Giants 18, Patriots 17: Youth Is Served

I have no idea how this season will work out. The New York Giants could be extremely good and wind up making a deep playoff run. They could go 6-10 and have the fan base screaming for everyone's head.

One thing I do know after watching Thursday night's 18-17 preseason-ending victory over the New England Patriots. There were an awful lot of talented, exciting young players wearing Giants uniforms.

Jacquian Williams, Da'Rel Scott, Spencer Paysinger, Andre Brown ... even the shaky rookie punt returner Jerrel Jernigan and several other young players had highlights throughout the night.

One other thing. The Giants have to cut five players Friday and get from 80 to 53 on Saturday. Those cuts are going to be brutal, and there are going to be some good players turned loose -- players who will quickly get snapped up and land on other teams.

That, by the way, is a sign of a talented team that should be good.

NOTES: Reports from a variety of Twitter sources are that linebacker Clint Sintim suffered a ruptured patella tendon in his right knee and will be out for the season. A really unfortunate break for a much-maligned player who seemed to finally be turning a corner.

if its a torn PCL, what a shame. Every time the guy looks like he’s gonna make an impact something like this happens.

it’s a tendon, muscle to bone. Ligaments attach bone to bone.

When you have

1 carry for 97 yards and 1 TD in one game, and then 12 carries for 114 yards and 1 TD, that’s making a solid case for yourself to stay. I can’t see him not being one of the final 53.

"The worst thing you can do, at least this is what my friends tell me, is to come after me," Calhoun said. "I'm usually better at coming out of the corner than I am up on the pedestal. I haven't been on many pedestals, by the way. I'm a natural underdog, I guess -- sometimes for no apparent reason. And if I can't be the underdog, I'll make myself the underdog, somehow or other."

Jones, Sash, Herzlich, Paysinger, Scott, Williams, and Paysinger are fast, hard football players. All are late round or UDFA players.

That’s a tough break. What’s worse for him is if these young linebackers are as good as they look his time with the Giants is probably over.

by EliManCrushing on Sep 1, 2011 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I think everyone's making too much out of the linebacker cuts

With Sintims injury, Ramses Barden starting the season on the PUP and Koets they can all be kept including Da’rel Scott

http://nflmocks.com/2011/09/01/new-york-giants-final-53-man-roster-prediction-and-patriots-giants-game-recap/

I just think they will carry only two tight ends for now and a few less defensive linemen then last year because Kiwanuka can double as a DE/LB as could Adrian Tracy (if he takes Sintim’s roster spot".

I’m just excited for the season to start now, low expectations all over the place, but a team tha tlooks like it could have a very plus running game and defense could lead to a lot of wins for the GIants this year.

Ware has poor vision

He sets up his blocks poorly, and he can’t see where the hole will develop before it does. He has to wait for the hole to open, and once it’s there, it’s the only place he’s running. If the hole doesn’t open up, he still will try to run the ball where the play was intended, instead of trying to make something happen. He has very poor vision.

Question...

Did I miss something this preseason but why would Dodge beat out Weatherford for punter? I’m dead serious i haven’t really been paying attention to the battle but I just know Dodge is young with a great big inaccurate leg still and Weatherford is a precision punter so I don’t know someone explain this to me I’m not upset about this I mean at the end of the day it’s the punter, but I’m just confused because a shitty punter has obviously killed us in the past

by MikeyG-men on Sep 1, 2011 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Dodge has been getting distance and hang time

He’s not quite where he could be, but he’s looked dramatically better than last year

"That's mostly fans who say that kind of stuff and they really don't understand the process. We have good players on the team. We're not looking to go out and make every sexy splash that can be made. We make solid football decisions. That's been happening for a long time," Reese said

by trueblue63 on Sep 1, 2011 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

Dodge has punted much, much better this year.

Plus in training camp Dodge was working with Kick offs. If the Giants think Dodge can be a Kick off specialist and a good punter they could keep him.

by EliManCrushing on Sep 1, 2011 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm just confused

Because Dodge has upside granted, however he’s unproven and well Weatherford’s proven to be a solid punter and the best punter Metlife Stadium has ever seen haha I’m not wrong

by MikeyG-men on Sep 1, 2011 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Everyone expected it to be a whitewash in Weatherford's favor

But Dodge has gone toe to toe and has made it a tough decision, I’m not sure who they will keep

Sintim - cut him or put him on IR

dude is fragile no need for him. I guess we don’t have to make any cuts to our LB corps. Oh yeah, we’re going to put Adrian and Dillard on the PS.

