2011 NFL Free Agency: Nnamdi Asomugha Lands With The Philadelphia Eagles

This is the nightmare scenario for New York Giants fans. Nnamdi Asomugha has landed in the one place that likely hurts Giants fans -- and their Super Bowl aspirations -- more than the Dallas Cowboys or New York Jets. With the NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles.

The deal is reportedly worth $60 million over five years, with $25 million guaranteed. And yes, Eagles fans are in a celebratory mood over at Bleeding Green Nation. To be honest, how can anyone blame them?

Along with Darrelle Revis of the Jets, Asomugha is one of the two best cornerbacks in the league. With Asomugha on board, you have to wonder if Philadelphia will keep both Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie, just acquired in the Kevin Kolb trade, and veteran Giants nemesis Asante Samuel.

No matter what they ultimately decide to do with that surplus, this is a stunning move. And I have to agree with BGN's JasonB, who wrote "Good luck to anyone that tries to throw a pass against this defense next year."

Your thoughts, Giants fans! And do your best to keep 'em clean

Not against our receivers...

If we through Hakeem at them, Manningham, maybe Steve Smith, hopefully Plax… then its just an even match.

At the same time, look at their linebackers. Who?

Why won't god let us beat the Eagles?

by lilgiantadam on Jul 29, 2011 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Vick Has Never Played a Full Season

He still needs to stay healthy. They have marginal depth at RB. Their OL is average and their front 7 on defense is nothing to be scared of. The recipe to beat the eagles this year is going to be go big, get 1 on 1 with your pass catching TE and hammer them with the run. (This keeps the offense off the field too.) Philly is thinking about getting ahead and making you play catchup. If we resign boss we have 2 pass catching TE’s and can go double TE and neutralize their CB’s.

Also I don’t want to hear about how the Eagles always best us until they win 4 Super Bowls in my lifetime.

by Madhops on Jul 30, 2011 9:14 AM EDT up reply actions

This one hurts

they either have DRC for the SLOT CB spot… or they trade Samuels and get stronger in the drfat for next year. Either scenario is just not good.

So, if plugging him in makes a huge difference (and I think it will)… I am feeling pretty sure the Eagles can take this division. Hell, anything short of a trip to the SB for them this year would have to be a huge disappointment now, given what they have garnered together without giving up anything too major.

AS Long as Eli

Doesn’t hit asante in the #‘s he can be had. Yeaj he makes great ints but he’s soft and once u catch it u can take it to the house on em. But I think we def need Plax now, b/c if they keep all 3 we gotta be able to throw the sink @ em and I know Plax aint scared of no CB. + in hindsight they only hav DRC for 1 year so its not that Bad

by AHoustonGiant on Jul 29, 2011 7:38 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

The problem is Gilbride.

Asanti knows our plays as well as our players do. He has 4 years of unimaginative tape to watch on our offense and he is really good at jumping routes.

Logic would dictate that they will entertain offers for Asanti, to try and get younger at the CB spot with DRC and draft picks. But the Eagles know how to manage their cap. It would not surprise me to see all 3 play for them this year.

Definitly not good news but

their D-Line and pass rush is still okay even with Babin and their LB Corps is terrible so they can be run on. On top of that what’s the O-line going to look like. Any time you get the CB like that you definitly have improved so hat’s off on that move Eagle fans should be celibrating.

I think they have a pretty good Dline

Mike Patterson & Dixon are solid up the middle and Cole & Babin , well lets just hope hes a 1 hit wonder.

HOWEVER, there’s still a lot of work that they need to do to be an elite defense. d-line (aside from cole), safeties, LBz…don’t lose hope – I still think we have the better D right now.

Too Bad hthey ave Vick at QB

I say this with certainty…. No team will win a championship with Mike Vick at QB because Vick will never be healthy enough. If the Eagles had kept Kolb then I would say they had it right and could do it. But not now, especially with VY in reserve.
All teams in the NFL know that the deal with Vick is to put wear and tear on him. How many games will he miss next year? How long before he limps off the field.

Sure, it makes them a contender, but I don’t consider them a team with a real shot. Vick will miss enough games to sink them.

Don’t fret, their Dline and backers aren’t great, they can still be exposed.

First answer me this

Who on the market would have made the Giants a significantly better team?

This years free agency was full of CB’s (not needed), WR’s (not needed), and thats about it.

So basically you want us to sign players we don’t need, like Nnamdi, instead of signing our own players like RB’s (Ahmad Bradshaw) TE’s (Kevin Boss) DE’s (Kiwi and hopefully Osi situation gets taken care of)

If we don’t take care of our own first, we’re a worse team than last year clearly

by Pinke on Jul 29, 2011 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree that we didn't need

A top WR. Boss over Miller? Please. There were LB’s to be had. We signed the same guys who have missed the playoffs two years in a row, period.

by nygmen123 on Jul 29, 2011 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions

What receiver out there is better than Nicks...Manningham....Smith?

Only one was Holmes and he wasn’t leaving the Jets no matter what you say. Miller was the Raiders top priority so they would have out bid us period. And there are still LB’s to be had, but I don’t want Reese to go that direction, like you said he tried the FA market before and it didn’t work out to good (but not as bad as your implying), I want our young LB’s to get a legitimate shot at playing but Coughlin doesn’t agree.

This isn't good news at all.

