Panthers 20, Giants 10: JPP Is Awesome, Giants' Offense Is Not

Rocky Bernard (95) of the New York Giants tackles Cam Newton (1) of the Carolina Panthers during their preseason game at Bank of America Stadium on August 13, 2011 in Charlotte, North Carolina. (Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)

Not a whole lot for New York Giants fans to get excited about Saturday night in a 20-10 loss to the Carolina Panthers in their preseason opener. Thankfully, this game didn't count for anything.

The Giants' offense couldn't get much of anything done. The punt coverage wasn't good. The kick and punt returns went nowhere. The tackling was, predictably, sloppy. There were, however, some things to feel good about.

Jason Pierre-Paul had four tackles and two sacks. Domenik Hixon (five catches, 86 yards) and Devin Thomas (three catches, 23 yards looked good at the receiver position. Chris Canty played well.

Scary moment for the Giants when Lawrence Tynes was run into after having a field goal blocked. Tynes was initially diagnosed with a thigh contusion.

The next Giants preseason game will be at New Meadowlands Stadium on Monday, Aug. 22. Pretty obvious the Giants have a lot of work to do between now and then.

Well the offense takes alot of timing

The defense looked sharp. First team seemed to be swarming towards the ball, lots of hurries and sacks.

Talk about killdrive

Where do I start? That 4-1 towards the end of the game and it was an easy rush play yet they go passing. We could have prolonged the drive and got a TD.

if your seriously worried about what Kevin is calling in the 4th quarter of the game with backups

then I dunno what to tell you. Eli was a little outta sync with Hakeem, and it was raining. I be more worried about the first team offense.

Easy rush play maybe

but they didn’t get a 3rd and 1 rushing earlier in the game with the 1st string. You guys get all crazy with the play calling and the “schemes”. It comes down to execution. The players have to make the plays no matter what you call.

Geez

Give the play-calling stuff a rest in the first preseason game, please. They do everything for a reason in the preseason, and a lot of it has nothing to do with trying to win the game. You think the Giants are trying 55-yard field goals in games that count?

I agree. He has “it” “It” isn’t something you can teach, and “it” isn’t something that you can quantify, “its” just there.

He might not be the most athletic, or the most talented, but he just has whatever “it” is that makes him good. Not many guys have “it”, but some do. Now if you combine “it” with talent and athleticism, thats what makes all-stars.

Maybe “it” is intelligence, vision, pride, work-ethic, luck, etc.. Not sure. but “it” exists and it really cant be quantified.

Herzlich and Goff are guys that have “it” as well, IMO.

Jets will play us hard but the Eagles game that we host, I want to see offense score at least 1 passing TD and 1 rushing TD. The defense score : pick 6, fumble recovery TD, Safety. Special teams I want to see: All field goals made then 1 punt return TD and 1 kick return TD and then we shut out Eagles. I know too much to ask but you know what I mean.

I won’t start pointing fingers (yet) but i see a continuation of many of the problems that we had last year. the defensive front line was great but the secondary is really starting to show thier true colors (Yes, I mean the first string D. secondary) scared to hit, non-wrapping tackles. Sigh.

Our preseason first team O always sucks. During the season we will finish in the top 10 like the 2 -3 past years.

Thank God we didnt turn it over!

For those of us who have played football during High School, College and coached at both levels now. I can assure you that you can tell when a center blows an assignment. A center has 3 assignments no matter the offense they are in 1. Head up 2. Man over top(LB) even if it’s a reach man over 3. Double with guard either play side or off side. Baas is a veteran so 1 week or 1 day there should never be a NG head up and he goes and doubles a guard and let’s the NG run right through which happened on 3 occasions. It is preseason but the same people who get on here and say it’s only preseason, they have only been together for a week, how are you going to call out Gilbride for play calling in week one say the same exact thing every week during the regular season and are ok with a non playoff year or say we will get them next year. Ill tell you how you call out Gilbride 1. The play gets to the QB waaaay tooo late which means they get to the line with 10 seconds normally not enough time, the def knows when you are snapping now 2. The same shotgun draw plays we have used the past 3 years that every fan and of course every other team knows what is coming 3. This offense is nothing more than a dink and dunk offense, with a QB that is afraid of being hit so he throws off his back foot all the time. If you have never put on a helmet or pads, gone through a 2 a day practice, thrown up while running down the field, seen stars after hitting helmet to helmet then you will never fully understand this game or how it is played with passion and enjoyed by the fans with passion so while yes it was preseason game #1but there were far too many mistakes for a team with so much experience. New England, Green Bay, Atlanta, Philly, may have had some issues but they played pretty well for game #1…the Giants didn’t other than Def. In the 1st qtr.so call them out don’t defend them all the time

Agreed way too much. Thats the problem.

It seems like to me any negative observation made on this site gets you labeled as a fake fan or an idiot.

You proved your knowledge. You know more about the position than Ed and proved it to him.