Scott – I said after last game that he already won a spot… he definitely won that spot now.

Devin Thomas should be our Slot Receiver. Dude run crisp routes. I don’t understand why Coughlin is sooo in love with Cruz that he didn’t play today. Hixon and Thomas are more ready than he is. All I’ve seen from Cruz is straight line routes. I hope Cruz steps up to his responsibilities now or Coughlin drop him down the charts.

Cruz fell behind Hixon and Thomas in practice.

That’s why you saw Hixon and Thomas start and Cruz come in behind them. I think we’ll see a combo of Hixon/Thomas as the 3rd WR.

with the way things played out tonight, and the unfortunate injury to Sintim

I think the 53 man roster, and this is my opinion, looks like this:

Offense:
QB: Manning, Carr, Rosenfels
FB: Hynoski
RB: Bradshaw, Jacobs, D. Scott, A. Brown
TE: Beckum, Pascoe, Ballard (unless we find a good Te off another team, then no Ballard)
Wr: Nicks, Mannignham, Hixon, Thomas, Cruz, Jernigan
OL: Snee, Mckenzie, Baas, Deihl, Beatty, Boothe, Petrus, Ndukwe, Meredith

Defense:
DE: Tuck, Umenyiora, Pierre-Paul, Tollefson, Hall
DT: Canty, Joseph, Bernard, Kennedy
LB: Kiwanuka, Goff, Boley, Jones, Paysinger, Herzlich, J. Williams
CB: Webster, Ross, B. Williams, Coe, Amukamara
S: Rolle, Phillips, Grant, Sash
K: Tynes
P: Dodge

The only ones I really couldn’t decide on were possibly Stacey Andrews over Ndukwe, Dodge over Weatherford, and Hall over Trattou.
What do you guys think?

Manning & Carr, Perrilloux to PS

That would mean Weatherford over Dodge, I live Dodge with more upside, and tight competition, but Weatherford holding FGs and keeping it in the 20 will eventually win out I think…
if not then I don’t mind Dodge at all, and him winning it would sure give him more of a confidence boost.

I would take Trattou over Hall and Andrews over Ndukwe. Others picked up on DeOssie so you are right to drop Rosenfels.

Andrews over Ndukwe and Trattou over Hall.

Not sure who will win the punting spot.

Pascoe and one or two of the corners will be gone after the other teams make their cuts.

The only glaring weakness I can see on the squad is TE and depth at corner. Davis overpaid for Boss and luck dealt us a bad hand with the injuries to the corners.

Doubt it.

Coe pretty much blanketed OchoCinco, that goes a long way. Think they’ll go with what they got, with Brian Williams and Coe as the Nickel/Dime corner until Prince is back week 5 or whenever. And let’s not forget, Coughlin has already said they plan to use Rolle as the slot corner on 3rd down, so we technically don’t need another corner.

Such a shame.

It may have ended his career regardless. He’s going to be looking for a job next season, if he can even play. More likely, he’s looking for a job in 2013, and is going to have to pray someone takes a chance on signing him. Just unbelievable luck for this guy. No doubt he had tons of talent, and was starting to show it the last few weeks. Feel downright sick for him.

Still think they’d cut Ballard before Bear for a new guy, I’d be alright with Tracy, I just haven’t noticed him this preseason, doesn’t seem like he’s done anything, but of all our young players on D, he’s maybe the one I wasn’t paying attention to.

My other question is Barden

He’s clearly going to be back at some point, who do we cut when the time comes to make room for him. Doubt we cut any of the WRs above, so it might end up being a guy like Tracy (or last DE) or the 4th RB, Brown. Guess we’ll find out week 6

I think have to keep ballard and pascoe....

I think they’ll cut Beckum as soon as they find a decent TE, on waiver wire. I think they’ll find guys who can do his job on this team that are not labeled TE…. They’ll cut last DE for Barden when he comes back. Sintim, and Ware, are gone, which is unfortunate, but that’s the business. 2 quarterbacks, and both backups don’t look good so I don’t care. I like your list though, I’d just switch Andrews for Ndukwe. I liken D. Scott to #44 in 2007, they’ll spell him in, and he could be a game changer…hope his success continues.

