Game Review At SB Nation New York
The bane of my existence with dual editorship here at Big Blue View and over at SB Nation New York is that sometimes I have to split my best content between the two places. 'Kudos & Wet Willies' reviews will always be a BBV staple, but at SBN NY I have to find another way to review or summarize games.
Today at SB Nation New York I am trying a look back that includes three good and three bad stats and a turning point of the game.
Stop by and give it a look. I know you probably don't want to revisit more about Sunday's mess at FedEx Field, but if you can take it give it a read.

"The Giants, even without Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck, were able to put pressure on Grossman. When they couldn't is when they got in trouble."
This right here is a direct result of Perry Fewell’s Defense.
i’m sorry, i’m not getting into a big “it’s the coaches fault” discussion.
but you can’t just send 3 guys at the QB as much as they did. I saw our Dline getting doubled teamed numerous times simply b/c Fewell didn’t bring enough heat.
the simple fact is i don’t care how many DB’s you have….w/ no pass rush someone is going to get open.
TeamJPP
Yes
When we sent extra blitzers, mostly good results.
I have no idea why this was changed. Send LBz, CBs, Tyler Sash loves this stuff.
All the Giants should play like Mark Bavaro.
Tom Quinn Must Go!
It is equally worthless when people are always optimistic or always pessimistic. Either way I take their opinion with a pound of salt because I know they only have one setting. I post my own thoughts, not what either side wants to read.

Yes
I’m with you guys 100%. When Osi and Tuck are out, we need to dial up more blitz packages to keep the heat on. Otherwise that secondary is going to continue to get abused.
Go Giants!

Agree about the pressure
However I think Fewell was reluctant to blitz all the time, When Osi and Tuck are playing well we get pressure sending 4 lineman. It seemed like without the blitz we had a tough time getting pressure on Grossman. If Tuck is healthy and back next week we might see some diffrent results
by Late for Dinner on Sep 12, 2011 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Agree completely
should have blitzed more and taken advantage of JPP getting double teamed

-John Madden
they stop the run on first down, 2nd down is a small gain
and then on third down they only send 3 rushers and blitz Kiwi or something like that. That never worked.
When they rushed 4 and brought another guy or two, it worked. Rex can’t make quick decisions. But you give him a few seconds and he’ll do what he did.

Three-man rush
I agree with that Andiamo, but I can’t kill Fewell for it. It is what every defensive coordinator does. How many times did Rob Ryan do it last night. I was screaming at my TV every time Spags did it against the Eagles, which he did on almost every third down. It’s one of those exceedingly dumb things all defensive coordinators do because — well, that’s just what they do.
by Ed Valentine on Sep 12, 2011 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions
Blitz was
effective, a familiar scene was occuring, the qb Ryan was in the process of getting rattled Giants style. Why did we stop?
And of course ball control run game should have been the strategy du jour

Don’t know where I got Ryan from. It sucks to get old.

spags did it too vs. Philly yesterday
I’m not saying people don’t do it….in fact I know it’s part of the game….
You just gotta disguise it more IMO
it seemed very apparent yesterday when the Giants were going to drop back into coverage and when they were going to bring pressure.
Olines recognize that too….
and I also think it works both ways, and was a reason why Wash was able to flush Eli outta the pocket.
more disguise than the NYGs
TeamJPP
and if you recall
the announcer (whoever it was) was crucifying Spags for rushing 3.
that’s one thing like about Rex Ryan (makes me sick to say this) but his Defense really doesn’t give you much at all pre snap.
I like how he’’ll also just make a unified wall….all 11 guys on the same plane. how do you account for blitzers w/ that kinda front?! and who do you know drops back?
TeamJPP
very true
Several times I watch everyone on Washington’s D pressing the LOS prior to the snap only to drop into coverage. OIther times, they brought a blitz from one side & dropped the other. Overall their scheme was very confusing. Our defense (on the other hand) was lined up in their basic positions & moving after the snap. Very little disguising. That makes it VERY easy for the opposing QB.
Nobody wins the Superblow in September.
Talk is Cheap! Play the Game!
and if you'll notice...
when they got a lead, they stepped on the GAS! not the BREAKS!
They kept bringing pressure….
TeamJPP
I just dont.......
understand why he does that. If you gets great results from putting pressure on the QB why let up if you don’t have to. Saw the same thing when we had the Eagles on the ropes in the last game and decide to stop pummeling the opponent. This is not Giants defense.
Tin Men
Liked the extra thoughts Ed. The Giants team, offense, defense, and coaches, remind me of the Oz’s Tin Man.
Rusty, with parts that don’t move in co-ordination with other parts.
They are not a well-oiled machine and I can almost hear the screech of grinding joints as they stumble down
football’s yellow brick road.
Does that make TC the Wizard of Oz?
Remember Tin Man - Oz was no Wizard
TC – nothing but an old man living the dream of a nightmare. Sending his troops against a Wicked NFC East, he knows is setup for failure. Hence, why he’ll have to take to the air at the end of the season. PSL’s and ticketholder’s will be gunning for his throat. He’ll leave the MetLife stadium in a hot air balloon destined for Kansas. Maybe he could help them after they’re opener?
Gawd awful!

