Source: Steve Smith Unlikely To Be Ready For Week 1

Lots of questions and speculation about free-agent wide receiver Steve Smith floating around Big Blue View, New York Giants training camp, Twitter, Facebook and pretty much anywhere Giants football is discussed. So, let's see if we can clarify any of that this afternoon.

A source close to Smith today confirmed that the four-year veteran most likely will not be ready to play Week 1 of the season as he continues his recovery from micro-fracture knee surgery -- something that has been hinted at by the Giants and widely speculated upon in other places. Smith, though, is expected to be ready to play at some point during the season.

Smith has been inundated with questions from Giants fans on his Facebook page, where he is very active.

Smith, who set the Giants single-season receptions record in 2009 with 107 catches, had this to say on Friday via Facebook:

I wish i had news for u guys btw.. u all keep asking and i appreciate so much that u care but i just dont have anything for u unfortunately.. all i can do is continue to work out hard every single day and trust that my agent does his job !!!!

So, it seems likely that nothing is going to happen with Smith until we get closer to the regular season, or until there is some firm information on when Smith will be ready to get on the football again.

I said that same thing a few days ago

Giants may be thinking they have all the time in the owrld, no on will sign him if he is not ready to play. Then some team may just come sliding in a take him, they may not care about him not playing wqeek 1, etc. They will only care they got a talent for cheap.

after microfracture surgery??

I think most teams will pass… The best route is for Smith to return to the Giants.. The Giants want him back, he wants to be back… We would also give him the most money…

I say he takes a 2 year deal so that he gets better this year and shows us why he deserves the huge contract… Something like a 2 year deal around 10 million with only 3-4 guaranteed.

but really

for intents and purposes, I am talking out my arse.

no we he gets 2 years 10 mil… your saying he deserves to be paid more than bradshaw, jacobs, nicks, manningham, tuck, osi, etc etc etc etc?

by The Blood of Eli on Aug 6, 2011 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

it would be a 2 year 10 mil incentive laden contract

that is why I threw in the gauranteed part… my guess is sits out most of the year and pulls 1 mil. Next year he plays for 1.5 mil base and then starts earning his incentives.

It doesn't even seem like he's looking at other spots

he wants to be a Giant. Hopefully the only reason he’s not is cuz the Giants don’t want to cut anyone and would rather the depth chart sort itself out, then sign him.

Watch for Beckum

If the practices I have seen are any indication you may also see a lot of Pascoe lined up at the true tight end spot w/Beckum in the slot or at least split off the line a few yards.

I think that could work against a LB

but against CB’s (especially if they play zone) it won’t be so easy for him to get open

Smith

might not get signed until a week or 2 before he’s ready to get on the field. Think about it, no need to save a roster spot for him now, or have to put him on the PUP list and force him to miss 6 weeks. If you don’t sign him until after the season starts, and he’s ready to play before week 6, 2 weeks of practice along with the training he’s doing now should have him ready to go. Then he avoids the pup list, and you can use the roster spot for now to have another serviceable body. Also, it helps them with the salary cap, if he signs during the season, they will already have the 53 man roster figured out, thus their final payroll will be sorted out. It will let them know how much room money wise they will need when they get down to the 53 man roster in order to sign him and stay under the cap. They also get 7 days to get back to the cap level if they sign him in season and it puts them over. This might be the front offices’ plan seeing as how they have to believe he’s not going to sign elsewhere, A( because he’s hurt and B) because he wants to be here. Just a thought.

But what about the guy last year, I think he actually was #3? What was his name, Jose Cruz? He caught a bunch of TDs against the Jets in preseason. What ever happened to him?

Giants have stuck around with injured WRs for years

Hixon, Moss, etc.

I guess it’s because they’re cheap to keep anyway, but I can’t see why the aim won’t be to keep Smith. And regardless of his stats, Smith can’t expect too much. A 2yr deal – 1yr to get 100% healthy, final year to show his stuff & attempt to make the big money.

by Rev. Uniek on Aug 6, 2011 5:47 PM EDT reply actions

Precisely

No one is going to offer him much, and the Giants will most likely make the best offer anyway, so why sign him now. Hold off, come to some sort of verbal agreement, then sign him once the season starts a couple weeks before he’s ready to play, and have him avoid the PUP list.

I wish we could refrain from making players like Smith sound like sacks of grain....

He’s a fine receiver, he got hurt playing the game, and I sure hope the Giants have an informal agreement with him to sign him when he’s able to play. I also hope that includes covering his physical rehabilitation. The idea shouldn’t be to squeeze him to save a few bucks because he’s hurt, but to get him physically well for his return to the Giants if he’s able to resume receiver duties, or for the rest of his life if he isn’t. The idea of playing around with human beings needlessly as though they were interchangeable parts is quite distressing. Anyway, best of wishes to Smith, and I hope he recovers, regains his full abilities and remains with the Giants.

by Cranky50 on Aug 6, 2011 5:57 PM EDT reply actions

that's just it

they are sacks of grain. They’re expendable. Once they’ve outlived their usefulness it’s time to move on. It’s just part of the business.

by GMen56-11 on Aug 6, 2011 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions

If one believes that (which I don't)....

then why should anyone expect any loyalty to any team from any player. Fans to are interchangeable, and it makes no difference if your fans are Eagle fans or Giant fans, they’re all the same, just interchangeable screaming, demanding sets of lungs. Maybe you’re right, but I don’t believe so.

by Cranky50 on Aug 6, 2011 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions

That's not the same

most fans don’t change the team they root for. But every team will lose your favorite player eventually. Your point is invalid.

by ManningHam and Cheese on Aug 6, 2011 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually several players spend their entire playing careers with one team....

