Sounds like the allegations against Rolle are more serious. I would love to hear what either player has to say about this situation.

I sure wouldn't...

Know why…it doesn’t mean anything now. They’re NY Giants. Not Miami Hurricanes. This is going to be a mess and I sure hope it doesn’t affect them one bit while they’re here.

I agree

As much as I hate that kind of stuff in the NCAA, our Miami guys that were involved have been out of college a few years and I hope that they can pay it no mind and just get on with their business. But really, is anyone surprised about what happened down there?

Though it is a NCAA issue but can NFL do something about it now?

I hate to see any problems come out of this for our 2011 season.

Has nothing to do with the NFL.

I just worry about if these guys will worry about it. I think they’ll be fine though. They’re far removed from those days.

What can the NCAA do about this now?

Nothing. Not reason to hurt the NFL players now. I mean Andre Johnson is also involved.

The only one worrying is Jacory Harris the U’s current QB.

He has a noodle arm and can’t read safeties.

He had a good 2 game stretch 2 years ago against FSU (turned out to be a horrible defense) and GT (turned out to be a horrible defense). He built his reputation on that and it has been downhill ever since.

the NCAA is a joke. The whole system needs to be overhauled. Why shouldn’t the players get what they can? The whole organization gets fat off these kids but expects them to live like 3rd world citizens.

so true. The athletes are the equivalent of slaves. They work for nothing making teams and the organization hundreds of millions.

by GMen56-11 on Aug 17, 2011 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

its not just in sports

If you come out with a theorem, that changes the world, while at school. The school gets credit for it and therefore owns it. You have no rights as a student or student athlete. This is not something new. The school lets you use their resources and in return whatever you get out of it belongs to them. The schools in turn use it to bolster resources, get more teachers, update supplies and materials. They do this to entice more kids to come to their school. The sports helps the academics and academics help the sports teams..

Athletes are not slaves. Everyone knows what they are doing. Everyone knows the consequences. Everyone does it anyways.

But the researchers have different rights

A researcher can be paid by the school. A researcher can take a job delivering pizzas for extra money. Student athletes are prohibited from working any jobs.

Hey coughlin, heard there’s an opening in Cleveland. You should fit right in….. Loser!
I think Coach Coughlin should be fired! How come there are no locals in that line-up. Nothing to give the fans a name they know, nobody on that roster that went to Rutgers University, St Johns or any team from New York or New Jersey. And if the locals can’t get a shot on the franchise from the state they live in, why are we fans going to these games. To see some other state, and see our players play for foreign teams (other states) this is the first time in 20 years, the Giants don’t have any locals on their roster.

Common denominator does seem to be Butch Davis. I wonder if he’s banned from college football after all the charges are made here.

NCAA is going to have to think about ways to compensate division one players, becasue to much money is made by the schools to ignore it. The scholarship joke is not working anymore if it ever did.

by Late for Dinner on Aug 17, 2011 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

How much do you compensate?

And if you do compensate, you are going to make the compensation large enough that $200,000 Cam Newton esque purchases won’t happen.

And then do you compensate every sport, or just football? If it is every sport, is there enough money to go around?

by ggggmen08 on Aug 17, 2011 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

not every sport

but the sports that derive millions of income. Football and basketball.

Also, it’s the only sport that doesn’t have a playoff. Why? Their reasons are a joke.

by GMen56-11 on Aug 17, 2011 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with that

but that’s the BCS’s fault. The BCS is driven by a bunch of corrupt individuals that want to control how the money is distributed in college football.

by ggggmen08 on Aug 17, 2011 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

NCAA must take control of the BCS crap

The reason their is no playoff is becasue of how much money these Bowls make people, and since the schools get a nice chunk of it they don’t complain.

Don’t forget on top of all the money Football and basketball make colleges, the NCAA makes all altheletes sign away thier likeness. So all the college video games are making ton’s of money for the NCAA while the altheltes image gets used for free.

Don’t forget that the only reason altheletes now get scholarship was becasue they had corruption problems with the boosters big time. So the NCAA now is trying to act like 160K in scholarship is enough compensation when the schools now rake in hundreds of millions of dollars. The real how they compensate the players is not in my pay grade.

But to me they should make the NFL and the NBA have a viable minor league system like Baseball and hockey have, so that kids that don’t want to go to college but want to play in the leagues have a shot can develop their talents without having to pretend to be students.

by Late for Dinner on Aug 17, 2011 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

By even the most conservative estimates, schools would make a ton more cash with a playoff

Most schools actually lose money on bowl games.

If you are interested in this stuff, you should read ‘Death to the BCS’. It will blow your mind and make you wonder why in the world we don’t already have a playoff.

by ggggmen08 on Aug 17, 2011 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

scholorships

are a farce. Some college athletes have no business being in college. Some even have the education level of a grade schooler. Antonio Cromartie was only accepted into FSU because he is an athlete. His IQ is border line mentally retarded. A FSU counselor was fired because she opened her mouth about many athletes and the cheating scandal.

by GMen56-11 on Aug 17, 2011 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Never happen.

The second you say they’ll start paying football and basketball types, Gloria Allred will be all up in the NCAA’s @$$ with multiple press conferences defending other, less-important (I don’t believe any of them are less important) athletes.

by LightningCoach on Aug 17, 2011 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't doubt it one bit.