Three Good Stats
1. blah,blah,blah…
2. blah,blah,blah…
3. There isn’t a third good one.
lol… that’s the only thing I’ve laughed at about this game!!!!
Ha!
See, I can still make you laugh. Believe it or not, I stared at the stupid stats for about 10 minutes, then threw my hands up and said the heck with it.

laughing again...
It’s really quite sad that I don’t even get angry anymore over games like this.
I just walk around shaking my head in disbelief that it’s happen again!!!
and again…
What about Ballard's stats?
It is the beginning of some good news. A big blocking TE that can catch.
Though if you include his “40” time (4.99), it would be a downer. He would probably lose a race to Boothe.
It is a small ray of hope among the cess that was the game.
All the Giants should play like Mark Bavaro.

Not concerned with his 40 time, he was faster than Fletcher and Kerrigan yesterday

yes Ballard did look good catching the ball
but I can still feel that sick feeling in my stomach as I watched him being walked into the locker room before half-time!!
Unfortunately, That’s the image I have flash into my head when see the name Ballard, today.
Any news today on what that was all about?
Rorsch44
reported in a different post that it was a cramp.
Don’t know if that is official.
thanks for the update, I didn't catch it when he came back into the game
The way he grabbed his hip coming off the line w/o any real contact
had me yellin WTF NOW???!!!

Too early to tell
but he made it through the game without a concussion.
Better wait and see
There’s a lot of opportunity for injury between now and game day….especially for Beckam.
Like everyone else, I wish we could get a good look at this guy.
id say hixon
taking PR is good. He didnt look that bad out there.
I have not yet begun to procrastinate
to follow up on my above point
I’m just not a fan of Cover 2 / Tampa 2 defense….
you can all argue your cases that this is “not a Tampa 2” or a “combination of Tampa 2 w/ something else”.
I really don’t care.
I don’t enjoy seeing our corners 10 yards off the line pre snap. It puts everyone in this “read and react” minset and suddenly a lot of things can go wrong.
You saw Cweb and (forget who else) giving D. Grant the business on the sidelines yesterday and the look on his face was priceless…it was like “who me!?!?”….and they other DBs are looking and pointing at him like “YES! YOU!”
TeamJPP
yeah they were all standing around Grant...
and all 4 DBs pointing at each other like
ARolle: “you were supposed to cover him,”
ARoss: “Who me? I thought he was supposed to have him”
KP: “no, no no, you were supposed to have him”
CW: “Not me. That was your guy”
DG: “Oopsie daisy”
Nobody wins the Superblow in September.

When the results are this
I fully agree.
Yesterday was bad defensive planning

THEY ARENT WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE
Sorry that just felt appropriate after yesterday. These are the same Giants we have seen during the TC era. We as a group just got excited and through the blind hope known as “fan-dom” hoped we would see a better team. Unfortunately we the same 8-8or 10-6 team that we have been all along and in NY that shouldn’t be good enough.

