Giants Coach Tom Coughlin Talks About Loss To Redskins
Opening remarks
A: Good afternoon, I'm disappointed, as to be expected, in the loss. We took a long hard look at the tape and the players took a look at the tape as well. There is not enough execution. There is not enough good things going on. You look at the offense and an 85-yard drive that was very good but why aren't there more of those? Why isn't there more consistency?
You look at our third down, one out of 10, and that's keeping us from having the ball and keeping the other people on the sidelines and without having them have opportunities to score. You look at our special teams and we average 13.5 on punt returns, which is a good thing, but we have a field goal blocked. The ball doesn't rise higher than about six or six and a half feet. There was penetration but that would not have been a factor if the ball would have been elevated the way it should be.
Defensively, we hold them to 2.8 yards per rush but yet we give up five big plays and way too much passing yardage. We have the penalty when we have them stopped. You are talking about a 21-14 game and you have the ball fourth and one, third and one, which really aren't executed and aren't blocked like they should be blocked, in particular the fourth and one. I went back and checked just to make sure and we did guess what the look was going to be, we just didn't execute. We didn't get it down.
We have a ways to go with the process, with the execution. Offensively it has to happen and I think it will happen with a better week of practice. I think we had a very good practice last week Wednesday and they were ok Thursday and Friday. We need to do a better job of preparing ourselves, and practicing well and putting ourselves in game speed. I think, now that we have seen this tape, there can be some development and some drastic improvement. When you look at the penalties, we had gone down there and played the last five times and only had 16 penalties; last night we had eight. When you want to blame it on the rookies, there was only one rookie that had a penalty. We have guys that have played the game and been in the league and are reliable, dependable football players that all of a sudden were penalized yesterday.
There isn't any doubt that we all felt the emotions of the day and we were all very excited about playing. Our ability to do some mixing and matching and to play the run well from a standpoint of defense, I think that is a positive thing we can grow on. The special teams aspect in regards to the punt return was a plus. We have a lot of young guys playing on special teams and hopefully this experience will settle those young guys down. Disappointed to put ourselves in position to win and not win, that is extremely frustrating to me and everyone else in the building, players included. There is a constant reminder, I am constantly reminding the players about having the ability to recognize the opportunity that is presented in the game to give you a chance to win and taking advantage of it. We just didn't do that.
Q: Is it safe to say these are growing pains with the offensive line?
A: I don't know. We didn't play as well as we can play. You can say it anyway you want. There is no excuse for it. We didn't play as well as we can and sometimes the very quick adjustments are not being made exactly the way they should be made. Of course, Victor drops the first third and eight and who knows what just keeping the ball right there may have done for us. That is not to make an excuse for later on when we had a third and three and didn't make it and a third and one and didn't make it. We definitely have some work to do to get where we want offensively. I won't take anything away from the Redskins, they played hard and they did the things they had to do to win the game but I am disappointed in our ability to not take full advantage of what we had.
Q: What happened on the fourth down play?
A: We didn't go back after Cofield went away. The center had a chance to get up. If he would've taken the outside backer, there was a little crease to go there.
Q: Was there any pattern of reason for the third and longs?
A: I didn't see any patterns. I saw the run game make yardage on some occasions and not on others. There definitely were some third and longs but some of them were created by penalties and that's what set us back.
Q: Why does going East-West instead of North-South on short make more sense?
A: It doesn't. You are trying to get North-South. The way the play starts out, for example the second one, the third and one, was an absolute toss and the ball was supposed to go outside. The fourth and one had a chance to by virtue of the course, go in any one of a multitude because of the crease and where the seal took place. We just described it, it didn't.
Q: Do players have the opportunity to say they want the ball?
A: Most of them take that position but they may not verbalize it a lot. They do want the ball.
Q: How does that work?
A: The decisions are made as you develop a game plan and you have an idea of how many times you want the ball in someone's hands.
Re: playing more zone defense in second half
A: In the second half probably although we did play some man.
Q: Is that a product of personnel?
A: No. We had both coming in and we didn't play a lot of man in the first half but in order to incorporate some of the pressures you do want, you pretty much have to play some.
Q: Did you see a lack of urgency or too much cushion on defense?
A: I'm not sure about that. I do know on the fourth and five we were off a little more than what we would have coached it and we weren't even able to get up there and keep it at five.
Q: Do you anticipate getting more carries for Brandon Jackobs?
A: I think if we run the ball more, we will have more of a balance.
Q: Why wasn't Brandon in on the short yardage plays?
A: Some of the runs have Brandon highlighted and some have Ahmad. You just happened to see some that had Ahmad.
Q: Why are you not using Mario Manningham more in the slot?
