Terrell Thomas Placed On Injured Reserve; Jimmy Kennedy Signed

The New York Giants placed injured cornerback Terrell Thomas on Injured Reserve today, officially ending his season. Thomas, of course, tore an ACL during the first half of Monday's 41-13 preseason victory over the Chicago Bears. The Giants also waived/injured cornerback Brian Witherspoon, who also tore his ACL Monday, and wide receiver Samuel Giguere. Giguere tore a hamstring in practice last week.

In a bit of brighter news, the Giants officially announced the signing of veteran defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy in a move that had been expected for several days.

Kennedy is an eight-year veteran who played sparingly for the Minnesota Vikings last season. He joins veterans Rocky Bernard and Gabe Watson is competing for a roster spot along with Chris Canty and youngsters Linval Joseph and Marvin Austin.

Kennedy, a Yonkers native, was drafted in the first round (12th overall) by the St. Louis Rams in 2003. The Giants are Kennedy's fifth NFL team.

Classic runstuffer. Pretty decent, though old and had a down year last year.

I’d say he’s better than Bernard.

We will be fine as long as Webby and AR

stay healthy, also with the front 7 dominating, we should be able to make up for all this CB loss. I mean we have more pass rushers than a pro bowl team. there are NO EXCUSES.

Yes... they signed Jimmy Kennedy

Boom, take that Eagles…. your move

Hey coughlin, heard there’s an opening in Cleveland. You should fit right in….. Loser!
I think Coach Coughlin should be fired! How come there are no locals in that line-up. Nothing to give the fans a name they know, nobody on that roster that went to Rutgers University, St Johns or any team from New York or New Jersey. And if the locals can’t get a shot on the franchise from the state they live in, why are we fans going to these games. To see some other state, and see our players play for foreign teams (other states) this is the first time in 20 years, the Giants don’t have any locals on their roster.

Stupid qestion......

The Giants also waived/injured cornerback Brian Witherspoon. I don’t know the rules but does he still gets paid or is he on his own.

by rbman3 on Aug 23, 2011 4:26 PM EDT reply actions

yes

waived/injured means you got an injury settlement (not necessarily = salary tho)

I really liked Jimmy Kennedy

coming out of college. Hasn’t done much, and it would seem like he’d be behind Watson and especially Bernard, but they must have seen something made him worth a tryout.

I know its early yet but

is anybody else not getting the greatest feeling about Marvin Austin? There have been a lot of young guys making impressions this preseason and IMO he hasn’t really been one of them (which surprises me).

by Oppenheimer919 on Aug 23, 2011 4:30 PM EDT reply actions

Not really

he hasn’t seen alot of PT, and he’s had more time off than most rooks. He may be a development this year the same way Anvil was last year, and he’ll be a beast in te future. He’s made a couple effort plays already.

He definitely needs work.

And that was to be expected with not playing football at all last year.

He does not look overmatched, has shown good effort, and with the way the Giants develop Dlineman, I am optimistic. For next year.

Maybe...

we can get someone coming off of the waiver wires. Cuts will be coming soon, there will be some older vets available.

Agree on Austin

He was pretty average last night. I thought he’d be the guy that would dazzle and convince Coughlin to start a rookie for a change.

Medical Staff

Has nothing to do with guys ripping up their knees getting legs caught in the turf or torn pecs. It just happens. Muscle pulls and stuff, maybe, but not these injuries.

Austin

Syler, where are you getting the Austin rumor. I can’t find any info any where?

by TheGifford on Aug 23, 2011 4:45 PM EDT reply actions

It's on the official Giants Twitter page.

Darth Vader: Obi-Wan never told you what happened to Rhett Bomar.
Luke Skywalker: He told me enough! He told me you killed him!
Darth Vader: No. I am Rhett Bomar.
Luke Skywalker: No... that's not true! That's impossible!

by LondonNYG on Aug 23, 2011 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

It's confirmed.

Marvin Austin tore his pectoral muscle. Surgery needed and out for the year. This is just getting ridiculous now.

We are ridiculously deep on the Dline.

I don’t think this hurts us too much this year.

It hurts Marvin’s development and the idea of him contributing alot next year.

I wonder if this was just a phantom injury to just IR him and get the roster spot

he didn’t seem ready anyway. To just learn the playbook then get next year’s camp under his belt, he should be fine.
