Ian O'Connor of ESPN New York is already beating the 'Giants made a colossal mistake with Plaxico Burress' drum. I think that is way too early, and not entirely fair.

O'Connor is an idiot

the answer is no. Any answer to the contrary will be done in hindsight if we have a ton of decimating injuries. Plax isn’t better then the top 2 WRs we have, and I’m not sure what he’d do as a slot WR.

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

O'connor

It’s an easy column to write, and the Giants are easy to kill here after three passes. Fact is, you have to try really, really hard to convince me the Giants ever had a real chance of signing him in the first place. I think the whole Burress meets with the Giants was a publicity stunt.

by Ed Valentine on Aug 22, 2011 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

If Plax messes up I'll bet you O'connor will be no where to be found.

Mr. Mara, JR and even Coach were dead serious on signing Plax. However they also know first hand the risk that goes along with signing Burress so they only offered a certain amount of money gaurunteed. The Jet’s offered him 3 million gaurunteed which was more money than the Giants, Steelers and Eagles offered him. So Plax took the most money it’s that simple.

As talented as Plax is do you want your season riding on a guy who in the past has been a major screw up, weather it’s drinving his expensive cars without insurance to not knowing the gun laws in NYC when he is carrying an unlicensed gun on him. Plax does not seem all that repent so I would be afraid of the guy doing somthing else stupid and obviously so were the Giants so they were only willing to pay so much.

by Late for Dinner on Aug 22, 2011 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, hindsight
Burress had one nice exhibition game. Good for him. He still has talent. Good for him. Can he handle the rigors of a full NFL season? We don’t know. Let’s wait and see before we pass any judgment.

I say we pass judgment now on the decision not to pursue him vigorously. If we wait then we have more information than JR had when he made the decision. If O’Connor wanted to judge this decision he should have judged it the day after Plax signed with the Jets.

The Giants will probabaly move to LA because they suck so bad

I think they did make a mistake...

by even entertaining this nonsense to being with.

stunt or no stunt.

Rex Ryan had a bigger influence on Burress' decision than the Giants wallet did.

Let's agree to disagree - right after you admit that you're completely wrong.

by nywins42 on Aug 22, 2011 5:35 PM EDT reply actions

Let's not get ahead of ourselves

Plaxico was NEVER going to sign with the Giants. he used the team to drum up interest. he played nice with TC to show the world that he wasn’t petulent, and his agent and himi got the Jets to pay a large # for him. what does 3mm mean in the scheme of things? i don’t know, but if the Giants offered him 3.017 he would have shopped it elsewhere.

please. read through the lines

That

is how I feel. So, ripping the Giants for him being a Jet is entirely unfair. Easy and unfair.

by Ed Valentine on Aug 22, 2011 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions

ur 100% correct

if he coulda have…he would went to PHilly

The real point is I doubt the Giants would have paid him that much

In the end the market for Plax was not as big as anyone thought it would be so yes I do think he would have signed with us if the money was right. Plax being Plax I highley doubt his financial house is in order so he was going to the highest bidder. The Jet’s were the highest bidder

by Late for Dinner on Aug 22, 2011 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions

it was his final

“f you” to TC and crew. he even got TC to say that it was a great meeting and they made headway! ha! no shot he was ever going to be a Giant.

and, while we’re on the topic, there is no way that the Giants would have gotten to Eagles’ number for Smith. why? because the eagles bought the 2010 playbook along with potential to get in eli’s head (his fave target and likely the guy who he was most free with re: his wiring). and oh by the way, they have an option on him getting healthy in time for the playoffs. but make no mistake, no playbook/eli brain-scoop, no 2mm gtee.

Here's all you need to know about O'Connor's credibility

As soon as Plax made that catch, I thought to myself that there would certainly be one overreacting sucker in the NY media that will make a laughably huge deal out of it. The first guy I thought of was Ian O’Connor. He never lets me down.

by mtcl05 on Aug 22, 2011 5:48 PM EDT reply actions

besides the point

but, that was the famous slugo route that he took to the house against the Pats. i got goose bumps.

he was sick. and if he comes back strong, he will be missed. but we never had a shot anyway.

by section_112 on Aug 22, 2011 5:50 PM EDT reply actions

Not even close on the fake though

He just outran the corner to the, um, corner, he didn’t put on that sick fake to the inside that snapped Ellis Hobbs’ ankles and made that play even more gorgeous.

by TNYFBG on Aug 22, 2011 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Right

He definitely rounded off his route.