Such a player, if not signed by us, will be a thorn in our side, when signed by a rival. And true, a lot of teams are worried about single player contracts, but a series of single player contracts adds up to a team.
The games still have to be played. And while you can spin it any way you’d like – this signing is not a good development for our team. I’d much rather have him playing for us than playing against us.

Quit playing not to lose. Start playing to WIN! Geeez...

Falling Behind

The thing that strikes me is that as the Eagles are getting better we are getting worse. Eagles picked up 2 All Pro CBs and an All Pro DL. We cut 3 OL (2 starters), haven’t re-signed Bradshaw, Boss or Smith. We’ve replaced 1 OL. Reese hasn’t even made time to speak with Osi. Seriously what is he so busy doing? Doesn’t take very much time to cut players and then sign no one. At best it looks like our team will have lost veterans and not replaced most of them. And we wasted draft picks too. How many WRs do we need in camp? Jernigan was a huge waste of a pick. At best he’s our 4th or 5th WR. So we’ll just cut another WR who would have been just fine riding the pine. Eagles are running a well organized plan and it looks like Reese is lost right now. We are just cutting players and then adding no one.

So when Vick gets his longterm deal , Desean Jackson wants his long term deal , and Shady McCoy , Maclin and Rogers-Cromartie want their money good luck selling them on this idea that they should play out their contracts.

Short term hey they’ve gotta be the Favorites to win it all but long term they just tied up 10 pct of their total budget on a 30 year old CB who’ll probably be playing safety in 3 years.

After Vick's deal is done at 13 mill a year

That would leave the Eagles at 12 Mill under the cap. more than enough to sign Jackson to 4 year extension with 12 to 13 mill Guaranteed and 6-8 mill a year. After cutting 2 CB’s, a DE, and another player or 2 it will lower the cap number to about 8 mill. More than enough to sign a Tulloch or someone lesser at MLB before the season starts.

I, for one

am not devastated by this. Looking at last year we’re just a few dumb@ss mistakes away from going what……13-3, 14-2. Yes the iggles beat us twice but in the second game up until our 4th quarter implosion we were not just winning we were dominating. I don’t see picking up one guy changing things that much. Everyone keeps saying that we haven’t gotten better but if we can eliminate some mental mistakes we don’t really have to. Plus this trade takes all the attention off the G-men and we all know that we play our best when we are underdogs.

Wow

it’s almost like the Packers play a 3-4, which is predicated on the LBers over the Dline, and we play a 4-3 which is completely flipped. Look at it the other way, B.J. Raji is the ONLY Dlineman they have that could possibly play for us, although he is built to be a strict NT.

I really don’t care. The Eagles CBs always played like Nnamdi Asomugha against the Giants, so actually having him there doesn’t really make me care any more.

The Eagles would have to do a whole lot more then sign one CB in order for me to actually fear them and think the Giants can’t beat them. For starters, they’d have to fire Andy Reid and hire a coach that actually realizes that 350lbs lineman across the line means you can beat every team by running the ball a lot

The Eagles LBs and safeties still suck

I mean that team has LBaneezer problems, no Giant fan has the right to complain about LB problems with the trash they have there. They still don’t have a great pass rush outside of Cole (Babin is a one year wonder..plus he’s not a LDE)

It’ll be tough to beat them, but either team that wins those games have won a big time battle. The Eagles won 6 in a row sure, but those seemed to all be 50/50 contests, either team wins and the loser could make a good case of they should’ve won.

Asomugha was a great signing. They’re still too young of a team with entirely too much turnover to be a SB team. Next year? Maybe.

cut Boley. Or restructure him. We have an awful lot of young linebackers who can’t seem to get on the field. Restructure Canty. Definitely restructure Webster. What have these three done to earn those contracts other than our GM being foolish enough to offer them? Come on guys, THIS is one reason we have no CAP ROOM! Webster to earn 4 mil less than Nnamdi? Come on. He’s decent to good, but come on.

Let's make a splash for once

Sign: moss, plax. Drop Steve smith(he’s a stat stuffer)
Sign: ruud and Cody Then maybe we won’t get run over
Sign: Matt light. He’s used to “winning!” duhhh
Sign: Ricky Williams Let Bradshaw go, he’s good but we don’t win sb’s w/ small rb’s that fumble, plus Ricky has relatively low miles
Osi can kick rocks as far as I’m concerned, he has lost a step, and he is a potential cancer trade him for a CLUTCH TE, boss is not who we thought he was.

None of those posts

contain logical rationale. Full props for being off the wall and thinking outside the box though.

Monumental

Make no mistake: This is the equivalent to when the Raiders signed Mike Haynes and when the Niners and then Cowboys signed Deion Sanders.

And I still would have preferred the Giants cutting C. Webster and spending the extra 3.5-4 million to sign Asomugha.

Christ people..

it’s only one guy. Apparently some of you are forgetting that Hakeem Nicks is our #1 WR and how nasty he is. Or that Manningham is like a Plaxico-Lite with his size and ability to stretch the field. Then you throw in the underneath stuff to Boss, Smith when he comes back, maybe Plax, and AB and Philly is no worry for us. Nnamdi is amazing without a doubt. But he can’t help their front 7. Their DL is weak and their LB’s are awful. Then you throw in how bad their OL is and Vick is gonna be getting pressured all day. And we know how he crumbles under pressure. Add in the D-Jax drama and Philly isn’t some new age juggernaut.
