

All indications are pointing to Smith playing early in the season

and as for Hixon…his 5 games after Burress got hurt as the #1 guy

5 catches for 71 yards
3 catches for 30 yards
6 catches for 60 yards
4 catches for 71 yards
4 catches for 62 yards

2 catches for 37 yards in the playoff game

And in 2009, his lone big play at receiver was the 61 yard touchdown against the Eagles

How does playing as the #4 WR mean that Reese messed up?

Even if he plays, he’s not going to be 100%. Unless Smith is playing ahead of Avant and playing at a high level, then Reese didn’t mess up.

As for Hixon, he’ll be the #3 WR on the team. His numbers are fine for that role. Manningham will be Smith’s replacement because he’s taking the 2nd most targets after Nicks.

Manningham averaged 59 yards per game last year and the only reason it was that high was because he started in place of Smith. If he had been the #3 WR all season long, it would’ve been lower. In other words, a #3 WR who averages 30-50 yards is fine.

I critiqued JR in my post, so pack that weak sauce up

He’s a top GM, he isn’t Jesus or Satan capable of bending time and space. He can only get done with so much every year.

It’s undeniable that since 2007, our LBs are now younger, faster and showing more upside. Does that mean he’s found us a superstar? No, but let’s at least wait till game 6 to say these guys suck. Paysinger, Jones and Goff looked very good this preseason. Kiwi is a player, and Boley with JPP in front of him, is running free making plays. I’m not starry eyed, but it hardly looks like a disaster.

Syler, your opinion is diminished by the results.

If you want a championship every year you are almost always going to be disappointed. Just like 31 teams every year.

It would be nice if we could have a sort of Dynasty type run like the Pats of 10 years ago, or the Cowboys 10 years before that, but, it’s just so rare.

Be happy we have an organization, a GM, a head coach, and a QB that give us a chance to be a contender every year. And you can’t say that we don’t. Over the past 7 years a disaster season for us is 8-8.

and to me LB’s have gotta be game smart before they have a chance to be good.

This is a very anti Reese like group of LB’s (He usually chooses the athletic guys and lets the coaches mold them, ie. JPP, Manningham, Ross etc)

But I think it’s the right choice here.

I think JR decided during 2009 that the team needed to get faster

Last 2 drafts has been about increasing the positional speed everywhere except OL

RB, WR, DT,DE LB, CB, S all got faster quicker players. JR makes mistakes, but he’s usually a year or two ahead. It’s why I trust him.

Roselfels to IR with ... wait for it ... strep throat?

Welcome to the new softer NFL.

Did the Giants owe Sage the 2011 salary guaranteed or something? Can’t imagine they’d want to pay him $3MM to sit at home with his Chloraseptic spray.

I've been hospitalized by strep throat...

It gets so bad that my throat will swell completely shut and I can’t breathe. I got it the worst when I was in the Navy and no antibiotics would put a dent in the infection. I had to get steroid shots to reverse my throat swelling because nothing else worked. I took IV after IV because I couldn’t swallow and was so dehydrated they checked me into the hospital. Now whenever I get a sore throat with a fever I go straight to the emergency room because it was honestly the most horrible thing I’ve ever had to deal with medically.

Hawaii must have been an awesome place to be stationed. (is there anywhere better?). You sub squids are a ‘special’ bunch, having to be able to stay down in that tube for weeks or months at a time. How was WA?

I was stationed at VA beach when I was a jet mechanic for A-6 bombers.

Interesting it was...but frustrating as well

I’d have to say that my time in SC was the best for me…it’s where I met my wife. Hawaii was great at first but it’s like the saying goes – “A great place to visit but I wouldn’t want to live there”. The first month was amazing but as time goes on I started to get a bit of Island Fever. I was looking forward to getting back to the mainland and my family. If I was single then Oahu would have been paradise…and I’m not just talking about the weather. Still, being based at Pearl Harbor was definitely something I think anyone in the Navy (or any service member) should experience. The history really makes you appreciate the those who have sacrificed in the past to ensure the freedom we enjoy today.

WA was great. My wife moved up so that had a lot to do with it but that area is beautiful as well. Plus, I was part of the crew who stayed on until the boat was completely torn apart. So, I had another 2 years in the Navy without having to go out to sea which you know is really unheard of. That duty was extremely satisfying…the coolest thing I have ever done was disassemble a nuclear reactor plant. Not many people get to stand on a balcony over a open nuclear reactor vessel and look down at the inner workings while removing the spent fuel.

The jet mechanic gig is a great one…both while you’re enlisted and in life after the military. It’s some serious business being a jet mechanic…very intense work that requires the best people doing it. Can’t be a slouch when you’re on the job. Funny…My father was an aviation mechanic when he was in the Air Force. I would have loved to do that, too.