It would be a mess. I know those smaller sports don’t bring the money in and believe me I understand that’s how business works, but those kids put in just as much work. Some of them.

by LightningCoach on Aug 17, 2011 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

They ARE being compensated...

They’re getting degrees, some from Top-Tier Universities….FOR FREE!~

by LightningCoach on Aug 17, 2011 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Give me a break with that scholarship crap

Have you really looked at the demands a D1 program puts on these kids. They are althelets first and students second. Secondly the schools and NCAA are making hundreds of millions of dollars of the kids. Who says a lot of these kids are even intreseted in going to college. But if they want to play in the NFL or NBA they have to go to college.

The NHL and MLB have minor league systems that allows kids to become professionals without having to pretend to be students. You don’t hear about a lot of problems with Baseball and Hockey student altheletes do you.

by Late for Dinner on Aug 17, 2011 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

That's not my problem.

It makes me sick to think they’ll get paid even though some of these kids are IDIOTS! Even with college degrees some of them cannot speak English. You give ME a break with this oh boo hoo let’s pay them…BS.

by LightningCoach on Aug 17, 2011 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions

My point is stop justifying the explotation by saying they are getting degrees

Like it or not collge football and basketball produce revenues that rival pro sports. A lot of these kids are not students thus the degree and can’t speak English. However since the NCAA allows college football and basketball to be used as a minor league by the NFL and NBA the only choice the kids have to make it to the next level is to go to college. Untill they find away to compensate the players you are always going to have booster scandals because that’s is how college’s pay their players.

by Late for Dinner on Aug 17, 2011 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't condone the exploitation...

It’s life. That’s the way it works. I agree on the revenue creating sports. Don’t think anybody can argue that. I agree with the rest of it as well. I don’t doubt that most Universities turn a blind eye to this stuff in hopes they don’t get caught. I don’t think even the most heartfelt story would make me change my mind. Someday, I may. Just not today. I love watching them, I really do. Not much in this world like College football. I just don’t want any of the money I spend to go to these kids who will probably be making MILLIONS in a few years, just to go broke a few years later.

by LightningCoach on Aug 17, 2011 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

It is used a minor league

because its the easiest one… and cheapest. The athletes are getting paid. They get their food, rent, utilities, and degree for free. They are kids and want the disposable income to spend on stuff they dont need. Which schools will not supply.

Though a lot of times the kids dont know what they have gotten into.. A gift is a gift… How do you tell someone that has never had anything handed to them, that free drinks for such an awesome game is not to be tolerated?

The NHL has their “minor-league” system, but almost all prospects come up through Canadian Minor Leagues (OHL, QMJHL, WHL) etc etc etc. That AREN’T connected to the NHL.

It just so happens that football development is controlled by Universities. Perhaps a minor league should be created.

Fact is, they are enrolled as students, they do get scholarship money, tutors do their work for them, and when they graduate they get degrees. They are students.

Maybe if a situation was created where they weren’t students, then fine. But until then.

Did you read the report?

According to the booster, Rolle introduced himself, gave the booster his phone number and told him “I want in on all the action.” Sounds like a determined man.

Here’s a quote from the booster:

"When you’re talking about violations he was about as bad as it gets. For starters, I bought him a $7,500 Jacob the Jeweler watch from Buchwald Jewelers in the Seybold Building. I supplied cash, strip joints. …. Probably the most significant violation would be Michael Huyghue financed Antrel to the tune of about $40,000 in cash while he was at the University of Miami."

"The worst thing you can do, at least this is what my friends tell me, is to come after me," Calhoun said. "I'm usually better at coming out of the corner than I am up on the pedestal. I haven't been on many pedestals, by the way. I'm a natural underdog, I guess -- sometimes for no apparent reason. And if I can't be the underdog, I'll make myself the underdog, somehow or other."

right...

didn’t he agree to open some company with an agent and then bailed when he went pro?

I don't care

As long as he didn’t harm anyone, I don’t care.

It's about damn time. Why weren't they given opportunities before? Huh?!?!

Who the hell cares do you think these were the only guys that have done this. Nicks was around with the wrong doing at UNC that cost Butch Davis his job. Reggie Bush gave back his Heisman and a booster bought his mother a house. I’m sure TT was involved in some shady dealings at USC all of these guys were. Ohio State, come on, they have a higher cap # than the Bengals do hell I take 40K too if someone offered it to me and it was not a crime. These schools get what they’re asking for when they try and compete as big time football programs.

UPDATED DEPTH CHART

This was tweeted by John Clayton, so its probably legit. Real interesting….looks like Jacquain Williams makes the team….Spencer Paysinger, Mark Herzlich, Andre Brown won’t according to this

I'd be real surprised if Paysinger doesn't make it at this point

he’s playing with the first team on two separate occasions, that has to count for something.

I think Ingram goes and Herzlich stays

Paysinger will make it, he is the #2 wil backer right now so IDK what that means for Dilliard.

Peyton May Have The Wins!!
But Eli Will Have The Rings!!!

So who cares about a jailhouse snitch saying

college football players took money (less than 1%) of the revenue U of Miami made?

The only thing that I think is really jacked up is...

the “hit list” he set and bounties he offered to have people knocked out of games. That is inexcusable…

I'm sure everybody has said the same thing...

but this is pointless. They broke NCAA regulations, not laws, right? Who cares? Except for the NCAA, nobody cares. Good for them for getting something while getting taken advantage of by those rich, greedy bastards who run the NCAA.
