Comparing Tom Coughlin, Rex Ryan
SB Nation New York's Jeff Freier thinks Tom Coughlin and Rex Ryan each fit in perfectly with the history of the organizations they represent. I think he's right.

Rex
I would prefer Rex as my head coach. His players love him. I cant say the same about Tom

Who cares if they love him? I only care if they win for him. Jim Fassel’s players loved him. You want love, buy a dog.

I disagree. I can name at least a couple of examples in sports of teams that won with coaches who weren’t popular with their players.
It’s not about making people like you, it’s about making them believe that you can make them successful.
Jeff Hostetler HATED Parcells, and was ready to quit playing football on several occasions because of him……how do you think he felt about Billy Boy by the end of January 1991?

hated vs respect
a player can hate or dislike a player. It boils down to respect.
You don’t have to like someone to respect them.

Exactly
my point. IMO many Giants players don’t like or respect Tom. I don’t care what they say publicly. Read Strahan’s book. Was it a coincidence when Smith signed with the Eagles he thanked many including coaches but omitted TC? I don’t think so.
Smith didn't thank Eli either
does he hate him too?
Hey coughlin, heard there’s an opening in Cleveland. You should fit right in….. Loser!
I think Coach Coughlin should be fired! How come there are no locals in that line-up. Nothing to give the fans a name they know, nobody on that roster that went to Rutgers University, St Johns or any team from New York or New Jersey. And if the locals can’t get a shot on the franchise from the state they live in, why are we fans going to these games. To see some other state, and see our players play for foreign teams (other states) this is the first time in 20 years, the Giants don’t have any locals on their roster.

So basically your opinion is admittedly based on no facts or supporting evidence? In fact, you outright ignore evidence to the contrary when forming your opinion? Okay, thanks.

You have to go all the way back to the 90s or prior.
These are new times. These players are different now. They want to play where they can enjoy themselves. All of the teams who made the playoffs have coaches that their players love.
look at the Bucs
that team is nothing special to me. But their coach is so different from Tom Coughlin, and he gets the most out of them for being like that. You hear soo many players wanting to play for Rex Ryan. Have you ever heard anyone say that they want to play for TC? It’s mostly the opposite. Bart Scott said his team is ready to go to war for Rex. Who has said that about TC?
TC is a good coach, but he’s past his era. Maybe if this was the 80s or 90s he would’ve won 3 SBs. But now he’s just an old man; he’s unable to adapt with the times.
So his era ended just 4 years ago?

2007 SB
The Giants got hot at the right time. The driving force was the final game of the season. They had lots of incentive to beat the Patriots. Although, the lost they came out of the game with a ton of confidence. They knew they could play with anyone. That confidence carried over into the playoffs.
Tom gets too much credit for the SB. Tom didn’t do anything different that year. In fact if it wasn’t for a huge performance from Bradshaw vs the Bills we might have had another disappointing end to the season.
you can say that about any coach
do you know how many Packers fans wan McCarthy run out of town even despite the SB win? Be surprised, many think he’s a moron.
Every one player gets too much credit for the SB. Coughlin, Spags, Tyree, Eli, Bradshaw, whoever the hell you want to name. It was all of them, the team.
They got hot, sure. But every SB winner does. Its no excuse, its no reason to downplay it. It happens, every year.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
Coughlin changed
his demeanor and his approach towards the team in 2007. It’s well documented. And do you remember what sparked the team against the Patriots? It was Coughlin’s no-nonsense “we’re going to play to win and not hold anything back” stance that inspired his team to go out and hit the mighty Patriots in the mouth. Give credit where credit is due.

Rex

Do I need to remind you what Tom Coughlin did with inferior talent in 2007?

not sure they have inferior talent there, the caliber of the OL is the biggest reason a team will have success and theirs is very good.

giving Rex credit for what he has done in the past 2 years. But to do it, people don’t have to downplay the things TC has done.

Definitely Hav to Agree With Rex
I’m not gonna say the Jets hav inferior talent I believe both teams have their strong suits and weaknesses but I believe Rex has done a wayyyyy better job with his than TC (especially 09)! When you love being where u are and lover and respect ur coach its so much easier to perform w/o having to look over your shoulder after every play. There’s a level of comfortability that allows you to jus say “ok I’m just gonna go do my job”! TC jus reeks of un-approachability and its hard to play balls out for some1 like that. I think Rex would do wonders with our team especially having a Vet QB! Rex basically inherited the same team with a worse QB and got them to the playoffs when ManGenious couldn’t muster up a winnning season.! So my vote goes 2 Rex

Jets
have a better OL and TE. In other offense categories Giants are better. We’re far better in the most important category. QB.
On defense we have a better DL. They’re better at LB. Revers is far and away the best CB in the league. Overall I’d rate the DBs pretty equal.
Answer a simple question
have yoou tried to approach TC and been rebuffed by him? If not, I don’t see how you can comment on his approachability.

