Giants vs. Redskins: Who's to Blame?

A lot of people have argued that the Giants are depleted and that’s part of the reason they lost. I agree with that, to an extent. The big names that were on the field did a lot wrong. While I may have a lot of negative things to say in this post, I still believe this is a good team that can get it together and make a run to the playoffs. Even if that is a BIG if. They also have the potential to be last in the NFC East. These guys did not help us out on Sunday:

  • Kevin Gilbride: I've gotten used to the fact that KG is an ‘up and down’ offensive coordinator. Against the Redskins, he abandoned the run too early, and in doing so, he became predictable. He ran too many WR screens to stay on schedule, something the run game is supposed to do for our offense. The conventional wisdom is that pass protection is harder on an offensive line than run blocking. If that is the case, why was he passing so much with a refurbished O-line? Why not run the ball and give then time to gel?
  • Perry Fewell: Are we that afraid of Santana Moss, Anthony Armstrong and company that we give them massive cushions on 4th down? They’re tiny! Get some hands on them. Redirect their routes. Chip Fred Davis! And when we have a depleted secondary, it stands to reason that we should rush MORE, not less. We had bottled their running game up, so our defense should have been able to pin its ears back.
  • Tom Coughlin: I like TC. That said, he has never trusted young players. That’s fine when you have Steve Smith, Kevin Boss, Amani Toomer etc. on your team. When you’re playing Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham, Jake Ballard, Henry Hynoski, Victor Cruz, Will Beatty, etc. you can’t be like that! Simply put: Sure Cruz dropped the ball on a key 3rd down. Tough shit. Giving him the cold shoulder for the rest of the game doesn't help the team. He’s clearly talented and maybe he could have helped Eli. A young team is going to make mistakes, but that is something you live with if you’re in the middle of a youth movement.
  • Corey Webster: A couple of good plays don’t negate generally bad coverage. Let me pain you a picture: Corey Webster sucked playing zone before Spagnulo came around. Then he got to play press-man and he excelled. With Fewell, we switched back to zone and he wasn’t that good. I can’t believe that the coaching staff hasn't considered that Corey Webster may not be ideally suited to a read and react defense. He screws our cap over too.
  • Eli Manning: I’d consider myself an Eli apologist, and frankly he did some good things on Sunday. The interception wasn't entirely his fault and he was better with throwing the ball away. That said, he was entirely too jumpy and when you have a young team and offensive line, that attitude is contagious. Beyond that, Eli also needs to trust his receivers more. If Victor Cruz drops the ball, go back to him! I guarantee you Peyton, Brady, Brees, and Rodgers don’t lock guys out that drop passes on them. It just doesn't help the offense, especially when the O-line isn't doing a good job blocking for you.

What do you guys think? This list isn't exhaustive, but there is a pattern. I'm starting to get frustrated with our coaching staff and the attitude they bring to this team. Before anybody jumps on me saying that I want a Rex Ryan circus, I mean a lack of adaptability. We're so rigid and regimented that the moment something goes wrong, we're in trouble. We have a young team but coaches won't change to address that. Travis Beckum gets injured late in the week, but instead of complaining, we should have another option. I've seen this for the last couple of years. Last year our offense struggled because of the injury to Steve Smith. The year before that, our defense sucked because KP was injured. The year before that it was Plax. We won the Superblow because we replaced Shockey, and we replaced Tiki. I have not seen that same resilience since.

With Cruz

I wasnt sure that Eli gave him the cold shoulder. I cant be positive bc I havent gone through the game again, but I would have to believe that he just didnt get open.

I have not yet begun to procrastinate

Cweb basically played vs. the Redskins

like TT played all last season.

I never heard TT catch THIS much flack though.

in fact, some BBVers were nominating him for a Pro Bowl nod b/c he had a lot of tackles.

why does BBV not like Cweb???

hardly

he gave up a TD and a few underneath routes

and had two PDs.

if you wanna see “destroyed” go watch what Maclin did to TT last year….or basically watch any game last year from TT. Aka BBV’s favorite Cornerback.

again, I really would like to know what Cweb ever did to BBV that he catches so much flack….especially when one of the most targetted Corners in all of the NFL last year (TT) is so beloved.

