Giants At Redskins: Five Things To Watch

Here are my thoughts on five things to watch Sunday when the New York Giants open their season against the Washington Redskins.

  1. Can The Giants Take Advantage of Washington's Secondary? The Redskins will be without safety LaRon Landry (how about that, players on other teams get hurt, too) and DeAngelo Hall and Josh Wilson are not exactly Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie. The Giants should get opportunities for big plays -- and to win they will have to hit them.
  2. How Will The Giants' Revamped Offensive Line Hold Up? There were lots of positive signs in the preseason. New center David Baas looks like a nice player, and new left tackle Will Beatty did a good job. Beatty will often have to try and keep Brian Orakpo out of Eli Manning's face on Sunday, and that will be a good test.
  3. Can Greg Jones Do The Job? Everyone around the Giants is saying the right things, but the reality is no one wanted -- or expected to see the rookie sixth-round pick starting in his NFL debut. Expect the Redskins to run right at Jones and new starting defensive tackle Linval Joseph to find out if they can hold up.
  4. Can The Giants Contain Brandon Banks? Banks is Washington's dangerous return man. The Giants have a lot of young, eager players on their coverage teams. Let's see if they measure up to what will be a stern first test.
  5. Good Eli Or Bad Eli? Quarterback Eli Manning has talked a ton about not being a 25-interception quarterback, which he was last season. This season he has to prove it. Watch the quality of his decisions and the number of balls that he throws up for grabs.