A: You can maneuver that around. He does end up in there sometimes but if you just go out there in a base look, we have tried to teach Domenik, Victor and we have done some with Jerrell. We have concentrated more with those people in there to be able to take advantage of Mario's speed on top.
Q: Is it a matter of reps and experience?
A: Some of that certainly and opportunities and time, which we don't have.
Q: What happened on Eli's interception?
A: You have to find the throwing lane but I'm sure in that particular situation, we were trying to get the hands down and we didn't. We weren't able to get them down and his hands came up just as quickly as the ball was to be released. That was a very athletic play by an outside linebacker but part of the success of the play is that you have to get the hands down and maneuver to have a throwing lane.
Q: What did you think about Eli's performance?
A: There is no question about what he was able to do with the long connection to Hakeem. That was a great play. He made other good plays throughout the course of the game, I just think that in the second half we needed more plays. We needed to come back in the second half and repeat the 14 points, if nothing more. I was hoping that once we got the ball at the 27 after the turnover, that was going to be the time for us to really make something happen. We did have two pretty good plays. Henry catches the ball in the flat and he just can't quite get turned up enough to get the first and it turns into a third and one, which we should have picked up anyway.
Q: When an offense is struggling and you are still looking for your tight end and third receiver, is it Eli's job to overcome that and make things happen?
A: They all have to. There are 11 of them out there and you are not going to have success with anything on offense without all 11 making a strong contribution. Eli is the quarterback so that is where everything wants to be centered but it takes everybody and all you have to do is look at the ball being handed off or tossed and realize that once the job is completed by him in that regard, I don't know what he has to do in that part of it. He directs traffic and gets us in the right place. The way he maneuvers in the pocket and stepped up and made the play to Hakeem, the plays to Ballard. We got the ball on the nine and he makes the play and hits Ballard and you are there again. Let's go. That is the frustration.
Q: Do you think special teams could have helped more?
A: 13.5 with a long of 18, I thought that was improvement on our punt returns for sure. The way the game is going and the way people are driving the ball, your kickoff return, I don't know what you are going to count on. You may get a fortunate one and bring it out although Banks didn't. They had a 25-yard punt return but the ball gets absolutely smashed out of the end zone a couple times with no return and a start at the 20.
Q: Do you look at Green Bay last year with its injuries and point that out to your team?
A: We have looked at that and we definitely pointed it out to our team. That is a lot to overcome but their circumstances a year ago aren't to far from ours in 07. We have some experience along those lines but we just have to get going. We just have to start playing. The mistakes from the preseason, it is not preseason. Nothing else matters except getting it right.
Q: How long does it take for an offense to gel?
A: I hope not long.
Q: Does it fall on the quarterback to create the identity of the offense?
A: I don't know if that is the quarterback. He is certainly going to take the pieces to the puzzle that he is presented with and carry out and execute the offense the way it is designed. The exact identity of how it is going to be is not the quarterback.
Q: How is Hakeem?
A: He is being evaluated right now. We know that he does have an injury but we don't know to what extent.
Q: What kind of injury?
A: I think the knee.
Q: Is there going to be a point when you can rely on the special teams?
A: I thought the punt returns were pretty good. I didn't see any problems with that. We did have some fair catches but we did have a good return average as well. Let's get over there and handle the ball when it is on the sideline or whatever that mortar type kick was. That was scary to even think we would not come up with the ball. We didn't have a lot of success bringing it out of the end zone. I'm not sure exactly how this is going to go. We haven't seen that many real games for me to tell you that the kickoff returns are one out of four or two out of four. The 20-yard line appears to be quite a ways away.
Q: Will Hakeem play?
A: I don't know the answer to that. They are checking that out now.
Q: When your team comes out of a game and feels like it should have won, do you feel like you have to rally the troops at this point?
A: Everybody feels like there were opportunities left out on the field, opportunities to win the game and we went out there to win the game. It didn't happen and there are reasons why it didn't happen. You have to point that out because you have to make progress and go forward. It is not a fun day, you are not trying to beat anybody down. I'm the one to blame but there is no finger pointing. There are three groups and we all have to pull together in order to make this thing work. It doesn't happen if it is just one or two or occasionally one or two contributes a little bit. You are looking at just the consistency of lack of point production offensively and it has to improve. It is a group that accounted for an awful lot of yards a year ago and a substantial point per game average too.
Q: Will Tuck practice?
A: We will see. The plan is to progress. If the doctor gives him the okay, then he goes and practices. I would like to see him practice.
Q: What about Osi?
A: That again has to be something that comes from the medical people.
Q: Any other injuries?
A: Nothing that I can account for right now.
Q: Is Hakeem's injury worse than originally thought?
A: Just the fact that it was swollen.
Q: Is Beckum going to practice?
A: I would hope so but I don't have the answer for that. I didn't have the answer for that Friday afternoon either.

