2011 NFL Free Agency: David Carr Back To Giants

David Carr, backup quarterback for the New York Giants in 2008 and 2009, tweeted just moments ago that he will be returning to the team.

NY, round 2, can't wait to get back, Great Staff, Great Players, Best Fans in the game...and what an amazing city. 2much 2 pass up

Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger tweeted that this does not necessarily mean that current backup Sage Rosenfels is out of a job. Potentially, that would indicate the Giants might keep three active quarterbacks -- something they have not done the past couple of seasons.

Carr left the Giants as a free agent prior to last season, hoping to find a team where he would have an opportunity to start. He went to the San Francisco 49ers, but that did not work out well for the nine-year veteran. He played in just one game, completing five-of 13 passes.

In his two seasons with the Giants Carr played in nine games, completing 30-of-45 passes with three touchdowns.

keeping 3 QBs

would seem like an odd allocation of resources when $$ is tight. I would think Sage is out of a job.

Don't write of Sage yet...

I'm pretty sure if Eli goes down our season is done ...

whether it’s Sage or Carr.

Keep the cheaper one, and use the other roster spot for depth elsewhere.

I’d be a bit surprised though if Sage is the one to go, as it would make that trade with the Vikes last year look absolutely putrid.

unless they package him with Osi

for a deal worthwhile.

You never know.

First thing I thought of, right or wrong, when I saw the Carr signing was it could be prep for some other dealing.

I'd be cool with packing Sage for something else.

I don’t even know what we’ve got with him. With Carr, I’m pretty sure he could hold the fort for a game or two, but if Eli is really down, we’re sunk.

I was thinking the same thing.

I would think they keep Carr and release Sage, which would save around 1.5 to 2 mil in cap space I’m guessing.

Don’t see them keeping both Carr and Sage.

One of these days we'll come on here and see a signing of some signifigance.

Hopefully. It’s hasn’t been a bad signing period, but it sure hasn’t been a great one. Seems like the teams that were good last year have been getting better…except the Giants.

by LightningCoach on Jul 31, 2011 5:14 PM EDT reply actions

the Giants big glaring hole on the team was Center

they signed a Center right away. There was nothing else on the market that was an upgrade that they needed to go out of their way to get.

I’m not sure what people are looking for, but signing a veteran C was the goal of this offseason. They did it, so the offseason can’t be considered anything other then a success. Who cares what everyone else is doing. You try to copy other teams, that’s how you end up being a POS team.

If we all put on blinders and saw only what our team has done, we’d all be pretty F’n happy. They replaced Ohara. They got the FB that many of us thought we should have drafted. They brought in Herzlich. All moves that I like.

I don’t give 2 s***s about what Philly does. Until we see them on the field.

They stressed Contniuity throughout the early part of the offseason, keep the team stable in order to move forward, and they’ve stuck to thier guns on this one so far. Only things left to do are Bradshaw, and Smith (Boss is expendable now that they can slide Pascoe back to TE) So here’s hoping they get those moves done.

You down wit JPP?

by Flynner on Jul 31, 2011 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Amen to that

It seems as if everyone is just writing off the season b/c oif what the shegulls did. Really guys? If that’s the case, y should we even watch the games? Our team was good last year. 10-6 & led the league with 35 turnovers. That’s really the biggest thing we needed to correct. We’re gonna be good again this year & I venture to say that we won’t lose both games to the shegulls.

They’ll be tough, but if anyone knows what it’s like to knock off a supposed unbeatable team, it would be us Giants.

by 1giantlion on Jul 31, 2011 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Packers, Saints, Colts, Bucs?

Really, the most active teams have been the Eagles, Patriots, Panthers, and Seahawks. Sure other teams made some moves, but those were the main teams. The Eagles and Pats did get better probably, but again how those teams are gonna gel together (i don’t worry about the Pats, but the eagles on the other hand) remains to be seen.

After those first 2 days of ridiculous contracts, the market has come back to Earth and everyone is being smart. Tulloch gets a 1-year deal. Edwards goes for $30 million.

If Bradshaw thinks he’s going to get a big deal, then he’s going to be waiting for a long time.

Surprised the Jets chose to go to Plax rather than to bring him back. Especially after giving up picks to get him.

Pat Traina tweet (that Ed retweeted)

“Is it me or is anyone else starting to get the feeling the Giants are going into a transition mode?”

