New York Giants Roster Cuts: Madison Hedgecock Among Those Released
The New York Giants officially announced their roster moves this evening, and one name that had not been mentioned as a probable cut was on the list of players let go. Fullback Madison Hedgecock, all but forgotten about after injuries limited him to just four games a season ago, was one of five players from the active roster released by the Giants.
As had been widely reported earlier in the week the Giants also officially announced that center Shaun O'Hara, guard Rich Seubert and offensive lineman Shawn Andrews.
The Giants also officially parted ways with Tiki Barber, releasing the former Giant who is trying to make a comeback from the reserve/retired list. Barber retired from football following the 2006 season.
Parting with Seubert and O'Hara -- who played in a combined 215 regular season and postseason games for the Giants and were part of the Super Bowl-winning team -- is particularly difficult.
"Rich and Shaun have been two great New York Giants," said General Manager Jerry Reese. "Both of them are good people, hard workers and have been warriors on game day."
Coach Tom Coughlin was particularly emotional about letting the two veteran linemen go.
"I love those two guys," Coughlin said. "Both will go down in Giants history. They are two unique, highly competitive personalities who were superior in the locker room. Rich has the ability to stir it up, and Shaun has a great ability to counter Rich. They are great friends, but there have been times when they got going, that it nearly ended up in a fight. They are two men with unique and different abilities, but as an offensive line, you have to operate as one, and these two guys are the most competitive, tough and efficient players as I have ever had the honor and privilege to coach. They both will be missed around here."
Andrews played in 13 games for the Giants last season.
Undrafted Free Agents Signings
The Giants also officially announced the signings of 10 undrafted free agents. Here is the list:
- Mark Herzlich, LB, Boston College
- Justin Trattou, DE, Florida
- Craig Marshall, DE, South Florida
- Martin Parker, DT, Richmond (profile)
- Ibrahim Abdulai, DT, Arkansas-Pine Bluff
- Jerrard Tarrant, S, Georgia Tech
- David Sims, S, Iowa State
- Spencer Paysinger, LB, Oregon (profile)
- Jarriel King, OT, South Carolina (profile)
- Henry Hynoski, FB, Pittsburgh

is it bad that i had no idea of that stat….i watched every game….even the early game against the Titans when i was wasted by 3 due to extremely poor play….yet i still had no idea Andrews played that many games for us.

YESSSS!!!! first trade rumors on Osi
Citing a league source, the Baltimore Sun reports that the Ravens have shown “preliminary interest” in disgruntled DE Osi Umenyiora.
Baltimore’s sack numbers last year weren’t up to par, and Umenyiora could form a dynamite duo with Terrell Suggs after the Ravens passed on pass rushers until late in the draft. The level of compensation may be hefty, however, even after the Giants re-upped with Mathias Kiwanuka on Thursday. Previous speculation has New York targeting, at the very least, a second-round pick.
How much is Ray Rice making? :)
You mean to tell me there isn't ONE photoshopped image of Optimus Prime with a New York Giants logo?? RIDICULOUS!!
I love
“at the very least”
I’d take a 2nd and a 4th. Then I’d parlay that into trading up next year for Vontaze Burfict.
Just a nasty nasty
inside linebacker from ASU.
Think Ray Lewis anger combined with Patrick Willis athleticism.

I think he gets the process
If he really wants to get paid, he has to do the right things.
i assume "at least a 2nd"
means hopefully a 1rst. Sometimes on these draft pick deals they make it so if the pick is worse than say the 15th pick of the 2nd round, it’ll be a 1rst rounder, etc…. to cover themselves.
or it can be a 2nd w/ a provision that its a 1rst if he gets 10 sacks, etc
I'm saying floor on Osi in at late 2nd rounder
Let’s see where this goes, Pats getting Albert says other AFC teams better get better
And NFC is getting more pass happy
Cards might offer Kolb and say it’s like a 1 and a 2

I thought Osi's contract demands
might’ve made him hard to trade but now I think it’s a non-issue. So many teams need to spend money because of the salary cap floor. Signing a guy off of an 11.5-sack season might not be a problem.
The new CBA might actually help the Giants.

