Reese - A Grade C
We all know by now that in order to field a successful team on a long term basis, it all starts from the top down. The Mara's and Tisch's have proven to be top flight owners, offer a stable environment and they continue to make positive decisions for the GMen and all of football.
However, I believe the jury's stil out on Reese...why? Since the incredible draft class of '07 that fielded Smith, Boss, etc...in over four drafts, few players in high draft positions have yielded positive results. Kenny Phillips and Aaron Ross have had a few up and down years, and one is still coming off a serious knee injury. Hakeem Nicks appears as though he's on the road to stardom and JPP has only offered potential. However, there's been too many marginal players, such as; Beatty, Barden, Sintim, Moss, Koets, etc...that have yet to live up to their high draft status and become impact players.
He has continued to neglect the linebacker situation, and has filled it with mid-round draft choices that have yet to make an impact. This is a glaring need...do you feel comfortable going into the season with; Boley, Sintim and Goff? His free agent acquisitions have been anything but successful; Rolle is a decent player who makes a ton of mistakes, Canty has yet to again be an impact player and validate his huge contract, Boley is only marginal for a $25M contract. Rocky Bernard is gone. We've now filled the roster with bargain free agent castoffs from other teams that no one wants; Patrick, Andrews, White, Carr, and Clayton. Lest not forget how badly he planned for free agency as the Giants were only one of four teams that were over the cap heading into free agency. Would you compare the Giants to successful teams who draft exceptionally well and are well under the cap..ie. Eagles, Colts, Steelers, etc..?
They fanned and missed on Plax...we could use him, Manning hasn't been the same since he left. I'm a huge Coughlin fan, but in all honesty, Reese needs to prove that he can make this work or we might be looking for a new GM.

Just make sure you do a Fanpost or something to announce your comeback so we know who you are.

I'll give him a D
I know Reese can hit gold on 1st round draft picks no doubt it. Im just waiting for him to fill in holes via free agency. Unless I missed the Giants playoff games last year, which Im sure I didnt. Im not sure what Reese is waiting for. There were a few cheap pickups to be had that we passed on. I know there are peeps on here who constanly glue their lips to his butt. Wink Wink, but im still not sold.
P.S. should have had a poll.
Manning hasn't been the same since he (Plax) left
yeap your right… Eli has been BETTER with his young WRs. Also.. “They fanned and missed on Plax”…. they meet with him, offered him a contract with incentives but guess what…. Plax went to the team that offered 3 million in guarnetted money, thats ok, he went where the money was.
The Steelers were over the cap before FA started and the don’t make big FA moves.

Manning did not miss Plax.
Please look at the stats from 2009 and 2010 and tell me again that Manning missed Plax.
Also, I’m kinda tired of explaining why we’re over the cap. And by the way, the Steelers are over the cap. The Colts are only under the cap because Peyton took a paycut. If he hadn’t, the Colts wouldn’t be able to sign anybody.

Pessimism is in this offseason
we made no big offseason moves while the Eagles did. Also the cardboard cutout, the decoy, that caught 35 balls in 2008, the missing link, is playing for the other green idiots. All is lost.

Manning did not miss Plax...huh?
Manning did have one of his best and worst statistical years…unless I’m mistaken…how many interceptions did Manning throw last year? A very tall receiver makes up for a lot of errant throws.
You don’t have to explain to everyone why we’re over the cap, no one asked you to. The fact was, the Giants were one of only 4 teams over when the strike ended genius.
So what P. Manning took a paycut…So did Jacobs, and we cut O’Hara and Suebert and let Cofield walk to the Skins. I know we had to, as these guys are hurt now, but no denying they were the heart and soul of the team and we couldn’t pay that kind of huge money to a guy who was just a solid DT.
you are very misinformed....
just my opinion
I apologize if I sounded condescending, I did not mean to.
The reason we’ve been over is that in 2007, we won a Superbowl. Reese knew we had our chance to keep the success going. We added free agents to higher contracts knowing that we had that window to keep the momentum going. Things went wrong, obviously. Plaxico shot himself. Injuries to the OL. Osi got injured. Kawika left. Antonio and Strahan retired. You get the point.
If we were like the Eagles (who cut or trade a lot of their players after they reach 30), we probably would’ve gotten rid of Strahan, Pierce, etc. And no superbowl. The Eagles have all their under 30 contracts all still on their rookie contracts. We are on pace to be in the same situation in a couple years.

