Marvin Austin Out For Season With Torn Pectoral Muscle

Defensive tackle Marvin Austin, the New York Giants' second-round pick, will likely miss the rest of the 2011 season with a torn pectoral muscle suffered Monday night against the Chicago Bears. Unbelievable!

Giants coach Tom Coughlin broke that news during his press conference with reporters this afternoon. and I will have more from that when the Giants make the transcript available.

I don't know about you guys, but I am stunned right now. A triple-header of season-ending injuries in a meaningless preseason game. I am not sure there has been a day filled with worse news for the Giants since this site launched in February of 2007.

Austin, out of North Carolina, was being counted on help the Giants offset the loss of Barry Cofield to the Washington Redskins via free agency. It looks possible now that veteran free-agent signees Gabe Watson and Jimmy Kennedy could both wind up making the 53-man roster.

Deep breath guys

the guy is a very talented and promising rookie but probably would not have contributed much this season. We have an enormous amount of depth on the DL.

That we do.

for the short term, its fine. But what about the long term? Prince and Austin getting hurt only hinders their development. Austin is now not getting consistent playing time at ANY level for 2 years straight.

I’m pissed off now. I’m not saying the season is lost. I’m not saying we’re gonna suck. But I’m angry.

He MIGHT

have played an equal amount of snaps that linval had last season. It hurts no doubt but the guy just needs to hit the playbook hard and get ready for next season.

the team play should not suffer from this. Tough break for the kid seeing how he just got back to playing football.

by Raptor22 on Aug 23, 2011 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s a terrible injury. Obviously, you don’t want your second round pick (particularly one that hasn’t played football since 2009) to go down. However, I don’t think anyone expected major contributions from Austin this year, so this isn’t a bad hit in the short term.

But wow, I mean… sorry guys. I think it’s safe to say that none of the other 3 division rivals want to see this.

Technically, no, but he may as well be. He was a holdout, practiced one day, then got hurt. He’s going to be learning on the fly when he’s actually able to hit the field sometime around Week 8. Even with all the injuries, at the CB position, I don’t see TC giving him much playing time.

Probably the two most injured teams in football last year

Were the Patriots and the Packers. The Packers injuries were well documented and nearly cost them a playoff spot. The Patriots meanwhile still managed to go 14-2 in spite of losing their starting RT, RG, CB, DE and RB.

You can lose a ton of starters even and still dominate the league, both in the regular season and the playoffs. It’s just a question of getting the team to work with what they have, rather than focus on what they don’t have.

similar to the '07 Giants

I seem to remember some fairly significant injuries that season. (Kiwi, Shockey, D. Ward) Good teams can absorb injuries because they have talented guys ready to step up and fill the void. However, when injuries start piling up at one position (CB this year, WR last year) even good teams fall apart because you can’t keep enough starter-caliber guys on the roster and keep them all paid/happy.

With that in mind it’s still better to be in this position now, when there are some passable (I hesitate to say decent) quality guys still (or soon to be) available vs. having it happen in November when the pool is pretty shallow.

Im certainly not a bridge jumper

as you could see from the fan post I put up a little while back – But these injuries are starting to get very frustrating. Especially because Thomas was one of my favorite players on the NYG and after losing Bruce it was the one position we didn’t have alot of depth. I say we pickup either Gay or Dockery and try and keep prince mentally up to speed as much as possible. Also keep an eye out on any CBs that drop once the 53 man rosters are made up also get coe some more reps in practice. Depressing stuff Weatherspoon was looking good.

This hurts alot because the nfl is becoming pass first and our two biggest challenges probably the packers and the eagles love to spread it out. Thank god we have great Safeties! Season inst over yet boys we still have the talent

by BigBlueNewJersey on Aug 23, 2011 5:22 PM EDT reply actions

Why does everyone keep calling these meaningless games?

Should we just start the season with only team scrimmages? They’re meaningful in lots of ways.

They don’t count, but you have to have them to see who can play and get some sort of ‘game’ jelling.

Face it, guys get hurt. It sucks, but we can’t baby the athletes. Shit happens.

We are the NY Giants and we will overcome!

The injury to T2 is a tough one. The loss of depth at CB is obviously unreal and borderline insane/comical, one leads to another. Not having Austin getting reps sucks. We don’t have a " real " TE. We lost our veteran leaders on the O line. Osi wants to be traded. Barden sucks. Sintim is a bust. AND…

This is difficult to swallow

Going into camp you look at the roster and see the potential of what things could be. Unfortunately injuries are apart of the game.