Tuck better be alright
I never think that there's something I can't do, whether it's beating my opponent one on one or practicing another hour because something about my game is just not right. - Magic
I think if we run the ball more, we will have more of a balance.

We need to stop obsessing injures
there’s nothing we can do about them. For better or worse, we have the best available guys on the field. Now, they just need to start showing up to play!
Hopefully enough shame and embarrassment will ignite some fire in these guys. Getting Tuck on the field should help the defense some. I love Eli and I think he is a good leader in his own quiet way, but he’ll never be the fiery ‘get-guys-pumped-up’ type so someone else needs to step up into that role.
‘get-guys-pumped-up’
We really miss guys like Pierce and Strahan.
thats BJs job
he just wasnt on the field enough

for BJ to ask to go back in the game? The coaches are stupid. Maybe they forgot about him. I know its not his job to remind them but it wouldnt hurt. Is that too far out there?

Coughlin has got to put his foot down
If KG and PF dont cooperate its their job… Last I checked this was Coughlins team not KG or PF.
“We need to be more balanced "- no sh*t really?!@? you have been saying this for a long time….
Tell KG if he doesnt go 50/50 with the run pass ratio next week, he is fired… end of story… Put your freaking foot down!!!
"Oh god help us all, the metlife blimps are coming, OMGWFTBBQFTW!!!!!!"
"Who needs a Bomar, when one can have a Perriloux"
Well, KG and PF have got to look at Quinn...
and figure that win, lose or draw, they’ve got as much job security as a Supreme Court Justice, cause no matter how many weeks, months and years Quinn doesn’t get it done, we still hear about how things aren’t really that bad and he keeps his job. Maybe dumping Quinn might get everyone’s attention.
Yes, but....
It is not a stretch to say if you guys had all your players healthy, you’d have a much better roster than what the Redskins put out there. Redskins played well but the injuries factored in, which means they may factor in going forward. I totally agree about Eli, someone needs to step up and get the team confident, mad and motivated all at the same time.

Actually
You can insert any Coughlin press conference after any of the last two years of debacles in the space above. They’re all the same. Here’s the thing, and there’s really no way of getting around it. This team just isn’t very good. They’ve played half-hearted, sloppy football for two years. Canty just admitted it. Same horrible calls (no running game second half) same dumb penalties, same collapses. I mean really, how long do we listen to this?
Are you saying that a different coach couldn't get more out of this team?
I believe a different coach could get these players to respond.
Team Ghost: Manningham, Sintim, Beckum, Barden, JPP, Anvil, Ross
Yes. That is exactly what I'm saying.
And the analysts, some good, some bad, have all but said the same. Honestly, just look at the collapses. You rarely ever hear, “I’d love to play for Coughlin!”. Who would?
It's the schemes and the mindset
We took a long hard look at the tape and the players took a look at the tape as well. There is not enough execution.
But that is the wrong idea. You need to consider, why is there a failure to execute (so regularly)? If it’s players that stink, why does he stay with vets forever? TC hasn’t considered that maybe his plan is too hard to execute.
Everyone has a plan till they get punched in the mouth. – Mike Tyson. Our plan goes to crap when we get punched in the mouth. Its time for a new plan, or to figure out how to avoid getting punched.
"That's mostly fans who say that kind of stuff and they really don't understand the process. We have good players on the team. We're not looking to go out and make every sexy splash that can be made. We make solid football decisions. That's been happening for a long time," Reese said
We've been embarrassed for two years, going on three.
Hasn’t seemed to make a difference.
I think he dances
around the fact that one of the better qbs in the league couldn’t produce any scoring. As he says, at least as many points coulda/shoulda been scored in the 2nd half. He talks about the Nicks pass play and the Ballard catch and wonders why more of that didn’t happen. He seems as baffled as we are.
the posters here are so clever, that sometimes they don't understand a single word of what they're saying."
"saying you are right when you’re wrong only gives you the right to be wrong"
An optimist is a person that falls off the empire state building and after 50 floor says so far so good!
don't know about the rest of you guys
but i’m really not even interested in hearing what TC has to say.
people talk, not a whole lot changes….
TC…love ya buddy….but talk is cheap. You should know that.

I've been saying it for 2+ years
Coughlin doesn’t change unless he’s forced to change. His unwillingness to make adjustments baffles me. I don’t care what the game plan was. Sometimes you have to leave the notes in the locker room and do something else.
You see your passing game struggling. You see that your big back hasn’t been in the game in a while. You see the Redskins committing to the run. Why don’t you go to Gilbride and tell him to get Jacobs in the game? Coughlin was an offensive coach. Why doesn’t he tell Gibride to call quick slants and curl routes so he can help the O-line out and help negate the Skins’ pass rush? How about go 4-wide and force the DBs to stay back in coverage instead of taking free shots on Eli?
Team Ghost: Manningham, Sintim, Beckum, Barden, JPP, Anvil, Ross
ghost...
I know where you stand….I think you know me pretty well too after all these e-years
granted I used to fly off the handle a few years back…but i calmed down….but I can’t excuse this stuff anymore.
I have issues w/ both Coordinators, and personally KG is the bain of my exsistence….but Fewell IMO is the one who’s killing us w/ this D. This is the NYGiants. We play defense here. what he’s done to us is a mockery. And it’s TC and Reese’s fault as well….
Remember Sheridan was just the pawn….
and remember the famous quote from Sheridan “I’m not changing much from Spag’s defense…just a few WRINKLES”….