The SB ring
has been followed by 3 dismal seasons including how the 2008 season ended.
Giants fans need to stop living in the past. The 2007 SB was a lifetime ago. This team has been a huge disappointment the last 3 season. Each season started promising. Each ended terribly.
A lifetime ago?

Rex lucked out that the AFC was uber weak in 2009 and we were unlucky that the NFC was uber strong in 2010.

At the end of the day all Rex’s regular season and post season records are nice but if he does not win a SB nobody is going to remember to much other than they did not win. Rex Ryan is perhaps the most annoying person in sports, but there’s no denying his defensive mind and the charisma he has with his players. Has he won a superbowl? No. But it’s only been 2 years, and he’s already taken the jets to the afc championship game. Not winning a superbowl in your first 2 years as a coach doesn’t make you bad, TC didn’t even do that. On that note, I respect TC as a coach too, but I would love to have Rex on the Giants. He’s the type of person that you absolutely love if he’s on your team, completely despise if he’s not.

I rather be competitive every season.
I guess some people like what we’ve been going through the last 3 years; I for one don’t.

Why does everyone seem to think 2008 was the worse year ever? Are the Giants the first team ever to lose a home playoff game after being a top seeded team? NO!
And competitive is being in it till the end… which the Giants were last year.

Exactly
2008 was tough because of how well we started and how it spiraled quickly after Plax shot himself
2010 was tough because we had our shot and royally blew it against the Eagles
2009 was actually easier to stomach because we slowly lost our chance to do anything and it didn’t hit all at once as it had in previous years.
It feels much worse when you can point to one situation or play or game and say…that was what sunk us.

We were the best team in football until Plax shot himself
Die hard Giants fan since wide Right! I was 5...
I'm down wit JPP
Yea you know me
It does matter
To suggest it doesn’t matter is naive. Would you really want to watch an uncompetitive team winning 4 to 6 games. Or live through 2009 again. The 2nd half of the season was painful.
So if you don’t win the SB you’d prefer going 0-16 and getting the top pick.
Both are good coaches
Rex does it his way and is more of a players coach, Tom is Old School.

Old School for an old school organization.
Since 1960:
Old School Organization: 10 Division Titles, 4 NFC Championships, 3 SB wins
New School: 4 Division Titles, 1 SB win 42 years ago that the QB won’t let anyone forget.
I wouldn’t trade our coach, our history, our team, for anything, especially the Jets

We all know the Jets are the NFL's dog with Fleas
However I will say this about Rex, he has taken an organization that basicaly didn’t matter. (well to Jet fans they mattered) and turned them into a national story.

wow
If you want to rip on TC for the past few years of no playoffs… fine my me. If it happens again this year, I’m the first to say fire him.
But now guys won’t to dismiss and downplay his Super Bowl title… I’m lost at this point
To see some other state, and see our players play for foreign teams (other states) this is the first time in 20 years, the Giants don’t have any locals on their roster.

his late season record speaks for itself
under TC we’ve only had 1 winning record the last 4 weeks of the regular season. Do you honestly believe our SB win was in a large part due to TC? If so, please explain your reasons.
Never said a large part
considering this is a team sport and everything has to fall in to place and get hot at the right time.. a head coach should get credit for getting his team there, then winning it, right
The players should get the most credit. But comments like “along for the ride” can be given to any coach that won a SB.

2011
I have lots of confidence and high expectations this coming season. Regretfully, TC and others in the coaching staff are my only reasons for apprehension. Why TQ still has a job is beyond comprehension. TC fired Bill Sheridan after a dismal season. Yet, Quinn still has a job. The one area the Giants have failed miserably under Tom has been ST. We suck almost every year. But Tom keeps things status quo.

Noticing the lack of trolls
Even when Free mentioned the Eagles
Definition of Troll: Fan-boy who sees headline on SB Nation that says other team might be better than his and rushes to “debate” with fans of the other team.
I believe in being courteous, but don’t tailgate for a hated opponent on my lawn or I turn the sprinklers on.
Bleeding Blue since 1962
Both guys are good coaches
TC has accomplished more but Rex has done a nice job in only two years. They are opposites but it works for them.
Both teams have had talent. Giants have drafted pretty well and have had a few good FA’s the Jets have done a nice job.
If/When Rex has a down year that should be interesting to see how he responds. He’s shot out of the gates as a HC but sooner or later he’ll have a down year and that will be interesting
