New York Giants Notes: Ahmad Bradshaw, Brandon Jacobs On Center Stage
Good morning, New York Giants fans! Are you ready for another wild day as we rocket toward the beginning of NFL training camps? Let's get started with an early-morning notebook.
It looks like the market has clarified for New York Giants free-agent running back Ahmad Bradshaw. Jay Glazer of FOX Sports broke the news this morning that the New Orleans Saints have traded Reggie Bush to the Miami Dolphins, meaning that unless a mystery team jumps into the hunt for Bradshaw the only remaining question is how much it will cost the Giants to keep him.
With no real leverage, at least in the form of another bidder, best guess is there is no way Bradshaw gets the $21 million guaranteed that DeAngelo Williams got to stay with the Carolina Panthers.
The Giants are working to re-structure the contract of their other big-name running back, Brandon Jacobs. He was set to earn a base salary of $4.65 million this season.
Teams can officially release players at 4:01 p.m. ET today, and there is lots of Twitter speculation that Jacobs could be let go if he and the Giants can't agree on a re-structured deal.
Speaking of players to get released, we know Shaun O'Hara, Rich Seubert, Shawn Andrews and Rocky Bernard will be set free by the Giants. Good friend Pat Traina is speculating that there could be one more player added to the list, though as of Wednesday night she had not confirmed it. I am almost certain I know who it is, but this one is Pat's news so I am not even going to put a name out there. Just watch for someone else to be added to the list at some point today.
The Washington Redskins have traded perennially disgruntled defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth to the New England Patriots. Should be entertaining to watch Bill Belichick try to get something out of Haynesworth.
Speaking of the Redskins, they dealt Donovan McNabb to the Minnesota Vikings in what was a whirlwind day for them.

I REALLY hope they don't overpay for Bradshaw
more than 2.5-3 million / year will be a mistake IMO.
I think it will be time to soon refresh the RB corps anyway.

After Williams got 5/$43
there’s no way Bradshaw’s gonna be that cheap. It’ll be somewhere in between Jake’s 4.65 and Whatever Williams’ annual is.

Which is why we keep Jacobs

You just can’t spend so much money on a injury prone RB; and even worse give him a long deal.

Would rather not pay any RBs that kind of money but if that is what the market sets as a price…..
Renegotiate Jacobs down – he never should have been that high – and try to get AB at substantially less than DW.

Should be interesting though to see what happens with his contact tho. He and ahmad claim to be boys, is he willing to take a pay cut so his boy could keep eating at the same table as him?
On the flip side now that AB’s leverage is gone, what number does the giants offer him? Will they lowball him or still break the bank to keep him in the fold? Only time will tell.

Positive incentives – for no fumbles, 1 fumble, etc. Games played or carries. Yards gained, etc.
Make him work for it (he would anyway but why not make sure we get value for value?
As for BJ, I think he will accept what is reasonable. More a team player. Give him incentives for carries too but that is really in the hand of Gilbride. Scary.

I wouldn’t say its time to refresh the rbs just yet. I do believe the Giants have the edge now with Bradshaw and I also believe they won’t overpay him. As far as Jacobs goes I believe he will agree to a deal. I also expect Osi to be released today I thinking folks are tired of his crying ways. He needs to understand its not all about him its about the team and while I do think hes a great DE I just don’t see them having to deal with his prima Donna attitude. Even Strahan called him out on twitter just like tuck did but it was a nice call out. In which the basically said he needs to report to camp

He kept us in games last year all season with his 11 (right?) FF. As for his crying/whining? I think too much is made of it and he should get a pass for what he recently said in lock-out. kind of an ego-maniac..but 10 FF don’t lie..again i think the way to interpret this having stats only in certain games is that it is more likely that sacks come in games where we have the lead..in blowouts its much harder..the sacks help put a game out of reach..its the offenses part to get that lead to begin with

All those fitness tests, snarky comments etc. This seems to be something of an MO for Shanny nowadays (see McNabb, Donovan, and his last couple of seasons with the Broncos). Seems like instead of pissing off you’re highest paid player and your starting QB you could talk tot hem behind closed doors and try to work with them. Can we PLEASE stop this madness? Let me get this straight, the Giants are going to cut Jacobs because his salary is too high, so they can sign Bradshaw for a higher salary than they were paying Jacobs? What planet are we on? Unless they want to really go into the season with Bradshaw / Ware, then they’ll need to pick up a FA running back to go with him. The best FA RB available will be… wait for it… hey its the guy we just cut! If other teams start to follow the Williams deal precedent, its quite possible that BJ could get a pay INCREASE if the Giants cut him.

JR seems to have his head on straight, but some of this league wide action is pretty crazy.
Bring lawyers, guns and money to get me out of this one! Stand in the Fire.
I'm just glad somebody read it
This is starting to drive me nuts. I get that some people have had it with Jacobs, but this “cutting him because he won’t restructure” is silly. Williams just got a contract TWICE the size of BJs.

pretty sure bulluck is a FA

Backup QBs cost more than other backup positions
Players at the most important position on the team get paid. Bulluck is a UFA.
"Good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun."
we had david carr at 1 mil
i think that is a much betetr deal than sage at 3
by The Blood of Eli on Jul 28, 2011 9:06 AM EDT up reply actions
And Carr got 2 years $6 million to leave
You can sometimes do well at the leftovers pile. But if a good backup is important, you will pay him. Hasselbeck’s going to get paid by Tennessee.
"Good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun."
Don't we still also have, or have rights to, Sorgi too?
And would be cheaper? Guy looks asleep standing up but somehow also looked like he’d be a good enough back-up in the extremely limited reps he got before getting injured last summer.