why must we suffer

yea, I called even before the season started
I still believe it. Dan Snyder has given into Shannahan, and Shannahan is a pretty damn good coach.. Shanny will have this team at 10-6 with a tie breaker over the Eagles… (I am not at all sold on the Eagles)
To me its a lot like chess… he who controls the middle of the board wins… The Redskins have been building to control that area. The Giants have that area already fortified, yet refuse to use it. and the Eagles just spent all their money on guys who play around it.
For the record.. the middle of the board is the C, RG, LG, NT, DT, ML….
You control the middle, you limit the turnovers, you have yourself a big fat “W”
"Oh god help us all, the metlife blimps are coming, OMGWFTBBQFTW!!!!!!"
"Who needs a Bomar, when one can have a Perriloux"
as usual can't disagree with what he sees
I dunno any other coach that would have different coach speak here. Game one, things might resemble the same old same old. Will it be? Doesn’t matter, just beat the friggin Rams.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
He can't give them at a press conference
I don’t know that he has the definitive answers, but if he does, I’d rather he not reveal them in this setting. I know many are unhappy with TC, but I have heard players say they want to play for him. Mark Herzlich said he did, for one. It seems like Canty is a supporter.
He did lead team to a 10-6 record last year, which is not too shabby. I think he may not be the best coach in the NFL, but he’s one of the better ones. Getting a new coach is rolling the dice and the odds are the next one would not be as good.
It’s the same with Eli. He’s not his brother, but he’s the best we’ve had in a long time.
Execution
Hey, TC, did it ever occur to you that when you have so many new players at new positions to maybe simplify things and play smash mouth football and start getting away from the complex schemes? And also not having the play clock run down to zero before every snap? And that Eli is at his best with an up-tempo offense?
As for “balance”, nothing wears down defenses like a smash-mouth running game. It also opens up the passing game with play-action possibilities. Try it, it might work.
Marfar
I blame KG, and ST
It may seem the easy route , but seriously when you look at it, showing the different formations (the 3 back set) and misdirection… we were winning the game…
but bad field position from ST, and the complete abandon of run, along with the different formations made teeing up on us easy for the redskins…
where are the pound the rock and play action days… where we got 1 on 1 with our fastest receiver?? I think KG thinks giving options for Eli is the best way for us to win…
but when Eli isnt settled and asking him to trust people he has never played a game with is too much… Limit the options, have plays for specific receivers until the trust comes KG!!! Come on.. you gotta help this team Gel… that doesnt come by 2/3 down and 10 draw plays…
"Oh god help us all, the metlife blimps are coming, OMGWFTBBQFTW!!!!!!"
"Who needs a Bomar, when one can have a Perriloux"
A 5-7 win team
dominated by the redskins, ugh! Yes Eli seems to have to think and adjust too much before each snap.
and to that note
Fewell you gotta play to your teams strenghts!!! Ross and Webster were drafted to be bump and run corners… dont play zone because you are scared!!! one extra second Grossman has to hold on to the ball is 5 more sacks… He got rid of it so quickly because his receivers were so open!! Take that away and let the line get home!!
Scheme to your teams STRENGTHS!!!! especially with so much talent out of the line-up, you cant go vanilla and take away the strengths that we do have!
there I have said my peace.
"Oh god help us all, the metlife blimps are coming, OMGWFTBBQFTW!!!!!!"
"Who needs a Bomar, when one can have a Perriloux"
I swear
With as many people as we had out..
I wanted to see bump and run on the edges and a blitz every single down… have someone stay home for the screen, or the hot route… We do that and Grossman isnt starting next week.
"Oh god help us all, the metlife blimps are coming, OMGWFTBBQFTW!!!!!!"