Beckum isn't going anywhere.

Just because your of the group that thinks he sucks and doesn’t like him, doesn’t mean anything to the Giants. He’s going to be the primary pass catching TE for this team, whether anyone likes it or not, and regardless of who they sign. Unless a team cuts a starting TE, which is not likely.

I don't think he sucks...

I just think they can adjust their packages, and I think blocking out of our tight end is more imperative than receiving right now. But that’s just my opinion. He’s ok, but I haven’t seen enough to say he’s a ‘shoo in’ as you’ve stated.

For now.

We shall see. I hope he shows up. I just like Ballard, because he has decent hands (nice catch in the 1st quarter), and can block for what JR (in the press box) alluded to: back to power running and play action. Which I would be ecstatic to see…I think Ballard/Pascoe would be suited. If they spread it out and go Brett Favre like last year, than Beckum’s the man.

In Reese I Trust.

I'd rather see Ballard then Bear imo.

Bear has been downright terrible blocking at TE, and only slightly better at FB, and we already know he’s not much of an option in the pass game. He’s honestly looked a lot worse than last year, only guy I’d really say that about.

Agreed Brewer in, and I think you got the wrong punter...

I also think they keep Pascoe over Ballard solely for his ability to backup two positions, but I agree they look to the cuts to find a tight end, though if they find an upgrade there and the guy is more of a receiver type, Ballard might stay and Beckum might be done.

Who gets cut in that case...

Is probably a matter of what skill sets whomever they picked up brings to the table. If he’s a good blocker, Ballard or Pascoe doesn’t make it, though I think Pascoe gets kept over Ballard just because he can back up two positions. But if they guy is a receive first TE, you can talk all you want, Beckum is expendable, as he’d have no role out of the TE position. I’m a big fan of Bear Pascoe’s but he hasn’t shown anything this preseason and Beckum hasn’t shown anything since he’s been on the team. One could argue objectively that Ballard has been the best of the three, but I still think it all depends on who the Giants can pick up elsewhere, but I’ll say flat out neither Beckum nor Pascoe has shown enough to be a lock on the roster, while Ballard, who there was no expectation of making the team has done at least as well. But put it all together and we still need a TE upgrade cause none of these guys is a starting quality TE.

by Cranky50 on Sep 2, 2011 1:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I like Ballard better than Bear

Bear would be great for backing up both FB and TE spots, but we can find better
Ballard looked good out there, he’s big (not as big as Boss, but then Boss was Huge), blocked well enough, and caught a pass or two (looks like he has soft hands and ran his route well).
I would like to keep Ballard (IMO – MAYBE poor man’s version of Boss)…but if someone better from another team – then he’s gone too

Sash, Jones, Williams, Scott, Hynoski, Paysinger, Herzlich. SEVEN 6th or 7th round picks and UDFA’s. That’s quite a steal and haul.

The Giants still need a TE. Trade for Hernandez of New England’s? They already have Gronkowksi.

And by the way, I know the Giants draft BPA, but next year I was hoping for either linebacker Manti Te’o (or trade up for LB V. Burfict or L. Kuechly) or center Mike Brewster. But with Baas and the young linebackers, is that really a need now?

by DVGray on Sep 2, 2011 6:06 AM EDT reply actions

Of course the draft will depend on a lot of things that have yet to happen

but I think that a safety in the first round is a good possibility. Phillips has sucked this preseason and he’s a free agent next year.

I’m a terp and I’ve followed this guy since he came to college. Rough life, and he has battle through a lot. I love this kid.

Regardless of all that, lets real this in perspective. Some are acting like he is some amazing prospect out of no where.

In reality, he has schooled a bunch of third-team players in two games.

I hope he makes the team. I hope he is some sleeper phenom. But I’m holding my excitement in check until I see him in action against the big boys.

by Giantssincesix on Sep 2, 2011 7:09 AM EDT reply actions

Agree with much of it though

speed is speed and he does not hesitate, he sees the hole and hits it, accelerates and does not dance around.

That is playing against the big boys and if he can continue that, learn the blitz blocking schemes, he will be the Bradshaw of the future with afterburners.

by SNORKIS on Sep 2, 2011 8:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Nice point

and if you school 2nd and 3rd team guys you’re doing what you should be doing. In 09 Nicks schooled 2nd and 3rd team guys during the preseason. Not saying Da’Rell is going to be Hakeem but when evaluating a rookie he’s dominated other guys in his situation which means he’s capable of being a 3rd team RB with some long term upside.