However great teams aren’t built on a bunch of great players. If so, we might ad well forfeit the season and give the Lombardi trophy to the Iggles. The best TEAM wins it all.

My hope is that our team rallies around being counted out and told we arent good enough. We still have enough talent to do something special, our team must play together and guys must step up. Thats my hope anyway.

expectations vs potential

expectations are we should be a wild card team no matter what happens this season. if we get lucky, we have the potential to be a super bowl team. You could say that about 12+ teams though. We just need the ball to bounce the right ways at the right time. In 2007 we had the luck. Last year, we did not.

by B-rod24 on Aug 23, 2011 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

This is not normal, this is bad training practice

A team should not be hit with injuries — serious season ending injuries — like this team is. It’s f’n ridiculous how bad the Giants year had been so far. Questionable front office moves and horrible luck do not foster confidence in depth. Hopefully this team can bounce back and work through these losses like the Packer’s did with their injurious season last year. But, to be frank, with a horribly inconsistent and stunted Eli at the helm (I’ve come to believe he is an efficient game manager with a flashes of brilliance here and there at best) I don’t see that happening. Yeah, I’m the negative guy, and I’ve been keeping quiet. But this is just too much and it happens too often.

So when unwelcome things happen, they lash out with blame.

Sometimes things could have been prevented. Other times not.

These injuries. . . not.

It’s absurd to blame the training staff for any individual injury but when a team is consistently piling on more than it’s fair share of injuries every season you have to blame something other than bad luck.

Sure, this dude probably wouldn’t have seen a pile of playing time, but who knows, he might have. At any rate, it will slow his transition into the pros.
At this rate, though, we’ll soon be able to do as someone mentioned: gather up the best local high school kids and put them on the field. At this rate, we’ll HAVE TO.
My only question is: Who’s next?
Hopefully no one. Man.

Quit playing not to lose. Start playing to WIN! Geeez...

Newsflash

1. The Giants will have more injuries this year.

2. Other teams will experience setbacks and injuries this year.

3. Everyone still has to play 16 games.

agreed, every team goes through injuries, ours is just happening now!

how do you prevent this? have the starters not play or play 5 plays?

by jadedeed2327 on Aug 23, 2011 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Our first two draft picks out --

— one for a month, but still. Are other teams having the shit year we’re having so far? How long can this shit cloud rain down on us? Yes. Do not play your starters, Coughlin!

by ZILLAG on Aug 23, 2011 6:19 PM EDT reply actions

Well

The eagles had two scares (seizure and cancer), and Plax had a boo-boo ankle… but to my knowledge… nope

I’m hoping that the bug just gets bored and moves on, and the roster can stay intact for the rest of the season (which is why Green Bay was able to win it all last year… their injuries happened early, so they were able to move on, and were healthy at the end of the year)

by Raptor22 on Aug 23, 2011 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats right. It all happened early, UNTIL, losing Woodson and somebody else important in the SB. Can't remember who the other guy was...

Guys will either step up and play well or they won’t.

I will be at the season opener NYG @ WAS with a few friends. If you are going and feel like looking up a fellow BBVer and having some fun, let me know.

i'm actually curious

as to how Coughlin’s gonna play this week against the Jets. usually the 3rd week is the traditional ‘warm up’ game for teams, where they play their guys upwards of 3 quarters, but i think this year should be a little different being that we’re actually playing the Jets this year for real. we don’t want to give them much as far as game tape goes, nor do we want them to be able to try to take out anyone with a freebie shot. add to that the debilitating injuries we’ve suffered in the last 24 hours, it’ll be interesting to see how TC handles it.

we should do what other teams do

and sit out our key players (aka Tuck, Bradshaw, etc.) especially at positions where they take a heavy pounding and where we have established players that are competing for starting roles. Otherwise playing time should go to those that the front office and coaching staff need to evaluate.

Bottom line- we should be resting most of our defense (mostly returning players and same system) and test out our offense where timing is key and we have a lot of new players in the rotation

by mannings'ham on Aug 23, 2011 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions

i can agree there

I was thinking the same thing.Wasn’t it last year’s Jets game that Eli got clocked & had that huge cut on his head?

I’d have the starters play a series, and then don’t tempt fate-sit ’em down.

by budkat4 on Aug 23, 2011 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions

This is why Reese doesn't break the bank and make these huge FA signings. And when everyone complains about moving up in the draft to take that special player we sit tight and take the best player available.