Well thank you for the insight to your Navy career!

Like many servicemen, especially those who were in the Navy like us, you got to see some great places and do some very interesting things. I can read the sincerity in your ‘voice’ when you describe taking apart that sub. Awesome.

I can relate to the disassembling the nuclear power plant. I once had a month of duty as the night baker’s assistant on the USS Eisenhower. lol… It was just me and him from 11pm to 5 am… baking, making hootch, rocking to the likes of Alice in Chains. ;-)

The problem with me I have never tested positive for Strep, they have to send out cultures to see if I have it. And I had a few signs of Mono but the doctor said if I don’t test positive for Strep I’m not going to show all the symptoms of Mono.

I hate needles and they had to do 4 mono tests on me.

Which I think still is a lot and has got to be an advantage in getting future UDFA’s to come to the Giants as it shows they’re open to adding them to the roster if they stand out. Duke was another UDFA who made the roster last season. I’m just thinking that if I wasn’t drafted and was looking for a team to try and go to for preseason, I’d look at positional need, and their record on whether they actually ever accept UDFA’s onto the roster.

The Bears declined the Redskin’s Round 1 pick (it was like #8 overall) AND their high Round 2 pick. for Briggs. And that was just two years ago. Any team is going to need more than just a Round 2 pick for Briggs (mostly because the Bears value Briggs a bit too much).

That makes sense, no? We see alot of winning around here and were lucky enough to have seen the Giants win it all 4 years ago. That inspires confidence in most of us. I can only imagine how much more negativity there must be on the teams like the Bills, or the 49ers sites, for example.

by GMen56-11 on Sep 3, 2011 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Well He's played 1st rounders early and other guys later

But he’s often had pretty good vets on the roster to play ahead of them. He has to have noticed the lack of team speed, and it can’t be a coincidence that almost every pick for 2 years was directed towards that.

It’s the plight of good teams, you don’t get top 10 picks, you rarely get the outrageous athletic studs (Eric Berry?) and you have to get younger and more athletic all the time. That means breaking in the young guys all the time.

"That's mostly fans who say that kind of stuff and they really don't understand the process. We have good players on the team. We're not looking to go out and make every sexy splash that can be made. We make solid football decisions. That's been happening for a long time," Reese said

I definitely like how we’ve increased our team speed as well as got younger…. much younger.

IMO TC lack of trust in the young guys is a detriment and hampers their progress. 2007 definitely proved that.

by GMen56-11 on Sep 3, 2011 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

It seems like there are 2 schools of thought

Some coaches prefer more polished, less mistake prone play. They are willing to forego the potential returns from the young guys.

Other coaches are willing to endure the growing pains of youth

TC likes his guys more polished, but he will play someone if he trusts them

I wish TC was a bit less predisposed towards vets, but when I saw Dallas throw Romo under the bus to play some rookies I thought that was stupid too.

Yeah, I remember the great decision

to let Pettigout go, which i saw a smart because he always had a bad back, and for no particular reason I like Deihl. And Amani was still a solid contributor, but, isn’t one of the major stories of that year the draft class of 2007?

This is nothing new, TC does not trust rookies. Sometimes it’s smart, but the bigger and more troubling picture is his rigidness when it comes to his philosophies. It holds our team back sometimes, IMO.

I still think keeping dropping Dodge for Weatherford is a mistake, if only for thinking beyond this season. I can only assume Weatherford will be gone again after this year like he has done with all of his other teams and then we will be back starting from scratch looking for another new punter next year. Oh well, lets hope we get the most out of him while he’s here.

Surprises...

Surprised the Giants released Andre Brown and Adrian Tracy. I have never been a big DJ Ware fan. He catches the ball out of the backfield well and is a good backfield blocker for Eli. But, I definitely thought Andre Brown would have been an upgrade. With Sintim out for the season I thought Tracy would back up Kiwi at SAM. Who among the youngsters can play SAM behind Kiwi. I would not be surprised to see the Giants scouring the waiver wire for a available veteran OLB as well as a TE. I do not feel comfortable with Ballard, Pascoe and Beckam.

I’m a Ducks fan, and I didn’t want to jinx his chances to make the squad.

All 4 of them have shown a lot of potential. and with a year or so on the team we could be looking at a couple of them as top notch starters.

I like Goff in the middle but how long he holds that position with Jones behind him will have to be seen, Paysinger impressed me in college and I’m psyched to see him in Blue, he’s a right place all the time type of guy, as is Herzlich. And the wildcard is definitely Williams, the athlete who is learning on the fly.