Hakeem

was amazing in college in his senior year. Da’Rel was never a home run hitter in college especially in games against good programs.

Scott is still unproven

But he has demonstrated in is opportunities that his speed translates to he game

That his size speed combo is somewhat rare, it makes it worth the risk. He can play on STs, he caught the ball well last night, and maybe they’ll give him a shot at KR.

Right now he’s just a might be, which is precisely what AB and BJ were at the same point in their careers.

"That's mostly fans who say that kind of stuff and they really don't understand the process. We have good players on the team. We're not looking to go out and make every sexy splash that can be made. We make solid football decisions. That's been happening for a long time," Reese said

Da'Rell is the real deal....

I know there were 2nd and 3rd stringers out there during those big runs, but the most amazing thing about him is his first step, the guy is flying the minute he gets the ball, and he outran EVERYONE.. i don’t care….3rd string or not…doesn’t mean those defenders don’t have speed. If this guy is used in screen plays, he will be a Tiki Barber type coming out of the backfield. IMO, Scott, Brown both make it, Ware goes, Herz, Williams, Peysinger, Jones all make it. Sorry about Sintim. i think the injury is unfortunate for him, but it may have saved a spot for one of these for guys. I don’t see Dillard making it. Williams reminds me of another #57….Byron Hunt….from ‘86 team. This is actually the best bunch of LB’s rookies that we have had in a long time!…to think….most of them are UFAs!…no way Herz gets cut……worst case..IR….for him…..
Impressed by Andre….i hated losing him when he got cut, but he really looks sleek now. We may have the best crop or RBs since Tiki, Jacobs, Ward, and Ryan Grant…. year. Thats right..we had him too in that stable!!

But why do we need 4 RBz?

Yeah, I like AB2 as well and Ware isn’t bad. But keep our big 2 and the home run hitter in Scott and let the other guys go. We’re Giants fans so most of us probably are watching the 2nd and 3rd teams from all the other teams in the NFL. There are other backs out there if we need them because of injury. But in all seriousness, what are the chances that, if we stay healthy, we play 4 rbz this year? Remember ‘08? it was supposed to be the Jake-Ward-AB show. and instead it was just Jake and Ward. AB had a couple of good games, but wasn’t Ware on that team as well? how much did he play? What about last year…How much did Ware play last year with just Jake and AB on the team. My point, we don’t need 4. Keep the best 3 and wish the other guys luck.

Agree I would like to see Brown & Scott both over Ware

Ware has had a lot of opps, time to cut ties and go with the younger movement direction, even though Ware isn’t that old, he is relatively old compared to the 2 younger guys.
He will be the Ryan Grant of some other team, real good for them, but mediocre for us. Plus the Giants always handle Ryan Grant well (like 10 rushes for 15 yards – WELL).

We may not need 4....but....

We have always kept 4 backs plus the fullback…. I see Hynoski….as Hedgecock’s replacement, Pascoe may not make the cut, Jake and AB of course, Scott and Andre as rest of RB package. Remember, they have to earn their spots on Specials. Scott is the halfback in the Punt team…i couldnt watch specific positons on specials, but i can see lots of fast LBs and RB’s on those teams. I believe TC always carries 4 RB’s plus a fullback. Not sure. Will you ever FEATURE all 4 ? NO. but i see Andre as DJ, and Scott as that intangible guy….the Ahmad of this year’s draft. I would love to see him run behind our first string line. We should also remember, not only are they running against 3rd stringers…..they are also running BEHIND 3rd stringers so…in a way…its all relative. I just love Da’Rel’s burst of speed the moment he gets the ball. And Andre, i like his constant forward motion, and hitting the hole quickly, before it closes. Either way, we again have a nice stable of backs to choose from. I don’t see either of those 2 getting cut. They will be IR’d before they get cut.

IDK if we always carry 4

I think it was just 3 in ‘07 plus FB. But a little FYI, I read that Tashard Choice may be cut by the ’boys. Just a reminder that RBz are really a dime a dozen, bcuz I think he’s better than Ware, AB2 and Scott.

and we needed all of them..

Remember Reuben Droughns against the bears… and he had another game that he helped win…. Without our number 4 running back RD, we dont go to the superbowl.