It's so amazing that you could explain this...
Read today’s Daily News, the Giants beat writer who knows a lot more than we do about the team couldn’t explain why the Giants were over the cap, but you can.
well...
first off, though my knowledge of the NFL cap is very limited, since there was all the nonsense around the CBA last season, last season was uncapped. So in other words the Giants could have spent as much as they thought necessary to field their team.
Even with that said, I dont think they were that much over…but with the lockout, they were not able to cut people until it was ended. You really think they wouldn’t have done it sooner if they could have?

Eli threw 20 interceptions in 2007
And his completion percentage was less than it is now.
I can’t comprehend the argument that Plax makes Eli look better when his stats have improved without him?

I'll say this about the 09 Draft class
this is the final year a judgment. Beatty is a starter, Sintim is a starter, Beckum is getting more reps and could start, Barden will get chances if he does not start the season on the PUP. Everyone says you grade a draft class after 3 years, so if they crap out this year… then we can call it a failure.

Blahblahblah
Same story different Post right? I would like to know how exactly the guys that are complaining would go about the off season. Would you have liked to have signed an expensive linebacker and lost all our depth? We have ten young linebackers on our squad, Give them a chance to play, dont demand JR to strangle their growth by signing other linebackers and then complain that his draft picks blow. Let these guys play, Honestly I dont think we have a Linebacker situation at all.
I was going to detail all the things i disagree with here,
but the first 11 comments have done a good enough job. Plus it gets REALLY old explaining again and again why things are the way they are.
Only thing to add, is, that the Giants as an organization do not ever reach in a draft for need. They also like to draft DL and secondary in the first round when talent/upside meshes with value. They like getting LB’s in FA. But I will give JR a D/Incomplete on drafting LB’s.
Overall, JR gets a solid “B” from me. For what THAT’S worth. lol
Thank you, you got it done. Follow me on twitter @it's about time you A-HOLES
im really getting tired of the...
“we didnt make any big FA moves so were going to suck” bull-S. you read every G-D sports article (not on BBV) and its all about how the eagles already won ther superbowl and the giants are going 2-14 because Elis the suxorest and Plaxxss iss needed!! and omgggg not every single draft choice has panned out. if you can muster 2-3 guys that start 2 years down the road in every draft youd go down as the greatest GM of all time. Christ people! if you look at people inside the NFL’s opinion, the Giants are one of the most powerful teams in football. You ask anyone on the eagles, the Giants are thier biggest worry. yea they might be 6 for thier last 6 on us, but the Eagles havnt beat the Giants in a while… the Giants have beaten the Giants every time.
This whole no big FA spashes = season doom is insane. get off the ledge! we still got Eli and his 4K yards and 30TDs… the 25 ints is a abberition.. wont break 15 this year. we still got ahmad, BJ, Hakeem, Mario, a sick nasty O-Line, the best DL in the NFL, top 5 DBs in the NFL, THE TOP d coordinator in the league, one of the best HC in the league… the Giants will be just fine
you spelled super bowl wrong
we now call it the superblow

There’s definitely things to be worried about. But we haven’t seem them play a game yet. At some point, you make a decision to let the draft picks play and see what you have. You can’t judge in practice. And you might have a ‘down’ year because of it, but it could help in the long run. If one or two LBs emerge out of all these late round picks, then great. If Austin or Joseph can be the next Cofield or better, then great. If Beatty can play tackle then great. If JPP can cover Osi’s loss (if he’s gone) then great. If Jernigan can be a Welker-type slot weapon and return man then great.
With all the turnover (O-line mainly) and their cap position, this was as good a year as any to see what you got. Obviously some of those prepositions I listed won’t work out, but it can allow for a more honest roster assessment, which can lead to more pointed resource allocation next offseason (in the draft as well as free agency). And if all those do actually work out, then you’re a contender.
But at the very least, I think the O-line will be good (b/c they were when O’Hara and Seubert were out last year), they have Eli, they have a running game, they have Nicks and Manningham, they’ll have a good pass rush, and they’ll have a very good secondary (Phillips, Rolle, Prince, Webster, Ross, Thomas). So I think worst case they’re on the tier just below the Eagles and Packers, but even with any other team in the NFC and that’s even with all those question marks.

Well put...
Couldn’t agree with you more. Let’s see what some of these guys can do. You’re right, on paper, probably a shade lower than the Eagles, Packers, and Saints….but that’s on paper. It’s a long season, and you never know how things will work out. You just want to feel that you’re in the best position you can be to win it all.
we have been built
To score points. This has been JR game play for the last 3 to 4 years. If we take a look at last year. If the oline and receive were heathy we were a 11 and 5 team easy. The defense had to play a totaly new defense then they ever played B4. I keep here the birds made moves and r stack. Well I have news for everyone we are stacked. Stay healthy correct errors and we are the team to beat