My two cents

I am not sure you can call a 3rd round pick who has yet to play a down of regular season football a bust. Yes, he was inconsistent both as a returner and at WR during the pre-season. Lets give the kid a chance before we label him one way or the other. For instance, the love fest going on for the Giants rookie LB’s is a little ridiculous. Herzlich is a great, uplifting story. But, seriously, these are rookies, two of them UDFA’s. Lets tone it down with the hero worship. I would like to reconvene after the season and we can grade the rookies then.

by ejcal70 on Sep 3, 2011 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree... Absurd

The guy has great speed, flashed one GREAT punt return and one GREAT catch on 2 pt conversion. Jerry Rice had problems holding onto the football when he first came into the league. Not comparing the ability of these two, just saying give the kid some time to get rid of the jitters. He could be an AWESOME player for the Giants in a year or two.

by NYStateofMind on Sep 5, 2011 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Plus...

They will keep coaching him and showing him film on how to keep his elbows in when catching a punt. I’m sure they’ll keep drilling it into him in practice. Hopefully he gets it and can give the Giants some electric punt returns and get on the field in some 3 or 4 WR sets working against some second rate DB.

Tyrone Wheatley, Ron Dayne, William Joseph, Thomas Lewis, Derrick Brown, and Jarrod Bunch. Pretty much every first round pick during the 90’s was a flop. Rodney Hampton was the only one worthy of his 1st round pick. Ike Hilliard, Shaun Williams and Luke Petitgout were serviceable starters but could hardly be considered stars.

Depends on how you define decent

Wheatley was ok once he left the Giants. Dayne was good that one year. And Bunch was good before he got hurt, he just did not play long before that.

And I think all of those awful picks in the 90s just made me appreciate Rodney Hampton even more. He still immediately comes to mind when I think of my favorite Giants players ever. I’d say right up there with Toomer, but I think I liked Hampton even more.

More prepared to do what? Catch a football?

I’ve never played in the NFL (by personal choice – obviously) but I don’t see how OTAs or mini-camps would “prepare” him to catch the ball. Hey, maybe he should have just let the ball drop or call fair catches. I do think nerves have something to do with his issue but he has had problems in practice with catching punts.

I’m not buying him a blimp ticket…I’m just saying…the missed rookie workouts can’t be the main cause of his drops.

He dropped more punts in this preseason than Dodge did catching the snap all year last year.

more prepared to NFL life

is a big reason for his yips. No way am I excusing his drops. This is all brand new to him. Coming from a small college program like Troy then going to the NY Giants is like visting a new planet. Rookies in the past have had the benefit of months to get acclimated, JJ has had 4 weeks.

Instead of OTAs working on technique

And camp 2 a days, they had a ton of meetings. Obviously there were issues, he just didn’t have the same amount of time and opportunity to work them out. Then when we watched him in games he might have looked better.

Okay, If I look at it like that then I can see that coaching could address issues like that. It kind of like the QB coach…I always wondered why a starting NFL QB needed someone to “coach” them specifically…mechanics are best observed and addressed by a second party.

What was JJ doing in pop warner, hs and college?

No one taught him how to catch a punt? If not, how did he get to the nfl based on that skill?

In college, another student in my class did not know that the combatants in Ww1 were the us, uk, france, etc. V. Germany. Keep in mind that when i went to college, ww1 was not so long ago. The professor was not mad at the student, just perplexed that one could get to an upper level political science class and not know that.

I feel the same with Jernigan. He reached the highest pinnacle of his career without the basic ability to do his job? Catching a punt is not brain surgery. He is an athlete .

by scarlet knight on Sep 4, 2011 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm sure...

That he can catch a punt. I think somebody pointed out in another post that he did it in college. Admittedly, his form is bad (he needs to keep his elbows tucked in as TC and Ross were trying to tell him before and during the NE game). But I don’t think any of us can imagine the nerves and pressure associated with trying to play in the NFL as a rookie. I’m sure he will settle down in time and will be able to do his job. I’m guessing that even in practice he does way better. But he probably has coaches standing next to him reminding him what to do, and he isn’t doing it in front of 80,000 screaming fans and millions of tv viewers. Some players excel in the spotlight, some get nervous and fail. If he never gets over his issues he will become a bust. But I think if he starts making some good plays, his confidence will build and he will be ok. (at least I hope so)

Coughlin had to address poor special teams play after EVER game last season. You’d think it would have been such a traumatic experience that handling STs would have been a reflex after the lockout ended.

Now after 4 preseason games of shaky ST play we still see nothing. I’m praying that something is going on behind the scenes that will unfold each week. If STs plays poorly again this season I’m not sure how this fan base will react.