My wife thinks I have a few "issues" .... I keep telling her I am a Giants fan....She don't get it......
That's okay. Mine is an eggs fan from before I met her. Want to know the definition of humiliation?
Try being present for mm2 with your fiancee who is an eggs fan. I cracked two of my teeth in rage. I get your point.
look...for the record
I’m pissed off….really pissed.
but this team…more importantly….the players on this team are NOT a 6-10 team. They’re not.
I still have them pegged going 10-6 and I will not waiver….yet at least
Fewell, TC, and Reese IMO should really be ashamed of themselves for bringing this Cover 2 Defense on board, but i’ve accepted that it’s not going anywhere.
I still believe they can beat a lot of teams playign this style of defense….I just don’t think they’ll beat the upper echelon teams consistently
that said….I think this team can and will make the playoffs….and depending on who they see will win maybe 1 game tops….maybe two if they get fortunate.
The Oline is just not as dominant as they were in years….and before when they lined up to run the ball it really didn’t matter if teams knew it or not….b/c they couldn’t stop it. Now they can….and they do.
Eli said it today….they need to find an “identity” out there….the truth is….they have NONE.
This entire pre season and now 1 regular season game they can’t throw, or run w/consistency and the Defense is still giving up big plays and/or long sustained drives.
TeamJPP
Not taking a shot at you here
But can you explain what you’ve seen from the end of last year to this pathetic showing that has you believing 10-6? I myself don’t see it. They look like the same team that couldn’t beat good teams last year when it mattered. Worse, in fact.
I see...
Justin Tuck, JPP, Jacobs, AB, Manning, Nicks, MM, Kiwi, Canty, Joseph, Webster, Rolle, Philips, Prince (through the fog), and even Barden
they are simply more talented than other teams.
they will win in spite of KG and Fewell….just like they did last year.
btw…I said 10-6 last year too.
TeamJPP
Yes, the players
But what about THE PLAY of those players?
fact is, they have always had these games....for YEARS
especially in the Eli/TC/KG regime
just look at Wash in ’07….after Taylor had died.
they annihaltated us, and they had no business doing so….outside of playing for Sean Taylor.

I just been giving Ross the side-eye ever since he made those comments after his ’08 season.
i’m sorry…I root for the kid, i don’t dislike him…but I think he’s got some kinda issues b/c he was talking about how he wanted to quit football b/c he didn’t like how he played the year prior. c’mon man. Cweb was ass for 2+ years, but let it go….
Ross gotta let it go…and for the record, I thought for a 2nd year player, his ‘08 season wasn’t all that bad…but apparently he did….idk. I don’t get him sometimes is all.

18- 52
NFL record 34 incomplete passes lol. I was there it was freezing and windy as hell. There was snow/ice at our feet in the stadium and when I got out of my car I stepped in a knee deep slush puddle and damn near got frostbite!
It's OK we don't want anybody on the Giants bandwagon it's faster without all the dead weight!

I went the next week at Buffalo
just as bad weather (freezing rain then snow) and a just as bad Eli, lol. Luckly the running game and defense played great to get the big win.

this
I predicted 10-6 with us splitting with each division opponent. We lost the one to the skins, now we have to beat them next time.
Nobody wins the Superblow in September.
Talk is Cheap! Play the Game!
I think the giants take the division
just the freaking growing pains… is frustrating as hell!
but yes KG needs to help this offense find an “identity” and he needs to do this by limiting the playbook… Let the offence find what works best for them… and then expand off of that..
It seems as if KG is forcing the same plays on different people… and that is a recipe for disaster…
The mark of a great manager is being able to evolve or devolve with his personnel. KG is not doing that.. therefore he is not a great manager of this offense.
"Oh god help us all, the metlife blimps are coming, OMGWFTBBQFTW!!!!!!"
"Who needs a Bomar, when one can have a Perriloux"
No he is not..... He has'nt been.... so why cant upper mgmt see this????
Year after year, the same ol same ol… We do have GREAT players that I believe could mesh and play top level, but they are stifled because of coaching……
reply fail. see below
I may not be the most noble of men but in a town of lepers, im the one with the most fingers.
Giant LB'z SUCK!!? Mark Herzlich, Greg Jones,Spencer Paysinger...Maybe not..
in order to get the identity
I hope the first time they get the ball they just run the ball. If its a 3 and out, tell em Parcells told us to do it. But just run the damn ball.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
agree with most but
the Cover 2 Defense can be very successful , see the Bears
i think tweaks are needed.. who knows if that happens .

it can have success....
I think last year in the playoffs they did OK vs. GB and Rodgers but he and Jennings really pretty much did whatever they wanted that day.
i’m just not sure the personnel here in NY is suited for it.
but i’m really not a fan of it at all

Just gives me chills thinking about seeing him in a Giants uniform

hopefully one of them fall to pick 32
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
WTF?
Q: Do you anticipate getting more carries for Brandon Jackobs?
A: I think if we run the ball more, we will have more of a balance.
Pathetic
I was just about to post that over again too
Why is a question of “if we run the ball?” We had 19 carries between Bradshaw and Jacobs. We should definitely run the ball.
Team Ghost: Manningham, Sintim, Beckum, Barden, JPP, Anvil, Ross
that's exactly why i don't pay him any mind anymore
he’s “Gilbride” status to me….
i see his transcripts and just K.I.M.

I noticed a lot of
I hope, I think, I’m not sure from TC. Uh oh. Never heard that from a head coach before. If you don’t know……..who does? And can we hire him? Or her, for all I care! Just find someone who knows wtf is going on!!!!!
Kevin Gilbride and Perry Fewell are not rogue coordinators
who do what they want independent of the head coach. Tom Coughlin is responsible for all the plays called, that’s why he’s called a HEAD coach. This is the offense he wants to run, and the defense he wants to run, and anyone who believe’s differently, well, I don’t know what to tell you. The lack of execution and preparation by the Giants is squarely on Tom, and if they miss the playoffs again Tom should be looking for a new gig hopefully. Reese has given him MORE than enough talent to work with and he’s not getting it done.
What is this nonsense about offensive identity not coming from the QB?
Coughlin treats Eli with kid gloves.
Q: When an offense is struggling and you are still looking for your tight end and third receiver, is it Eli’s job to overcome that and make things happen?
A: They all have to. There are 11 of them out there and you are not going to have success with anything on offense without all 11 making a strong contribution. Eli is the quarterback so that is where everything wants to be centered but it takes everybody
WTF. We know that it takes 11 guys but there aren’t 11 guys making $100M and making the pre-snap reads and changing the play at the line.
I would’ve liked to have seen, “Yes. Eli needs to play better. He’s an offensive captain and our leader. He needs to get this offensive unit going. It’s time to execute. It’s not preseason anymore.”
Team Ghost: Manningham, Sintim, Beckum, Barden, JPP, Anvil, Ross
I agree with all of this
if he did say that, its not insulting Eli… its asking him to lead the team. If your QB says he’s in the same class as Brady, then as coach, call him out on it.

Wow.....
I wasn’t expecting that from you. Agreed. He is a good qb. Now he HAS to lead. He has no choice. He needs to carry the team and demand more.
I'm not blaming the game on Eli
he was not good… but there were bigger problems then him out there (Seconday, O-Line, run game?, etc.). This offseason when he made the Brady comment… I liked it, didn’t give his text book answer and sounded like he wanted to take the bull by the horns this season. At the very least from him this year, I want to see a 2009 type year… very good stats, limited TO’s and making the WRs around him better… and learn to slide while running

ELI
He gets paid like an elite QB, yesterday was his kind of game to rise and lead the giants to victory. That redskins secondary is trash, and no one can defend him
by Giantsforever on Sep 12, 2011 8:25 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Easy there..
How many dropped passes in the game? How many times do you see receivers run sloppy routes, or even incorrect ones? There is a lack of dicipline running through the team. Can Eli play better? Absolutely! Does he drive me crazy? Hell yea! Maybe TC knows something about Eli’s confidence that we don’t. Bottom line is we played like crap in some area’s of the game, and it costs us. Been happening since Plax went clubbing with Mr Saturday Night Special
by Jimmy Orange on Sep 13, 2011 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions
We lack the personnel to attack other teams' weaknesses
Its easy to say “run the ball”. We had very limited success doing so. The Skins secondary is awful. Landry is out and Doughty is one of the worst safetys in the league. Use the pass to loosen them up and set up the run. Manningham is a slot receiver at best. We have no TE at ALL. Take away Nicks and we have NOTHING. This has a lot to do with JR standing pat. Kevin Barnes and Josh Wilson are NOT good.
Manningham is a slot receiver at best?
Elaborate.
You mean to tell me there isn't ONE photoshopped image of Optimus Prime with a New York Giants logo?? RIDICULOUS!!
I don't know about slot receiver
But eli seems to think he keeps running the wrong routes. It’s written all over his face as the ball goes sailing away.
To play the outside you need to have sideline awareness.
He has trouble getting separation from starting corners. Do you like his chances 1 on 1 with Asante or Nnamdi/ Newman or Jenkins or Scandrick for that matter?
by DooshLaLoosh on Sep 12, 2011 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions
He has trouble getting seperation?
If you truly believe this, you did not watch any Giants game last season.
Yes, I do like MM’s chances vs those CB’s. But, you are right in one facet of your argument, he has to work on his sideline and 1st down marker awareness.
You mean to tell me there isn't ONE photoshopped image of Optimus Prime with a New York Giants logo?? RIDICULOUS!!
Ballard has gone above and beyond thus far
I still gotta see more outta him froma blocking standpoint….
BUT….I kinda had a feeling he was the man, but I had no idea he was “this far along”.
score one for JR.
I thought losing Boss would be our biggest issue (he still may be)….Ballard has definitely seemed to step up.
TeamJPP
Ballard has played well....
Two catches…one he was very open (thanks Doughty) and the other Kerrigan was trailing him and Eli had to throw low and away due to the fact there was NO separation. Donald Lee is still available.
by DooshLaLoosh on Sep 12, 2011 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions
really care less about catching
although that’s definitely a nice to have.
but he seems to be able to block and keep up from sending in 6 Olinemen.
but of course I’m looking to see that on a consistent basis.

Pretty sad
they lost to a Luke McCown led team. And they ran Johnson less than we did Bradshaw

oh ye' of little faith ...
So let me get this right. After one loss …
The Eli Manning haters resurface claiming he needs to step up and lead … He did step up … several times …. He stepped up in the pocket and there was usually 2-3 Redskins waiting for him when he got there …
Kevin Gilbride is also terrible … despite the Giants ranking in the Top 10 consistently during his tenure … Suurrrrreee.
Manningham is strictly a slot reciever … I mean the fact that Steve Smith missed basically all of 2010 and Super Mario had nearly a 1000 yds and averiging 14-15 ypc … Yea he’s terrible too
Stop crying its game 1 … Yes its a bad loss to a team they should beat but everytime our team loses it doesn’t mean the world is ending. The knee jerk reactions and prognostications are super annoying and most of them have little to no cuantitative data to back them up. Eli Manning is a Top 10 QB …. Mario Manningham will finish with a 1000 yds receiving and prove to be a very good #2. The Offense will again be a Top 10 unit and Tom Coughlin will not lose his job so relax

Who's hating?
Dude, they looked AWFUL against the doormat of the division. We are commenting on THAT. No one is hating. You can keep the sarcasm.
BBV is a pretty bipolar group of fans
People are either in denial or ready to jump off the GWB. Still the optimists seem to be whistling past the graveyard. The Gmen didn’t look good in preseason, and they looked worse in the first game. Hard to see a winning season out of this. Lots of injuries, but its also hard to see where they have made good personnel decisions. Many of the replacements are inferior to the originals.
Giants haven't had a losing season since Eli's rookie year
and they’ve had plenty of injuries.
As long as Eli is standing, I can’t imagine a losing season.

there has been major season ending surgeries to key players
and many question marks and offseason losses to our team. plus many rookies filling in, i am giving 7 wins max

this sort of thing has happened before and they made the playoffs
fact is this team is better then the ones in 2005 and 2006 and those teams made the playoffs

I think history repeats itself, and the Giants have a winning record.

7-9 or 8-8
The division might have every team team between 7-9 and 9-7. Can’t see any one team running away with it.
