The secondary (Rolle n Phillips)

After the Giants decided to not bring back Deon Grant for this year, and with no other safety's able to start this season (Sash shouldn't be starting), will the Giants show an improvement in the secondary?

At times last season this unit played very well, it was against that top notch competition that we struggled.  We all know Antrel can be a game changer at safety, displaying the ability to make a play happen in the air and return it to the house.  Unfortunately Antrel's roll was different here in NY then it was in Arizona.

Which brings me to Kenny Phillips.  KP was protected last year according to DC Perry Fewell.  Now after having an additional season to heal that knee, should Giants fans expect KP to come back and be that dominant player we saw against the Cowboys two years ago.  Osi needed that 2nd year and look what he did.  Just beast his way to an NFL record 10 FF.  I'm really hoping that Kenny turns the page this year, because our defense will be a whole lot better if Kenny is allowed to roam and do this thang.

Agreed

He’s a nasty hitter, has good size….but plays too far off his man

that's not TT...that's Fewell

he forces them to play “off” coverage.

*3rd safety

I really like TT in that 3rd safety role. He’s a good tackler, and he’s more agile than Grant. Would be good there.

The forgotten duo

we got a ton of turnovers last year, but really not much from these two at all as far as picks. Getting the leash off KP and another year in the defense for Rolle, maybe they’ll finally be that great safety tandem we thought they could be last year.

Also it looks like Sash plays like a veteran. I don’t think he’s going anywhere for a while nor are we signing a vet to waste our time.

i hope for big things with Sash

but really with how often our D got torched last year against the top offenses I do not want to give the keys to a rookie.

I think Ross is moving to safety.

It takes great work and thinking to keep from doing work.

pretty sure that was sarcasm, even though he didn't use "the font"

"Oh sir, the Giants of New York took on the Packers of Green Bay. And in the end, the Giants triumphed by kicking an oblong ball made of pigskin through a big "H". It was a most ripping victory."

by jcalafiore on Aug 2, 2011 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

the sarcasm font is way overrated

sigh...

by nywins42 on Aug 2, 2011 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

hmm Tito didnt sound sarcastic to me

I read earlier today that Ross said he wasnt playing safety, maybe I missed Tito comments in another thread ?

The Giants will have a a more traditional secondary in 2011

Fewell admitted that the personnel is different. He has more quality CBs than safeties. I expect there to be more sets with a nickel CB than a 3rd safety. The nickel CB can cover the slot WR while our safeties play back or the nickel CB can blitz and one of our safeties occupies the spot he vacated.

more traditional Tampa 2

w/ our Corners playing off and our Safeties playing traditional Tampa 2.

I don’t expect much single high from this guy, or much Press / Jam coverage on the outside.

but at least he realized what the Packers and Cards have realized. Rolle is not a Corner.

Hey, only took a full season but i guess you gotta start somewhere right?!

Right?!?

now he’s talkign about “turning KP lose”….what does that even mean?!?! will he be the “in the box” safety when asked….or will it be both KP and Rolle (I think it’s gotta be both when required), or does it just mean he won’t be playing in Bayonne anymore?

I think with Ross basically being hurt all season he played the hand he was dealt

He had 3 healthy good S’s he played em

If Prince and Ross can stay on the field it really changes the complexion of the D. It puts TT in the slot, where you get cover skills with safety size, two ball hawks on the back line, and hopefully it lessens the burden on Goff in the middle zone

by trueblue63 on Aug 2, 2011 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions

this notion that Ross was hurt all season....

is being over blown.

he played in 15 games.

just off memory, i can say right now he got quite a few snaps vs. philly in the 2nd game. I also recall 1 or 2 PDs vs Avant that game. Of course we also remember him blowing contain vs. Vick and giving up a huge 1st down.

I also remember Rolle playing basically as the Nickle CB vs. GB in week 16 …. while Ross wasn’t even on the field. Mind you the following week he (Ross) was starting in place of an injured Cweb.

the truth is, Fewell doesn’t like the kid. That or he just doesn’t trust him. OR actually thinks Rolle is THAT kinda player. Either way….i’m not cutting this guy any more slack….

scheme > personnel

here I am...not even a A. Ross "guy"...

but sitting here wishing we had a DC who could utilize him in the Nickel.

can we just all take a second to let that soak in.

because it just allows everyone to do their job….even if Rolle > Ross. The fact is, he’s not when it comes to playing in the slot in Nickel (vs. a QB worth a damn) And than b/c of that, you put Rolle back in more of a “safety” and one would hope that continuity increases and responsibilities are more defined.

I'm a Ross guy

and I believe that a healthy Ross is definitely worthy of being a starter over Thomas. That would put Thomas in the slot, where his physicality could be put to use.

Unfortunately, I feel that Ross is one of those players who has to be 100% to play well.

13 DLs and DBs

PLUS linebackers? Would be a tough defense for sure…
