New York Giants Roster Cuts 2011: Predicting The First Wave

NFL rosters have to be trimmed from 90 to 80 by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday. That doesn't leave the New York Giants much time to make decisions following Monday night's preseason game against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.

This first cut is always a tricky one for NFL teams. It becomes complicated by training camp injuries and by the fact that teams have one more preseason game to play, in the Giants case Thursday against the New England Patriots. Some players will be kept during the initial cuts just to be sure starters don't need to see the field for any extended time.

Just for fun, though, I am going to try and predict what players the Giants will let go Tuesday. If my count is correct they may only need to release eight players. They are, as far as I can tell, carrying 89 right now and have yet to place defensive tackle Marvin Austin on injured reserve.

Star-divide

Likely To Go Tuesday

Todd Watkins (WR) -- The Giants still have 11 wide receivers on the roster, including Ramses Barden, who is still on PUP. Watkins is not making the final 53, and trimming a wide receiver won't impact Thursday.

Duke Calhoun (WR) -- Maybe I don't see objectively on this one, because I still don't understand why the Giants kept Calhoun last season. With the crowded wide receiver situation and the fact that it seems a lot of guys have passed him by in terms of special teams production I just don't see any reason to keep him around.

Christian Hopkins (TE) -- The Giants have five tight ends in camp, and he would appear to be the only one without a shot at making the final roster. There just isn't any reason for the Giants to keep him beyond Monday night.

Craig Marshall (DE) -- An undrafted free agent from South Florida, Marshall has watched UDFA Justin Trattou and second-year player Ayanga Okpokoworuk earn praise from the coaches while his name has never been uttered.

Ibraham Abdulai (DT) -- An undrafted free agent from Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Abdulai is buried behind Chris Canty, Linval Joseph and a sea of veteran backups. The Giants will probably want to get veterans Jimmy Kennedy and Gabe Watson playing time as they decide who to keep as backups. Abdulai is not in that discussion.

Brent Clouser (G) -- The Giants are pretty well set when it comes to backup offensive linemen. Clouser, a UDFA from Villanova, seems unlikely to stick around after Monday.

Ike Ndukwe (T) -- A four-year veteran, Ndukwe seems buried behind Jamon Meredeth, rookie James Brewer, veteran guard/tackle Stacy Andrews and maybe even undrafted free agent Jarriel King. He might be a guy capable of making an NFL roster, but it doesn't seem like it will be with the Giants.

David Sims (S) -- The Giants currently have seven safeties on the roster, including undrafted free agents Sims and Jerrard Tarrant. I am guessing that one of the UDFAs is going after Monday, and I will roll the dice and say it will be Sims.

Notes

The Giants are still carrying two placekickers, and I think they keep both for Thursday. I doubt they keep both on the final 53. They still have the two punters, and I believe they will keep four quarterbacks through Thursday night.

I think Coach Coughlin should be fired! How come there are no locals in that line-up. Nothing to give the fans a name they know, nobody on that roster that went to Rutgers University, St Johns or any team from New York or New Jersey. And if the locals can’t get a shot on the franchise from the state they live in, why are we fans going to these games. To see some other state, and see our players play for foreign teams (other states) this is the first time in 20 years, the Giants don’t have any locals on their roster.

Folks around here list the number of draft picks still on the team as evidence of Reese's glory

Folks fail to analyze the quality of those players being clung to. To be a good GM you need to draft guys good enough to hang onto, but you also have to realize when you’ve drafted guys not worth hanging onto and move on.

by bigblue777 on Aug 29, 2011 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

who are we clinging to all that much?

Sintim? Barden? Beckum? that’s who you’re talking about right? should we cut a high draft pick after 2 seasons in the league? wouldn’t that be foolish since most draft analysts agree it takes at least 3 years to really analyze draft picks? so who are we clinging too? I bet last season you’d put Beatty in that category, now it looks like he may contribute highly to our success this season. Same for Beckum. this is it, this is his finals. if he passes, he moves on to the next grade. up until this season, how could we have fairly evaluated him while he languished behind bossman?

we are in the age of “i want it, and i want it now.” fortunately for us, you don’t run a team like that, and we have a GM that agrees.

Yes, I am a Giants fan. Now that we got that out of the way....

Those three are clingers

We clung to Wilkinson through his entire rookie contract right?

by bigblue777 on Aug 29, 2011 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

but how can you say that?

it takes 3 years to analyze a draft pick typically. this is there third year! if you give up on a draft pick any earlier, opposing GMs would love you.

listen i’m not blind, i see that this is a big year for those guys. Sintim is starting to reek of bust, i’ll agree. but he still needs this third year before that grade is in. look, ppl were ready to throw Manningham out the window after his start, now he’s our second best receiver and widely looked upon as a steal for us.

and finally, every team has clingers, as you put it. hell, look at the Jets. they held on for dear life to Gholston, because they couldn’t afford not to. year one of Kyle Wilson was looked at as slight bust material, now from all reports, he’s rounding out into a decent find. snap decisions are rarely the right decisions. these guys need time to prove it, or not.

Strahan was astarter by year 2

Tuck was injured year two and the equivalent of a starter in the rotation by year three I believe. If I thought Beckum, Barden, or Sintim would duplicate that it would be one thing, but we are talking about guys who have shown squat even when healthy. Toomer was the latest bloomer of the bunch from a starter perspective, but had a ST impact immediately setting a punt return record in his first game. Any of these other guys hanging around have an impact like that early? Yeah, didn’t think so.