I can see this. Eli, Tuck and Antrel still has some time left on their careers so maybe they’re trying to build a better team around the young talent we’ve got. Not saying we’re entering a full fledged rebuilding, but maybe JR sees us as 2-3 years away from a SB? Don’t all jump down my throat, but it is something I’ve been thinking about.

by GiantNomad on Jul 31, 2011 7:46 PM EDT reply actions

your not totally wrong

transition mode is different from rebuilding. Teams like the Rams have been rebuilding for a few years and last year showed it has payed off alot.
The Pats over the past few years have been transitioning their team. Gone are all the vet LBs and Secondary that won them 3 SBs. They have replaced them though the draft and a few FAs the last few years but still have been a playoff team that wins 10+ games a year. Theres nothing to say the Giants can’t do something like that… get younger while still competeing

I've thought they were rebuilding since 2008

6 new guys on defense, 5 new guys on offense

Basically half the team

by trueblue63 on Jul 31, 2011 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Not at all.

Last two years were more transition years. The OL is probably the only unit in transition, but to me it appears solidified. I’d say from 2009, these next few years are the 2-3 year plan.

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

I'm thinking that many teams go 5-11, 6-10 when changing out half of their starters in 3 years

Giant fans are just spoiled, and at the same time frustrated at the past two years shortcomings

by trueblue63 on Jul 31, 2011 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

teams can replace a lot of starters

and still compete (i.e. Pats). 2003 and 2004 were rebuilding times for the Giants (new young QB, new coaching staff, core players in the draft, etc). We need half a season to tell if they will do stuff like this

I doubt JR thinks this way

He goes out, gets the most out of the draft, straight BPA.
Looks at his cap, looks at his roster who’s locked up, who’s free, does an objective assessment of our team.Takes the big picture into account while working the FA market..no desperation, and fills holes cognizant of the $ he will need to re-sign who next year.
Sorry Pat Traina but, ehh. This is the 2nd time today I’ve found your analysis lacking.

Smith's recovery

This shouldn’t surprise anyone.

Rotoworld:

Giants players are reportedly under the impression that Steve Smith will miss (microfracture surgery) “at least” the first month of the season.
GM Jerry Reese conceded that Smith was unlikely to be ready by early September. This news lends more credence to the belief that he could be headed for the PUP list to start the season. Smith is tentatively expected to re-sign on a one-year contract. We recommend targeting breakout candidate Mario Manningham as a high upside WR3.

by GhostDini on Jul 31, 2011 7:54 PM EDT reply actions

Been saying it

all along to those that are trumpeting Smith as unstoppable. He’s going to have a long way coming back, which is why I keep talking about Miller. They need THREE guys who can catch the ball well and threaten. Barden is going to be on PUP as well. Beckum can’t block, it’s obvious it’s a pass play when he’s out there. Miller is the answer. Boss has way too many downsides to offer him a big contract. I have to agree with Pat on this. It really appears that the Giants are content to sit back and not really do what they have to in order to seriously contend. I think they are using Coughlin to ease into this transition, and he’s been told to start playing the young guys. Hence no real FA signings designed to immediately help the team. I could easily be wrong, but that’s what it appears to be. If a team that won the NFC East had beaten my six straight, and I was serious about contending, I wouldn’t have brought in a punter and a replacement center when there were some legitimate guys who could have helped.

by nygmen123 on Jul 31, 2011 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

if u already know the team is not going to contend

why even watch this season?
And Smith being on the PUP is not the end of the world, non of us no how he has healed or is rehabing

sorry nyg123 but I don't get where you or Traina are coming from.

What transition is this? The man knows value,he doesn’t operate under desperation, needs,Phucking Philadelphia, none of this. He’s operates each part of the off-season with an eye on long-term success and present needs.
I don’t get the transition thing at all.No one tells TC who to play,at all.We don’t have alot of capspace this year and when we cut guys to make room we looked first at re-signing our own guys for what they are worth. If thats not mutual he will find another way.
What was out there that we could afford?Nothing but what we got a starting C.
You actually even sound scared of Philly.
And are staking your views in football to that of a sheila.Good luck.

Sage

Does everyone forget how well Sage held kicks for Tynes after Dodge failed at that? Does anyone remember NOT hearing anything bad about the FG & PAT after Sage took over holding duties?
Hey, I thought Carr was a pretty decent back-up, but Sage brings so much more to the table. When he was with the Texans and Schaub got hurt, he actually stepped in and did really well. Then he went to Minnesota with the intention of being the starting QB, but before he could even sniff the field the Favre-saga began and he got lost in the wash.
I vote for Sage over Carr!

It’s a rule change, you get an extra roster spot for the third QB, no third QB, no extra active player

can Jerrel Jernigan be considered a 3rd QB?

Me thinks Rosenfels or Carr won’t take the role of 3rd QB on a team whose first QB never gets injured.
Plus I don’t think it would be smart to spend much $$ on backup QBs.
