New York Giants Friday Evening Practice Report

Here is your practice report from Friday evening's traiing camp workout by the New York Giants at the Timex Performance Center.

Osi Umenyiora did not practice, of course, but he still provided the highlight of the evening's practice. Rather, a couple of irate fans heckling Umenyiora did. Whem Umenyiora ventured off the exercise bikes to the sidelines -- within earshot of the fans - a couple of the faithful let him have it.

Among the barbs fired at Umenyiora:

"Osi suit up, you ain't hurt."

"Who gets elective knee surgery?"

"Be a man, honor your contract."

Good work by the hecklers.

Star-divide

Now for some on the field stuff.

Some of you weren't happy with my Eli Manning commentary from Thursday. Well, Friday evening Manning threw the ball exceptionally well. Except for one wind-blown deep ball to Domenik Hixon near the end of practice that came up just a little behind him Manning was on target all night. Zipped a few passes into tight spaces, including one over the middle Travis Beckum made a spectacular leaping catch on while tightly defended by Michael Boley. Beckum lost the ball after he hit the ground, leaving safeties coach Dave Merritt screaming that it was incomplete. I disagree.

Terrell Thomas has had his hands full with Mario Manningham this week, and he showed some frustration Friday night. After surrendering a completion from Manning to Manningham on a nice out route, Thomas kicked the padding on the sideline camera tower. For three days now, Manningham has gotten the better of Thomas.

Rookie safety Tyler Sash made a beautiful interception on a long ball down the middle by Sage Rosenfels. Sash ranged back, sliced in front of Jerrel Jernigan and made the play. Of course, how a veteran quarterback like Rosenfels did not see Sash patrolling the middle of the field is a good question, but still a nice play.

Undrafted free agent linebacker Mark Herzlich intercepted a tipped Perrilloux screen pass.

Linebacker Adrian Tracy broke free on a blitz for what would have been a sack of Ryan Perrilloux on one play.

The final 11-on-11 sequence of the night was a two-minute drill. On defense Justin Tuck was lined up at defensive tackle with Mathias Kiwanuka sliding into left defensive end as Perry Fewell's group went with an extra pass rusher. On offense, Darius Reynaud (yes, a Reynaud sighting) made a beautiful, twisting touchdown catch between defenders on a long ball by Manning.

NOTE: I am headed back home today, so this will be the last live practice report from me unless I return at some point during camp.

Incomplete Pass

Travis Beckum made a spectacular leaping catch on while tightly defended by Michael Boley. Beckum lost the ball after he hit the ground, leaving safeties coach Dave Merritt screaming that it was incomplete. I disagree.

If I receiver leaves his feet to make a catch he must maintain possession. If he loses control of the ball while hitting the ground the pass is incomplete.

by GMen56-11 on Aug 6, 2011 8:22 AM EDT reply actions

Calvin Johnson TD

the rule states:

If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball after he touches the ground, whether in the field of play or the end zone. If he loses control of the ball, and the ball touches the ground before he regains control, the pass is incomplete.

Beckum wasn't in the act of catching the pass

He had already made the catch.

regardless of what it was

if we’re having practice, might as well say its incomplete. In a real game hold onto the ball to get the benefit of the doubt. No sense picking at straws in practice.

TT vs. Manningham

IMHO, Manningham is turning into one heck of a receiver. He made some good plays last year and his play may finally be catching up to his talent. TT should know that he is going up against a very speedy guy, which should be good practice for when he lines up against the Eagles. Come on TT, learn from these mistakes in camp, don’t get frustrated and you should be fine!

by CCE718 on Aug 6, 2011 8:29 AM EDT reply actions

He is already a good receiver

who habitually runs bad routes. It’s the only flaw in his game but it’s a bad flaw. Manningham is a gifted receiver who can catch anything, get his feet in bounds, break tackles, etc. But the problem is his below average I.Q. He doesn’t recognize defenses and doesn’t really understand the game at the professional level. The coaches have to simplify things for him all the time, but in my opinion, it’s worth it because he can win battles out there.

Didn't say he wasn't doing fine...

and it’s public knowledge that he struggles with his routes, just as it’s public knowledge that he scored extremely poorly on his Wonderlic test going into the draft. He’s not a rocket scientist but he has a ton of talent. Maybe you can schedule a dinner with Tom Coughlin so you can pass your own test for posting an opinion on a message board.

It's inaccurate to say that Manningham struggles with routes

when Eli’s best numbers last year came when he threw to Manningham. They were better than when he threw to Nicks, Smith, Boss, or anyone else.