Blame the Coaching Staff

Sorry but lets put it where it belongs. Coughlin\Gilbride\Fewell

Coughlin for allowing his coordinators to literally give the game away. Not firing Tom Quinn or Kildrive. He will go down in flames with them. We should’ve went with SPAGS as the new HC. Oh and here is the doozy, giving the QB’s coach job to Sullivan who is a WR coach. UNREAL. Here was an IDEA, fire kildrive and hire Josh Mcdaniels as the OC.

Gilbride for being the most obvious OC in the whole NFL. no creativity and no surprise playcalling whatsoever. Have you ever wondered if you or me as a fan can see the play coming that MAYBE the opposing defenses may know it as well. Somebody punch this guy in the face again. The raiders need to take him off our hands.

Last but not least FEWELL who continues to use this Cover 2 defense that is not fitting our players strengths. we dont have burners for db’s to close the gaps on the zones. Our safety’s look slow and out of position since they are playing so deep. why not blitz Rex more often. Get home with a few blitzes for crying out loud. this guy predicates his defense on reacting instead of forcing. I still cannot believe I saw the same exact defense and schemes that lost us a chance at the playoffs. time for a spring cleaning.

Tuck's Neck

I blame Tuck’s neck. All the other injuries notwithstanding, 91 alone would’ve made a huge difference in this game.

Have to believe it also screwed up Fewell’s game planning to begin with.

by Pink Flamingo on Sep 13, 2011 11:26 AM EDT reply actions

Of Course

there’s some CYA on Fewell’s part. As there was on Gilbride’s part even before the game…you could hear the hesitation in his comments, the lamenting about the spring camp, rookie camp, etc.

But I’d still think if Tuck is in there, it might’ve been a different outcome. JPP might’ve gotten 3 sacks, they could’ve moved guys around more, had more deception on the blitz, etc.

Still, the reality is, they stunk and didn’t play up to par in almost any phase of the game.

by Pink Flamingo on Sep 13, 2011 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it was the collective teams fault.

Nobody aside from Nicks and JPP truly stood out in a positive manner. There were some that were good, some that were average, but you want more than 2 guys playing the way those 2 did.

Defensive player of the year for 2011 is...

Wild_Eagle!

Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. Wild_Eagle protects the motherland (BGN) from the evils of noobs, douche-bags, and other assholes. Although he may be crude and unnecessary, all great defenders draws the yellow flag from time to time.

Baas stood out.

Boley was outstanding. Ballard had 2 huge catches. Tollefson was very good.

I rec'd you and this thread.UJF

I think you and Nomad hit the nail on the head about the coaching..although having the same coaches for consistency benefits are still very good.
And I also don’t want to blame Eli too much,as he seems to me the main sufferer of this coaching staff’s consistently eratic results.
And much to Eli’s credit,HE NEVER THROWS ANYONE UNDER THE BUS TO THE MEDIA!
NOT EVEN PLAX OR SHOCKEY!
Forgive me for the caps..I never do that.

Tuck,JPP,Osi,Kiwi,Canty,Anvil,Tolly all will be in rare form and be getting opponents down to their 3rd QB's.

Killdrive,Tom Quinn, and the QB coach Eli is developing(WTF!)must all go even if we win it all!

A big problem is...

Our team is full of rookies and NO leaders to lead them.

Factology! Belief is ignorance.