I was really looking forward to R. Brown. I’d also like to see Frank Gore if he’s available.

Anyone know where to get projected 2011 salaries?
The USA Today page is only listing 2009-2010 salaries.
It’s silly to try to play armchair GM, but I’ve got work that I need to blow off and there isn’t enough new information or player movement yet.

Since everyone seems to want Osi traded, how about Osi for Frank Gore + pick?
wouldn't gore be expensive
plus, when was the last time he played a full season?
by wednesdays_spear on Jul 28, 2011 9:22 AM EDT up reply actions
that.... and he's the center of their offense.
he’s really the ONLY thing they have. They cant trade him.
well we just took
the center of his old offense haha
by The Blood of Eli on Jul 28, 2011 9:26 AM EDT up reply actions
if he were really the center of there offense
then I’d think they’d wanna lock him up, instead of forcing him to hold out
hey, i dont pretend to understand the motives of the 49ers....
all i know is that he touched the ball on something like 60% of thier plays last season. They just resigned Alex Smith, so crabtree/morgan arent gonna do too much. Who else do they really ahve their?
Its pretty much Gore and the TE whose name escaped me right now.
ah yes, thanks
i’d gladly take him in a trade! that wont happen.
Gore is comin' off of hip injury and is always injured and expensive

after Bush going to the phins
AB wont have too many legs to stand on at the negotiating table
I have not yet begun to procrastinate
why is it on the Giants?
and not on AB and Gepetto? I mean Drew R.
you actually think JR, the guy who over pays just about everyone is not making a good enough offer here, or do you think someone just may be a bit too greedy?
that same someone that is turning off teams left and right….in favor of Reggie Bush!?!?!?
c’mon Blood
TeamJPP
you are probably right
im just relaying what these sports writers are reporting… and the report is Bradshaw wont sign until the Giants pay more money… but I think Bradshaw will have no choice but to take what the Giants are offering at this point because the market is shrinking by the minute
by The Blood of Eli on Jul 28, 2011 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions
my fear is that it's going to get to a point...
where JR and the Giants just throw their arms up and say fug it….
kinda like what just happened w/ Miami!
I don’t think that will happen, but this guy Drew does not have his clients best interest at heart…..he’s wants HIS pay day.
TeamJPP
Shocking. I Tell You Shocking!
Drew sucks, blood sucker. That is why the players hire him. A leech that won’t let go.
They have to body slam this guy.
Only problem is, we have to get one of the two RBs to cave. The other will get crumbs.
All the Giants should play like Mark Bavaro.
Tom Quinn Must Go!
On second thought, let's not blame players or coaches, they are not responsible. The unsupportive fans are to blame.

they also are trying to get a deal done with Orton too, only left X amount of dollars
for a RB…Bush only got a two year deal, for far less money than AB will get.

Should have went after Bush
Bradshaw is asking for too much, and he’s honestly not worth it, I mean he acts as if he had the season the kid down in Houston had. He fumbled a lot and struggled down the stretch that had to count against him.
Oh, and the guy has hands of stone when it comes to catching from the backfield. If the giants had acquired Bush, we finally would’ve had a back who could catch not seen since Tiki and someone perfect to spell for Jacobs
but Reggie Bush is not good at football
he’s not worth anything
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
Someone mentioned way upthread that since we have yet to cut Tiki..
we could potentially hold onto him. Jake + Tik at a (much) lower salary than AB? Could be good of Tiks can play at all close to what he was, with say half the reps or less.
(Maybe this ended up being discussed more upthread but I don’t think so?)
by BigBlueDeadHead on Jul 28, 2011 9:41 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Stop with the delusion
Bush is not better than AB.
He had the best(one of the best) offensive minds working for him and he did not excel.
AB does all that is asked and does it well.
Would we like more, sure, but who doesn’t
Jacobs has a strong hand to refuse to renegotiate because...
… if he hits the market his new signing bonus will undoubtedly well surpass his current salary and he will put more money in his pocket this year by leaving than he would by staying. We would have paid a premium letting him go today for his two years on that four year contract.
OK..I'm gonna look at the new one..

I think we are missing something here
the debate for the RB is justifyiable, but we can have the best running back in the world (except Barry Sanders) and if the offensive line does not block it will not matter who is in the back, remember we are going to have new faces in the O line and we don’t know how they will perform yet.
seems like it'll just be one new face and that's David Baas
Diehl will be the LG and Beatty probably the LT. Sure, Baas is completely new but considering he’s playing next to Diehl and Snee who’ve been here forever, I doubt it’ll take him long to get acquainted.
Plus he’s gigantic, so as soon as he snaps the ball he just has to stand there.