He struggled with them in 2009 but this isn’t 2009.

Manningham might be ready to take that next step. He already went for a few yards short of a G with more TDs than Santonio Holmes. Now the question has got to be can he run the route tree consistently and can he cut down on the drops. If he can then he’s one of the best deep threats in the NFL and he may be the 1st Michigan WR in recent memory to actually live up to his talents*

i mean this as total disrespect to Terrell Thomas , Tai Streets , Braylon Edwards and a slew of Michigan wideouts who weren’t s*t when they got to the league.

If you watch Michigan football, you know Terrell wasn’t all that and neither was Tai Streets. I didn’t expect much of them in the NFL. Now, Manningham, I called from the day he was drafted and will call the same for Roy Roundtree.

hecklers
Good work by the hecklers.

Ed, I wouldn’t encourage them. Hecklers are, by and large, sad, angry people. They don’t heckle because they love the team. Osi is just an excuse.

And on that topic, I would be more down on Osi, if Reese hadn’t just lost us Kevin Boss, and had trouble signing Prince, Bradshaw etc etc etc. The Giants say they don’t renegotiate contracts, that’s baloney. They renegotiated Jacobs’ contract (down). They renegotiated Bernard’s contract (down). I realize that contracts are not just about this year, it’s about leaving space to sign players next year, and the year after as they mature. I’m not for paying Osi anywhere near 10 million. That said I don’t understand these people who take the owners’ side no matter what the dispute. I do think Reese wants to underpay Osi if he can. And I don’t blame Osi for being angry about it. If the owners can renegotiate contracts down, why can’t the players renegotiate contracts up? The owners are taking advantage of the fact that players are locked into deals, something which is illegal for almost every other business. So what other choice does Osi have? Of course I want him back, but however much I love the Giants, that doesn’t mean that we can forget there are two sides in this.

by Cornfields on Aug 6, 2011 11:04 AM EDT reply actions

I think the fairest thing in regards to this

Is you have to match performance to salary. That’s how we do in the real world. If a player is underperforming, you restructure. That’s what we did. While Jacobs had a badass year, the truth remains that he only had 147 carries. 147 carries is not worthy of $4.65 million dollars a year. He didn’t have to take a huge paycut because he did everything he could with those 147 carries.
Shawn Andrews…he barely played and got injured….$7 mill….LOL!

In this case, Osi wants to get paid like a top 5 DE. Did he play like a top 5 DE last season? Yes. Was he paid ($3.5 million) like a top 5 DE last season? No. But you have to look deeper. Over the length of his contract, he was paid in huge gobs over the front end of his contract. Over the first 3 years of his contract, he made $30+ million dollars. The dude even sat out for one of those years where he made $10 mill. He was injured and that’s unfortunate, but you could argue that he wasn’t a top 5 de that year (duh) and the next year where he got paid that much (only 6 sacks and got benched for 5 games). That’s why he should just STFU….because he’s making (when you average everything together) $7 mill a year which is top 10 de money. Which he’s earned for about half the time he’s under contract. That is why everybody is on the Giants’ side this time.

In the NFC beast article by JimmyK

He has the numbers during Osi’s contract. He comes out 8th in sacks per game played and 18th in total sacks. If you look at tackles and tackles per game he’s lower that that.

Yes, his total sack numbers are down because of the year he missed but that still counts. He wasn’t on the field helping his team but he was still getting paid.

Jimmy had a point, but stats are something that can be massaged any way you want

to make yourself look good.

For example, if you discount 2008, and use Osi’s numbers from 2005 instead of 2006 like everyone else (that means everybody gets a fair 5 seasons of play)….

Osi has 52 sacks in 70 games. Only Peppers and Allen have more. Trent Cole has 52 sacks as well, but in 78 games. Osi is a top 3 pass rusher in the NFL. This doesn’t even mention that Osi was hindered by injury recovery in 2009 either

Get Better, Not Bitter.

by BigBlueIntervention on Aug 6, 2011 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

But you are doing the same thing

JimmyK was using the time period of this current contract which Osi think’s underpays him. That to me seems fair, “Does this contract underpay him? Here is how he has performed under that contract.”

I also agree with JimmyK that you can’t just erase the injury year. If he gave back the money for that year maybe you could but you pay the guy to play. Whether it’s his fault or not if the guy isn’t playing you are not getting what you are paying for.

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

by Rorschach44 on Aug 6, 2011 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

I will somewhat disagree.