Bass struggled. If his struggling is going to be attributed to only having a week in practice, then his successes should only be attributed to his opponents having only one week in practice.

I’m sick of the blind optimism here.

Andre Brown with the Kwillie

he looked quick to me. He just made that one mistake on special teams.

Kudos to

even for a sixth rounder. He is proving me wrong. Wish I could say the same about Dilliard.

To see where they need to improve or where they missed assignments. Get better fundamentals on tackling and WRAPPING UP.

Any comments on Anvil or Marvin?

I’m so stupid I didn’t even realize the game was on NBC. Durrrrr

Anvil had a few ...nothing real noteworthy

I could only see Marvin in for a few snaps. He’s alot weaker than I thought….was getting blown back off the line against 3rd stringers…kinda disappointing

Nothing to worry about.

The first-team offense usually stinks in the first pre-season game, then gets methodically better as they go forward.

The defense looked solid, but not steallar. That is the Fewell defense. It’s prone to give up the occasional big play, but it can create a lot of turnovers.

Special teams, well, I have no comment.

There are plenty of kinks to work out, but this team is more than capable of winning 10+ games this year.

This is stuff we already know, but I just felt like posting it, since I’m stuck at work until 7.

Dillard did nothing much the hynocerus got blown up a couple times he didn’t blow anybody away like I hoped. While eli was playing it was raining like a mofo so throws were a little off. ST’s were terrible. Seemed like there was a lane on almost every return. Anvil made one nice stopand sash looked huge out there compared to other safeties. Cruz ran some nice routes but sage never saw them, he missed him one time where he was WIDE open on a blown coverage where he could have crawled in. All in all it was pretty pathetic but it is just preseason. And I will say it again JPP WAS A MONSTER!

Hey our defense scored!

We have not seen a lot of defensive TDs lately and this was a pleasant change to see and now if they could just do it in regular season too.

If you're wondering what jersey to get this year..

I think JPP put that question to rest. ST was awful, but did anyone think it would look good at this point? Maybe Quinn doesn’t have the guys in the right lanes but dammit they should be able to tackle. And Ross did a great job covering Armanti Edwards…I hope Prince heals fast.

I’m always negative, but there were positives to take from this game. If starters play the whole way we win easily. Tons of young talent on both sides of the ball, hope we can coach ’em up.

Witherspoon was very impressive to me...

and in my opinion he has earned Aaron Ross’ spot in the scheme. Ross stinks. Even 100% healthy he stinks. He plays like he’s afraid to make contact and like he doesn’t want to be out there. This Witherspoon kid ran stride for stride and was glued to receivers every time he was out there.
And for Pete’s sake, I can’t give Perry Fewel the benefit of the doubt anymore. He INSISTS on running that stupid soft Tampa 2 bullcrap and it DOESNT WORK. Our corners need to STAY WITH THEIR MAN down the field and stop releasing them to the safeties over the top. Perry: IT DOESNT WORK!! What’s the point of having 2 good cover corners in Webster and Amukamara IT THEY DONT COVER??

Picking up right where he left off

Even with the kick returns in theory less dangerous, Tom Quinn will cost us 80+ yards of field position per game.

by Spider Lockhart on Aug 14, 2011 8:49 AM EDT reply actions

return yardage

Carolina 3 kickoff returns 88 yards, 29.3 average. 5 punt returns 50 yards, 10 yard average
Giants 3 kickoff returns 57 yards 19 average 5 punt returns 27 yards 5.2 yard average
55 yards difference on returns in the first preseason game. Granted, a single data point is useless for drawing conclusions, but it does seem like the repeat of a pattern from last year. Over a 16 game season, 55 yards per game comes out to 880 yards, or more yards than Brandon Jacobs has run per year over the last two years.

by Spider Lockhart on Aug 14, 2011 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions

last years return yardage difference

705 yards more in returns for opponents than for us. 44 yards per game difference.

Here's what I see from the Giants

A talented team that is mentally soft, the bigger the moment in a game, the more mental errors made. Is it coaching? you can make a case for that, or maybe it’s just the culture around the organization. This team lacks a killer instinct, too many times they’ve had teams on the ropes, only to let em off and ultimately lose games. Now for Eli, I know we all love him cuz he won us a ring, but let’s just acknowledge Tuck should have been SB MVP. Eli, to me, has all the tools to be elite, but is not elite based on the mental lapses he has during games. And for all the talk about him not being helped out by receivers with tipped passes, maybe he needs to work on his accuracy so that receivers don’t have to fully extend for passes all the time. Yes the offense is predictable, we all know it, but unless they fire Coughlin, Gilbride is’nt going anywhere, but the question I have is, say we get a new OC, will Eli develop into what we want him to be? or would the team take a step back? only time will tell. All I know is this team continues to have an identity crisis on offense, are we a pass or run first team? and on defense in my opinion, we have the talent, but perhaps we are a bit soft.

by mrluck35 on Aug 14, 2011 10:37 AM EDT reply actions

I agree that we are definitely a mentally soft team.