though if you meant eventually all players reach a point where they can’t produce on the field enough to warrent a professional contract, in which case, you’re quite correct. But even then, would someone consider someone like Carson, or LT as no longer being a part of a franchise (or its history)? Obviously fans have a greater life span than pro players have a career span, but that really isn’t the point.

by Cranky50 on Aug 6, 2011 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

They are remember yes

but they are forgotten about when it comes to the CURRENT team. All I’m saying is that it’s a business, very few players in a franchise’s history warrant that “family” label that say LT, Strahan, Carson, SIms, and Bavarro have. Most guys are in fact interchangable parts, and if the part no longer serves it’s purpose on the machine, it is scrapped for a new part that will.

by ManningHam and Cheese on Aug 6, 2011 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed, it is a business, but at a point when the team is hoping....

that Smith will recover and stay with the team, I think that if the team is expecting on loyalty from Smith, Smith has a right to expect loyalty from the team as well, and thus if the Giants want to retain him, I think an informal agreement with him to sign him if/when he’s able to perform is fair, rather than expecting him to pass on other opportunities if they arise in order to stay with the team when “it’s time”. I do agree with you that if Smith’s ability to perform at previous levels is gone, he’s not “entitled” to a contract based on past performance, but as long as the team is looking for a commitment from him IF and when he’s able to perform as in the past, he should expect a commitment from the team as well.

by Cranky50 on Aug 6, 2011 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL

you should read my comment again, I said they should come to some sort of verbal agreement. I agree to agreeing.

I don't have a problem with your earlier post....

Just realized you were the one who made it, and it wasn’t the tone of your post I was disagreeing with. Your earlier post I have no objection with. My apologies for not realizing that you were the same person who made that post (which I read a while ago). And I do hope Smith recovers and returns, and your timetable seems reasonable.

by Cranky50 on Aug 6, 2011 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

of course the team

is hoping for Smith’s recovery. He’s one key ingredient to the offense. However, don’t think for a second if his injury was career ending they would cut him in a heartbeat.

by GMen56-11 on Aug 6, 2011 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s a business. When it comes to business decision teams rarely show any loyalty. Yes, they might make a token gesture for a respected player but those are the exception. Look at players like O’Hara and Suebert. Both were long time linemen for a line often considered the best in the NFL. Both were cut with no hesitation. They were casualties of age, injury and the cap.

by GMen56-11 on Aug 6, 2011 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea Jesus man

you shouldn’t watch professional sports then. IT’S A BUSINESS. No one said he wasn’t getting offers or a lot of money because he sucks. He’s one of the best possession WRs in the game. Him not getting a contract has everything to do with his injury, and nothing to do with his quality of his play.

by costanza! on Aug 6, 2011 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Don’t forget Derek Hagen.24 receptions, 15 for 1st downs.
Not bad for a 6th receiver.

In 2010 Smith had 48 receptions, 29 for 1st downs 11 yds per catch, 3 TDs.

Hixon in 2008-9 had 43 recptions, 29 for 1st down, 13.9 per catch, 2TDs, &
1 punt return also for a TD. Plus he played special teams.

Don’t forget Smith had some drops last season, & Shockey led the world in
drops towards the end ohis career with the Giants.

Yes, I know Boss had a few drops as well. But manning is the MASTER in the
“look out” pass and Boss was usually the recipiend of those passes (probably,
Smith was a closs 2nd).

by frankiec on Aug 6, 2011 7:09 PM EDT reply actions

Smith played in like 6 games

He is a very very important piece of our offense and our passing game went downhill when he got hurt.

by mclaren_is_the_best on Aug 6, 2011 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

you logic is flawed at the end

Manning’s penchant for throwing balls high has no effect on what are deemed dropped passes. Dropped passes by definition are balls that the WR should have caught, but failed to do so. So if the ball was supposed to be caught, it would seem reasonable to assume that ball was “within definite catching distance”, thus a bad throw and a dropped pass have no correlation. The two are not related. A drop is a drop, and a bad throw is a bad throw. A high pass thrown by Manning that grazes off the leaping WR’s finger tip is not a dropped pass, it’s a bad throw. Boss just straight up dropped passes that should have been caught.

I'm not saying ANYTHING about his character...

I’m saying that it’s irrelevent that he got in late, as the negociation is completed, and it won’t effect whether players and agents try to get in on time or not. I do think it’s a better deal to get in on time and not fall behind on both the playbook and activity, but it’s not going to happen as long as big bucks are at stake and contracts are being debated. I’m replying to the problem with getting in late, not discussing his character.

by nygmen123 on Aug 6, 2011 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Boss’s head injuries are usually linked to Manning’s “look out” passes.
Smith’s willingness to go over the middle into traffic and Manning’s pension
for throwing passes into crowds where both Smith & Boss are going out for
passes are accidents looking for a place to happen.

After getting rocked over the middle a million times, guys will get gunshy &
drop passes in anticipation of getting rocked.

Would be nice of manning armfaked and hit his receivers in the open field
instead of throwing into crowds where deflections, drops, interceptions, and
fumbles are to be expected.

Derek Hagan joins Kevin Boss in Oakland

Hagan never got a lot of targets, but he knew the playbook and was able to score. Always hoped he would be able to turn into the 3rd WR. No tight end and no Steven Smith, third down will be tough this year. Especially with not being able to have AB in the backfield since he can’t pick up the blitz. I agree that Kevin Boss was ignored unless he was about to get hammered, and playing tight end for the Giants could be a thankless, dangerous, set up for failure job. It will be interesting to compare our 3rd down success this year to 2008 or 2009. We have some good receivers, but who will be our Wes Welker or Steve Smith this year? Third and five will become 4th and 5 a lot this year I am afraid.

This is a worry of mine as well. Without Smith, Boss, and Hagan Eli will have to get more comfortable with other guys on third.
