I will always cherish my time in NY and the super bowl victory.. This was obviously not an easy decision for me or something i ever expected but unfortunately the business aspect proved that the eagles wanted me to be part of their organization MUCH more than the Giants did.. A special thanks to my WR buddies, coach Gilbride, all of u amazing fans on here, and the entire giants organization for drafting me.. Time for a new beginning...

Makes me wonder why guys like smith, bradshaw, boss etc. weren’t offered deals b4 they hit the free agent market….why wait until they are free agents?

Hopefully they won’t do the same with nicks and ham

The 30% rule in effect prior to last year would have made it very tough to extend those guys.

i have nothing to say about whether i like or hate this right now. lets just say this f***in blows.

by GiantBeing on Aug 10, 2011 7:41 PM EDT reply actions

I seriously thought this was a joke.

I’ve been following Mike Garafolo’s tweets and I seriously thought he was joking.

Why would he go to the Eagles of all places? I honestly thought he was overrated by a lot of G-Fans, but why the Eagles? Why our biggest rivals?

Damn Steve, this really hurts.

by GoffAttack on Aug 10, 2011 7:42 PM EDT reply actions

He followed the Money

I really hope he didn’t target the one place that would hurt the most. I would like to think he has more class than that…. I wish him health and i hope he finds his way back in Blue next year, but as far as this year goes… that is all i can wish him

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.

by njsoldier1978 on Aug 10, 2011 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Money

It was all about the money… He got 1 yr, $4Mil of which $2Mil is guaranteed…. Thats alot for someone who won’t be playing until after week 6, and not even 100 percent. Also, the Giants most likely aren’t enough under the cap to offer him the type of contract he wanted…. I can’t believe he jumped ship to the enemy, but it just goes to show how money talks….

by nyfinest314 on Aug 10, 2011 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

The Giants

didnt feed his ego by giving him a long term deal…. he got a one year deal which is basically a try-out….. in my opinion

He's dead to me

Call it over the top, but I dont care… just spit in the face of the giants just cuz you are a greedy (expletive) and want 3 new cars instead of 2. Steve Smith, I hope Kenny Phillips has you on his radar. I can’t wait to see you cry in pain as they carry you off the field (that is if you even make it back on this year). Worthless punk

Something else is going on here

If the Giants thought he was going to be the same Steve Smith for even half a season, no way would this have happened.

Remember, it wasn’t just microfracture surgery he had. He lost a piece of bone up in the joint, and the cartilage along with it… which all had to be repaired. At the time I remember reading that this was a very rare and serious type of injury. I’ve certainly never heard of anybody having it (or coming back from it) before.

We've had our fair share of painful departures

And I can’t say that they were exactly like this one, but very similar. I CAN say, however, that I’ve never in my life seen such vitriol towards a guy for doing nothing wrong. Why do fans think that football players have the same allegiance as they do? it’s so ignorant.

Like Jason said, props to most of you guys. I’m sure a lot of the hatred towards S. Smith is multiplied by the attention the Eagles have been getting this offseason

to anyone with eyes and a working heart.

But also, as mentioned in another thread, the comments were important to post to use as a reminder of how not to act when something like this happens. I’m sure if something similar happened again, you would think twice about posting hate-filled rants after reading the comments (not that you did). I know I would.

Plus,

disgusting, racist, foul and awful

is an accurate description whether you are “appalled” by this or not.

the giants showed no loyalty to the guys they cut on the first day back from the lock-out. the salary cap requires difficult decisions based on money and risk.

its a simple case of risk> reward, and steve took a better deal. if steve signs a one year deal with the giants and gets cut due to injury and loses any hope of a roster spot, are you also calling the giants disloyal?

by cntrlalt on Aug 10, 2011 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont believe

That the eagles dont gain information from him, i do think he can add info to any game tap, things they dont know, a lot of things we are going to have to change, audibles and what not, it helps more then you know sir. I am ok with him going for the money but the going to the eagles thing is what makes him disloyal, giants are not disloyal they offered him a deal sorry we dont have eagle loot to hand out.

steve should take less out of the goodness of his heart, and show loyalty to a team that would cut his ass in a heartbeat if it benefited them?

It's not necessarily losing him that bothers me

I wasn’t expecting much out of him this year either way. Like I said on the ESPN NFC East thread, the Eagles essentially threw $2 million in a fireplace for a player that probably won’t be ready until midway through the season, and even then, he’ll be limited.

It’s the fact that he signed with Philadelphia. This is how I said I would feel if Plax went there. It’s not so much what he does or doesn’t do on the field…it’s that he signed with our most hated rival. It probably sounds petty, but oh well. Like Plax, I refuse to wish him well.

It hurts seeing him to go to the archrival. To me, far more than seeing Plax as a Jet (I just don’t hate the Jets, sorry, they’re like the goofy little brother than makes a lot of noise, eventually gets smacked in the mouth, and goes back into their corner, but are entertaining in the meantime). I’ll never root for Smith again and while I don’t wish further injury on him, I wouldn’t mind seeing him on the receiving end of some vicious, legal hits from the big blue D.

Is why he’d want to be in Philly long term? It’s not like they’d let him supplant DJ or Maclin, so he’s basically a #3 at best… He could easily start on at least a half dozen teams out there, some with potential to be good in a year or two (TB, I’m looking at you).