This team IMO has a lot of problems

Some here talk about leadership. I think Tuck is a good leader for D, but he was injured. The O really has no leader. It should be Manning, but I think Tiki was right when he said Eli was a joke as a leader. OC is kind of lame despite Giants having a top ranked offense most years. TC is lame because he refuses to play young guys unless forced to. Get Da’rel Scott on the field. That’s on TC and KG. Design some plays for him in the passing game so you don’t have to take AB or BJ off the field to get him on. He is so explosive and we need more weapons on O. D looked bad but we were missing Osi AND Tuck. Sure Tolly and JPP looked good anyway, but imagine what that line will do with Osi and Tuck back. That should take some pressure off the DBs too. The worst of it though was the retooled Oline. Look at the Pats Oline and how much time Brady has to throw. Giants Oline used to be like that and needs to be again for this team to be good. It affects Eli’s ability to throw effectively. It hurts the short yardage running game. It stops us from scoring points. But it also makes the D worse. It keeps them on the field longer. It makes them have to defend short fields. They were just gassed by the 2nd half on Sunday because the O couldn’t stay on the field and we were short-handed to begin with. We need better time of possesion and better average starting field position than our oppenent. Both of those things start with the Oline performing well, sustaining drives…. and it depends on Cruz catching easy 3rd down passes for sure 1st downs as well haha. But Oline really has to gel and play great or this will be a very long season.

The O-Line

is what wins football games. Ours didn’t do the job on Sunday, and although I know the Giants had a bunch of different needs, I can’t believe that Reese has ignored this unit for the past several years when it was obvious it was getting old. We should have drafted some high round OL studs instead of mediocre middle to late rounders. I have been hoping to see that for years. And now we are seeing the results of Reese’s mistake.

by NYStateofMind on Sep 15, 2011 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Oline

That cake is still baking. We had either the best Oline in football, or one of the best from 2005-2009. 2010 it was still pretty good, although Deihl at LT was bad.

You simply cannot say the JR has not addressed this unit. He has drafted Will Beatty, Mitch Petrus, Adam Koets, and James Brewer in the past 4 years and all are on the team. Beatty is now the starting LT and looks very good with his potential arrow pointing up.

JR has had, and still has quality depth on the Oline. Seubert has provided depth as well as started. Boothe, both Andrews brothers and the other guys mentioned above have all contributed when called upon.

You say you wish the Giants had drafted lineman in higher rounds. I assume you want this to increase the odds of success at those positions. Three things here:
1. The Giants as an organization draft for value. They, like the other smart and successful Front Offices, draft BPA because you never know what injuries will do to your team. I like that JR sticks to his board.
2. The Giants have a coaching staff who can develop mid to late rounds Olineman without as much polish in their game, or as much physical skill as an early round pick might have. And their track record of developing Olineman is outstanding. UFA O’Hara, 7th round Seubert, 6th round Deihl are just 3 examples.
3. Snee 2nd round. Beatty 2nd round. When they are BPA, JR will pick an Olineman in an early round.

Just trying to help you out with this info, I think the Giants are going to be ok here. I trust the track record.

If I am being negative please, don't let it fool you, I am an optimist at heart and I can prove it.

GM and Coaches

have to take a knock too. IMO a successful football team in today’s NFL needs to have a solid system, and great coaches to coach that system. Then you need to stick to your system and it’s the GMs job to find player who are coachable, who are professional and who FIT the system. Reese is always about taking the “best” guy available (basically the most talented or athletic guy). I think you need a few of those guys but it’s more about coaching at this level. All the guys are pretty much physical freaks. Reese reaches on too many guys who don’t fit the system, wasting picks. Again, look at the Patriots who were essentially built by Parcells who also built the Giants and Jets. How many stars are or were on those teams? Yet they were all SB contenders. How many names can you name on NE after Tom Brady? They just get a lot of professional guys who fit their system and then they coach the heck out of them. Behind Brady, the biggest stars on that team are probably the O-linemen, and that’s perfect because that’s what makes Brady as good as he is. Brady wouldn’t be that great either if he was running around like Eli was on Sunday.

by NYStateofMind on Sep 15, 2011 11:41 AM EDT reply actions

There are different levels of physical freaks and we have many of them, who are on a higher level.

This is very important on the DL and WR positions..looks at the teams who don’t have a good pass rush or a good passing game, they don’t have freaks at those spots.
That said JR is an excellent GM in the talent acquisition department and many teams and there fans would totally trade personnel with us across the board.

There has been alot of threads and discussion about JR lately.

Isn’t our record over the past few years, including the title in 2007, the best indicator of the GM’s ability to pick players?

If I am being negative please, don't let it fool you, I am an optimist at heart and I can prove it.
