Linebacker Situation

OK guys everyone knows the Giants don't exactly have the greatest linebacking core in the league, but with that said I don't think the group we have is terrible.  It is still a position I believe we need to address though, it seems that Boley, Goff, and Sintim will see the field more often than most, with hopefully guys like Jones and Herzlich (or maybe even Dillard and Tracy) fighting their way through for playing time.  I think we really need to add a veteran to sure this group up and there are not many top flight guys available.  So the question I impose is what do you guys think we should do or who should we go after?

My belief is we have to make a hard push at Channing Crowder he was released yesterday and is only 27 years old, I know this guy doesn't always say the right things, but you can't argue he's probably the most talented linebacker on the market at his age.  I personally think this is a no brainer if we get him for the right price.

No Channing Crowder is a horrible human being

not a horrible football player, i don’t personally like the guy, but your crazy if you don’t think he’d make our linebacking unit better

Can we all collectively bargain not to be douche bags ?

yea, he's a bad person too

but I must be crazy I guess. I’ve seen plenty of Crowder and I know for a fact he is a horrible player.

Just cuz he doesn’t play for the Giants, but plays LB, doesn’t mean he’ll make the LB unit better. Just cuz the grass appears greener, doesn’t mean it is. Crowder sucks at football, he really does.

He's not horrible

Strong run defender but weak in coverage. No better or worse than what we have now so signing him wouldn’t help. I’d like to see the guys we have battle it out in camp.

Clam chowder

If the price is somewhat reasonable and there are absolutely NO better options i wouldn’t be opposed to this signing. I’d just as much like to see Herzlich and Jones and the other LB from UCF to get a shot.

Listen

I know he’s not a great football player and he has some obvious character flaws, but in the same light he’s really not a bad football player either. He’s probably better than most of the linebackers on our team. I’d love to see Jones and Herzlich play as well, but it’s a 16 game season a Linebacker(s) is destined to get hurt and we don’t have a strong unit to begin with. Crowder is a veteran and would undoubtedly help out at the right price.

he's not an upgrade

he’s no better then Chase Blackburn. The guy looks like a tortoise, yet he only has to play the middle in a 3-4 and he gets burnt all the time. The Dolphins are probably the last team in the NFL that should be losing LBs, yet they have no interest in bringing back Chowder.

I dunno about you, but that says everything. He’s just a name that plays for another team.

My Opinion

is that we have everyone we need at LB. Perhaps sign a verteran for insurance, like we did last year with Bulluck. However, if there’s one area where we need to give the young guys a chance, it’s at LB. Create open competition, and see who comes out on top.
Don’t forget too, that Kiwi resigned. He can sub in and out at LB, Sintim (one would hope) can finally stay on the field and show why he was selected in the second. Boley is worth a spot, Goff is worth a spot, and we have a handful of mid-rounders who we still don’t know what we may get out of.
Oh, and throw in the fact that Fewell likes to use 3 safeties and I really find it hard to see why we would allocate resources to this position.

To suggest we don't need improvement at LB is lunacy

It’s been a piss poor position for us for YEARS.

Has it not?

or do the Giants fans here see something in Sintim, Goff, whoever that nobody else sees?

I dunno about years

I’ve always said an improvement is possible, but I guess what others think of as a true improvement is in the eye of the beholder.

We had good Lbaneezers a few years ago, we went to the SB. Pierce and Mitchell got old and expensive/fat, and went away. Goff and Kehl seemed to be injured more often then not so its been tough.

I’d much rather see if the LBs on the team have what it takes if their healthy, instead of going insane given the face they’ve always been injured instead of bad. If they’re healthy this year, we’ll see.

its just that a true, actually relevant improvement hasn't presented itself

I mean people act like Boley doesn’t exist….that was what all the LBaneezr or Die cultists are asking for. Boley was it. He has ended up, well…just average I’d say.

There’s obviously something with the system that make LBs either nonexistent, or that they’re easily exposed, I dunno. But the team ahs tried to solve the position and I think its ended up just OK. Not Pro Bowlers or anything, but its fine. In a 4-3 D like we have, unless someone racks up a bunch of INTs or sacks, they’re not going to make the back pages of the paper all that much, and that’s how you get recognized apparently.

Its really much about nothing. Those that are here are fine. Those that are FAs aren’t going to be any better, THe one single one I can see being an upgrade is Stephen Tulloch and I dunno what goes on with him.

We have 12 LBs in camp

Or something like that. All fighting for a job. Adding a 13th does not get you that much.

Most of the LBs that are free agents right now are in that situation because they are unwanted. Ask their team’s fans about them, you will get the same response we make to Bernard and Hedgecock leaving. TB fans can’t wait to see Ruud gone. How much did Bulluck give us last year?

So I’d rather focus on the important issues. Like RB and TE.

Phillip Dillard

I like the guy. I mean, he not only spells Phillip with 2 L’s like I do, but I honestly believe he can develop into a solid LB piece. Clint Sintim was one of my favorite players coming out of college and might finally be able to show his skills this year. Goff is not exactly chopped liver, and like previously stated, Michael Boley is still around, and not ALL that bad either.

Let's Go Knicks, NY Giants, NY Mets & NY Rangers.
