Reese: Jacobs To Be 'Part Of The Football Team'
It looks like Brandon Jacobs will be a member of the New York Giants in 2011. Per ESPN New York, GM Jerry Reese appeared on the Stephen A. Smith Shown on ESPN Radio 1050 in New York Monday and told Smith "We do expect Brandon to be part of the football team this fall."
Well, that settles one question. What I really got a kick out of, though, was Reese talking about how much talking Jacobs does -- and how little it really means.
"I guess you have to consider the source when Brandon starts talking," Reese said while chuckling on The Stephen A. Smith show on ESPN New York 1050. "You can’t read a lot into what Brandon is saying sometimes. We do expect Brandon to be part of the football team this fall. He is under contract. Brandon does talk a lot and like I said, sometimes you got to tune some of that stuff out that he is talking about.
"He’s just talking," Reese said. "Brandon likes to talk, sometimes he talks just to talk. Us here, in the Giants, in our building, we let some of that talk go off our back like a duck and we don’t worry about it too much."

good news
with no one knowing how much time there will be for teams to get ready this offseason bringing a six year veteran running back back into the mix is a good thing he knows the playbook and toward the end of last year was running pretty well i hope we can get 1000 yards out of him maybe one or two more times
Thank You Donnie, Mr. Dolan please don't do the unthinkable

I wonder what this means in regards to restructuring his contract
this is what it sounds like when the birds cry

Good
We need him, he kills defense. If you want to replace him, then find a player just like him. Just like they try to do with Plax… Ramses Barden
The greatest player ever!!!
Alot of thing we can take out of this
- JR compared Brandon to the AFLAC duck.
- Sounds like the team wants him to stay (as do I) but if they ask him to take a pay cut is a different question.
- Players can give their opinions and what they think but in the end, everything comes down to what the GM and team wants.
- Lets recap what BJ has said. First he says he can see him and Bradshaw coming back… then changes that to both of them may not be here. Then says no way Plax is coming back, he will go to the eagles… then changes that to he could come back but also go to the saints or colts. Jacobs is a very opinionated guy and lets his emotions do the talking. Thats a good and bad thing. It shows he is human but the media loves to label him a trouble make because of this.

One thing...
…
- Sounds like the team wants him to stay (as do I) but if they ask him to take a pay cut is a different question.
Jacobs has said that he’s willing to renegotiate his contract and take a pay cut to keep Bradshaw with on the team.
IMO, he’s much more of a team player than he gets credit for.
lets see what happens
when or if they really ask him to do so

I read he already backtracked on that statement
From ProFootball Talk
“Jacobs doubted the team could afford both him and Ahmad Bradshaw, once said he would consider a "fair" pay cut to stay, and then backtracked from that statement later.”
But he could change his mind again I guess

Your right. I dont think he is a trouble maker
Im as REAL as it gets. Even when it comes to my own team!
True
He’s a guy that wears his heart on his sleeve and can get himself in trouble with his public displays of frustration and occasional foot in mouth disease. He realizes that tendency. There were articles early in his career about how his wife was a big help in counseling him on keeping his energy focused on the field. But it’s who he is and I guess as long as he and the team realize it, this is a great fit for him. I think he’ll stay for at least another year in NY.
Go Giants!
Not a trouble maker.
He’s emotional, and I like that. He doesn’t BS and he puts himself out there. The media can be so two-faced in that, if you just hand them canned cliches and don’t really say anything, your ‘difficult’, or aloof. But give honest answers, and your a trouble maker.
I like 27 alot. I especially like him when he gets to the second level and starts steam rollin’ boys out there who look like they would rather have root canal than end up like Laron landry in the 2008 opener. Or Charles Woodson in the 2007 Ice Bowl.
Just get it done already...
because of his reputation
reporters will ask him opinion questions, because he will give them his opinion, not the company line. This leads to us seeing him as a hothead, or a problem in the lockerroom.
I’ve always taken his words with a grain of salt, it’s very easy to see he’s an emotion based guy with short fuse and not much of a filter on his choice of words or actions.
Bottom line to me is… the guy is a unique talent, he is a perfect compliment to any shifty speedy back the Giants pair him with. To get rid of him woud be one of the dumber moves I could see JR doing
Of course that is if there is a season.

Eli Alert!
Bleacher Report, the website that I like to describe as the National Enquirer of NFL related news, put Eli at #2 on it’s list of “most overrated” NFL players.
Just a cheap way to generate web traffic by a website few fans take seriously. But I thought I’d mention it anyway.
Go Giants!
Eli is obviously the most overrated Super Bowl MVP of all time
lol
Die hard Giants fan since wide Right! I was 5...
Ya know,
with all the Eli bashing that goes on, and how low he is on all these lists all over the place, and not being in the top 100 on NFL Network, HOW THE HELL CAN HE BE OVERATED???

kinda hard to be overrated when your not rated at all.