Hindsight thinking

Since Tuck became a good player in his 3rd year, then it was OK for him to be ineffective and/or injured in his first two seasons.

If Beckum and/or Barden become quality players, we won’t hear anything about how they were wasted picks.

As I said

If I thought Beckum, Barden, or Sintim would duplicate that it would be one thing. These are not guys who have been completely without chances, they’ve had chances and done very little with them. Sintim was handed the starting job and lost it without any injury involved. Beckum has plenty of healthy time where he hasn’t done anything, some with Barden.

Perhaps the coaches were wrong

Believe it or not, coaches can be wrong.

No one can tell me that Diehl was a better option than Beatty. Even if Beatty needed help, he still would’ve been on the field, gaining experience. There was an upside there. There was no upside to Diehl being out there when he was ineffective.

By the way, those coaches are the same people who put an injured O’Hara back in the starting lineup. The same O’Hara who still hasn’t recovered from his injuries and still hasn’t found a new team.

Beatty was making mental mistakes

Coaches are going to take the slower guy that isn’t causing penalties. Beatty needs to show his mental chops equal his agility.

O’Hara was the best at setting protection schemes, so my guess is the coaches got greedy to have him back. Yes, they screwed up playing him too soon.

Beckum / Barden / Sintim

Barden has played alright, and Beckum we need as we have a tight end problem (sounds a bit painful), but Clint Sintim is another story. How many highly rated draft picks disappoint in their first two years but still become impact players? Don’t know, you’d have to go and analyse it, but the only recent one I can think of is that Chiefs defensive end. Seems to me that if they’re going to be really good, they usually show it within the first two years. Put it this way, I would be pissed off if we cut Mark Herzlich, he went on to be elite, and Sintim remained mediocre.

by XYU on Aug 29, 2011 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

This would be year 3 for Barden

Tuck had done nothing in his first two years, ending his second season on IR.

Armstead didn’t become a force on special teams until his 3rd year and didn’t become a starter until his 4th year.

Toomer was a 2nd-round pick so saying that he was a nice returner doesn’t equate to the expectations that you’ve set for high-round picks. You’ve always said that a high pick should be able to start or compete for snaps.

but with 3rd-round pick Barden it’s all about expectations.

Team Ghost: Manningham, Sintim, Beckum, Barden, JPP, Anvil, Ross

by GhostDini on Aug 29, 2011 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not giving anyone a "pass"

I am acknowledging at least making some impact for the team. Barden has had ZERO impact. Not starting is one thing, but find a way to help you team.

whenever he's healthy he's produced

the problem is he’s not been healthy. that is the problem.

if by finding a way to help your team you mean specials, i’ll give you that. Barden is not a special teamer. never was, never had to be, never will be. but after year one, where he was never gonna produce, barring injury, he’s produced when able to crack the lineup. remember, he’s been behind arguably one of the top 3 WR rotations in the league the past 2 seasons. Snaps are very limited when your sitting behind 2 pro bowlers, and a 900+ yard stud in waiting.

for one

being on the PUP list hurts no one. he doesn’t take up a roster space, and isn’t getting a bonus for being there. so he’s in no way hurting the Giants by recouping on the PUP list. the only thing he’s doing is making us wring our hands wondering if he will ever be able to contribute to the team. he’s not been a negative in any way to our team, says all the right things, and seems to be a decent guy.

2, yes, yes draft position means everything. it means he’s making x amount more than Cruz; and it means he has to be looked at and decided upon differently than an UDFA. but that’s life Gats; the VP of a company gets treated with different gloves than the mailroom clerk. it’s just how it is. that’s in every walk of life, not just 3rd round NFL draft picks.

and where is this mass parade of 3rd round or higher busts that have been cut by the Steelers? i’d like to see it.

Barden had surgery that would make Steve Smith's seem like cleaning his teeth

that he’s close to coming back speaks to his toughness. Sintim had major surgery as well, that he’s on the field speaks to his toughness.

No Cruz was on IR because Reese is a chump

Cruz said he didn’t need to be on IR and he would have been able to come back and play that season without issue. Reese needed to make a roster spot and basically used IR to redshirt Cruz thinking he had plenty of depth at WR. We then got banged up at WR and the league investigated the issue around the angle of Reese abusing the IR system to stash a player. The league ended up dropping it, but the fact that it started at all is telling.

by bigblue777 on Aug 29, 2011 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Cruz was IRed Week 5.

Nobody would have guessed we’d lose Steve Smith, Ramses Barden, AND Hakeem Nicks to injury.

How is Reese a chump for that!? The fact that he was able to stash Cruz on IR was genius cause otherwise he’d be gone and we wouldn’t even be having this decision in the first place.

I say chump

because it was a sleazy enough move to garner league attention. That’s not the Giant’s I root for. Traditionally the Giants have been a classy team that plays by league rules, looks to make the entire league better, and takes care of their players. That is not what we have seen out of this FO. I don’t like to see my team trying to cheat the edges of IR by IRing a guy that doesn’t have an IR worthy injury.

by bigblue777 on Aug 29, 2011 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions
