New York Giants' Injury News: Osi Umenyiora Practices, But ...

Of course there can't be good injury news with the New York Giants without some bad news to go along with it.

Defensive end Osi Umenyiora practiced today  for the first time since undergoing arthorscopic knee surgery during the preseason.

The 9-year veteran shared the team lead in sacks last season with 11½ and tied an NFL record with 10 forced fumbles.

Staying with the good news, wide receiver Mario Manningham was also cleared to practice. Manningham missed Sunday's game with a concussion.

Now for the bad news. Wide receiver Brandon Stokley suffered a quad injury during practice. The severity of the injury to the veteran wide receiver, signed to be the slot receiver for quarterback Eli Manning, is not yet known. That would make a return Sunday by Manningham more important.

Justin Tuck, who has both neck and groin injuries, also reportedly did not practice today. Tuck is expected to play on Sunday.

If the worst in injury news out of everything

is that stokely had a quad problem, then it was a pretty healthy day, no?

Who has a burner for 5 weeks?

Obviously you have never had one, or not a severe one. I had a bad fall from a jump on a snowboard in January this year(2011) and got a REALLY bad stinger. My fingers were still partially numb more than a month later. I got an MRI and discovered I had two minor bulging disks in my neck. This can be both a very serious nerve and spinal injury. As Giants fans, we are lucky that Tuck is still even playing football. This is more or less the same problem that Peyton Manning is dealing with right now. We all see how well that injury ended up for him (fused spine and missing probably the whole year). This is a VERY common problem in the NFL and really at any level of football not to mention a lot of other sports. For you to be questioning this injury is RIDICULOUS. But maybe you just don’t understand the nature of it. There is a massive bundle of nerves (the brachial plexus) that branches out of our spine down through our shoulders and arms. These nerves come through the gaps of many vertebrate. If you pinch your neck/vertebrate even slightly, you can cause all sorts of bad nerve issues.

by NYStateofMind on Sep 28, 2011 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont think anybody is questioning the injury

I think we’re speculating that its more serious than they have been letting on.

any inflamed nerve

can remain an irritating injury for months, and once you’ve had it, it’s more likely to flare up again. Just because it’s lingering does not mean it’s more severe than previously thought. However, the only way to get it better is to rest and not continue to tweak it.

You mean...

The Moronic Tom Coughlin Development Plan (subsequently referred to as TMTCD)?? Da’rel Scott is also on this ridiculous plan. They are both explosive players. They will make their mistakes as young inexperienced players, but they are probably the two most explosive players we have on the roster, and they both flashed a bit of what they could do in the pre-season if given the opportunity. LET THEM PLAY TC!!

Mario was on the same plan

remember the first few plays he had in his career? Ugly is the only way to describe them. A year or 2 watching and taking notes does wonders for guys who arent quite there yet.

I don't remember

MMs early career action too well. I don’t remember if he flashed the type of potential that JJ and DS flashed in their rookie preseasons this year. I still want to see them on the field to see what they can do to help us. If they make too many mistakes, then sit them. But TC punishes players just for being rookies, not making mistakes (with full knowledge that I don’t see practice… but I damn well saw preseason, and they looked like they could be really good – as long as you don’t put JJ in there to return punts).

slight problem with that:

Pretty much every Giants vet was seen carrying a #72 towel in the preseason. The locker room supported Osi. His problem was with JR. Not the coaches or any other player.

they need to figure out a way to keep JPP on the feild as much as possible, and keep Osi happy with his playing time. its not going to be easy especially when we start to see an obvious downgrade in run support if Osi takes over for JPP. def going to be interesting to see how this is handled. its a pretty good problem to have

I'm not so sure about

You’re trying to stop Maclin and Jackson. You’re trying to keep Vick in the pocket. Then you’re trying to keep McCoy from bouncing outside.

McCoy has an uncanny ability to make something out of nothing. Even when you’re in the right position, he can break free. Very few RBs in the league can do that. I’m not willing to say that the Giants run defense is subpar because it had trouble with him.

How do you say a surgery wasn't needed?

Obviously it was, or he wouldn’t have gotten it. He had scar tissue and swelling in his knee. The knee was not 100%, now it’s fixed, and he can come back and play at 100%. Makes no sense.

Even before the season started

I wanted JPP to start and Osi to come in on passing downs only.

August 2011:

I feel that JPP will be as dynamic a pass rusher as Osi while being better against the run. I know that he’s not there yet and that’s a big statement but that’s what the Giants believe as well. He’ll get there with more experience.

Totally agree

Great to have a surplus of talent anywhere anytime, but especially this year. Like you say, an occasional breather can help prevent injury and make the opposing (tired) OL look bad. Three top shelf DE’s is a luxury.

JPP as a LE and as a RE

Well there was a preseason game where JPP played RE and I got to say he’s better as a LE then he’s a RE. So if Tuck can’t play and osi can is there any chance of osi playing on tucks position?

He would have more

but right now, he’s getting held a ton without getting the holding calls. I think we now have the next sacking machine and the league is keepin a lid on him. It’s a laugh to see him brush aside O tackles and head straight at the QB. I like Osi a lot but his claim to fame is the “out race the tackle to a strip sack”. He’s good at it but imo, JPP is like the kraken, the Giants are letting him nibble a little, get a sense of what he can do and when it comes to Brady and Rogers time, Coughlin will turn to Fewell and say………………..well, you know what he’ll say.

it's a tough call

w/ the ressurgence of Rocky Bernard and the good play by Linval and Canty….

I wouldn’t mind seeing Canty bounce outside.

but knowing Fewell, he’ll want guys who can get after the QB…especially if Kolb gonna be throwing a lot.

that said…Osi seems to be getting healthy at the right time considering Tuck’s neck is suspect….but Osi just got back.

I think you gotta go w/ Tolly as much as possible, but on running down. let Canty play the end w/ Rocky and Linval inside.

Kiwi is labeled the "SAM"

But take a close look at where that actually is, he is typically on the open or weak side because Fewell prefers the “Wil” type or Boley in this case to cover the TE side which is technically the SAM or strong side.

As for Boley playing SAM on passing downs, i assume you are refereing to the nickle?, in that case there is no SAM only a WIL and a MIKE in which case, Jaquian and Boley alternate back and forth depending on formation and if one of them is rushing or not from what ive seen so far.

Kiwi can, and probably will

he did it vs. the Eagles to spell JPP here and there.

was largely ineffective.

Personally, I think Kiwi is right where he belongs….and b/c of that, i don’t want to move him back to DE…

handful of snaps per game, fine….more than that….i don’t see the need.

I agree

but he should be used as a DE in pass rushing situations. Guys on this site like Tolly casue he’s a grinder but I’d feel a hell of a lot better with Kiwi rushing the QB.

sit tuck until after the bye if needed

dont need a serious neck issue taking away our best player. neck injuries ruin careers, not just weeks. If Osi is good to, maybe even if he isnt, Tuck needs to get sat for a few weeks until hes 100%. cant take that big of a risk on our best player

by Plaxico Burress on Sep 28, 2011 3:54 PM EDT reply actions

I agree

Stokley gets released, Justin Trateau gets brought up for depth. and we make it to the bye with Tuck healing.

I don't know

I just had a lot of confidence for the couple of snaps Stokley was out there, he’s the kind of veteran presence that I felt was a good move for this team especially with his slot experience. This may be a bigger long term lose than we might think.

It's fair to be concerned.

But the man was here for all of two weeks, I really don’t think his loss is going to be too detrimental to the team at all.

Eli has gotten it done with Michael Clayton and Derrek Hagan before.

Nicks, Ham, and Cruz will be just fine IMO.

Stokley is nice to have around

as a veteran mentor to the younger guys (all of our receivers lol) but as far as on the feild impact, this injury isnt going to hurt the gents too much. gives Devin Thomas who impressed in preseason a shot to get some playing time…. maybe even JJ12 gets some snaps

by Plaxico Burress on Sep 28, 2011 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not like he did real well

when he was in there. The one pass we really needed him to catch (the long 3rd down), he rounded off his route way too much (sloppy) and drifted too far into the zone, allowing the safety just enough time to come up and make a play on the ball. That should have been a catch if he ran a cleaner route.

Lockout

He probably bulked up & trained as if he would be playing DE. He was a UFA searching for a decent check & he’d get paid most as a DE. Even if he was 100% sure he’d sign with us, the coaches wouldnt have been able to tell him to prepare this offseason to be a LB

I’m assuming that your daughter didn’t choose to use her looks to sell merchandise and gain employment. I have a much younger daughter and I teach her that there are things she shouldn’t stand for if they make her uncomfortable. She should respect herself and defend her right to be whoever she wants to be. Couple examples…I whistled at her once to get her attention and she walked over. I looked her square in the face and told her to never let any man whistle her…never let anyone tell her to “shut-up”…never let any man tell her to do anything just because they said to.

Now, that being said…when she decides what she wants to do with her life I believe she will have learned to respect herself enough to be able to make a clear-headed decision. If she wants to be a model…fine…because she’ll know that she’ll be in control.

Plus, Alyssa Milano started this clothing line for women. So, I don’t have any problem with it. She’s extremely attractive and I’m sure that she loves that just as much as we do.

P.S – I had a crush on her when she was on Whose The Boss…we’re about the same age.

If we didn’t have bad luck we have no luck at all. Which may help?

Stokley can't even get open to catch a pass

He shouldn’t be the slot receiver when you have a speedy receiver like JJ who can take it to the house anytime he touches the ball.

Give JJ the ball and stop ‘babying’ the players.

Team Blue chips: Greg Jones, Da Rel Scott, JJ, JPP, J. Wlilliams,

"Hello...you play to win the game."