He's not big

he’s not fast, he has a bad habit of the dropsies when he’s wide open for a huge gain. Not trying to discredit his great seasons for us, but there are plenty of WR’s who have equal hands and route-running, and far more upside in size and speed. He had a great rapport with Eli, was a stud on 3rd down, but lacks the “wow” factor.

by Syler on Aug 10, 2011 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

From May 2010:

His stats notwithstanding I see Smith as a glorified slot WR. He’s great at getting first downs but he has a terrible YAC average. He doesn’t draw double teams unless it’s third down. He can’t outrun you. He can’t out-jump you. He can’t out-muscle you.
1. Nicks
2. Manningham
3. Smith
4. Barden

Plenty of WRs could do what Smith did for the Giants. Plenty. I have always felt that Giants fans overrated him.

Giants fans love to bring up his 107 receptions. He had his big year by default. He was the most experienced WR on a team that had lost both its #1 and #2 WRs. The run game was bad with injuries to the O-line, Hedgecock, and Jacobs. The defense was giving up a ridiculous amount of points and the Giants were always down, which means they had to pass to catch up.

LOL how quick they turn, do you hear your self, you say "His stats notwithstanding I see Smith as a glorified slot WR"

Then you go on to prove exactly whe he is not by saying;

“He doesn’t draw double teams unless it’s third down”

……..Is that not what they pay the big money for??

How quick? This was from May 2010

I didn’t just say this.

Let's get off the loony wagon, here

SS12 was a posession receiver who was marginalized by better outside targets last year, even before the injury. I loved the guy on our team as much as anybody, but let’s call a pig a pig, for sanity sake. His 100+ catches were as much a testament to the lack of other options as it was to his excellence. Excellent route runner, always where Eli thought he would be, but that wasn’t enough when Nicks and Manningham were making deeper catches and YAC. SS12 rarely got very far after getting his hands on the ball, mostly going to the ground.

The one exceptional thing he did was getting past the 1st down marker a good part of the time and that wasn’t the case last year. We’ll be fine. Stop yer crying. Nicks, Manningham, Cruz, Hixon, Jernigan and hey, heck, even Reynaud is having a great camp. Wanna bet that Bear becomes more than just a blocking TE? I’m taking odds.

Good points

What sticks out in my mind is his big drops when he did go long.

He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.

I didn't even have to mention the injury OR the drops last year to make my point.

Naw

ill take Gilbrides word, one of the best inside WR’s in the NFL. lets not dwn play his importance because if he stayed, no one would be talking like this, sound like a bunch of ex girlfriends lol, he was very very very good for us, but he moved on, no issues, someone else will have an oportunity but im not going to down play SS12.

Im with you on Bear and i see you got Cruz after Nicks and Ham

smart man, I think Bear is our TE….. he is the best at both and he is the size of a Giants TE, Beckum cannot be a traditional TE for a 3 hr game, he is best blocking from the slot and backfield.

Let's also not forget

SS12 wasn’t even the 1st WR drafted on his own college team. Then again, that may be more of a shot at all 32 GMs that year

they haven’t even given design jackson a new contract yet! This makes no business sense, it seems just like a pre-season victory lap.

A little reality

Steve Smith’s 2010 stats

REC YDS AVG LNG TD YAC FD ATT YDS AVG LNG TD FUM LST
2010 Regular Season 46 554 12.0 39 2 2.4 24 1 9 9.0 9 0 2 2

Just look at the YAC # and relax. Nicks and Manningham blow his YAC numbers away, in fact, both have more YAC in 1 year than SS12’s career.

JR obviously realized that SS12 isn’t healthy and asked him to go undercover and infiltrate the Eagles organization. That’s right — Steve Smith is a spy.

My sentiments exactly. One of the classiest guys on the team and definitely my favorite NYG WR of all time(I’m under 30). Hurts like hell to see him on the Eagles. But last I checked they don’t have a SB victory and we wouldnt have had our last one if not for some great 3rd down conversions by SS12. Best of luck to a classy guy. (when he isn’t playing big blue)

by poetryinmoten21 on Aug 10, 2011 9:31 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I'll miss SS12

Here’s the thing. I will miss him as much for the class act that he always was while he was here. Very gracious to fans and a great team guy. However, he may never be anywhere near what he once was because of the injury. Reese obviously doesn’t think he will. And I hate the Eagles as much as anyone but it’s business and SS has to treat himself as his own business and make it as profitable as possible. Who knows, maybe this 2MM guaranteed is the last $ he makes as a football player. I hoped there would be more class from the readers here but I understand I’m sour too. I’ll miss Steve, and I’ll route for Kenny Smith to blow his ass up(legally). Go Big Blue!

by poetryinmoten21 on Aug 10, 2011 9:28 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I can't get worked up about this

They guy had microfracture surgery in December. With DJ, Maclin and Avant (who Reid just called the best slot receiver in the NFL), it will take injuries for him to even see a marginal role, and besides, he’s not playing until week 6 at the earliest.

If Reese thought they couldn’t live without him, they’d sign him. But Week 1 will come and the offense will do just fine. Then weeks 2-6, and not a word from Steve Smith. Then Week 7 and he still might not be active. I think this will be a pretty nothing signing.

HE’S INJURED. Thanks for the help in 42. Good luck with the knee.