Yes the Giants did make a mistake

Because the Bengals will be in the superblow this season!

they should make some kinda rule/investigation on stuff like that

to see if FA’s have a legit interest or are just using teams as marketing ploys to drive up other offers, someones gonna get monumentally f**ked someday

i don't think

you can ever regulate this type of behavior. it’s the scorpion and the frog story. and by the way, i’m not saying it was the wrong thing to do either. but i’m not going to get on the “get while the getting is good” soapbox

by section_112 on Aug 22, 2011 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

thats true

and id imagine if the FO didnt think they had an actual chance of bringing in the FA, they wouldnt waste the time of the coach/gm and the box of donuts on the meeting table to talk over a contract

not shocked

knew this would happen the minute I saw the highlights of the Jet game

Hey coughlin, heard there’s an opening in Cleveland. You should fit right in….. Loser!
I think Coach Coughlin should be fired! How come there are no locals in that line-up. Nothing to give the fans a name they know, nobody on that roster that went to Rutgers University, St Johns or any team from New York or New Jersey. And if the locals can’t get a shot on the franchise from the state they live in, why are we fans going to these games. To see some other state, and see our players play for foreign teams (other states) this is the first time in 20 years, the Giants don’t have any locals on their roster.

It's called FA for a reason

Plaxico was never going to come back to the Giants. Some people like to be talking heads just for attention.

I don't understand

why everyone freaks out after pre-season performances. Burress had a good game but was facing the backup corner. The media should wait until REAL football to assess whether a FA move or draft pick was a success or bust.

Same applies to JPP. I love him but let’s see him do it during the REAL season.

really, someone wrote a story criticizing the Giants front office?

i think we did

Plax is a weapon to doubt about it. He’s agressive and fights for the ball and we all know he’s huge. We just didn’t have the money I’m sure the the reason.

He got a TD in the Preseason ?

So f**kin what ? So now the Giants made a big mistake ? Who on this team is he better than … Manningham ? No … Nicks ? Hellllllll no!

They’re also ignoring the fact he ruining the Giants bid to repeat and the fact that he’s been a malcontent for most of his career. He can’t be that beloved in the locker room after doing something that dummb

And yo who over at ESPN has a problem with the Giants because it seems like we’ve been the whipping boy over at the mothership for a while.

Using the whole...

“it’s preseason” argument doesn’t really make sense. Are we to say Plax can’t perform well in a pressure situation? That’s crazy. Go back and watch our highlights during our Super Bowl playoff run. Plax was a man amongst boys out there when it mattered most. He’ll probably be very productive and play very inspired this year because he just got out of the slammer – just like Vick did. I actually went to the Jets/Bengals game (my wife’s a Jets fan, I apologize), and just watching him reminded me how Plax is so difficult to cover. It’s almost impossible because he’s so huge and he catches everything. He dominated that game, and to me appeared to be the best player on the field out there. It didn’t matter who was in front of him. There’s so much Plax hate out there, and I think we forget so quickly. I know it’s a lost cause now, but he would’ve instantly improved our offense and garnered respect from defenses. Nicks and Plax are such aggressive receivers they would be a nightmare for other teams.

by WideRight! on Aug 22, 2011 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Stupid Stupid Stupid...

he caught 3 passes against the worst team in the NFL. His TD came against someone who probably won’t be anything more than a Special Teams player. Some people REALLY need the attention it seems.

by sexyscottish on Aug 22, 2011 7:46 PM EDT reply actions

He barely caught it. Wasn’t he out stretched was not an accurate through by pedo boy.

by Giantstep on Aug 22, 2011 9:01 PM EDT reply actions

Plax will be good this year

he definitely works well in the red zone(which is huge) and opens things up for the run game and Holmes/Keller..they let him manage his ankle and he will play hard for the rex’s jest

Opposing passers will be made miserable, seasons ruined
there may be no excuses given, only Mouts Smashed

Which LB's make the cut?
Starters: Kiwi Goff Boley
Adrian Tracy Greg Jones Herzlich Jaiquan Williams(by the skin of his teeth)
Maybe keep Sintim if we PUP Osi if not..he's to be thraded for a 5th or cut...PUP Osi!

its amazing how scornful some people are towards ex players

…all of this talk, but I’m sure most of us would love to have Plax out there to help with that first team offense

I’m happy for Burress, good luck to him as long as it isn’t against us.