One injury to one of these major FA pick ups and the team cant recover.

Having good players and good depth helps. Thank God we have cap room to manuever a little.

Imagine if Nnamdi got hurt? Not that I wish that on the eagles. Just making a point.

by brandon7 on Aug 23, 2011 6:35 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

This sucks.

Its not so much that we have injuries, its more who and and what position.

3 of our 6 cornerbacks are out for season. Another needs like 2 months to recover and hasn’t even practiced with the team.

On the DL we still have Canty, Joseph, and 2 or 3 of Rocky, Kennedy, or Watson.

I’m just worried about this team getting burned at corner. I guess its Ross’ time to step up.

I need a hug :(

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

I think Ross will be fine

As much as I hate Ross for having underachiever for us he is playing for a new contract/ team. I’m worried about our depth and ability to cover 3rd and 4th WR

by mannings'ham on Aug 23, 2011 6:45 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

yeah, i have no qualms about ross-webster starting

especially considering our depth/talent at safety. We won it all with those two as our starting corners.

Depth is what makes me afraid. There’s always talent to be found on practice squads though. We’ll find somebody.

hmmmm? no.

no injury is a blessing, not for the team, the individual, or the moral. Depth is all what we got, just remember that. This enables L Joseph a lot of time on the DL. Poss means more packages with Kiwi on the edge, and Tuck in lined up opposite Canty.

agreed

it could have resounding affect on who gets on the field? b/c tuck WILL be used on the line in the big base.

aaron ross can take over for Terrell Thomas...

marvin austin would have played as little as linval joseph did last year. Imagine if eli, nicks, jacobs, bradshaw, manningham, tuck, etc. Got knocked out for the seaseon?

I like terrell thomas and i wish him a speedy full recovery, but we will move forward.

As others mentioned, the packers were swamped with injuries last year. We have a deep team and JR will pick up pieces as necessary .

A friend of mine was an air force vet. He said everyone is replaceable. The injuries in the air force are usually worse than those in football.

And all while my confidence (minus last nights game) in Ross has been diminshing season after season. I hope like shit he can bounce back and STAY healthy while playing increased minutes.

is that Austin DIDN’T hurt his legs. He’ll still have his explosion next year, if not more so (with the Giants trainers working with him).

Still sucks, but yeah I’m going to take what I can get.

What the flying F**k

I was calm when TT went down but enough is a enough! This f***in sucks. What the hell is going on? We have the worst friggin luck. I was saying the Lions had a tough Preseason but now this takes the motherf***in cake! Bruce Johnson out for the year. TT out for the year. Brian Weather Spoon out fot the year. #1 draft pick the Prince out for 6 weeks. Now #2 pick Marvin Austin out for the year! WTF is going the f**k on! Nobody has been decimated by injuries worse then us this preseason. Did we sell our souls for 2007? I use to laugh at the notion. I’m not laughing anymore.

Why is Tom Quinn still here? I loves me some Coach Clawfin.

i dunno

if back in 2006 I was offered the chance to have 4 above average years and one of the most memorable super bowls ever in exchange for the 5 great years we potentially could have had but likely no super bowl.

I make that deal every day of the week.

by B-rod24 on Aug 23, 2011 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

i'd like to see someone do an injury analysis

First of all it seems the Gmen have had more than their fair share of injuries for the last several years. And I find the new facility somewhat suspicious. Has anyone looked into the number and type of injuries that have occurred there? I wouldn’t count a torn pectoral muscle as having anything to do with the field and you’d expect to see similar injuries on the bears team or the Jets for that matter. What is going on???

I don't get it.

This team continually has more significant injuries (not talking personnel, talking severity) than any other team in the NFL. Is it a poor conditioning program by the team, a horrible training staff, what is it? Yes, I know there’s been a much bigger rash of injuries this preseason due to the lock out and lack of OTAs and training camp, but we just had 3 season ending injuries in one game, and Prince is shelved until mid season. I am honestly at a loss for words as to why this always happens to my beloved Giants. WHY GOD WHY?????

That beign said

time for other players to step up, fill the voids, and become productive players. They’re in the NFL for a reason, time to see the resolve and mental toughness of some of these guys. I for one, am looking forward to it, in the long haul, it may be a blessing in disguise giving more young players invaluable playing time will improve the overall team in the future.