Anyone else notice the Rams are trying to overtake our lead in injuries?
"Winning is the most important thing in my life, after breathing. Breathing first, winning next."
yeah feel back for those guys
Jackson hopefully wont be out long but their reciever Amoudiliiilillla (sp.) with the separated elbow isnt good.
I have not yet begun to procrastinate
hopefully Jackson isn't out for too long...
…but wouldn’t mind him being out for 1 game. :)
What a shame for Amendola
He suffered a horrific injury to his arm. and unfortunately, the Rams suffered a horrific loss to their season as a result.
How Would You Like Being A Cowboys Fan Today
Sickening loss and typical Romo stupid decisions with game on the line. Would rather lose game “comfortably” like Giants did yesterday when they were clearly outplayed, than the way Romo threw the game to the Jets.
Marfar
Id rather be in contention
but Romo’s tenure in Jerrahland is all but over. He will be playing somewhere else next year.
I have not yet begun to procrastinate
Talk about having to pick your poison with those 2 teams!!
I went to bed about 10:00 and sleep comfortably know the game was in Tony’s hands
(a squeak-by victory for the Jets is a whole lot easier to wake up to
than having to hear how the Cowboys just won the SuperBowl last night)
This
The last 2 years they’ve pulled countless games out of their a$$ in the last minutes
"Sometimes you make a mistake and you get hit in the head." - Eli Manning
I can't stand the Jets
But the reason the pull games out of their you know what’s it because they never give up, and their ST’s makes Speical plays and does not hurt them all the time.

While talking about O-line dysfunction...
I am not sure how Vick is going to make it through the season (and his 6 year contract). You get a team that collapses the pocket AND contains Vick scrambling….it may be lights out
True, very true.
I stand corrected….“You get a team (other than the Giants) that collapses…”
Fewell
is auditioning for a head coaching job. Look for a lot of finger pointing.
I mostly have. A problem with the Pass protection
And defensive play calling. If the OLine would have protected better the offensive play calling would have looked alot better IMO.
JPP and Nicks look better than I expected when drafted

Two Stars But Not Enough
O-Line needs work, pass defense awful esp with zone coverage. Need more aggressiveness on pass rush to make QB uncomfortable, still not big Manningham fan, tight end still work in progress, kicker lousy and Manning good for 2-3 bad plays/game.
Marfar
I dunno
Since 2004 our first round picks have been:
Eli Manning
Corey Webster (technically 2nd round)
Mathias Kiwanuka
Aaron Ross
Kenny Phillips
Hakeem Nicks
Jason Pierre-Paul
Prince Amukamara
All except Prince are starters and key contributors to the team.

i think KP is a lil scared of getting penalties
Before yesterday, he seemed to layoff on some WRs like he doesnt want to get a penalty for dislocating them from the ball. I think he’s trying to ease into a little bit this season
Nobody wins the Superblow in September.
Talk is Cheap! Play the Game!
Cause if he hits a defenseless WR they'll fine him $100K

Aaron Ross???? What r u smokin!
He’s been a key contributor to the IR, or weekly injury report. He got smoked last night, and I could care less about thinking he had help over the top. He stated he hated to play off man coverage, so he was positioned by Fewell to play his receiver. He can’t even do that! When is Prince back? Hell put Coe in!

Secondary doesn't even look half as bad with
Osi, Tuck and JPP rushing the passer. You also have to believe PF will learn from watching the tape.
Oline def. Needs to get better.
And i again if the OLine was better I believe u would have a different opinion on manningham. He did go up and snatch that high ball Eli threw
Could've been killed!
Manning needs to stop putting his receivers inline for Concussions or worse! It’s seriously an issue, either the ball bounces off the turf, or we need Barden or Plax on the field in order to catch them without leaving the ground. In other words, concusssed by Eli.
Team JPP
"When you don't know that you don't know, it's a lot different than when you do know that you don't know."
I agree Eli has major problems with his accuracy
but yesterday Eli made good decisions and didn’t really put his receivers in bad spots ( only the Manningham pass) if you give him time I think Eli wins us that game despite the defensive problems. But that’s just IMO