I feel sort of bad for O'hara, Seubert and Hedgecock
It makes complete sense what the Giants are doing, and I was worried about O’Hara and Seubert being any kind of healthy anyway… but still, after the lockout they finally get to come back to work and get blindsided. Thats too bad.
Hedgecock with the news about his health problem… I posted a couple times months ago questioning why they wouldn’t bring him back at least to have a shot at coming back from injury. I guess there’s the thing they knew that none of us did. He was only good for a short period but when he was, he was really really good.

it makes plenty of sense
when you have 3 great DEs and a fourth asking for top 5 money when your up against the cap
who are you overrating?
’cause last time I looked we had Tuck who qualifies as great.
A second year potential, potential, potential, potential…..
And Kiwi, with question marks surrounding his durability.
I stand by my statement, for a pass rushing team it makes no sense to trade a great pass rusher.
You down wit JPP?
kiwi had a great start to last season before the freak injury… i see him as equal injury risk as Osi.
and btw, all 3 of those guys are younger than Osi. Signing him to a long term deal w/ top-5 money makes “no sense”. He’ll be good for 1 or 2 years and bad a sink hole after that… let someone else pay it.
and only 2 DE’s play at a time… I don’t buy into the philosophy that you need 4 or 5 top tier guys… we have plenty and a 1rst rounder is WAY more valuable than Osi because of the youth, price, and flexibility
so 2 of the 4 are injury concerns
my point is I like depth on both lines, O and D. with Osi they’re set.
You don’t give him top 5 dollars but you can give him a bump enough to make him play the next few years in blue.
I hear what you’re saying about the 1st round value, especially with the new rookie wage scale, but the draft is far from an exact science, and I think they have enough on this team to make a run at it this season. So I don’t see why they would give up a valuable piece now.
You down wit JPP?
no doubt about that
finally something we can agree on!
If we could get Barber with a no talking clause in his contract,
I’d jump on that in a heart beat. Although, he may have to agree to a vocal-cord-ectomy.
Don’t forget what Tiki did in 2005 and 2006, and all the previous years when he was the Giants offense.
His third down abilities alone would be worth the cost of his contract…
he was phenomenal
but that was 5 years ago… u think he’s still at that level? rbs typically have a short shelf life
I think there's a lot to be said for healing time...
And the motivation brought on by alimony and child support payments.
Also, I’m no Dr. Mengele, but it appears that his identical twin brother can still play the game…
maybe
i’m trying to think of another RB who left the game for a while and came back… the closest example i can think of is Ricky Williams… he was a bit younger, but not so different.
He was good, although not nearly what he was in his prime… seems like you expect similar. its possible, idk.
+1
For the creepy yet appropriate historical reference.

if Jets get Nnamdi
i’m still not convinced it takes them over the top. you can take Nnamdi and Revis and cancel out a team’s receivers on the outside, but the Jets’ pass rushers still aren’t anything special. great coverage helps a pass rush but behind Revis and Nnamdi they won’t have much as far as other corners and safeties. combined the two have to be commanding almost 1/4 of the total Jets’ salary and there won’t be much room for anyone else
Idk dude
Same defense as last year, and their defense last year was very good with just Revis, who was injured for parts of the year. And as much as I hate the guy, Rex Ryan specializes in passing the rusher. I don’t think the defense outside of the 2 cornerbacks would be that great, but Rex is a good defensive mind (now if only he could shut that big mouth of his).

The passing game is the offense of an NFL team
Running the ball is quickly losing value. Nnamdi and Revis kills every team’s receivers. Yeah they’ll be a threat.
World Series attitude, champagne bottle life, nothing every changes so tonight is like tomorrow night.
they'll definitely be a threat
and a scary one at that. but i’m trying to point out that they won’t have much depth around the team with the large amount of money dedicated to the two corners
How do you know that our receivers aren't better than them?
I haven’t seen anyone shut down our receivers and I don’t think anyone will. Especially if we get Plaxico, it’s over.
Beatty stuff
"I know during the offseason (before the lockout) they let me know that they did draft me for the left tackle position and if I want it I still have to prove myself, it’s not something that’s just given to me," Beatty told Newsday by phone on Thursday night, just hours before reporting to training camp. "I’m just making sure that my head’s on straight. I’ll be doing everything I can to get that left spot. It’s going to be a dream for me just to go out there and line up as the left tackle, but I still have to keep that left tackle spot. It’s not like it’s all over and you can relax now. This is when the fun begins and you really have to buckle down."
