Game Review At SB Nation New York

The bane of my existence with dual editorship here at Big Blue View and over at SB Nation New York is that sometimes I have to split my best content between the two places. 'Kudos & Wet Willies' reviews will always be a BBV staple, but at SBN NY I have to find another way to review or summarize games.

Today at SB Nation New York I am trying a look back that includes three good and three bad stats and a turning point of the game.

Stop by and give it a look. I know you probably don't want to revisit more about Sunday's mess at FedEx Field, but if you can take it give it a read.

"The Giants, even without Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck, were able to put pressure on Grossman. When they couldn't is when they got in trouble."

This right here is a direct result of Perry Fewell’s Defense.

i’m sorry, i’m not getting into a big “it’s the coaches fault” discussion.

but you can’t just send 3 guys at the QB as much as they did. I saw our Dline getting doubled teamed numerous times simply b/c Fewell didn’t bring enough heat.

the simple fact is i don’t care how many DB’s you have….w/ no pass rush someone is going to get open.

Yes

When we sent extra blitzers, mostly good results.

I have no idea why this was changed. Send LBz, CBs, Tyler Sash loves this stuff.

All the Giants should play like Mark Bavaro.

Yes

I’m with you guys 100%. When Osi and Tuck are out, we need to dial up more blitz packages to keep the heat on. Otherwise that secondary is going to continue to get abused.

Agree about the pressure

However I think Fewell was reluctant to blitz all the time, When Osi and Tuck are playing well we get pressure sending 4 lineman. It seemed like without the blitz we had a tough time getting pressure on Grossman. If Tuck is healthy and back next week we might see some diffrent results

should have blitzed more and taken advantage of JPP getting double teamed

they stop the run on first down, 2nd down is a small gain

and then on third down they only send 3 rushers and blitz Kiwi or something like that. That never worked.

When they rushed 4 and brought another guy or two, it worked. Rex can’t make quick decisions. But you give him a few seconds and he’ll do what he did.

Three-man rush

I agree with that Andiamo, but I can’t kill Fewell for it. It is what every defensive coordinator does. How many times did Rob Ryan do it last night. I was screaming at my TV every time Spags did it against the Eagles, which he did on almost every third down. It’s one of those exceedingly dumb things all defensive coordinators do because — well, that’s just what they do.

by Ed Valentine on Sep 12, 2011 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Blitz was

effective, a familiar scene was occuring, the qb Ryan was in the process of getting rattled Giants style. Why did we stop?

spags did it too vs. Philly yesterday

I’m not saying people don’t do it….in fact I know it’s part of the game….

You just gotta disguise it more IMO

it seemed very apparent yesterday when the Giants were going to drop back into coverage and when they were going to bring pressure.

Olines recognize that too….

and I also think it works both ways, and was a reason why Wash was able to flush Eli outta the pocket.

more disguise than the NYGs

and if you recall

the announcer (whoever it was) was crucifying Spags for rushing 3.

that’s one thing like about Rex Ryan (makes me sick to say this) but his Defense really doesn’t give you much at all pre snap.

I like how he’’ll also just make a unified wall….all 11 guys on the same plane. how do you account for blitzers w/ that kinda front?! and who do you know drops back?

TeamJPP

by andiamo708 on Sep 12, 2011 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

very true

Several times I watch everyone on Washington’s D pressing the LOS prior to the snap only to drop into coverage. OIther times, they brought a blitz from one side & dropped the other. Overall their scheme was very confusing. Our defense (on the other hand) was lined up in their basic positions & moving after the snap. Very little disguising. That makes it VERY easy for the opposing QB.

Tin Men

Liked the extra thoughts Ed. The Giants team, offense, defense, and coaches, remind me of the Oz’s Tin Man.
Rusty, with parts that don’t move in co-ordination with other parts.
They are not a well-oiled machine and I can almost hear the screech of grinding joints as they stumble down
football’s yellow brick road.

Remember Tin Man - Oz was no Wizard

TC – nothing but an old man living the dream of a nightmare. Sending his troops against a Wicked NFC East, he knows is setup for failure. Hence, why he’ll have to take to the air at the end of the season. PSL’s and ticketholder’s will be gunning for his throat. He’ll leave the MetLife stadium in a hot air balloon destined for Kansas. Maybe he could help them after they’re opener?

What about Ballard's stats?

It is the beginning of some good news. A big blocking TE that can catch.

Though if you include his “40” time (4.99), it would be a downer. He would probably lose a race to Boothe.

It is a small ray of hope among the cess that was the game.

you can all argue your cases that this is “not a Tampa 2” or a “combination of Tampa 2 w/ something else”.

I really don’t care.

I don’t enjoy seeing our corners 10 yards off the line pre snap. It puts everyone in this “read and react” minset and suddenly a lot of things can go wrong.

You saw Cweb and (forget who else) giving D. Grant the business on the sidelines yesterday and the look on his face was priceless…it was like “who me!?!?”….and they other DBs are looking and pointing at him like “YES! YOU!”