So Jacobs will be back
They signed Ware to a 2-year deal before the lockout so I expect him to be back. They just drafted Scott. Reese said that they took a flier on him so even if he makes the team, he could be inactive on game days. We’ll see whether Bradshaw is back as well.
wasn't there a report or something a month or so back that said...
AB is there “top priority” or something along those lines???
FIX IT
i for one am not totally convinced that they can't carry 4 RBs....
but it’s too early to start discussing the 53 man roster.
FIX IT
its too early
to even assume that the roster will be 53… they could wind up bumping it up to 60 (which I think is a necessity if they insist that we want an 18 game schedule)
The owners
agreed to shelve the 18 game schedule for at least 2 years. So unless the players get REALLY desperate in their attempt to keep about 60% of the pie, we won’t see an 18 game schedule anytime soon. But your right, if there is an 18 game schedule some day, they will have to increase the roster, I’m sure the players wouldn’t agree to anything less.
Just get it done already...
I don't think we could stash a RB with 4.3-4.4 speed on the PS though
The only guy from this rookie class that I think that we could stash on the PS is Williams.
Die hard Giants fan since wide Right! I was 5...
if you'll look below that comment....
I wrote that I think 4 RBs could very well be an option….IMHO
FIX IT
I think it’s a mistake. $4.5 mil is way too much to pay a guy like Jacobs, who’s really a glorified role player at this point in his career. $4.5 mil can buy a starting offensive lineman, or a linebacker, etc.

i agree
hopefully his contact gets re worked
by The Blood of Eli on Jun 7, 2011 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions
not really
plans are next year to slide big boy back into the starting role, of course splitting snaps with AB(if he’s still on the team) and maybe Ware and the rookie. so 4.5 mil for a starting back in the NFL is not breaking the bank, especially for someone who knows your offense, has a repor with the line, and his teammates, and has an excellent career ypc avg., and is a former 1000 yard back with the propensity to score double digit TDs in a season.
Yes, I am a Giants fan. Now that we got that out of the way....

I’ll give you one guess how many 30-year-old RB’s start in the NFL…

it wouldnt apply anyway, he wont be 30 till 2012

Duh, for some reason I read Dre’s comment as Jacobs starting in 2012, which he clearly did not. Oops.

I have to believe he was talking about 2011, but even that is just conjecture….

And JimmyK why in every argument on BBV do you bring up age.
Some guys are the exception to the rule. Some guys can perform well into their mid 30s. Randy Couture was 48 years old when he finished. Yea different sport but incredibly taxing just like football. It is not out of the realm of possibilities for a 30 year old to stay in this league.
Die hard Giants fan since wide Right! I was 5...
Sure, some guys can perform well into their 30’s, but the odds are against it.
http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/ - Eagles

the odds are also against being 6-4, 270 with a skill set of one Brandon Jacobs…

Agreed
And it’s a relevant point. I just did a quick search and Tomlinson and Turner ( and maybe Thonas Jones) are the only two backs older than Jacobs who are likely to get near 1/2 the carries of their team. At his age the risk of Jacobs starting to break down and or lose effectiveness has to be weighed against the salary they are going to pay him.
I think it’s imperative they resign AB. I think his fumbles will decrease with more emphasis on ball control during the carry And they don’t have much choice. Jacobs is probably in his last year with major carries and Ware and Scott are just question marks.
Go Giants!
Thank you. Fred Jackson is another one, by the way. Only Turner could be described as THE running back on his team.

http://bloggingthebeast.com/ - NFC East
Sometimes
I forget they still have a team up in Buffalo.LOL
Yeah, I’d say signing AB and/or signing or trading for a proven RB other than Jacobs has to be a priority for JR. He is well aware of the shelf life of NFL backs.
Go Giants!
True
but Jacobs hasn’t had the carries of most 30-year-old RBs because he was never used as a workhorse. If the Giants properly balance the carries, he should be able to play at a high level for at least two more seasons.
Active RBs with more career rushing attempts:
MJD, Cadillac Williams, Ronnie Brown, Michael Turner, AP, McGahee, Benson, Addai, Chester Taylor, and Gore.
It's been published out there, that something like 500 touches is the death knell for a RB
400 carries is a back breaker too
That is much more of an indicator than straight age
Jacobs has averaged
less than 170 touches per year. He still has alot left ‘in the tank’, as they say.
Just get it done already...
this argument is remind me of Tiki Barber and I dont like it!