2005 – 14.5 sacks
2006 – 7 sacks
2007 – 13 sacks
2008 – 0 sacks
2009 – 6 sacks
2010 – 11.5 sacks

In 2006 and 2008, he was injured. 2006 he was out for 5 games. 2009 he was benched for 5 games and was coming off surgery. When he is healthy, aka 2007 and 2010, I don’t think there really are many better pass rushers. If you look at it as a sacks per game ratio:

2005 – 0.9 sacks per game
2006 – 0.63 sacks per game
2007 – 0.81 sacks per game
2009 – 0.54 sacks per game
2010 – 0.72 sacks per game

You would be right that he hasn’t played as well as 2005, but he’s gotten close in some years. If you take away the 2005 year and average those ratios together, you come up with:

0.675 sacks per game or about an average of 10.8 sacks per season over the length of his contract.

While that ain’t best of the best, its still damn good production.

Get Better, Not Bitter.

by BigBlueIntervention on Aug 6, 2011 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions

its good production

but the contract was given for the 2006 season, after he earned the money in 2005. You can’t count 2005, cuz he wasn’t paid yet. He was playing to get paid.

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

by Rorschach44 on Aug 6, 2011 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I know, I didn't include the 0.9 sacks/game production that Osi put up

in my calculations to arrive at 0.675. Its from 2006 to 2010, and it adjusts for games missed. That 0.54 sacks per game is the year he was recovering from injury and pulled down his production the most, other wise I’m thinking it would be even higher.

I’m not going to bat for Osi, ‘cause sacks aren’t the only thing DEs are supposed to do, but I felt there were alot of people here who think Osi plays like poop, and that simply ain’t true. Got to give credit where credit is due. This proves (though you already knew it before) that Osi is a first round pick.

He is healthy and still has at least 4 or so years left in him. Getting 11 sacks and (on average about 6 FF) a season for 4 years? Ridiculous. The Giants were wise not to cave on a 1st round pick demand.

Get Better, Not Bitter.

by BigBlueIntervention on Aug 6, 2011 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

You can't adjust for games missed

He still gets paid for those games and the team doesn’t get anything. Since he’s had an injury history and has a hip “issue” (who the hell knows about the knee) the odds are good that he will not play all of the 32 games left on his contract.

The missed games are still a factor.

I agree, I was arguing more along the lines about his productivity

when he’s on the field, not relative to his contract. And yes, like I said before, he has NOT lived up to his contract, he simply is a really good player, a top pass rusher, but hasn’t produced enough in absolute terms to be worth a new contract.

Get Better, Not Bitter.

Breaking the sacks down per game is also misleading regarding Osi...

Look at 2007 for example he had a total of 13.5 sacks which sounds like a great season but…..if you look a little closer you’ll find that 9 of those 13.5 sacks came in 2 games!! My question being how good was his season overall when he picked up almost 3/4 of his sacks in 2 great games? Those stats point to Osi disappearing sack wise for a large portion of the year and we all know that runstopping was never Osi’s strong suit!

Sacks alone arent the true measure

hurries and rushing the qb to make bad decisions are just as important…I still dont feel he deserves a raise though

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.

Underpay?

Please. How about $34m for 2.5 productive years? Osi forgets he’s already gotten paid.

the fact that they had a hard time getting

Bradshaw to come back, and all of the other signings this offseason, should let ya know the well is just about dried up.

Osi’s trying to squeeze water from a stone at this point.

You down wit JPP?

Osi hasn't earned his current contract

he’s being paid, right now, what he’s worth. If you can throw incentives in there, you do it. There are two sides to this, but one side is in the wrong and that’s Osi’s side. He has one good year and wants to get paid? Please.

I agree

Why aren’t we allowed to heckle Eagles fans if we can do it to our own player? Comment THREADS are closed because they lack class but we’re praising hecklers? Lol.

World Series attitude, champagne bottle life, nothing every changes so tonight is like tomorrow night.

I completely disagree Corn,

I was heckling Osi a little last night,am I sad and angry?
just having some fun at the expense of a guy who thinks he’s better than all the other players..and puts himself above the goals of our whole organization and fan base.
Jacobs didn’t lose one penny,Corn,he got guarenteed $ in order to lower the cap.No sacrifice at all.Rocky Bernard was cut.
If Osi had really performed to the level of pay he wanted,he could have found a team willing to cough up a 1st rounder..he couldn’t because he thinks he is better than he is.

Thanks for the Coverage Ed.

Taking time away from your life and going the extra mile of bunking with a Eagles guy. I would just like to say thanks from a big Giants fan.

The hecklers should

ask themselves if they would like to be paid half what people with the same job as theirs are getting.