Ryan Perrilloux, in his limited time, looked to me like he could be a real NFL QB. Such poise so young, and good decision making. And we seem to have good backups for the offensive line. It seems (could be preseason delusion) that we have gone a long way towards addressing two of our three biggest weaknesses (OL and LB) without really taking any dramatic action.
This should be a fun season. I think we have a chance to set a new NFL record for sacks. And I can’t think of a single Giants player that has an annoying personality.
Win or lose, and hopefully mostly win, this should be a year when the team gives us some fun play. I can’t imaging that we will have the lack of enthusiasm from two years ago.
I am burning some incense to the football gods to keep our ACL’s intact.
Let the games begin.

I think

What will hurt the Giants the most this season is a lack of another weapon on offense to keep defenses honest against both stacking the line to stop the run and doubling Nicks. Next year 1st round pick should be another stud WR. Then keep adding depth to OL. Overall team looks great. Like you said, I think the depth of this team is awesom both O and D. 2nd team played very well against NE starters.

I don't get the Rosencopter IR

No one would have picked him up. He is not an exceptional back-up. He may be the 4th best QB on the roster. He would be available next year. Why was he not cut?

I agree...To some extent. i think he's a good backup

They wasted a year for him. i think he could have backed up somewhere else. if your quarterback goes down, he could take over. i thought he wasn’t that sick (strep throat). I assume the Giants have to pay him.

Normally I'm quite optimistic but...

….I’m concerned about the lack of depth. We’ve got the talent at skill positions, the OL looks great as usual and the DL scares the crap out of most opponents. Each of the young players looks good, but when you see them all listed together……

Just in general…..ever since Plax shot himself I’ve had the sense that this is a talented team that will do well but doubts itself in critical moments. We need to pull a game or two out of our butts this year, win one that we have no business of winning because somebody makes a huge play. Get a sense that the breaks are gonna go our way.

Ah….screw this BS, let’s play some footbal! and see what happens.

I agree with you, this team needs to KNOW

that when things get tough in a game, when you are down and things look bad, that the leaders on the field can rally the troops and overcome any obstacle.

I thought the comeback win against JAX last year might propel us to bigger and better things, but we need to beat the Eagles to gain the confidence we need. (Season is getting close, I’m starting to use the word ‘we’, more.)

I will be at the season opener NYG @ WAS with a few friends. If you are going and feel like looking up a fellow BBVer and having some fun, let me know.

People forget that the 07 team was sort of older

08 was it’s last hurrah, we’ve been retooling since 09. This season the roster looks much better than 09 and 10. Younger faster hungrier and plenty of talent.

"That's mostly fans who say that kind of stuff and they really don't understand the process. We have good players on the team. We're not looking to go out and make every sexy splash that can be made. We make solid football decisions. That's been happening for a long time," Reese said

Lack of Depth???

Are you serious? That’s probably the teams biggest strength. Did you not see the 2s playing very well against the Patriots’ 1s?? If not for Hixon’s fumble and letting the Pats have a 1yard TD drive and one horrendous pass by our backup QB, our second unit mostly played their starters to a draw. That seems like AWESOME depth to me or some really amazing coaching.

But I think you’re onto something with Plax. But I don’t think it’s lack of confidence. It’s just lack of an amazing playmaker. Nicks is getting there, but we need one more great weapon in the passing game. When Plax was there it kept defenses honest and the running game was amazing because of it. And Eli didn’t have to throw it for 4000 yards. The Giants are a better team when Eli only throws 3000 some yards and we are just churning out yards on the ground. But in order for that to happen we need another explosive threat in the passing game.

Just haven't seen enough from him

to warrant keeping Ware. Just not impressed with that decision.

Quit playing not to lose. Start playing to WIN! Geeez...

Ware makes me angry...

Well, not exactly. Still, the guy is garbage and I saw enough of Andre Brown to give him a shot on the roster instead of keeping one who has always failed to impress.

I don’t like keeping picks for sentimental value, but I guess every GM probably has one or two (see: Sinorice Moss)…

I don't buy the argument

that JR keeps guys just because it’s his pick. He cut Tracy, Dillard and Dodge this year. Moss was our 5th or 6th WR. I’m sure if he was on the team it’s because there wasn’t a better 5th or 6th WR on the team. I don’t know of any great #5 or 6 WRs in the league, do you? Besides, all the guys on the team are his “picks”, whether they come from the draft, FA or trades. JR signed them all. They are all ‘his" guys. I’m sure he and the coaching staff keep who they think are the best. They see way more of these guys than we do. I’m sure they have good reasons for all their roster moves.
